Here is what's
up. Want to Add a Message?
Well, we got back to the mountains without mishap, and without ice or snow to slow us down. It is now 10:00 pm and we are preparing for our own private end-of-the-year party, complete with Spanish champagne and chestnuts, roasted in an open fire (in our new chestnut roaster).
We really enjoyed seeing so many of the relatives at Alex's, expecially the two new baby girls, Sophie and Caitlin. Thanks, Alex for opening your house to us all.
Happy New Year, one and all!

That's amazing Paula...15 year old perfume! (heh heh).
I'm having a cold for New Year's. Steve - I was hoping to get back to check on Lucky today, but I'm nursing this bug one of the guys I work with gave me. I saw her on Friday, and I'm sure she'll be fine till you get home. Sorry about that.

What I want to know is: how come I never knew about SconnyLand. Oh wait, I was older than you guys. A full 18 months older than Scott. Is that any reason to exclude me? I did wear perfume to Alex's party last night that was given to me by Kenny on my 16th birthday, so I guess I was there in a way. The suspense is killing me.

I'm afraid my memories of SconnyLand won't add much to the discussion. Can't even remember what it looked like. Was it a big pile of dirt?
It always impresses me though how the same thing can be remembered differently by the people who were there. Memories do drift over time. Having input from multiple people like this is a good way keep it real.
Oh, wait, was it Mark Davidson?
Thanks to Alex and Monique for a great get-together last night. Hope little William is feeling better today.
King Scott
Sunday, December 30, 2001 at 16:00:49 (PST)
Scott is right -- it was SconnyLand. And Mona is close to right -- one of the prince's names began with M. But it wasn't MacGregor the dog (he was the royal hound, I think, "King Scott" might remember.) I will leave that as the major clue.
We walked by Montvale Road a couple of years ago -- I walked to Mason-Rice with my kids to show them what a REAL walk to school meant (we live two blocks from the school they went to at the time). 41 Montvale appeared to be in poor shape -- big strips of paint coming off ceilings on the west side glassed-in areas, etc. 60 Montvale, on the other hand, looked great: neat, tidy, etc. If we could reclaim our youths by reclaiming 60 Montvale -- count me in!
Best wishes for the upcoming year.

It wasn't ScottyLand - it was, as Ricky said, SconnyLand, as in SCOtt and keNNY. Don't remember who the princes or princesses were, it wasn't me. I knew Ricky would manifest himself one of these days. I have his address for those interested.
Steve, you should go visit 60 as a potential buyer. Who knows ... I would sure come and visit.
Looks like all of you are still busy digesting. How was Alex's? The year winds down here, and even here we had some winter weather (I saw ice on the road the otehr morning.), but things are warming up already, and finally the days are once again getting longer.
I am working tomorrow, the 31st, and then taking of until the 7th. That allows for a big New Years Eve Party, since I should have 6 days to get over it!
Hope all is well with all of you, and you send the old out with a bang!

Calling all Styloses. I just drove by 60 Montvale, and saw a For-Sale sign in front. I say we pass the hat and buy it back. Things are going fine with our trip. Jillian made it to Seattle safe and sound (without Ana). We spent the day walking the Freedom Trail and through the Commons and the Public Gardens. See everyone at Alex's. §

A very Merry Christmas from all of us here in Acton, lost under a pile of presents, eating a Buddy-made breakfast, and listening to the sounds of Jessamyn learning to play her new banjo. All is right with the world. Ho Ho Ho.

Happy Christmas to all!
What happened to me, Sue, is that I've had my first actual opportunity to tend to Christmas shopping duties, starting after I got off work on Friday night, and am finally as done as I will be.
And...in answer to your question, I can't remember another bakery in Newton Centre but Lederman's, though I do remember the Newton Center Market, that small grocer on Centre Street, just north of Brighams. I used to shop there sometimes. Do let us know the answer!
I love you all! I would love to be with you.
Today I went to the nursery I used to work at, and bought a Dawn Redwood. My favorite tree. It is a deciduous conifer. It has cones, but unlike most conifers, it loses its needles in the fall, and grows new ones in the spring. It was thought to be extinct when it was discovered in the Chinese Himalayans in the 1940's. And, as Uncle Peter tells it, it was the last tree Pete Hanson planted, on the Saturday before... I will plant it sometime between now and the spring, in memory of a beautiful and beloved family that will live on in my heart for the rest of my days. I hope to be as well liked and as well loved as Sue and Pete and Christine, by the time it's done. May we all find some peace and comfort from our loss.
Hope the day breaks with much happiness for us all. Love,
mona

