Just to let everyone know that Mom arrived safe and sound in Seattle with her friend Jane. I dropped them off at Ken and Patsy's last night, and they are probably still up catching up from the past fifty years. Ana and I are getting quite excited about our recent trip, and are counting the days. §

I have been in touch with a paulos (pavlos) stylos from Ioannina Greece. He writes some interesting things about the Stylos family. He traces it back to 1750 in a place called Zagonohoria, Can't tell yet if we are relatred since he knows nothing of any Styloses living in Grevena. Hw writes of a village "skotina" near Katorinni (macadonia) where about 1/3 of the inhabitants sre Stylos. More when I find out more.

I can report on Athena, since she is probably resting up from the big regatta yesterday, or else she is deep in the books trying to keep up with that part of her university life. We drove down to Clemson yesterday, leaving Brevard with some, not much, snow on the ground, then as we went over the mountain that separates NC and SC we drove though deep and beautiful snow, which also made the many hair-pin curves rather exciting. Then over on the other side it was warm and sunny and we sat all day beside the lake and rubbed sun-block on each other and got to experience the demanding sport of boat racing. Athena rowed in 3 races, two back-to-back. What a civil sport, even in important competitions. I can see why she loves it, and endures the very strenous training they have to go through. (Wait till you see her muscles!) I leave tomorrow for Seattle and a week or so later I'll fly to Boston and will see many of you one place or the other.

Happy Birthday, Chuck McSweeney. Isn't it odd, those things that we remember from our childhood. I haven't seen Chuckie in at least 25 years. What is even more amazing is those things that we forget. Happy Birthday to all you forgotten folk, too, wherever (and whoever) you might be!

Right on, Scott! Glad it's all coming together. And especially thanks for the Pam update: I was just about to ask!

Speaking of celebration plans, I plan to celebrate Paul's 9th birthday on Aug. 1 this summer, no matter what else is going on. Not sure how it will fit in with the rest of what's going on. Or even if. But there it is.

Great, Scott! Is Holyoke even closer than Pittsfield? What will Jeff be doing next year? Does he officially 'graduate' this year? If so, we should plan some formal party or ritual for him, don't you think? Maybe we could sneak some time out of the weekend of the reunion. And what is this, another spring baby for the Courtney-Styloses? Keep us posted...§

I finally heard about the job in Holyoke: they offered me a job and I accepted it. St. Patrick was smiling on me this year. So I won't be going to Worcester after all, and don't have to worry about moving the following year. Now we are just waiting for Pam to have her baby: Cameron is due about the first of April. You'll be the first to know!

Thank you from Vanessa for your birthday greetings. The Birthday Girl had a fine day - Sunny and Sixties - and enjoyed a birthday at home, in wait for her party next weekend. She was showered with love and gifts from Sophie, and spent a few hours in the park play and trying out her new roller blades, as well as the knee/elbow/wrists pads. I hope she is sound asleep now... As for myself, tomorrow is the first day of a new job in the WebSite business. There is a two month trial period, so wait and see.

Well! It's Saturday night here, but that would make it Vanessa's sixth birthday in France, if my calculations are correct. Happy Birthday!!!!! Ana and I can't wait to see you, four weeks from today. If there is anything special you would like us to bring, send us an email, and we will do our best. Meanwhile, we are singing happy birthday here, one third of the way around the world. Have a great seventh year....We all love you!!!!

Location? Do you think the current owners would mind if we used 60 Montvale?

Deciding on all this stuff is going to be just like a Murray Road general meeting, I just know it!

Whatever happens, I'm sure I'll be at the mercy of you all for boarding, and I plan to do clean up in any case. I cook real good too. :)

And I hope to see as many extended family members (and friends) as possible this trip -- but that makes for a pretty huge number -- can we handle a big crowd? Hope hope.

YES, we are resolved.(Aren't we?) Again, I offer my humble abode as a location. I nominate Athena to be in charge of the entertainment. But what about the food? And the weather. Hm....I guess we cannot control that...Mom and Dad, you are in charge of letting me know who you want invited. And speaking of plans, who plans to be at the cabin when this summer? I am thinking about a week or two around July 4th.

