Here is what's up. Want to Add a Message?
Steve and Ana are in Acton here, too, and Ana is doing a good job of being our token "kid" for the time being. We're counting on her to wake us all up early on Christmas morning. We will be trekking out to Worthington tomorrow for a Christmas Eve meal, so the holiday has really just about started. Melinda is out of school until next millennium and Paula and Mark will soon be starting their long week-end.
We just had a call from Seattle and talked to Betsy. It's nice when the grandchildren get old enough to know how (and want to) call their grandparents.
Sorry I missed you here, Mark.
Yesterday we (Paul, Ramona and Steve) attended the funeral of Melia Stylos in Lowell. Melia was more than 105 years old, according to immigration records, and much loved by her family and community, so that made it easier to see it as a "fond farewell". We went to the meal at the Olympia restaurant afterwards and got to visit with all of the Stylos clan (of which there are now many!)
We wish you ALL a good holiday. We'll be heading back to NC about Tuesday, after a day in Fairhaven with the Bill Stylos family. Merry Christmas. R and P

We made it through the longest night of the year - according to our meteorologist also the brightest full moon in the last 10 yesrs. I always feel better once I have that behind me, and the days start getting longer. I hope everyone made it to Boston, and is getting ready to celebrate in style.

Glad to hear Mark made it home safe and sound.
It was a great birthday and a great weekend:
On Saturday got to see Steve and Ana, Mark S.,
Paula and Mark and Jess and Melinda, Bill,
Peter, Anna, and Karen Moser (not all at once).
Joey and I also stopped by the old place on
Centre St. and said hello to Jake and Ruth.
It was great to see everybody!
On Sunday watched Melissa in a Fencing tournament,
and in the evening went to a George Winston
concert at the beautiful Calvin theater in
Northampton. Very nice!
We are looking forward to seeing more family and friends before the holidays are over!

Thanks for the birthday wishes. Although my birthday was three hours shorter than usual (due to the time change) it seemed even longer and more fun packed than ever. Ana and I made it to Boston after delays in Seattle. Had a great birthday dinner with Mark A, Paula, Scott, Mark S., Jessamyn, and Melinda. §

Happy birthday Steve!! Hope you managed to squeeze in some celebrating today. Do let us know you've arrived safely, and all.
And especially sending out Congratulations!! to Betsy and Ryan on their wedding day today! I hope Mom and/or Dad post a report on the festivities at some point.
David has taken Paul and (my) Betsy and a neighbor friend to a Tacoma Sabercats hockey game this evening, and I'm trying to get things whipped in to shape in the house while they're gone...but couldn't miss the opportunity to send out some good wishes.
(And that goes for you too, birthday boy Mark Friedman!) ((Right?))
And to remark on how totally wonderful it was to sink my teeth into some of Mom's fudge......mmmm mmm.

Here is our itinerary for the next 5 days: Thurs., 11:00 leave Brevard, 12:00 appt. with audiologist then on toward Ohio, hoping to arrive in Franklin (Mafra Baker's house) by 10:00 PM. On Friday we'll visit Evelyn in Dayton and Ross in Franklin. Then on Saturday we will head for the Columbus area around noon or before. The wedding is at 4:00 PM. Saturday night we'll be staying at the Sumner Suites in Dublin, OH. There's a breakfast on Sunday morning, after which we'll head in the direction of MA. We'll stop when we (I) get tired and then continue on Monday and get there (Acton) when we get there. We are almost packed and so far I see no snow storms to slow us down. It should be a verry merry Christmas! Ho ho ho...

Get ready for the descent of the Styloses. (Styli?) Ana and I are aiming to arrive in the early morning of December 18. That of course depends on the airline schedules. We're both excited. Any snow there yet? We'll bring our gear anyway. Let me know if there is anything that anyone needs transported West to East. See you in a few days...

Super busy here, as usual! Hopefully the crush will end for me in about 2 weeks and I'll have the chance to catch up on housecleaning, among other things! Meanwhile, just wanted to send out my good wishes to all, let you know I miss you, and maybe we'll get to do a New England Christmas one of these years - our last one was in 1982...in fact, that wasn't us, that was only 2/5 of us (Miranda, Betsy and Paul have never had that pleasure).
Hope you all are healthy and happy and enjoying the season....just 9 more days till the sun begins its return trip! Love to all...

...with an evening topped off by a family trip to our favorite Mongolian BBQ spot, then to the mall to get her Ears Pierced!! Most memorable. She was so brave, and now she's having a great time showing off! What a sweetheart she truly is!
(Me - I got waylaid during my attempt to get home before she did - a train broke down on the tracks, blocking the ferry dock when I got to Edmonds! Nobody could get on the boat, even though we were there in plenty of time, and there was plenty of room on the boat....grrrr...ah well, all's well that end's well, or so they say!)

Yes, it does look like several small get-togethers is the only way it's going to happen this holiday season. My suggestion is to get together (sans parents) around Steve or Scott's birthday, then we two will catch up with everybody one or two or three at a time after we arrive or or around Dec. 20th. Maybe one big whing-ding in a year is enough. For now let's just concentrate on cooking and over-eating for Thanksgiving!

