What have you been up to? Hope you're having a great birthday. I love the way you break the ground into old age, er, middle age, er, the prime of life for me! Sending you love,

Actually, what probably happened was I didn't refresh the screen or close the browser since yesterday, so I didn't see the notes from the cheaters who sent their notes a day early.

It looks like I get to be the first! Happy birthday webmaster Mark! Actually, for some reason I could never remember whether Kenny Schwartz' birthday was 9/28 and Mark S. was 9/29, or the other way around. Since I don't see birthday messages from yesterday, I'll assume today is Mark's. In any case, Happy Birthday to both of you wherever you may be.
The Courtney/Stylos kids are doing well. Pam is a wonderful doting mother to Cameron who is almost 6 months old. Jeff is doing well in college. He had to give an oral presentation at school last week so we got to see him in shirt and tie for the first time. Joe and Melissa are enjoying the many benefits and pleasures of homeschooling, which includes many "extracurricular" activities such as kayak trips, music lessons etc.
I am hoping to make a trip to NC next spring/summer. I would like to time it so I could see whatever family will be doing the same. As people start to make their plans, let us know.
But I digress. What I wanted to say was - have a great day Mark!

Forty-two?!? Whew, suddenly I don't feel so old anymore. Take it from me, Mark, 42 is great. Enjoy it though, 43 sucks. :) We sure appreciate all that you do for all of us Mark. We're glad you are in our family. Love to you and all of yours...§

Hey Mark,if I have this time thing figured out correctly, I am the first to officially wish you the happiest of all birthdays. Why, if you were any happier, you'd be twins! I hope you do everything you love to do today, eat your favorite foods, listen to your favorite music, and feel the love we send you across the ocean. Forty-two will be a wonderful year: just wait and see. Love from

Hey, you sourdough!! Thanks for the report. And congratulations to Kenny and Crystal! Definitely, a winter break in Hawaii sounds like just the ticket.
Though we've hadour own paradise here in Washington, now that the sun has finally come out. Steve took Ana and Betsy and Paul to the Western Washington fair on Sunday, and I finally got around to re-seeding the grass. Woo hooo!

Our thrilling news of the week is OUR REFRIDGERATOR ARRIVED! That may not seem deserving of upper case letters to you, but after a month of spoiled food and warm milk, we are elated. Now to get the cold water and ice cube dispenser hooked up. And in other news, I plan on attending Athena's Tag/Art sale this week-end. Jessamyn will meet me and Melinda there, while Mark is on a business trip to San Francisco. I feel sorry for him. That's the up to the minute from here.....
Paula
Wednesday, September 22, 1999 at 17:47:40 (PDT)
Yes, things are well with us. We enjoyed taking Ginny to the cabin with us on the week-end while she was on R & R from helping displaced nursing home residents in South Carolina. She got to meet my friends from Bearwallow, who have become my friends again after, how many? almost 60 years.
We don't have any travel plans before a trip to Columbus, Ohio in December when Betsy Kinnard is getting married. Of course Paul will probably find a reason to visit the Bean State before that, but he's not talking about it yet. Right now he's just trying to get the Red Sox into the world series.
This newspaper is going to get mighty dry if you correspondents don't send in some reports. It doesn't have to be BIG news, you know.

I can just see Paula, blonde hair blowing in the wind, through central Mass on her bright yellow motorcycle. By the way, Paula, we guys are more interested in the make and model than we are the color. Do you wear a black leather jacket and big motorcycle boots? Are you in a motorcycle gang yet? We need more information. Ana is happily settled into second grade. She is participating in a few extracurricular activities, including French lessons. Start looking for messages from Ana in French.
Does anyone have any Christmas plans yet? Keep us posted. Ana and I are getting ready to move to a new apartment in a month. She is counting the days.
We hope all is well with everybody...§

What happened to all of you message leavers? I keep checking...I got my bike today and took it for a ride. It sure is fun. And it sure is yellow. Now to get it legally registered and all. I visited Jess at school yesterday and she is very happy with the way this year is shaping up. Melinda is adjusting, and branching out socially, thus the 8 sixteen year olds who ate us out of house and home last night. But that worked out as our fridge is dead and all foods have to be eaten on a daily basis. The new fridge arrives Wednesday. Mark and Melinda have gone for a driving lesson. We weathered Floyd quite nicely, and got some sorely needed rain. So what is new with you?
Paula
Sunday, September 19, 1999 at 13:41:56 (PDT)
Western North Carolina is so far off the beaten path that even Floyd missed us. All we got was one night of wind, and a lot of bedraggled regugees from the battered coast. But thanks for your concern, all of you who inquired.
Ramona
Thursday, September 16, 1999 at 18:40:23 (PDT)
Hey Mom and Dad,
I hear you are having a visit from Floyd this morning. How is he? How are you? Water? Wind? Do tell.
I am sending dry and calm regards.