So, are we resolved? The big reunion will be held in the Boston area on the weekend of July 30 - August 1? Speak now or forever hold your pizza. Or whatever it is. Okay, next task the organizing committee. It seems like we have room for help with 1)music 2)location 3)guest list/invitations 4)accomodations 5)skirts, oops skits... Any ideas or volunteers? Oh yeah, whoever doesn't volunteer gets stuck with cleanup. Timesa wastin'.....§

Hmmmpphh...I thought I would be one of the first ones to wish AKS (or should that be AKS the first) a Happy Birthday, but looks like I am last. Oh well, at least I am on top of the list. Athena, I want you to know that I have hung eleven AVKS originals in my office and I have received an inordinate number of compliments on them. Maybe I will take some digital photos of my walls and email them to you. The best part, of course, is that everyday I am surrounded by Athena. I hope that you have a great 37th year? When you were a kid did you used to try to figure out how old you would be when the century changed? Didn't it seem so old then? Amazing how young it seems now. Do something fun in my name.....§

the following is the translation of Giota Stylou's message. today the 26th of feb. 1999 I found your web site and decided to communicate with you. I wish you a good day from Greece and wish all of you to live well, although I do not know you except only uncle Panagiotis, uncle Petros and uncle Vasilis.I believe we have the opportunity if we want to get better acquainted from here. You have many greetings and my own and especialy from my father who even though is sick remembers everything of his cousins. Excuse my writing in greek but understand english well but I cannot write it. salutaions Giota Stilou. end of translation. I tried to be literal and one or tow words maybe did not come out correctly. In any event thank you Giota very much If you keep writing it will help your english and my translating will help my greek. Also if I have your email address we can put if in the website and mailing would be easy. Thanks again and greeting to your folks and to John and his wife

Heh. Maybe I'm just cranky enough for the whole town! Or maybe I just need some time for long walks. Ah well . . . Miranda is not feeling well, so she's here with me at work. Lots of fun stuff for kids to do here, but not so much fun when you're not feeling well. Rabbit rabbit.

Ooo . . . a show-and-tell/fashion show/talent-show sounds purrrrfect! I'll send you instructions on how to install a Greek Keyboard. I could even tell you how to read it. But when it comes to understanding you're gonna have to look elsewhere!

March is starting out with -- you guessed it -- rain! Oy! Everyone in Washington is getting CRANKY! All that, and they've put one of the small boats back on my ferry run, which means I have to show up at least 20 minutes early at the ferry dock to catch the same boat -- that's another 3 hours and 20 minutes of cummuting each week for the next 5 weeks. Harumph.

Looks like July 31 it is. The band who may play consists of a hammered dulcimer player, a guitar player, a singer, and alot of harmony. Not too rowdy. Now about those skits....Athena?
Paula
Sunday, February 28, 1999 at 06:04:21 (PST)
Not too much deep snow here in Worthington, but enough to ski on. Waiting anxiosly for spring. July 24th or 31st would be OK for us. I don't much care about having a band, as long as people can talk easily. I'm looking forward to seeing lots of friends and relatives that I don't get to see very often. I still don't know when I'm taking my boards, but since that will be on a Monday through Wednesday it shouldn't interfere with the get-together. I should get the notification in March. We got a large antique cookstove yesterday but haven't got it installed yet. If anyone has any personal experience with one of these things give me a call.

For IE4, try this: right click in the web page to bring up the "context menu". Choose "Language", then click on Greek alphabet. Worked for me. Though I can't remember if I've already installed PanEuro language support on this machine or not.

Anyway, thanks to Panagiota for giving us an interesting puzzler today!

Friday, February 26, 1999 at 17:27:00 (PST)

If you are having trouble reading the message from Greece: In Netscape 4, select View - Encoding, and select the ISO version of Greek. In IE4, right click on this page and select Language, then pick Greek ISO from the list. In IE3, I think the process is similar. In all IE versions, you must first load and install the support pack for Pan-European languages. You will find it on the Microsoft web site.

I sent it to "ebx-fin@otenet.gr" If you can put your exact email address in the message itself it would help us to write to you. In the meantime we will continue to try to display the greek letters.

