Happy Easter to you all. Mark - so glad that summer came and brought you out of hybernation. Hey, does that make you a bear? My favorite part about this Holiday (besides the fact that it revolves around eating chocolate) is that it means we lived through another winter. Hurray! For that I am very thankful.

Summertime! One of my favorite events of the year - springing ahead the clocks. Steve - after months of waking up and trying your calculator, I'm glad it started up again. Mona - when are you going to post the MP3s? Summeresque Easter here.

Glad to hear you made it safely home, Dad. As usual it was wonderful to have you here. Sounds like a great day, Steve, all around. Good luck is a wonderful thing. I wish I could have been in the audience cheering too, Mona. What fun. I have my darling daughters here for Easter. Getting ready to dye eggs and wait for the Easter Bunny. We had a wonderfully warm spring-like day here. How about the rest of you?

It was great to see your smiling face in the audience Steve! Definitely a lot of fun, the whole evening.

Oops, I almost forgot. And I found cheap tickets to France, so the tradition will continue. Ana and I leave for Antibes on April 14, and return on April 22. We're ready for springtime in the south of France....§

My stars must have been aligned yesterday. I woke up, and my 15 year old calculater, which had been through the wash, started working again after having been dead for months. Then I went to my car and the CD which had been stuck in my CD player for months spontaneously ejected itself. Then I stopped by the body shop which had worked on my car a few months ago, and they reglued my fuel door back on, which the dealer told me needed to be replaced. I should have gone to the race track. But instead, I went to see Mona play music at Big Daddy's. She was great, they were great. She hasn't left that clear steady voice. Did you know that she is now a bassist? A good time was had by all and it made me very proud to see her up there. Tim and I are headed to Portland today to see an exhibition baseball game. Our version of spring training. We'll be back tonight for a weekend full of spring cleaning related activities....Hope all is and all are well...§

If it was only the light that came on, I think it is only a service reminder. Were there any other symptoms? In any event, welcome home again!

I made it home by 11:30 pm. I am safe and weary but I am in better shape than the vanagon. I am not sure what went wrong but I think it is all related to the fact that the"grs" bulb came on. the book says that it comes on after 24000 miles and you should take it to a dealer to perform maintenance.Since it happened in Mass. I thought I would wait till I got back. Hope I did not cause any damage. will let you know later.

Greetings to All!
It was nice to read the Stylos Message Board and view all the news! A quick review shows a lot of discussion from the weather this spring to birthdays, and plenty of loving information.
Currently it is raining, I wish it was cold enough for snow.
Presently, I am teaching earthquakes in school. What came to my mind was the discussion last spring of the earthquake that was discussed on the Stylos page. I kick myself for not saving it . That was a great description that I could use in class.
Have a great Easter!

A sunny Sunday morning, and we just had a wonderful breakfast, cooked for us by Dad. Still some snow on the ground, but I hope that will soon be gone. Lots of work is being done on the house, and it is coming along nicely. I am slowly working my way through years of stuff, a much bigger job than I had anticipated. Melinda returns from CA today, and Jess is working full speed on her senior plan project. Mark is spending the day working in his study, poor man. What are the rest of you up to?

We are delighted to hear from you, at the same time we deeply regret the tragedies in your family! Your homepage is a wonderful thing, we especially enjoyed looking at your anniversary photo - you have not changed at all! This is just a spontaneous message, but since there is nothing new at our end we will send you a proper letter in a little while.Love, Dagmar and Volkmar.

Snow, Snow, Snow... Welcome to Spring. I should have known when March came in like such a lamb around here. We had a very nice visit with Jeff. Unfortunately, he didn't get to see any of Seattle's nice views because of the weather. Tim and friends came over for dinner. We had.....spaghetti. Ala son of dad. Ana and I are trying to find somewhere to go in lieu of France for spring break. Any ideas? Glad everyone is fine. And glad that the shuttle isn't coming for me at 3:45 a.m. like it is for Jeff....§

Snow here today, too, and lots of it. For a change, oh miracle of miracles....I made it home in time for the concert tonight!! Unfortunately, it was cancelled due to inclement weather. Can you believe it? So we went out for a celebratory ice cream anyway. That's the spirit, eh? Downside - I missed my chance to see Jeff before he heads out.
mona

So, tell us about the concert(s), Mona. I wanted to report a great spaghetti dinner (thanks, Dad), and a good visit with Jessamyn last night. How many 48 year olds have spent the night in a dorm room with their child? (thanks, Jess, for a good time!). And Melinda is still in CA, and I cannot wait to hear her stories. Snow. That is all I want to say on that subject. Happy first day of spring.