I'm back in Seattle. Everything went fine in Rochester, that Mayo is a pretty impressive place. Efficiency that would make UPS proud. The jury is still out, and I will keep everyone posted as soon as it comes in. Ana and I are scheduled to arrive on the morning of the 18th and depart on the morning of the 26th. However, I just had a court appearance scheduled for me on the 20th, so something is going to have to give. We are both looking forward to coming, and can't wait to see everyone. While I am here, let me wish Jillian an early Happy Birthday. She turns 14 on the 26th. Happy Thanksgiving to Everyone, too!!!§

And now that I think of it, Mom and Dad will be in Ohio then. So our choices get more and more narrow. Mom and Mark will not overlap. Steve and Mark overlap only on the 18th, 19th. We could shoot for then without the parents, or we could do Christmas Eve or the Sunday after Christmas without Mark, or January 2, 2000 without Steve or Mark. Or we could have several parties to include whoever is around. Well? (why does this feel so familiar...)
Paula

I am thinking that since so many of us will be here, we should have a Christmas-New Years get together. I volunteer our house, and am trying to figure out when. If Steve and Ana are here from the 18th through 26, and assuming we don't want to have it on Christmas (though that would be fine with me)what about Sunday December 19?(now whose birthday is that?)We could have a Birthday/ Christmas/ Millenium bash. What do you all think?

Joe and I had a good time seeing Mark, Mark, Dad and Paula (and briefly, Melinda) yesterday. Even if we didn't get a chance to go cruising on the motorbikes. Just a few days left until Thanksgiving. It looks like it will probably be just us Courtneys and Styloses on Buffington Hill Road. No turkey this year, out of respect for Melissa who is almost a vegetarian, and who had a turkey adopted in her name. As for me, I'm thinking of fasting that day. Maybe it will help cleanse my body and soul, and help digest that steak that dad bought yesterday.
Warm wishes out to Steve. We are anxiously awaiting news from your trip to Mayo last week.

No, but I got to see Paul and Betsy compete in the North Kitsap District Science Olympics yesterday - the whole family was in attendance, even! Both did well and had fun, followed by Prime Rib at the Kingston Inn! It was a great day...sunny too! Welcome, Mark!!!
The country feels more like home now that you are back in it. There is a good chance that Ana and I will be in Boston from December 18 - 26. We hope that you will still be around. Ana and I are getting settled in our apartment. We have almost enough furniture, almost enough carpets, and almost enough art. We went roller blading at a rink today, and thanked Vanessa once again for Ana's blades. Ana pointed out that she doesn't need to wear heavy socks with them anymore. Perhaps we should bring them to Boston and send them back for Vanessa. I am five hits shy of being the 10,000th. I have restrained myself from hitting the refresh button. I have an idea. The 10,000th has to do the next edition of the Gazette!!!§

Yesterday Scott, Melissa, Joey, Mark and I visited the Newton Cemetery. We decorated the STYLOS stone for Halloween (with a pumpkin and carefully arranged leaves, by Melissa) and (illegally) planted snowdrops. We paid our respects to Jerry, wandered around, checked out the neighborhood, and enjoyed a beautiful sunny fall day. Thirty long years gone.

To anyone who was aware that Athena was on the road, after a week's visit in NC: She is back home, safe and sound, along with her far-from-new car and all its contents, and the bicycle on top. Since she doesn't have a computer, I'll be the one to relieve the mind of any worriers. Once again we wish that there weren't so many miles between North Carolina and Massachusetts.

Or sometimes maybe laughter and tears. I'm glad we feel more free to talk about him...he is one very important human being. He let me shoot the bee-bee gun one day, then gave me a drag off a cigarette, then rushed me inside to brush my teeth! He was such a great mix of good boy and bad boy - the original Heart of Gold. :)
I must say, I share Paula's gratitude, and look forward to the memories to come! Love backatcha big sister!

While we're on the subject of Jerry, who came into the world 49 years ago today, here's something I wrote to him not some time ago, after looking at one of my favorite photos of him:
In this one you are sitting on the table with your hand in a jar clearly marked PEANUT BUTTER. You are probably two years old, maybe two and a half. You always loved peanut butter. You wanted it with grape jelly or with bananas or on crackers, and you liked it especially off your finger and you'd take a swipe into the jar whenever it was in reach.
I can talk about that now, now that you have been gone more than twenty five years. See? I've even stopped counting the years exactly. Now I can say, Remember how much Jerry used to like to dress up for Hallowe'en, going out for Trick or Treat when he was much too big to? Or, Remember all those Johnson for President buttons he saved, saying they'd be valuable someday? Maybe I have needed this many years to be able to remember the funny things you did with laughter instead of tears. To remember how much you, our first-born son, liked to see the people around you happy. We talk about you now more than we used to. We remember you, Jerry, and we smile.