Merry Christmas, Everyone! Sue, what happened is that many of us are together in Acton and Worthington so there isn't that overriding need to communicate. Keep on keeping on, Peter Watts. Most of us plan to be at Alex's on Saturday. By my count there will be eighteen of the remaining 23 Stylos/Straley/Mohuidin/Helmar/Moser/Hanson cousins. Should be a party for the record books. Here's to a Happy New Year!!! §

This is too funny! Yes, Alex, for some strange reason, the Tommy Meyers song went through my mind last week! Oh, I do hope he doesn't find this site! He was really a pretty good guy...
Laura Meyers wasn't on the scene yet when ScottyLand was around. I do remember one of the Princes was MacGregor! Yup, a dog had higher ranking than us youngest siblings.
Some things never change! heh.
Great to hear from you Eric! Of course you remember Montvale Road fondly - you guys had the best house and the best yard on the street!!
Alex - I would just love to party at your house. I envy you all. But I'll raise a glass in your direction, in your honor when the time comes.

Wow, Eric Ingbar! And you, too, Eric, would be surprised how often you come to our conversations. Yes, everyone is thriving. As you can see, Mona and I live in Seattle. Do you ever get up that way? Let's see, Prince and Princess, would that be Laura Myers and ... er... her little prince brother? And how many kids lived on Montvale Road in the mid sixties? Keep in touch. §

Best holiday wishes of every sort to all my friends in the Stylos family and their extended family too. The message board is impressive! Sounds as though everyone is thriving. Believe it or not, the Montvale Road days are in my thoughts frequently. Hard not to smile when I think about 'em. I'll add to the trivia quiz with this old Montvale question: who were the Prince and Princess of "Sconny land" when they built the house across the street from your house?
Once again, best wishes and any of you better visit if you get within a 100 mile radius of Carson City, Nevada!

Glad you made it safe and sound, anyways.
Still sending out good thoughts and prayers for ((((Peter))). And sending out all my love to you all. I've got a few days off at long last, and hope to spend time with some of those things that mean the most to me - my three lovely children and my one lovely husband.
Happy Christmas to all!

Don't try to find--or create--a pattern with this Dr. Scott business. It just so happened that the delivering (or catching?) doctor was Dr. Stanley Scott. If he had been more helpful or sympathetic, Steve might have gotten named Scott. Or Stanley. At least I remember the experience, which is more than I can say for the birth 14 months before and 18 months after. (Does that mean that Scott would be given the long unpronouncable name of the Lithuanian doctor who caught him? Now who's looking for a pattern?)
Scott, do plan to come through Acton on Sunday, or at least call so we can make plans. Happy Birthday.

Way to go, Scottrick! And who was Dr. Mona? If you miss kids over the holidays, I can lend you a couple, just gotta come and get'em. My holiday plans are to work next week, except for the 25th, then take a break from the 1st to the 7th of January - the perfect moment to practice my €uros. No special plans - still looking for a New Years Eve party.
Mark
Wednesday, December 19, 2001 at 06:24:51 (PST)
Glad you decided to come for the holidays, Mom. Should be a fun time around P and M's. Plus you should plan on making it out to Worthington at some point.
Here's how my holiday plans are shaping up: This Sunday I go to Salem to pick up Pam and bring her back to Worthington. Maybe we can cross paths with some of you then. Christmas Eve I will work in the day and have the kids over at night (and anyone else that can come over). Christmas day to Paulalas (just me, no kids most likely) and back home in the evening. Would like to go to Alex's on the 29th.
Today is a regular workday during the day and hanging out with friends tonight.
I got my camera and computer working so hopefully we can take some pictures over the holidays.
Best wishes to everyone on this Holy day! By the way does this mean I was delivered by Dr. Mark?