Not too much new here, but since I know you all need something to read, allow me to dribble for moment. Ana and I are excited about our trip to France. But wouldn't you know, that I have my first trial in years coming up, and they scheduled it in the middle of the trip. I'm confident I'll be able to move it (the date, not the venue) so things should go as planned. Ana and I have been busy collecting nice warm summer clothes, and practicing our French. Mark and Sophie: we are planning to bring alot of clothes that don't fit Ana anymore, but if you have any special requests, now would be a good time to make them. So is it settled? The weekend of July 24th in Boston? I've pencilled it in. Any objections? Now would be a good time to make them. Paula: How is the snowstorm? We hope to see all the Bill and Louie Styloses on the weekend of the 24th too, of course. That's it from here. Ana and I are probably headed over to the Oregon coast tomorrow for the weekend.

Bill's surgery went well this 16th of Feb. He looks funny with all the monitoring devices attached but when one has his blood flow to the brain interrupted an exceeding amount of care must be performed to monitor the recuperative process. Doctors were happy, I was happy Ginny was happy, Kathi was happy, and Peter was happy. I can't tell about Bill but he seemed to take it all in stride. We will see tomorrow how he spent the night.

I wanted to jump up and down like Charlie Brown, and say "I got one, I got one!" but I try to tone down my cynicism with the kids around... Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Ping. Who said it wouldn’t last? Otherwise, all quiet on the eastern front. The kids are doing great, enjoying their vacation here with me, having a lot of bike races (no injuries as of yet), and playing day in and day out.

Happy Valentine's Day! And Happy Anniversary to Mona and David. It is a good thing we have reasons to celebrate this month, gives us a chance to forget the long cold winter. Now on to the business at hand. The weekends of July 10 and 17th won't work for us as Melinda is going to Disneyland (traveler that she is). So I suggest June 26 or July 24. How does that work for the rest of you?
Paula

Congratulations, Mona and David. I would have sent you a gift but I couldn't find out what was the appropriate gift for the 17th anniversary. Did someone say extruded plastic? No? Paper mache'? Oh well, never mind, Just celebrate and be happy and extend your contract. About The Date. Any time is OK with us. How about the week-end after July 4th? We should be able to get this set up the next 4 months, but I agree, the sooner the better. So put in your input, everybody.

> Speak now, or forever hold your peace.

Last time I heard those words was about 17 years ago . . . nobody objected, and so, the rest is history. And they said it would never last. Thanks for all the everything, David.

In any case, Paula's plan sounds like a good one to me.

It's official. Ana and I will be going to France from April 9-16th. In fact, I have out tickets and passports in my hot little hands right now. If anyone else is thinking about the Riviera, that would be a good time to think about. We'll be flying over the pole, so won't be making an east coast stop. We do plan to be at the anniversary reunion, however. It sure would be good if we could agree on a date sooner rather than later. What was it we were last talking about, the fourth of july weekend? Time is growing short, so let's have some input. And thanks to Jay and Debbie for creating this little flurry of activity on our little board. It was starting to become a bored board. §

I gotta tell you, it makes me cringe to see my words in print. I mean, they feel so clever when I'm writing them. But when I see them . . . ewwwwww!

At work we're approaching our "ship date" and the general atmosphere gets turned up a notch. Like it can really stand to get turned up at all -- OY! I need to buckle down and get my skits together.

Just think: if a quarter of the people that pass through this website left a message, we wouldn't have to keep reading the same old ones. So don't just be a reader, be a writer. After all, how many chances do we get to see our words in print, getting flashed around the world? So leave a greeting as you pass by, or at least wave...

well news from tigertown is that we went out on the water for the first time yesterday hooray! it was a strange and happy flashback to all the other times on the water (it's been ten years of rowing for me this spring!) like the first day of spring or fall how it kind of skips you back through all the other years of spring or fall . . .weather has been beautiful with the exception of last weeks snow . . .school is going well and it looks like i will get my wish of leaving clemson with a solid portfolio and a clear mind from all the alone-think-time . . . but boy/girl am i going to be ready to party with the girls. and boys. i am taking a movement/acting class that requires us to learn a monologue, anyone got any suggestions? looking forward to a fun summer and especially the golden anniversary . .. .i told mom fourth of july was good because it gives us more time to get our skits together . . . anyone interested? or am i going to have to act out the entire family . . . love to all from athena

I don't think they have ground hogs here, then again it is already spring some days, tomorrow is forcasted for the 60s.

