Is it that time of the year again, Melinda? How quickly it flies, doesn't it? What kind of real job do you have? Lot's happening in your life, isn't there? Graduations, Colleges, Jobs, European vacations, Proms. Hopefully the rest of your life won't seem dull after the whirlwind of activity the past few months. Have a great Birthday and year....Hopefully we'll see you soon.....§

Happy Birthday to Melinda, who is probably too occupied with her real (read: paying) job to check in on the family web page. I hope you enjoy your special day and this year of being 18, which is also pretty special. Check your email to see what your present will be. Yaya

count me in on the visits to seattle... last week in august, amy and i are hoping to come your way. Are the gardens still nice that time of year? ... i may have some formal cabinetmaking training, but i often wish i had mark around to ask some framing / foundation questions. Still, even though this is just a knock-together pressboard shed we're making it's giving me lots of ideas of building / designing on my own. Put a hammer in my hand and i'm as happy as a .... hammer head? hammer hand? (hi bud wherever you are) well the sun is shining, time to swing some more hammers!

I'm finally settling into my house. This weekend I should get the last of the boxes unpacked. Welcome to the States, Paula, Jess and Melinda! And welcome to North Carolina, Athenaki-moo. I wish I had a video of the Father-Daughter shed project. Imagine, Athena, you are the only one in the family with formal carpentry training. To say nothing about the architectural training. We're looking forward to having you in Seattle sometime soon. I'm not sure what my exact plans are this summer. I am thinking about staying put this summer and working on my house, etc. It would be odd to have time off of work and not travel. I have NEVER done that before. Maybe this would be a good summer for people to come to Seattle to see the Pingrees and us. More later...§

What happened? I just wrote a message and it came out with Paula's name signed to it. OOps, I guess I did that, myself, putting Paula instead of Ramona in the YOUR NAME box. Sorry Paula. I'm sure that's a federal offense or something, signing somebody else's name!

And I will save YOU, Paula. I am staying cool inside while Paul and Athena are putting up a much needed garden shed out back. Boy! Put a hammer in Athena's hand and she's happy as a ... well, finish it any way you like.
No more news to report, so, who's next?

Paula
Thursday, June 28, 2001 at 15:57:10 (PDT)
Here you go Athena. I will save you. Don't you hate that top dog position? Not much to report except going back to work was no fun. The weather is hot and muggy (beware, Mark). Our next excitement is Melinda's big 18 on friday. Then Mark's visit. I am still working on my NC plans...I apologize to all who want to know....I will let you know when I do. The mountains sure sound like the place to be right about now...

okay so now i know what it's like to get stuck at the top ... is there a word for that? getting everested? rotten egged (as in last one in?) not too much to report from nc, weather is beautiful, a little warm, we are in the process of selecting a shed for dad's new tractor mower, we'll probably get an assemble it yourself kit and still have time for other projects. hope everyone is well in stylos-land.

well in keeping with our cyberfamily tradition (family cyber tradition?) i am reporting my safe arrival in brevard. birds are singing, we had spaghetti and it's broad daylight at eight fifteen. also in keeping with my own pesonal tradition i twisted my ankle, right before coming this time, about two in the morning actually. but it's not so bad this time (and it's the other one) so it just means a few days of reasting before we embark on

I'm having connectivity troubles at home, too, so I'm just reading at work, till I get this cleared up.

Our news: Paul's team won the championship!! They had to play 6 straight games at the end, with the final game played in the pouring rain!! But they smoked the other team, 10 to 0! He looked great out there, btw.

Back home again. A beautiful week in Antibes with sun and the Azur Sea. Mark, as usual, was an excellent host. Good to see Jerome, Vanessa and Sophie as well. The train ride to Paris was exciting if smokey, and Paris was fabulous. More sun, the Eiffel Tower (to the top), Notre Dame (clmbing among the Gargoyles), the Louvre, the Champs Elysse, Les Halles, the Pompidou Center, the flea market where Melinda and Jess both got leather coats, the Latin Quarter, the metro, the night life.....and buying a french outfitted as Dad instructed. More details as jet lag wears off.

I had a wonderful wonderful birthday, and want to thank all of you for the warm wishes! Spent the evening with friends I love, eating outrageously delicious food, listening to live music. Even got a request in and a birthday salute from the stage.