Here's to Scott! Happy Birthday from your BIG sister.
Steve is right- it is great to have you on line, and to keep us in line, or at least to line up with us. What are your plans for the day? Hope you too have good friends, family, food and presents. Looking forward to seeing you Christmas Day. Do you have any idea who may be joining you on your trip East? The more the merrier. Have a wonderful birthday. Love,

Happy Brother to Birthday Scott. Well, you know what we meant. Since it is now 2 minutes after midnight on the east coast, we are officially the first birthday greeters. Thanks to all those who left or sent Birthday Greetings. If the next half century continues the way it started, it's bound to be good. I had my office decorated, got plenty of presents, was taken out to lunch and dinner and was blessed to be surrounded by people I love. Dinner with (courtesy of) Mona and Tim, Ana, and Jim Boudreau was the highlight of the day. Thanks to all of those whom I call or consider family. See you soon....§

Congratulations to Steven Jeffrey Stylos, born 50 years ago today. I remember that snowy day in Dayton, Ohio. And I remember the attending doctor, Doctor Scott was his name. Back to the present: I think your mid-century celebration probably started this past weekend, and will continue until the end of the year. Good! We'll be there to have a part in that, as we plan to leave here Thursday morning, getting to Acton on Friday. Have a good day and a good trip east. See you soon!

Pretty impressive, alright. I think Paula is right, it was Anne, not Margaret. And I'm not sure if Patty was younger than Brian. Ana and I are psyched for our trip. We'll be leaving late Thursday, and we'll go to Jillian's basketball game on Friday night in Marblehead. See y'all then. §

Thanks to Steve for bringing us all down memory lane. To continue the fun in person, Alex and Monique are hosting a holiday get-together at their place. You are all invited. The festivities will be held on Saturday, December 29th at 6:00 at their house in E. Freetown. Bring your family trivia questions (and answers) and some others will be supplied by us. We can't wait to see everyone on the 29th! (Call Alex if you need directions).

OK, Ann is in, Margaret is out. Any other corrections anyone?
Bought myself a digital camera yesterday. Not sure if I'll keep it but it's fun to play with. Unfortunately my computer doesn't have a USB port, so I'll have to figure out something there.
Happy birthday to MF, and early happy birthday to SS and SS. There, beat you all.

I wish I was there to enjoy the Euro confusion, Mark (and to see what sounds to be a beautiful seashore sight). Exciting times we live in. Cold here as well. Too cold. For those who want another challenge, who can remember the names of all 13 Carey children? I think I can come up with 9, though I may have invented a few.
Paula
Sunday, December 16, 2001 at 14:55:32 (PST)
I coulda sworn it was Rocky Racoon, but now the banana song comes back to me. As for backeries, the only name I remember is Ledermans, just next to the jewelry store that was next to Straley's. Don't know about the cakes, but the cup-cakes sure were good. Don't remember going to Bailey's either, but the Brigham's in Newton Corner was the original Brigham's. Cabot's has always been (and I believe still is) in Newtonville.
Winter is moving in on us here in the south, as well. Just the other night the temperature got down to freezing, and today the sea was once again eating up the roads the venture too close. Sure looks beautiful with all those white waves, some of them over 10 feet high. The other big news is the Euro countdown: another 2 weeks, and it will be official. They were expecting the transition to be too smooth, so they are allowing 6 weeks of double currency. I think the cash register people must be reponsible for that one: sell them a second register for 6 weeks use. I wonder how the people who still talk in "old francs" (when they simply changed 100 francs to 1 franc, and that was 40 years ago) are going to do with this one.
That's all for now!
Mark
Sunday, December 16, 2001 at 09:52:50 (PST)
Okay, I will tell you his nickname, though not very original. It was Chita. But I beg to differ, Sue, my Mom made the best cakes in Newton Center. I am sure that is the reason we never had those famous birthday bakery bought cakes...Sorry I can't help with the name.

thanks mona for letting me get into the game.that was baileys. they gave you a sunday with ice cream in silver dishes and the chocolate and marshmellow spilled over onto the plate below. anyone for that.
they are closed now. guess they gave away too much chocolate. anywas that quiz brought andrea out on the board.that was fun. what bakery in newton centre had the best cakes ever made. i had one for each birthday. o k come up with the exact name. love you all.

I'm sure I'll never get his nickname though... As I suspected, the moment the answer came to me, I had no doubt that's what it was. Now I can sleep again!
Here's another trivia question. Sue, I wouldn't be surprised if you know the answer to this one. David was telling the kids the other day about an ice cream parlor in downtown Boston he used to sometimes go to with his Mom. It was right off Tremont Street, and it was fancy and served Sundaes in pretty silver dishes. I thought it was Cabot's, but he assures me that, no, it wasn't. I thought maybe Fannie Farmer's, or something. I seem to remember checkerboard floors...Anyone have a clue what I'm thinking of?