And on this, Jerry’s 49th birthday, I too think of him. Somehow, he is always smiling in my memory, with his chipped front teeth, his blue striped bellbottoms and his P-coat. This day makes me grateful for my other brothers and sisters, and the memories we share: some wonderful, some hysterical, some terrible, some ordinary, but all are real and all are full of love. So there, trite as it sounds, my love goes by cyberspace us, the parents and brothers and sisters of one forever young and forever loved human being. To Jerry.

Thanks to all of you out there who sent electronic greetings (and other kinds, too.) It was a great day, weather- and other-wise. Athena represented the next generation, and did a good job of that. The three of us went to the Biltmore Estate to see the ever changing gardens. Something is always being celebrated there. This time of year it is Michelmas and there were crafters of various sorts, including some different ones, like people playing mah jong and explaining the game as they go. (Is that a craft?) I decided to stick to RummiKub. There were also children from Charlotte doing Irish dances with enough skill to rival those on Riverdance. We ate at The Stables and came back by Books-a-million so I could continue my search for the perfect journal (since I'm almost ready for a new one.) We got home in time to see the Red Sox make a big win (well, one of us saw it), two of us watched the movie Lean on Me and that was the day. What did I leave out? Oh yes, the phone calls, including messages on the answering machine from Jerome and Vanessa, and news that Steve and Ana may be making a quick trip this way soon. And there were roses (including a lavender one!) and a huge plant from Paul and Athena, some packages to open, so what more could I ask? Thank you, One and All!

Hi Mom! Tried to call you, but it looks like you were out celebrating. So you now know who thise little voices were. I mailed Vanessa's card to you on tuesday, so you may not have gotten it yet. They were talking about you all day. And it looks like Dad should be happy today, too, as the Sox are up by 9 as I write.
I have moved into my winter digs, back at the hotel, and forgot to bring a telephone cable to fit the plug here. Had to cut up a wire and stick it in the outlet just to write this (and check on the score while I am here).
Happy Happy!

Birthday Greetings from us here is Seattle, too. Sometimes the miles between the east and the west, but we are glad that this information superhighway (when was the last time you heard that term) is here to speed things up. Ana and I are still trying to work out a trip to NC next weekend. Could happen. It better, now, in fact, since I mentioned it to Ana. I suggest you take a trip down the Stylos Network archives, and revisit the Birthday greetings that started this website off a few years ago. And my wish for you will be a happy husband, when Pedro beats the Rocket at Fenway this afternoon. We're here to luv ya.....§

Happy birthday from here too Mom! We are thinking about ya! (Make that ya-ya!) I hope you are having as beautiful a day there as we are here. Warm, colorful and dry. So tell us what you did today. And how they treated you (it better be good!) And don't forget to send me the catalog with the mouse repellents: they are eating us out of house and home.

Awww....I ain't worried about the Sox. Refuse to Lose, no, I mean, Dream the Impossible Dream, no -- what IS this year's theme??
My computer at home is finally, finally so out of space that I can't get in to delete enough stuff to get my email or internet connection working, so don't be surprised (or worried) not to hear from me so much. But I'm thinking of you all, never fear!

Steve, I'm sure it feels great to be getting a place of your own. To me the "setting up house" part is the most fun, and I'll bet that you and Ana are enjoying that. Keep us posted. We have no Christmas plans, but are happy to host anyone who wants to head this way. And for those thinking all the way to next summer in NC, the end of June and beginning of July are always good with blueberries in season and swift water for tubing. Mark says he will be joining us this year: we'll see.
I too think of Jerry as fall sets in. Thirty very long tears ago. Now that was a slip, I meant to type years but...

Hey, Y'all! Not too much to report from around here. Ana and I are looking forward to moving on the 19th. We have been out shopping for furniture and furnishings. The new place is nice, but small. Large enough, however, to house anyone from our family for as long as need be. That includes Mona, since we will be so much closer to her work than she is. Be warned, however, that Ana will be getting a kitty. As Holloween approaches, I am always reminded of October birthdays, and that long, wet cold October of 1969. Hard to beleive that 30 years has passed. Leigh made Ana a Poodle skirt for Holloween, and Ana made a similar one for one of her dolls. She told me that she needed horse shoes to go with it. I finally figured out that she meant saddle shoes. Anyway, they both look cute, and we are all hopeful and excited about the future. We hope all is well with everyone, and the hatches are buttoned down for the winter. Ana is taking French lessons, and I have promised to take her back to France once she gets proficient. So, Mark, Vanessa and Jerome, be on the lookout for us. §

Our vacation (it seems so long ago now) was the best Linda and I have had together in 20 years! We had originally been planning to go to the cape, but JoJo (who was supposed to have watched the kids) came to our house to avoid the hurricane, so Linda and I went to a B&B in Bennington, VT for a couple of days. We had a cottage house all to ourselves, and the weather was perfect (hurricane). We pretty much stayed inside, hanging out, using the jacuzzi, read books, etc. By the way Paula, I have started reading one of the books I borrowed from you (House of Spirits) but it is to early to say how I am going to like it.