Happy Father's Day to my father, and to all the other father's out there in Stylosville. And even to those who just like to be called 'daddy'. I'm going to start the day off right, with a trip to the hardware store. Is that a Dad thing to do or what? Then out to lunch and for a long walk, and maybe a roller blade, on the beach in Alki, followed by lunch at the Liberty Deli. Then I am going to settle into our new house with my family (Ana). Hope everyone has as nice of a day as I plan to. §

Well, I'm finally making a posting from my new house. The house is nice, it was left in good shape, but there is still lots of time and energy before it will be a home. It was a great 25th reunion, too. It's funny how we change, but we stay the same. I think Scott, Paula and Mark should post their NC/Boston plans for the summer so I can make a decision about where to go. Hope all is well...§

I remember that day very well. It has been quite an interesting 25 years, and I have no regrets. It was a good party, wasn't it? Melinda's graduation was a also a good party. We did have a little excitement, though, with a young boy (who shall remain nameless) who flew from the treehouse. One doctor and two nurses (one of whom was also the grandmother) tended to him and he then had an ambulance ride to Emerson Hospital. I am happy to report that he was soon sent home with only a bump on the head and a scrape on his back. But back to Melinda: she is graduated, appreciated, celebrated, and very happy. We leave for France this friday. HURRAY!
Paula

I remember that day, too, especially the belly-dancing and the shish kebabs.

I am back home in Brevard after a very pleasant trip across the country. Athena, I got your message (but why do I think you'll get this one?)

Happy anniversary, Paula and Mark. Don't let this significant milestone get lost among all the other significant things that are happening. Love to all.

I remember a big party at Montvale Road twenty-five years ago today. It was the start of something big. A welcome-to-the-family party to Mark Allan. And a celebration of the wedding of Paula and Mark. Congratulations again! And thanks Mark, for being the son that my dad never had. Enjoy the full moon, and the trip to France.

Mom is headed east, a day early. My move into my house has been postponed until next Tuesday, after I return from my twenty-fifth college reunion. It was great having her here, and we look forward to seeing everyone somewhere this summer. Looks like our trip east will be between July 16 and August 6. §

Update from Worthington: Have had a good weekend so far despite less than ideal weather. Joe and I went to visit Pam - Joe babysat for Cameron while Pam and Chris and I went to the Sting concert at the Fleet center (Good show - last one of the American tour). Stopped briefly at Paula's on the way home, but only found a comatose Melinda at home - must have been a fun time at the prom! Now we are hanging out at home waiting to see if the weather is good enough for the picnic I'm supposed to go to.

Lot's of moving happening this coming week, including Jeff and Sara moving into a new place in Amherst.

Wish I could have seen Melinda on her way to the prom. I'm sure a photographer was around. Jess, I hope your strep throat is gone, or at least going. Steve my flight number is 197, Delta, arr. 10:01 Wed. from Atlanta. Mona, maybe I'll get to see that WhizKid Paul in action.

Enjoy your day off, those of you who are getting one.

Update from Acton: Jessamyn spent her 21st birthday going to the doctor (yes she has strep throat), then returning to the doctor in great pain to get painkillers as well as a mono test (no she does not have mono), and trying to stay awake for the festivities. She appreciated your good wishes all the same. She is off to the Cape today to stay with a friend. Melinda just left for the senior prom, all dolled up. She was stunningly beautiful, though I may be prejudiced. Now we are getting ready for the graduation. Then my birthday. Then our 25tth anniversary. Then off to France. My head is spinning already. Betsy went to Victoria, BC last weekend to march in the Victoria Day Parade (her school won the Jr Division in the marching band contest). Miranda is my biggest sweetheart. So what else is new? Work goes on, paychecks keep coming. Life is good. Looking forward to seeing Mom next week.

Crazy days in the Senate, eh?

Squeezing one more birthday greeting in under the wire for the newest official grown-up in the family. I hope your mother told you all the secrets that we are sworn not to tell to children.

See you soon Jess! Hope you have (had) a good day. Proud to be your uncle!

21 years. Wow...(((((Jessamyn)))))) <==========sending you so much love.

That day was 2 weeks before I took the bus/bus/train out to the west. A lifetime ago.

Is it as sunny and beautiful there as it is here?