I remember that darn monkey that Paula had. We were visiting for xmas one year and were having a grand time. Athena and I were about 6 or 7 and we played with the primate constantly that week. Then one day it got loose and jumped on me. Subsuquently I developed an allergy to the creature and broke out in to a very bad case of hives. To this day on I am still allergic to monkeys. But I still miss that creature( exept for the itching)

Scott, my memory says that you named that cat Sweetie Pie. Mom, what is the real story? As for the monkey, he had a proper name and a nickname, and you could sing his proper name. Can you guess it now? Steve, what a great game you brought to us for this season of LONG nights. Thank you.

Oh yeah! Mousetrap! What a great cat - I remember the day (s)he came home -- ran behind the mobile dishwasher - and caught a mouse!
Yup, give us the hint - the suspense is killing me!

The cat must have been snowball. Funny name for a cat that wasn't even white if I remember right. The monkeys name is on the tip of my tongue too. I should remember because we just talked about it in the last few months. Let's have the hint.
Scott
Thursday, December 13, 2001 at 19:33:07 (PST)
So do you need a hint for my Monkey's name?
Paula
Thursday, December 13, 2001 at 19:23:46 (PST)
No, he named an earlier cat we had- perhaps in West Roxbury (help me out Mom). I remember that we all got to pick a name and then drew straws to see who won and Scott did, and the name he chose was S__________. Anyone? I believe I dragged the afore mentioned cats home, but where did mousetrap come from?
Paula
Thursday, December 13, 2001 at 19:20:41 (PST)
Let's see....there was Frog (Frogetta) and Turquoise -- hmmm Scott loved Turquoise, the stone and the color, so did he name that one?
mona
Thursday, December 13, 2001 at 15:14:16 (PST)
Come on Mark, I KNOW you remember his name. Speaking of cats, who remembers how many cats we had over the years and what their names were (especially the first one we had, Scott should remember, he named her, except I think it was a him....)
Paula

Oh! I see, that was Andrea. Whew, that's a relief. I thought I had been out of the loop in my own family! (and I probably was, about some things, but that's OK...maybe parents are supposed to be.)Someday I'll get the cat story.
Ramona
Thursday, December 13, 2001 at 12:26:31 (PST)
It's Andrea, mom, not Athena. And I know about the cats, but I'm not telling. The monkey had a great name....Argh! Scott, don't you remember?
mona
Thursday, December 13, 2001 at 12:02:23 (PST)
I can tell you what happened; I remember it very clearly. Paula (whose Monkey it was) had gone away for a few days during Easter vacation, and I was caring for (What was its name, Paula?). Anyway, he (or she) took sick about the second day and in spite of a trip to the vet's, died the next day. It was SO hard to have to tell that to Paula when she got back from her trip.
It was a gerbil or a hamster that found its way to where Ginny was sleeping, on a different floor. I have no idea what that business about the cat is ??? Athena, are you making that all up?
Ramona
Thursday, December 13, 2001 at 10:04:40 (PST)
!! Which reminds me of when one of the gerbils escaped into the duct work and reappeared in a room Ginny was sleeping in!! How do those things happen?

Legend has it (in our family anyway) that the monkey crawled through one of the grates in the Motnvale Rd house and never came back. I'm sure my Dad made that up, just like the story about our cat running away (when it turns out that he really took him to the local elementary school and hoped that someone took him home). Please, I can't wait to hear the REAL story.

Boy, Dad, you must be getting to know that highway pretty well by now! Ana was asking me some questions that I couldn't answer, and I was wondering how many others in our family could answer them. So, I thought I would post our first family quiz. Sorry, Paula, you'll have to sit this one out. The questions are: What was Paula's monkey's name? When was he with us? What kind of monkey was he? What ever became of him? Well, the first one to come up with all of the answers gets my undying admiration...§

Glad to hear from you, Jesse. I agree with Mona, it does not sound like a bad deal, there on Nantucket, building houses. The news about your brother Peter does sound encouraging. He remains in all of our thoughts, as do you and your family. Let us hear from you more often.