As for news, Jerome is now into his second week without a pacifier, and got a new bicycle for it (his old one had been stolen). He is also one week into riding without training wheels. Just have to get him to keep his speed down. So for now, it is helmet and pads. His speaking is getting clearer, and that was one of the reasons for stopping the pacifier. As for Vanessa, she has a new eye doctor, who seems to think that the problem is more serious than the first doctor (the old, and now the new head of the department at the childrens hospital in Nice). She will be getting special attention for a month or so, and then we will re-evaluate her condition. She does not seem to be bothered - as long as it does not stop her from talking...

That's it for now, still no fixed plans for the coming months, but you will know soon after I do!

Happy Groundhog's Day to one and all. Also to Raymond Layne, wherever he is. My understanding is that the #1 groundhog did NOT see his shadow, meaning that we can expect an early spring. Any complaints about that? Not likely.

Yowsers! I guess Big Brother is pretty busy these days...I figure you did a check of stylos.net's log and saw I was checking links through....http://members.tripod.com/eelanom....(monalee was taken). Tripod offers free websites, and they're FrontPage enabled, so I'm checking some real-world scenarios. Check it out, if youwant, but it's all in German....that's the idea, get it?

Anyway...the power went out at our house at 3AM last night, and just now got turned back on. Yet, we all went to work and school, and got now break out of it at all. Happy weekend all! Especially JokeMaster Friedman, if you're out there!

Hi there, all....We had a very nice dinner with Mark Friedman on Tuesday night. The kids never seem to forget to ask him for his latest jokes. Children always seem to be pretty adept at figuring out who the good people are. Other than that, things have been pretty slow and steady here. Especially the rain. Ana and I are going to celebrate Super Sunday by going to see the Broadway production of Annie. The tickets were a Christmas present. It looks like Ana and I will be spending our spring break in Antibes. That is, if Uncle Mark can find us a decent place to stay (hint, hint). That's the news from this corner. 'Till next time.....§

Surely somebody has some news. Is getting the flu and getting well the only thing that has happened in this family in so many days? I know some of you had a rendezvous with Mark Friedman in Seattle. What else? If you post your news I can call off my spies. Our news? Well, let's see. Paul has started his spring clean-up, refusing to believing that there might still be some winter. (On this day last year we had the big storm that left us without power temporarily and without 4 of our trees permanently.) We went to see a hypnotist at the college last night (he was taking a break from Las Vegas) and he was very good. I think he had half the student body asleep or doing idiotic things up on the stage at the same time. As we left there were students outside the building "killing" leprechauns (because of a post-hypnotic suggestion) trying to get their bag of gold. Raven, the hypnotist assured everybody that when they had killed their third leprechaun they would be fully out of their hypnotic trance. So that's life here in the slow lane. Now it's your turn to sit down, log on and add your bit. RLS

Greetings to all of you who are getting more winter than we are, as well as to you in France and SC who are getting less. If I were in Massachusetts I would probably be playing Scrabble with my teacher-friend and neighbor, Rose. That was our tradition on no-school days. Instead, it has been business as usual. The sun is shining brightly and we had an unusual number of squirrels in the back yard this morning, including one white one. Lots of birds, too, sounding like spring! Some of the winter pansies are still blooming, in spite of the fact that we had a snow cover on Christmas day and an ice storm while we were away in early January. We got our photos back from our trip and some of them should be appearing on these pages before long. Thanks for the letters, Linda, Melissa and Joey. I will answer them soon. Keep posting messages, everybody, 'cause I keep checking this spot. RLS aka MOM

Wow! Sounds exciting in the great Atlantic Northeast. Here in the Pacific Northwest we need to head to the mountains to find those kind of snow walls. Which is precisely what Ana and I might do this weekend. We may go to a cabin in Oregon (a few cabins actually) that some old law school era friends have rented. It depends on how we both feel when she comes over tonight. I hope you have plenty of fire wood Paulala. I hope all is well. §

Get well soon, Betsy. We are here in the middle of a snow and ice storm in Massachusetts (right Scott?). Schools have been cancelled, I took the day off, and we sit here waiting for the power to go off. Rather nice inside watching the plows add more and more snow to the ever-growing wall at the end of the driveway. And now we have a four day weekend! Jess returns to college Monday. That's the news from the slippery Northeast. How are the rest of you?