Who'd a thunk, Jess!?! Twenty-one! Good for you. Having a big party? We wish that we could come. And we wish we could go to France with you. We're proud of the young woman you've become, and can't wait to see you this summer, somewhere along the way...§

Today is the twenty first anniversary of the day I became a mother. Coincidentally it is also Jessamyn's coming of age birthday. How lovely that we can celebrate together. Let me be the first to say - What an amazing 21 years it has been. You have made life exciting and miraculous for all of us. As you reach this brink of adulthood remember that you will always be my baby. Thank you for the honor. I love you very much.

Let's hear it for Jessamyn, who is 21 today! Hopefully she is back home from a successful junior year at Marlboro, along with her cat Otis.

Have a good birthday, Jess. I hope you enjoy your new status as one of us grown-ups, with all that implies and entails. Much love. YaYa

Woooo hoooo for Melinda!

Betsy is on her way to Victoria, BC today -- she'll be marching in the Victoria Day Parade tomorrow (no doubt you'll be able to catch it on your local news....not). Anyway, she was in 2 parades yesterday - Armed Forces Day in Bremerton, and Vikingfest in Poulsbo, where we actually had the chance to watch her. And hear her. The band sounds really great! And of course, she looked marvelous.

The weather is so beautiful here today, we're somehow able to be happy, even despite the Mariner's tough day yesterday...Love you all!

Wow! That's great, Melinda. And finished in style, I am sure. I wish I could make it back to Acton for the ceremony, but presumably, I will be moving that weekend. We are all very proud of you, and not just for your academic success. When is Bon Voyage? You'll have a great time in France, I am sure. Just don't forget to come back. I'm sure that we will run into you sometime this summer.....§

Yes, it will be nice to meet another little cousin! It is great that you are all sleeping through the night! Enjoy the moments, they go by to quickly!

Okay, Mona how do I make that sideways smily face on my keyboard!

A little trivia, did you know children's day is June 11th, yes this is true fact. What a great day to celebrate!

Ok Sue, you win. Here's a message from me! We are enjoying every minute with Sophie. She just started sleeping through the night. That was the best Mother's Day present of all (especially since I'm back to work). She is growing like crazy. I can't believe she is almost 4 months old. I will scan some photos and send to Mark so he can post them here. She is definately more Redmond than she is Stylos (fair skin and light hair....oh I guess there are some Stylos' with fair skin and light hair :) We will be in Fairhaven from August 18th - 25th and would love to see everyone!

Hey! Spaghetti synchronicity here. By my own request, I might add.

We're just getting back from another win by Paul's little league team. He went 2 for 3, with a run scoring sacrifice fly. He looks great up there. And someone on the team brought impatiens for the kids to hand out to all their moms. It was great.

Thank you, thank you, to all who sent Mother's Day Greetings. It was, indeed a good day. Somehow I feel a bit like an imposter, getting all that attention and applause for just doing what comes "natcherly".

Besides getting phone calls and reading emessages, today we walked in the forest, then drank sombreros and had spaghetti, made by guess who. It's nice being Queen for a Day.

My favorite Mother's Day memory: fixing and serving breakfast in bed for Mom. Never getting the coffee quite hot enough! Crowding onto the bed with so many presents and so many other children. Love you so much ((((Mom)))).

And echoing sue's thoughts...thinking of you ((((Kim)))). I understand you're quite the wonderful mom in you own right. Hope to get the chance to visit with you this summer, if our plans work out right!

Happy day to all mothers and all children of mothers out there...now who did I leave out?!

Thanks from No. 2 as well. It didn't seem so monumental when we were kids, but now that we are raising kids of our own, it's a whole new perspective. We're hoping that Seattle will be next on your travelling itinerary. Hope you are enjoying the spring weather and peacefulness before the annual summer migration of descendants begins...§

Made it home safe and sound. Enjoyed Seattle alot, and got to do everything I wanted to do, especially hanging out with the kinfolk that I don't get to see too often. Especially glad Betsy came on the hike with us yesterday: it was fun. Paul was busy being a hero in his baseball game (with 2 outs in the last inning, but that's another story). Love to all.