It is me again with the bike update. Remember that red motorcycle story of mine? Strike that. The title never materialized so I am now the proud owner of a YELLOW (?) Honda Rebel. I think it was more of a courageous act to buy yellow than to buy a motorcycle. Of course Athena may not agree. It is cool, bright and visible and makes me feel so daring. After I actually bring it home (next Saturday) I'll let you know how it does (and how I do).

I finally got internet access at work, so now I can check the message board and receive emails easier. It's friday afternoon at 3:45 PM; one hour until vacation! My first vacation since starting my new job. And well deserved I might add. Linda and I are going to the cape for a few days next week while the kids visit Jojo in Brewster. We are psyched. It was nice to see Dad the other day, when he brought Pam and Cameron out to stay with us for the week.
Be careful out there all you motorcyclists- it's a jungle out there!

Thanks one and all for the birthday greetings! Mona's right, I'm 37 and holding...Celebrated the big day with Bill Clinton -- he visited Daniel & Perry's elementary school. Had ribs, chicken and cold beers and great company for dinner! Hope this message finds everyone healthy and well.

Oooh, I know! He's 37...right ahead of Athena. Alex and Cathy Hanson will be hitting 40 before Philip ever does! Anyway, hope you had fun and sun and all the good things that make life worth living!
The Pingree kids are getting ready for their first day back to school today...Betsy and Paul have been up for 2 hours, and the bus is still 45 minutes away! Me, I'm hoping for the chance to concentrate on work for a change, but not counting on it.
In other news...summer (weather) has finally arrived in Western Washington - hallelujiah! It ain't over yet!

Since you asked: it is a 1988 Route 66 Yamaha 250. Small, red, zippy and very Easy Rider like. I have no idea what it means to me. In fact, it is still in the shop and I haven't even ridden it yet. I got a black helmet, and have visions of riding it on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Ask me again next week.

Summer is over. Took Jess back to college yesterday, Melinda is off to her first day of school in about 20 minutes. Fall is in the air. We enjoyed Dad's birthday with a boat ride on the Concord River, and a shish kabob supper with Boston Cream Pie. Sunday we sailed in the Harbor. This is the "it is early and I am tired" version of the news. How are you all?
Paula
Tuesday, August 31, 1999 at 03:45:19 (PDT)
Glad you made it, Mom. Sorry about the discomfort, though. And it's great that you can check in like this, and no one has to call to touch base!
Not much to report here...nose to the grindstone, and all that. On the plus side, I really am enjoying work!
Oh yeah! Miranda and Betsy each posted a letter to Jess today: one was mailed from home, one was mailed from work. Jess, be a dear and let me know when they get there, and which gets there first! Thanks.

I'm back in li'l ole Brevard. It was a safe but not uneventful trip: I got just air-sick enough enough to get lots of attention and oxygen and a free ride across the Atlanta airport to make my connection. My friend Jill was waiting for me and I am now walking around here at 117 Wilson Drive and smiling. And sneezing. (Maybe I am alergic to oxygen?) I had a very good visit in Seattle. One highlight was seeing loads of whales, both the black and white and the gray variety during our whale-watching trip to the San Suan Islands. Got to see Ken in Fiddler on the Roof and had lots of good conversation with Pat and fun with Ana. As always, it's good to be home. Love to all.

Happy Birthday, Dad, from the rest of us in Seattle. I know I'm a day late, but....
Ana and I were supposed to go to the aqua park today, too. It's raining here, though, so I don't know. Both Ana and Mom go home tomorrow. Summer, thus, officially seems over....§

Hey Sty-Pings
I wrote letters to y'all a few days after you left, but I just sent them today. Miranda, make sure you write back! How was Oregon? Betsy the band ball is on it's way. I was going to work on it a little for you but I figured that it was something you might want to do on your own. ( I sent a few extra) It was great to have you all here and great to have a birthday party for Paul. Mona you have a beautiful voice. Dave, you are etremely large and also a very decent chef

Hey, Ya'll! Summer seems to be winding down everywhere. The project that I came back early for is finally done. Got it off in the mail on Saturday. Today, Ana and I relaxed by rollerblading around Green Lake (about 3 miles) then eating pizza on the Terrace overlooking the Lake. The weather continues to prove my theory that late August and September are the best time to visit Seattle. I guess Mom will be taking me up on it. She arrives tomorrow morning.
I think I will be taking a day or two off this week and Ana and I will go whale-watching. We had a great time at the reunion, and just wish it could have lasted longer. Ana is complaining that we didn't get to North Carolina this year, so we are thinking about going there for Christmas. Anyone else interested? Until next time....§

Not too much to report here. Still very busy at work. The smmer is flying by though. Funny how that always happens. Melissa is at Theater Camp for the week which she has been looking forward to all summer. Joey just got back from Maine where he had a great time plus made some money lobster fishing with his friend. Glad to here you had a good time Paula. Lind a and I are planning on taking a little vacation in mid Sept. but we don't know where.