Hey Jesse!
Great to hear from you, and even better to get continuing good news on Peter. Whenever I think of him, I think of the Grateful Dead lyric Come on home, your Mama's calling you. Corny, maybe, but I feel sure he's going to pull through just fine. Living on Nantucket and working with wood sounds like a great thing to be doing.

hi everyone,
this is Jesse Rona's son i was just checking out the website and i thought id say hi to everyone i know and everyone i dont know in my family.i hope everyone had a good thanksgiving, I like the website and i thought i would give an update on my brother Peter and i want to thank all of you who are praying for him and hoping he gets better.
He was more responsive then last week when i saw him. He does not have TB we found that news out the other day, they will be moving him to a rehabilitation hospital soon, he really needs a hair cut. his girlfriend is doing very well she will be going back to Florida next week to be with family,We hope Peter will be in the rehab before she leaves cause he should be in the same one as her. We have good news on the accident from the girlfriend, Peter was not driving, she remembers the accident very clearly. The accident was done on purpose by the driver which was the kid who passed away, they where fighting on the way down the road to my mothers house when he said "one of you are going to die" then he pressed the gas. well ill try to get back to the family soon but i do not have the internet where i live. iam living over on Nantucket with my girlfriend and her family, building houses with her dad and uncle. I like it, it is very nice it is very hard dealing with this whole thing with my brother but i have faith in him i feel he will pull through this with a lot of help and love from the family.

Andrea: Thanks for getting my book through Amazon.com. It MAY have been the first, but it hasn't been the last. What I want to know is, Who is it that is advertising a used copy for sale?
I sold 10 books at a book fair last weekend, and got to rub elbows with some big name authors.
Tell us more about Sophie and her new accomplishments. Love, your Auntie

It was nice to have Dad over last night, as well as Joe and Lissa. Dad's looking good. This morning he is giving Jeff to Worcester to take his graduate school exam.
Dad tried to translate the message from Panagiota and he thinks her father died on 24 November 2001. Her father, Apostilos, is Dad's first cousin. If it's true, sincere condolences to Panagiota and any other loved ones in the old country. Hope to see you in person when we visit in the spring.
Happy after-birthday(?) to sweet Betsy. I hope 13 is still feeling great. Your smiling face, with rainbow, is still on my refridgerator.
Joey and I had a good visit to the cape last weekend. Doug and Steph have a cozy new house and of course you are all invited to visit. On Sunday we stopped in to watch the patriots game and enjoy a spaghetti dinner with Bill, Ginny and Cathy. On the way home we stopped in briefly to see Peter Watts, who mostly was sleeping, but did open his eyes briefly. I guess at this point it is mainly a matter of watching and waiting and hoping for continued signs of recovery, which is bound to be slow. Sending best wishes, love and strength to Peter, Rona, Wendy and the rest of the family.

Hello to all, Rollie and visited the hospital last night and Rona asked me to post the latest news on Peter. He is breathing 100% on his own now and responding, I believe, to his surroundings. I felt as though he definitely squeezed my hand when I asked him to, and opened his eyes, as well. The main physical problems as of now remain a fever (they suspect pneumonia or an infection around the gastrostomy tube) and the fact that the gastrostomy tube itself is not working properly. Regarding the latter, they plan to try to reposition the tube and if that fails, take him back to the O.R. to lower the tube. An incidental finding from his broncscopic cultures was a positive finding for AFB (tuberculous bacillus)on what they call a "Gram's stain." I guess this does not mean that he has TB and we have to wait until the final culture results return which will be in about another week or two. It is truly day-by-day. The occupational therapist also works with Peter daily and has posted a binder with instructions on what to do (how to speak, position yourself, etc) with brain-injured patients. There are even sheets for visitors to record their observations. So keep praying. I think the important thing right now is to get him "eating" again and get rid of that infection. Much love to all.

Hi everyone, I was really excited to hear about our family website. Rona asked me to send everyone an update on Peter's condition. His pneumonia has cleared and his fever is down. Unfortunately, the gastrostomy tube is not functioning as well as the doctors would like, but we hope this will clear soon. His eyes were open and he was responding to sounds, so that gives us a lot of hope. I hope everyone has a very Happy Thanksgiving! Please continue to say prayers for Peter. Love, Pam

Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone! I'm headed down to Portland for my annual feast. Ana stays home with her Mom (and Tim) this year. It feels very fall-like this year, more than most. I can't help but reflect on all the Thanksgiving Day storms we have had around here. Some years snow, some years rain, some years wind. This year it looks like it will be wind and rain. And fireplaces and turkey. Hope everyone is celebrating, this is my mostest favorite holiday. Happy Consumption! §