News, you ask? You know what they say about No News...Paul is watching the Red Sox on TV. My friend Lynne (whom I met in Spain, but who lives now in Texas) arrives tomorrow to stay until Friday. That will be fun. She's good company. The water still isn't flowing into the cabin, but hopefully next week-end. The refrig. there is on the blink, as is the shower. We hope to have it all in working order by the time summer visitors arrive. If not, then we will "rough it" even more than usual. The mountain laurel is ready to bloom out in the forest. The weather is perfect. Life is good.

Well, I woke up this morning to a quiet house. Except for the sound of Lucky walking around meowing as if to say, 'What happened?'. What happened was that Scott left and is headed east. We had a wonderful visit, and are already working on making it less than 28 years before he comes back this time. Other than that, all if fine here. I have had on offer accepted on a house, and I am told my financing has been approved, so I should be moving in less than a month. I'll email the details to all when it is a certainty. §

Still havin a good time out here in Seattle. Finished my conference today. Steve and Ana were a little sick this week but are mostly better now. I can cheer for the Seattle Mariners now that they are not playing against the Red Sox. Plan to go out and see Mona, Dave and kids once more tomorrow, and go for a hike if weather permits.

I'll try to get some new pictures of my kids to put up on the net. It's hard to keep up when they grow up so fast.

Actually, I've seen some weird sky phenomena around here that I'd heard referred to as sun dogs, but I was pretty sure they didn't have it quite right. So I'm glad for the true story.

What I see is little snippets of rainbows, like a serving size slice, up high in the sky.

mona
Monday, April 30, 2001 at 19:31:02 (PDT)
Kim, thanks for that bit of scientific trivia. Iwill be on the lookout for per-he-lions and per-she-lions, also.
Ramona
Monday, April 30, 2001 at 17:36:48 (PDT)
Well a perfect sun dog rainbow is when there are two vertical lines, one on each side of the sun early in the morning or late in the afternoon, in the spring and fall, in New England and Hawaii or on the same latitude globally. The rainbow is missing the top of the arc we are accustomed to. The sunlight reflex of f of the ice crystals in the high level clouds. It is unusually unique. (Sometimes called a perhelion too)
Happy May Day!

13 and 40. Both pretty significant milestones. Best wishes to Ana's cousin Melissa, and my cousin Alexander.

We had a nice visit with Scott and the Pingrees today. Ana was enjoying herself so much she stayed in Kingston while I headed home to do the taxes. That's right, taxes. Western Washington got a two week extension because of the earthquake. I'm getting very close to putting an offer on a house. It's great to have Great Scott here, hope he never leaves....More later....§

Thanks again for the update Sue. Sounds like things are under control.

Yes Mona, I'm not getting the photos on the main page either, just the caption ("here we are").

Summer finally arrived in Worthington, all at once. A beautiful warm breezy sunny day. And no bugs yet. Wonderful time of year.

Three more days of work, then on Thursday I fly to Seattle (arrive 5:13 PM on Continental). Yay! Haven't been there for about 25 years. I get to hang out and visit Thurs-Sun, then a conference Mon-Fri and leave on Sun (6th). Looking forward to seeing all the Seattlites, going to a baseball game, and also would like to see a rain forest if that works out. See you soon.

By the way does anybody know a website where you can enter a phone number and find out who it belongs to? If so send me the link.

Thank you Sue for keeping us posted on Dick's condition. I certainly have confidence in the doctors at the Brigham to do what needs to be done to get him taken care of. We are all thinking of you both and wishing you well.

To Athena and Amy:

Thank you for the hospitality and good movie, except the end which was kind of gratuitous. The fouton was exceedingly comfortable. I was awoken by the banshee-like shrills of your cat. The honey nut cheerios were an excellent way to start the day. On our way back, we missed route 2 and ended up on route 20 then 290 then 495 then route 2 then 111 then finally home. Let's just say we momentarily lost any sense of direction...

Bummer, Dick! We hope you are well soon and that they get to the bottom of whatever it was. We are back in Seattle, a little late due to mechanical difficulties in Amsterdam, but home safe, sound and tired, nonetheless. Thanks to all of those on the other side of the pond that made it all possible.