Hey, we are back! A wonderful week on the Cape. Weather was perfect until it rained today, I think because the Gods were sad to see us go. We enjoyed the sun, Athena, the food, our new family members (hermit crabs), and getting away. We look forward to seeing you soon, Dad. Hope the rest of you are having a great summer.
Paula

What happened to all you message leavers? We're fine here in Brevard. Betsy and Paul are winding up their 3 weeks with us. I'll fly with them back to Seattle on Monday and return here on the following Monday. Paul will drive to Massachusetts that week, as he does every few weeks. (Maybe he thinks that is a requirement for keeping his New England citizenship active.)
I hope Paula and family and Athena are having good weather at the Cape and that the rest of you will let us know what you're doing, thinking, planning. Love.

Hey Mom, glad your mailbox is fixed. Nothing worse than a broken mailbox. Well, we are all off tomorrow for a week on the Cape. We plan on a sunny, breezy, relaxing week. If you want to call and check on us, our number will be 508 349-3393. Now, to go wash and pack clothes, find sheets and towels to take, find the boogie boards, figure out what to do with the cats, the bonsai plants, the hampster, the mail, the paper, come to think of it I think I waited too late for most of this...again. Ah well, it will all get done. It always does. I will post an email postcard on our return. Love,

Friday, August 13, 1999 at 16:43:25 (PDT)
My mail-box (ramona@stylos.net) seems to be clogged up, due to a couple of very large unsolicited forwardings. I haven't been able to receive any mail for a couple of days. The powers-that-be are promising that it will soon be cleared up, but it seems like it's taking a long time, here in this day of instant-everything. We can still get mail through paul@stylos.net, so if you have the inclination to write to either of us, do it through that address for the time being.
All is well here, but surprisingly hot. Was it this hot last year and I just forgot? Paul and Betsy spend a lot of time in the swimming pool, and I find other ways of keeping cool.
I understand there are meteor showers to be seen for the next few nights after midnight, for those not too close to a big city. Since we didn't get to see the eclipse, lets look for shooting stars. Love to all.

Paula: Congratulations from me, too, I think. I finally figured out what all this is about: You think that if the parents start being bikers, the teen-agers won't think it's cool, and so, won't be tempted. It could work. Is it true that Mark may change his name to Marley David's-son? Why not?

Hey, where did everyone go? Well, we still have Mark, Vanessa and Jerome here, and Athena came back for a repeat performance, but it sure seems quiet. We had a wonderful time with you all. What an amazing family we are.
Okay, I won't keep you in suspense any longer, those of you who are suspended. I took the motorcyle test again and I passed! (I think it really helped that I didn't drop the bike this time.) So watch for me on the road. Love,

Yes, we are back in the mountains, and almost back down to earth after that big celebration on Saturday. Can you believe we really got everybody together? It was great. The party lingers on for us, since we have 2 of our middle-sized grandchildren (Betsy and Paul) with us for the next two and a half weeks. They haven't seen their first white squirrel yet, but they have gotten quite familiar with the swimming pool.
Thanks again, everybody. You who did so much work and also those who just braved the 90plus degree weather to cheer us on to the next however-many. Love to you all.

When all the Family is in one place does that mean there's no reason to post messages anymore? Probably so. Since I am not there yet I'll do my part and keep the messageboard alive. Is it too early to get a weather forecast for next weekend yet? I hope at least it's not one of those hot, humid and hazy days. Is there anything in particular we should bring, besides chairs? Did that luggage turn up yet?
All here is well. The new job seems to be going OK so far, although still a little hectic. I think in the long run it will work out well.
See you Saturday!

Not alot of news from around here. The weather has been beautiful, and the town is excited about the new baseball stadium that is to open next week, but it seems that no one wants to pay for it now. Big surprise. Half a billion here and half a billion there, and soon you are talking about real money, right? We are expecting to travel to Boston on or about the 23rd of July. From there, who knows. I, for one, am very excited about it. Hard to believe that we haven't assembled since 1988. See y'all in a few weeks...§

Back to Acton, as of midnight. Long 18 hour trip, though in good company. This morning Melinda and I went to the registry and each passed our learner's permit tests: Melinda for a car and me for a motorcycle. Stay tuned. Now on to party plans...

Just got off the phone with Mom, and I confirm the thunderstorm rumors! Wow.
Send some of that hot weather out this way, wouldja? Hold the humidity, though.

Dad, Jess and I are on our way to South Carolina for Athema's big move. Could be hot and thunderstormy (can you use that as an adjective?), but we are up (we think) to the challenge. We will post the results....

So I'm looking around for the best deal on airplane tickets for me and the kids this summer. Anyone have any tips? I've been looking at the Expedia.com site, but I'm sure there must be other, maybe better methods I don't know about. Email me with suggestions, if you have any. Thanks.

Small earthquake in Washington tonight. 5.5 on the Richter Scale, they say. I was still at work and everything went to jelly. Yipes! No damage or injury to report - stay safe out there.