Thanks for the more in depth update, Virgie. I hope you'll drop in again, and often. Same with Rona. It's having us all here that enriches this place, and helps me deal with being so far away...
Rainy Monday morning here. And dark, this time of the year. I just missed seeing the meteor shower, as the fog rolled in about a half hour before the time arrived. But Paul got to see them, as he was out camping with his scout troop in the Olympics. Hello to all, I had no idea there was such a website until yesterday when I saw Rona at the hospital. Such sad times for all. Peter definitely responds to being touched and spoken to. Notwithstanding his neurologic condition, his overall physical condition is precarious and day-to-day. He was diagnosed with pneumonia late in the week but when Rollie and I saw him yesterday, his fever was down to 99 and he was on no fever medication. In fact, the only medication he was on was a painkiller and an antibiotic. In addition, they were transfusing him another unit of blood (nurse said his blood count was low but not dangerously so and that the blood was a way of increasing his fluid volume). The tracheostomy tube is in and the machine is breathing for him, but he DOES breathe over it about 50% of the time. He is on the most amazing bed that inflates and deflates, and vibrates. We can only pray and hope for the best. Love to all.

I was able to visit peter yesterday at the Boston Medical center. He was lying in his bed and appeared to be peaceful. I talked with the ICU nurse who said his condition was unchanged and he was still on the life support systems. A litle while later Rona, Wendy, and Annie came in and I had a chance to talk with them. Jess was still working on Nantucket island and Arty was trying to make a go of the reupholstering shop near Plymouth. Rona also said they were taking Peter down to perform a cat scan. I gave Wendy Paula's telephone number and how to get on to stylos.net and she said she would keep us informed of any new changes that may occur. I will be heading back to n.c. either fryday or saturday.Hope everyone is well and things go well.

Another weekend over, I can't believe it. This Saturday brought news of the passing of Ken Kesey, another human being I've admired greatly, and am grieved at his passing. This has been one doozy of a year, I'll tell ya.
David has his own Chair, holding court in the living room! I got a bit of pre-winter gardening in, and am enjoying the fall colors - it's a particularly beautiful one in the Pacific Northwest this year.

At the boston medical canter I met with Rona,Karen anf their daugthers. I did not get to see Peter as they were taking him down to surgery to perform the traycheautomy. I will however see him next Monday. I sat with Rona and Karen for sometime. Unfortunately they did not know too much about who was driving or the particulars of the accident. The did say the car was going along a dangerous curve which it could not negotiate, hit a boulder, that was put along the bank of the road, became airborn and landed in a bog. I gather the girl has not recovered enough to give the details. However Rona seems hopeful while others are standing by hopeing for the best. More later

Happy Birthday Joe! I love you very, very very much. I want to tell you I have 2 cats. One is one and a half months, and the other one is five and a half months. I would like to give you a big present, and I would like you to come to France one time, in my house.
Jerome says:
Happy Birthday, Joe. I would like to give you a big present, and I like you very much. I would like you to come see me in France.
Mark says:
I would like to say the same, but I can't! Happy Birthday Joe, now go eat your spaghetti.

How about some good news from me, for a change? David is at home, recuperating nicely. He's on blood thinners for the next month or so, then we'll see about that knee surgery he was looking forward to.
Betsy recovered after almost 2 weeks off from school. She's playing basketball again this year, and is still playing saxophone - her first concert of the year was last night.
Betsy was a witch too! Paul was a guy named Clive (rides a skateboard and wears a black cape - don't ask me - that's all I know about it). And Miranda dressed up as Barbie, while working her shift at the mall.
And I'm still employed, so things can't be too bad, right?

It's not October 30 here anymore, it is officially Halloween. So, Happy Halloween, everybody! This day still makes me think of Jerry. So, I wandered back through the archives (it's hard to believe that it has been four years) to the tribute Mark put together for him. Some of it seems like yesterday, but some seems like a lifetime ago. I think the Hanson family tragedy brought much of it back to the fore. So once again, Jerry, the beat goes on.
It is a blue harvest moon, tonight, on top of being Halloween. But it looks like Mark, Sophie and the kids will be the only ones in this family to enjoy it, save maybe the North Carolina contingent. Ana is going to be a witch, and I am going to be home passing out candy and trying to avoid getting tricked. Hope the holiday is fun for all....§

A beautiful Fall day in Groton for the Hanson Family Memorial Dedication. The town has constructed a memorial garden made up of a newly planted tree as well as three lilac bushes, a flag pole, a boulder and a plaque. It is set high on a hill under tall pines, and beside a playground where the sound of children's laughter is always present. The ceremony was well attended, and it was good to see so many family members who were able to be there. The love goes on.