Paul's first concert tomorrow - we're all psyched! He's taken to the trumpet like a fish to water. Also, he got his neck gear today - braces next week! Betsy had a concert tonight, but the traffic bedeviled me and I didn't make it home in time. Bummer.
Miranda has heard from 2 of the 3 schools she's applied to with acceptances. I've been looking over the UWashington website and contemplating finishing my own degree there...stranger things have happened, I guess.
But not much stranger.
Hope you're all well and happy.

Got 4 or 5 inches of snow in Worthington last night. Hopefully it will be gone tomorrow, the start of spring!

At last report (9 this evening) Paul was as far as Harrisburg, PA on his trip to MA, and all was well. He's driving the "love bug" so when he gets sleepy he'll find a place to stop and take a rest. He may make a stop in CT, or maybe he won't.

Yes, thanks, Rona for keeping us informed. I wish the news was better. When we don't hear anything we always hope that maybe no new is good news. If the family thinks there is some progress, I prefer to believe there is, in spite of what the doctors may say. Know that you are not forgotten.
Buddy is getting ready for another trip north. So, any of you up there: don't be surprised if he appears at your door. (He's not good at saying, or knowing, what his exact plans are.)

Let me just say, I am so glad it is finally the weekend. Melinda is in California for spring break, Jessamyn working way too hard on her "Plan" as she is set to graduate in two months, and Mark and I continue the "fix up this old house" routine. We are fixing all those things that we never got around to, so you will have to see how nice things are looking! We will be in NJ for the weekend visiting Mark's mother. Also, for those who may not know, Dad is coming next week! Hurray. Okay, that is my news. What is yours?

And greetings and good wishes from your grandmother. Let us know how you are spending your birthday and whether being nine feels any different from being eight. We, too, are looking forward to your visit this summer.
Steve, in answer to your question, we plan to be in MA June 9-23. Then there is a conference in Williamsburg, KY July 12-14 that I would like attend but I can do that even if it comes in the middle of your visit here. I think if Mona and family come east it will be later in the summer. That's all I see on our calendar.

On a beautiful windy spring day here, I am getting ready to go to Athena's birthday party. I am hoping for pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey and chocolate cake. If not that, I will settle for laughter and good food. If not that, I am turning around and coming home. Then I will have to wait for Athena's BIG 40.

We're just getting home after a rather crazy day - 6 inches of snow last night, and an early morning drive into the Big City for David's knee surgery this morning. All's well now, however. Just a bit of time for some recuperation and we should be ready to rock and roll again.

well as mark is so fond of saying, i'm just a normal person again. I had a spectacular birthday full of happiness even though on the surface all i did was work on the cabinets and eat dinner at home. Yes they are almost done (installation tonight, dad). Oh i did have a fun adventure on my birthday with cj, walking around smith in the freezing cold. Another highlight was scott and jeff showing up with a hand-decorated printout of the web-page (scott knew i wouldn't get around to reading it that day) which was very fun. Thanks for the cyber-love, cyber family! Hope to see the real you soon!

Yup. At the moment it looks like we will be selling and moving in towards the city. Perhaps Cambridge, Somerville, or Arlington. Yes it means a much longer commute for me, and probably a smaller house (or condo), but Mark really wants to go Urban. Life is all about compromise, right?

Welcome home, Mom and Dad. Did you get sunburned? Did Dad get to play any golf? We remain in a state of heightened anxiety about this buying/selling the house thing. No news to tell, just a whole lot of anxiety. I am enjoying the warmest winter in 100 years, I just don't think about global ramifications.

Wow, Jeffrey!!! Looks like you have already been accepted from your second choice, so now it is down to two. I'm impressed. You've done my name proud. I think maybe I'll have to change my name to Jeffrey Steve Stylos now. I hope you are as proud of yourself as we all are of you. Now, if it were me, I'd take the free trips and go visit them all before making any choices. Whoever gets you will be one lucky school.
Meanwhile, Ana and I are back from Chicago. What a nice trip. Even the weather cooperated. More later...§

Hi all!
In case people are interested in which Computer Science graduate programs have replied to my applications so far:
CMU, UMass, Rice, Cornell and UWashington have accepted me (and will all fly me out to visit, except for UMass, which doesn't need to).
CalTech said "maybe," and wants to interview me before deciding, but will fly me out to California to visit.
Schools I haven't back from: MIT, NEU, Brown, UT Austin.