Hey there! We are sitting around listening to the baseball game. It's evening here. Today was the first time that we have had less than perfect weather, but we won't rub it in. We went for a nice walk, scoot on the boardwark in Cannes today. Our flight is very early. We still manage to get to Seattle in the early afternoon, even after six hours in Amsterdam. It's been a nice trip, the nicest so far. Nice weather, extra days and the company of Dad. By the way, the Marathon is Monday, and Easter is Sunday, so technically the Marathon is after Easter. Since Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox, and the Maraton is on whatever day Patriot's day is celebrated, it's possible for the Marathon to come first. But not this year. Hope all is well, and we'll be a-posting....§

Is it really Marathon Day? Isn't that unusual for it to come before Easter? But then this has been an unusual year so far.

An early morning phone call from France reports that things are well there. They must be too busy to give us frequent reports. Buddy will be chief baby-sitter for Vanessa and Jerome next week while they're on school break. They will probably play lots of "One for you, one for me..." Steve and Ana head back for Seattle tomorrow. I've been enjoying the 80-degree weather, but I'll try not to rub it in. Going to the cabin this afternoon. Happy Easter to all within the sound of my...computer.

Dad, Ana and I spent the day walking through Cannes and shopping. The weather was perfect: calm, seventy-ish and sunny. All in all very relaxing, as the trip has been so far. Ana is going to go to school with Vanessa on Thursday. It's probably a good thing that Vanessa is in a bilingual class. That's probably going to be the day that Dad and I hit the Casino in Antibes.

That was a moving account of Joanne's service, Athena. You always did paint a nice picture, whether using oil, water or words. And Scott, I managed to get four Red Sox tickets for May 3rd. Mona and David will be coming with us. Can't wait to see you. More later...

well while paula, mark, scott, melinda, jessamyn, ginny, bill and peter are visiting in the kitchen i am finally catching up on the web page. we just came from the service for joanne. sad but good. a lot of people including some of her granddaughters said good things. a lot of good music too (that's always the part that makes me cry) including moonlight sonata which (as leslie reminded me) joanne used to play on the piano. it was good to take some time to reflect on her rich and adventurous life, and sad to say goodbye. Happy travels, joanne! see you when we get there! a lot of relatives were there, all looking quite well. louie stylos was talking about a get together in lowell this summer ... a fine idea i think ... at any rate, jim, kim, leslie and pam and all who will miss joanne: our thoughts are with you today and for the times ahead. feel the sorrow, be thankful for the gifts, bring her along on your new adventures. a sad day for all of us, but one to be grateful for our family. ps just overheard from peter in the kitchen : i was really impressed with flaherty's kids ...may the gods bless you all...

Make that 75 French Francs. I'm proud of you, too, Melinda. You'll love Smith. I'll leave your 75 francs here, and you'll have it when you get here in June. It must be good to have the waiting over. Good luck with your short timers' disease.

Smith sounds to me like a good choice. Centainly you will get more visits from your Mama (and others, too) in Northampton than you would in New York City. Now I have reason to wear the Smith sweatshirt that 'Thena left behind. Are you glad all the waiting is over? Can you keep your nose to the grindstone for another month?

Oh, and the final Melinda tally: rejection #5 from Columbia. It looks like Smith will be the lucky college to be graced by Melinda.

Greetings from France. We are here, safe and sound, and one suitcase short. Ana says that we need to get rid of that one anyway, it is the one that they always lose. Otherwise, the trip was delightfully uneventful, save one rail strike that made getting into Amsterdam a bit more challenging. More later, after a nap....

Dad, be sure that you or someone emails your arrival info to Mark. Paula, if you have any old Disney videos that no one watches anymore, send them over with Dad. §

You're right Paula, Pam doesn't read the messageboard (doesn't have a computer) and is turning 25 today (yikes), but I'll pass along your birthday wishes. I talked to her this morning and she is good. Still babysitting and working at the BeerWorks. For her birthday I'm taking her to see Sting in May.

Dad is probably arriving at Paula's right about now. Hope to see him out here in the next few days (I'll lend you my boots if you want: still over a foot of snow on the ground here!)

Steve, what a mean trick! Mona, I hope you didn't think of any mean ones to play on David, he's too nice a guy.

Well, you can't use the one I used on Ana, faking a call from Uncle Mark then telling her we needed to cancel our France trip. We had nice visits with Ken & Patsy, then the Pingrees yesterday. Today is a more mellow, we're waiting for the rain to stop so we can go and fly Ana's kite. Hope everyone is having a nice April so far. Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit...§