What new Prizm, you ask? Well, it's a '95 white Chevy Prizm (They dropped the name Geo, for some reason). It's almost like the red one, but without the sunroof. All the buttons are in the same place. I like that. It has quite a few miles, but we bought a warranty and will hope for another 60,000 miles.
Betsy, I keep hoping to hear that you're well again after being sick TOO long. Let us know. Your grandfather is laid low by a bad cold and sore throat. And right when he needs to be out raking the leaves!

Just taking a few minutes to catch up onthe news on the Stylos web page. It feels like a year since I have had a chance to read! I have adjusted to teaching 8th grde science. My students are more interested in the biology of the other sex than the clouds that I admire. I will change them by the holidays! It is funny I do not remember being that way in middle school! It is nice to drive 5 minutes to work instead of the 30 min. .
Jessica is dancing in the Nutcracker on Dec. 22 & 23 at Bellingham High school. It will be nice to listen to music and watch the show just in time for the holidays.

another rough day for the pingree's here. david is in Virginia Mason hospital downtown, with a bloodclot in his leg. One bad side effect is he won't be able to have his knee surgery for about 4 months, and thus, will be having pain between now and then.
On my way home I was waylaid by a hazmat scare on one of the ferries, and have just now got in the door - just in time to watch the M's game. Good thing I don't care any more....
Is it time for a break yet? Sorry, shouldn't complain, I'm sure.

Just in case anyone is reading this now, and is in the north part of the country: due to solar flare activity, tonight is an excellent night for viewing Aurora Borealis (the Northern Lights)...just step outside and look up, to the north, and if it's clear you're likely to see them tonight - yes, in Massachusetts and maybe even as far south as northern Maryland!

It is easy for me to believe that Jerry is this family's guradian angel.
We have decided to take our new (well, fairly new) Prizm and go to Ohio tomorrow, returning on Wednesday, late. Uncle Ross, my father's brother, who is 94, is seriously ill (after being amazingly healthy until quite recently). He is not expected to live much longer, so it seems like a good time to go there. We will stay with Mafra, as usual, and visit with Aunt Evelyn in Dayton.Mafra's number is 513-746-6031.
I am feeling almost normal, gracias a dios.

Happy 51st birthday to big brother Jerry, who really is "forever young". It is remarkable, the impact you continue to have on all of us. You helped shape so many of our lives. It still feels as if you are here with us, laughing, loving, crying, comforting, and trying to make sense of it all. With all that said though, I have to say it is the laughing that I remember and miss the most. You are forever in my heart.

Update: I took Betsy in to the Dr this morning. She tested negative for Strep (good thing), and the Doctor thinks that she's just battling the bug that's been going around. So we'll keep her under watch for the next 48 hours or so, keeping her dosed with Tylenol and Robitussen.
The best thing about kids when they are really sick ~ they don't complain much. The worst thing ~ the worry. She'll be fine. I'll keep you posted.
Paul feels 100% better - and the Dr thinks he probabl had the same bug, it's just manifesting itself differently.

Your little Paula

Happy Birthday, Mom! I know it's not your Birthday where I am, but it is your birthday where you are, and where you were born. So, I guess this is legit. This is bound to be a great year for you. I feel it. Thanks for having us, Mom, without you, none of this would be possible. §

I heard about Athena's photo; I'm waiting to see it. Yess, Jess, that is a beautiful tribute to your cousins, and that was a beautiful message you put on the board. Do keep checking in from time to time.
We're doing OK here. My bruises are changing colors and my ribs are not so sore. We're going to the cabin tomorrow to drain the water and close it up for the winter.

And by the way, did anyone else see Athena's photo in the Boston Globe Magazine Ocotber 7th?

I think so too, Jessamyn. A wonderful tribute, alive and weeping. I am sure Lee, Naki and Kathy will all appreciate the thought of a tree in Vermont, on a mountain top, in memory of Peter, Sue and Christine.