Lee, Naki, I imagine you've heard this before, but not a day goes by that I don't think of these three beloveds, and every day I feel the glow of the love they had, the inspiration from the friendships they left behind, and feel the sting of the loss. Paul went off to Little League try-outs (or more correctly, "Skills Assessment"), but I just got a call to tell me they were postponed due to rain. Unfortunately, they've been rescheduled for next Saturday, when he should be in the mountains snowboarding.
I'm enjoying a moment of peace as the house is empty right now - that won't last long. I'm kind of watching the Olympics, and cleaning house. I hear from Michael Cassilly that he's got a website with International School Hamburg contact info - hope you don't mind Athena, I gave him your email address to include. There definitely was a treehouse to the right of the Sheehan's house, looking at it from our house. It was pretty far back from the road, probably at least as far back as the house. I don't remember the mossy leafy spot.

One of my magical spots was a dark, rocky, mossy, leafy spot under the trees just to the right of the Sheehan's house in West Roxbury. Does anyone else remember it? I can even remember what it smelled like. I remember having a secret picnic there with some one...who was that?

yeah...'Root 30', as I used to call it. Never made it to the top, though. There was one tricky spot I was never able to get past, fell out twice! One day I sketched the view from about 15 feet up. Sadly, it's no longer there...

It's tough to be the one to write a message after Athena. She doesn't write often, but when she does it's a tough act to follow. That place between the Schwartzes and the Ingbars is also one of my most magical memories. Along with the top of the big maple tree right in front of it.

yes it's quite something about the patriots -- i was working and we put up a sign : while you were in the movies ... yes i guess it's been so long that andrea has had to take me place in the conversation sorry about that, andge ... yes montvale memories are quite lifelong i personally have recurring dreams about the leblancs house and the greenburgers sp? now stone condos how lucky we are to have that place to go back to in our dreams i especially also remember the rocks and paths in that little place between the ingbar's and the schwartz's it was a mossy and safe little world (and so big in the imagination) hope everyone is well yes i am having a big party this year, the first celebration of my thirtyninth birthday early march hope every one is really well and enjoying the downhill slide to spring ever increasing light and prayers for peter and his sweet family who keep us posted, as well as our other peter and his sweet little family and his big family left behind

I can't beleive it, a Super Bowl victory for the Patriots! They'll always be the Boston Patriots to me. I just wish I was in Boston to share in the celebration. My best wishes to all those die-hard fans who have perservered for all of these years. I watched the game at home with Tim, who was a Bostonian for most of the season. Other than that, it was a calm and productive weekend. Good thing, too, I'll be travelling for most of the next week and the next two weekends. Two trips to California, a trip to Eugene and a trip to Chicago planned. I hope all is well and the longer days are lenghtening everyone's spirits. §

Well, as one of the true heirs of Jerry Garcia's (musical) legacy, I can report all's well: me and my band were out playing for 6 hours last night, and boy are my fingers killing me!! We've got a gig planned for the end of March, then a wedding in September. Who knows what else will come along!
Now we're closer to spring equinox than we are to winter solstice!!

Yeah, how come you guys won't let any of us get a word in edgewise? Very cold and icy here, and just when I had finally cleared the old ice off the driveway. Drat! Now on to other tasks, like cleaning out the house to make sure I have nothing for anyone to fight over when I am gone. I have enjoyed instant messaging with those wonderful nieces of mine (and you know who you are). Anyone having a superbowl party? Exciting times, these.

I saw a magazine article about Jerry Garcia's heirs, and the bitter disputes over his estate. Made me sad for Jerry, but glad that there will be nothing for people to fight about when I go.

And good for Ana and Tim. Seattle is actually pretty high up on Jeff's list for grad schools too. I don't know about having so many family members defecting to the west though.

Well, good for Pam and Cameron. We had a nice (somewhat) snowy weekend around here. Ana had her first slumber party (four girls total) and Tim and I went computer part shopping and I watched as Tim put a computer together. Tim is settling back into Seattle and into college. It's nice to have him around. I hope everyone else is weathering the winter as well as we are here. Hope to see you all soon....§

Pam has arrived! Staying for the time being in my guest room. The move went pretty smoothly, except we haven't found Cameron yet. We think he is packed in with the blankets and sheets somewhere. No, but seriously, Chris is bringing him out today.
Joey starts driver's ed tonight.
Jeff has one (early) acceptance so far: in TX :(
Melissa comes back from NYC today with her mother.
A family on the move!

A belated reply to Ricky - if he is still looking in - I hope you made those kids walk barefoot to Mason-Rice, and it was in the winter, so they can know how tough we really had it. I'll bite: tell us who the princes and princesses were. Lucky Seattle - getting out of winter. Why, just today I had three layers of clothes here: shirt, sweater, AND jacket. I hope it was due to the early morning (8:00 O'clock). Lunch-time was OK - I could still go out in shirtsleeves. And we haven't been able to go in the sea for almost 3 months...
That's all. Go Pats!