Well, what looked like a cold, has turned into Strep Throat for Betsy. She's been under the weather since Saturday, when she took part in a local basketball tournament. I thought it was just butterflies in her stomach :( Anyway...Miranda will be home early from school taday, and I'll be heading in to work to check out the damage that can be done while one is away for a few days. Hope YOU all are well, anyway!

Well! We made it. Finally. It is Saturday, 2:00 pm and we're here after spending the night in Cincinnati. That was not part of the plan, but the snow and ice-storms up and down the east coast changed the plans of many travellers. Our bags are still flying around somewhere, or sitting somewhere and we hope to get them eventually. The good part about getting home was seeing Athena's car in our driveway. She had turned up the heat in the house and was waiting for us. The power had been off so we lost whatever telephone messages might have come in. (Maybe digital answering machines do have a disadvantage.) Fortnately the computer is up and running. Right now I'm hungry, Paul is making bacon and eggs, which he has been missing. I'll write more details of our very satisfactory trip to France a little later.RLS

Dropped the Folks off at the airport, so they should be posting in the next 12 - 24 hours. As for summer plans, I am not yet sure when I/we will be there. The kids have July and August off from school, and will be with me for one of those months, to be determined... If not with them, I will come for a weekend for fear of being the only missing party.

I am back to my previous suggestion of the July 3 and 4th weekend here in in the Northeast. At least three of us siblings will be living here then. We could congregate here, or I could look into renting a lake/ocean side summer house somewhere. That could be fun. It would have to sleep, what, about 21 people? What do you think?

June 6 in Berea will be pretty hard for us to manage....should we start an email round-robin to see if we can make this get-together/blowout happen? Sure am jealous of all that sunshine, mom and dad! You'd hate it here now....dark and gloomy. But the wonderful thing is how great it feels when the sun does finally peek through!

Hello, y'all over there in the old country. We are at Mark's place at the moment, having just got back from Cannes. Saw where Jerome was born. Saw lots of "beautiful people" mostly wearing very high platform shoes. My theory is that the three inches of foam keeps them from feeling the cobble stones. Mark says don't try to make it logical...

Sorry not to have been in touch before, but I knew Mark would check in with you occasionally. We have a nice place right on the marina, and with a grocery store within a few steps. Everything seems very expensive, so I'm not tempted to go shopping.

We've had fun with the kids, who always (almost) seem in fine spirits. Paula, they still remember the words to "Open, shut them". And they can beat us at the Memory game, which we play with regular cards.

We will be home very late Friday night, the Lord willin' and the creek don't rise.

The storms here seem to be alot worse on the east coast than the west. Although I wouldn't know, I have spent the last three days in bed with the flu. Things seem to be better, now, however. I even had to send Ana home a day early. They must have dropped the Dollar from the Euro because it sounded so . . . . American. Yes, Mark, a week is very short indeed. Ana and I will be spending a week in Boston either in February or in April. We need to be finalizing our plans for the celebration of P&R's 50th soon. I suggest that we do it on the 6th of June in Berea. We need to get cracking on those plans, though, since that is reunion weekend there. Let's have some input...§

Too busy enjoying the warm over here... It was originally called EuroDollar, then they changed it to The Euro for some reason... Yes, you no longer need to enter your Email address - when I get a better hang of cookies, I will even fill it in for you. Everything is going fine over here on the Riviera, getting in some sight seeing and some visiting. Not much to report. The kids enjoy playing cards with their Grandfather, helping their Grandmother in the kitchen, and re-arranging their apartment. We are glad to have them here, and it seems that a week is very short, but we are making the best of it. So, how are the storms Stateside?