Up at Marlboro, we are planting a weeping willow tree in loving memory of Peter, Sue, and Christine. I would like to dedicate it as well to Naki, Lee Karen and all of us who loved them because it is a living memory. a celebration of life just like the memorial service. It is planted in love compassion, and appreciation; but what grows has a life of its own and is a thing of beauty and joy, that will flourish and provide comfort as a living memory of their and our love.

Here is some good news...Sophie is now crawling. She's all over the place and is also starting to stand on her own. She is so much fun. We mostly keep the TV off and enjoy every minute with her. Kids really are the bright spot that make you put all this crazy stuff in perspective.

I have some good news. I went to the baseball game nd my team won. Not only that, the weather held up. Things are pretty slow when the biggest and best news is a baseball game.
I'm still making plans to come east for Christmas. I'll keep y'all posted. Athena, I hear that you are going south to pick up the Volvo. I think that's great. Now you won't have an excuse to not come see me in Boston this Christmas. I think I will fly home with Ana right after the holiday, and then back to Boston with Jan and her kids, Leah and Noah. That is, unless someone wants to escort Ana back to Seattle. Maybe I'll ask Jillian. She hasn't been her for awhile.

Well, things are moving along. Paul has his new teeth and they look great. He is bravely trying to get used to the way they feel. I am getting over my injuries from Monday's accident. I still have ringing in one ear, where the airbag hit it. I'll have it checked out by an ear doctor tomorrow.
Doesn't anybody have any good news to counter all the bad stuff on TV?

Mom, there are so many better ways of getting into the news. Like sailing to Cannes and St. Tropez. But add my relief and get well wishes to the others. I am glad no broken bones were involved. Sorry about the car. Now what? Keep us updated on your recovery. Rest up, and read a good book. If you are looking for a fun book read Crazy Ladies, by Michael West.

I can gladly announce that I have no news to report! I plan to go sailing this weekend to Cannes and St. Tropez ... wish you were here, don't you?

Sounds terrible, Mom. But at least you are okay. You'll probably be sore for a few days. What are you going to do about a car to drive? Is the bus an automatic? Know that you are in our thoughts....§

Finally some news worth writing about: not good, though. Yesterday, while driving an elderly friend to the nursing home to visit her husband, my car was broadsided by a Dodge, whose driver was fiddling with the radio and failed to see the red light. My passenger and I got a ride to the hospital in an ambulance where our various boo-boos were attended to. My injuries seem to be from the airbag and the seat belt (which probably also saved my life). Jean, who's 85, got a skinned up arm and various bruises. My little red car didn't fare so well. The driver side doors were both pushed in about a foot and a half and it probably has traveled its last mile (behind a tow-truck).
This morning I feel like I've been kicked by a team of mules and there's still a loud ringing in one ear, but I'm trying just to be grateful I'm not worse off. I'm getting good care and sympathy and all will eventually be well. And I still feel safer in an airplane than in a car!

Looking forward to seeing you Steve and Ana at Christmas. I'll be around, although I will probably be on call and need to stay close to home, at least for part of the time.
Quiet ,cool, colorful Columbus day weekend here in Western MA. I'm thinking I'll go to Athena's tag sale today, and go hiking tomorrow.

Hi All, I'm in Oregon for the weekend. I was just planning my trip to Boston for Christmas. Who is going to be where when? Things are going well in Seattle, I am enjoying having Ana with me. She sees lots of her Mom too. Before and after school everyday, in addition to the regular visits. Ana is enjoying fourth grade and looking forward to seeing everyone back in Boston in December. More later...§

Dental work is proceding apace. The most painful part is paying the bill.
Clarification: Bearwallow Road, new edition, will not be actually readable on-line; but it can be ORDERED through Amazon.com. And that isn't operative yet, taking a week or two to get set up. Right now, only I, and the local bookstore are distributing it. That will expand if I ever get around to doing some marketing trips to KY and Ohio.

Doing OK here too. Paul is recovering from his oral surgery and I am due to start mine tomorrow morning. Mine is not as radical as his, but will probably be more expensive. At least I am getting it done locally, so no long trips to Greenville, SC.
Weather is perfect. We have new winter pansies in the "angel garden", Paula, Mona and Athena.
Soon Bearwallow Road will be available on Amazon.com.
We have not closed up the cabin: Our friends from Brodhead, KY will be there this weekend.
So that's where we are. Who's next?