I've been in Oregon for the weekend. I left there in the middle of a snowstorm. Well, the ground was already white, that's a snowstorm for out here. We still haven't seen any here, but from the looks of the football game on Saturday, Boston has. All the more reason for you young adults to look to Seattle for the next stop in your education. It seems like we have settled into the winter doldrums here. At least the days are getting longer. §

Congratulations to Jeff and Miranda for getting their college applications in. And on time. Jeff is looking toward graduate school; Steve hopes it will be in Seattle, Washington. If so, he may well be on the same campus where Miranda expects be a freshman. Good luck to both in finishing up the current phase of their academics, and moving into the next. Good luck to Jessamyn, too, who is now on the home stretch toward a Bachelor's degree at Marlboro, Vermont.

A Melissa sighting! How wonderful!
We, of course, have no snow here. Unless you head up to the mountains. Which Paul has been doing on Saturdays - for Christmas he got snowboarding lessons. He's loving it. Last week he said he earned the title of King of the Faceplant! I think he relinquished that title this week, though.
I sang and played for 5 hours yesterday - with a sore throat. Now I'm paying for it - can't swallow without intense pain. Public performance scheduled for the end of March...keep your calendars open!

Yea! Im number 21000.
Mona, a 4 and a half hour commute? Terrible! You've got to find a job on your side of the big waters.
Good to hear from you, Greg. And I'm still wondering what happened to Sue and Jennifer on December 30. We were expecting to see them at Alex's.
All is well with us, here in North Carolina.

To be fair, Steve, it's an exceptionally dark, gray winter day in Seattle. I just got home after a 4+ hour commute. This is the depth of winter, in these parts. Gotta get better from here, right???
Cool, Greg! Think I will go look it up! Thanks for the quick summary. I'd been wondering...Sounds like a Good Life. :)

Imagine that Greg, being out of high school for 20 years and still being able to party until 4:00 a.m. I'm sure his cousin Athena must be proud! We are settling into the old grindstone around here. It's been dark and gray since we came back. After almost 30 years, I must admit that the gray skies are getting to me. Ana and I are planning to go to France in April (12-22) if we can swing it. Mark, will our room be available? Is that the week that the kids have off of school? Anyone else who wants to come with us, speak now! §

Sounds wonderful, Mona. Can't wait to hear! Jessamyn has added a banjo and Ukelele to her collection, so I say we start our own band (what with Melinda and her mandolin, keyboard and japanese flute. me and my psaltry and Mark his bongos). What do you say? I hope this turns out to be a musical year for us all. (And we too are waiting for a storm, Mom, though Melinda may not be waiting as she is spending the week in Montreal.)

Yes, it's true...I am now a lowly bass player. But let me tell you, it is soooo much fun! I was playing with The Overheads (my band) in December, and they asked me to step up and give the bass a try (that position is always hard to fill), and - voila! I did OK. And it was so easy - already being familiar with the layout of the fretboard and the tuning. And it's so much less busy than playing rhythm guitar. And frees you up to dance around a bit. And you can be so LOUD with very little effort. It seemed to really draw on all these things I'd been learning all around. We play mostly Grateful Dead (and Bob Dylan) cover tunes, and will be having a (recorded) gig sometime in the very near future. I'll keep you posted.
So anyways, David bought me a beautiful, used Fender for Christmas, and I'm borrowing a practice amp, and I'm happy as, well, as a very happy person.

Hello Greg: Since you know more of what is new with us, than we do about you, bring us up to date.
Does everybody know that Mona is now playing bass with her musical group? Can't you just see her dancing around with that giant fiddle? It's a pleasure to see more and more musicians emerging in this family.
We're still waiting for the winter storm that was promised us for the weekend. It's a little overdue, but I'm sure the school kids hope it will show up.
Who's next?

Yes, Paula, we woke up to a couple of inches of white stuff and more coming down. It's about time! Good excuse to stay in and catch up on beginning-of-the-year stuff, like putting away all signs of Christmas, and sorting out the bills. I'm glad to have a working fireplace and a stack of firewood. Schools are called off, as is always the case if the snow begins to stick.

Mark and I had a quiet and wonderful time ALONE here. Ate a candle-lit gourmet meal (prepared by Mark when I was off at work) and watched the Last Temptation of Christ. Some powerful movie. Jessamyn was off in Holyoke playing Irish music with friends, and Melinda went to the First Night in Boston. We await Steve's arrival as he prepares for his westward journey today. Happy New Year!
