Happy New Year! I have a feeling that 1999 will bring joy and peace to us all. Here's to new beginnings, resolutions, and those family bonds that keep us going. Love to you all.

And we will be last, as usual. Ana and I are going to spend a quiet New Year's Eve having dinner with friends in Tacoma. If the rain quits, and we can stay awake, we may try to make it back to Seattle by midnight to watch them blow 1500 fireworks from atop the Space Needle at midnight. For those of you that can't be here, you can join in the action by tuning in to www.spaceneedle.com at midnight Pacific Time. Or better still, wait until next year, and come out to see them implode the Kingdome on Millenium Eve. We hope everyone has a happy and safe new year. See you next year....§

Sorry if it seems like I've been incognito....truth is I'm barely keeping my head above water, what with work, the house, the holidays, the weather, and all. We had great fun on Christmas! I'll be taking the rest of the week off to deal with accumulated STUFF of all sorts. And hey! Paula sent me a camera, so the chances of getting pix from the Pingrees has increased greatly -- thanks so much, Paula. More thank yous will be coming in email -- I WILL GET CAUGHT UP!!!

The REAL Christmas came to Acton on Sunday. We had our Turkey dinner at a FULL table, lots of cousins, laughter, music and gift giving. All in all I figured we had 6 cousins, 4 assorted friends and significant others, 3 Stylos siblings, 3 inlaws, and 1 baby in utero. Now we can move on to New Years.

For those of you wondering, we ate manicotti for Christmas. Well, it was red anyway. We are looking forward to turkey tomorrow with Athena and Scott and family. Mona, how did you all enjoy Christmas? And Mark? Still hoping you get here, Steve. And Mom and Dad; I can't believe that you in the sunny south got the white Christmas!

It's a green Christmas here in Worthington, but that's OK with me. We have had a very nice Christmas with all the kids here including Pam and Chris. Sorry we missed your call Steve. Happy holidays to everyone!

I'm having a nice Christmas in Portland. Up until late yesterday afternoon, it looked like we would have a White Christmas. But then the snow turned to rain, and we are instead having a Christmas filled with Pacific Northwest sunshine (the rest of the planet calls this rain). Everything is fine here. I will be driving back to Seattle tonight, and making my Christmas calls from the car. Hope to talk to all of you then. Love you all.....§

Well this continues to be a different kind of Christmas here. No relatives, excepting us. We opened our Christmas Eve present around midnight, and as we all ended up staying up until around 2:00 am, Santa had a hard time doing his job. We got up by 7:00, Jess made us a wonderful breakfast, and opened presents until 11:00. That was fun. Good loot. Then off to get the Turkey ready for the oven only to find it a little (okay a lot) past its prime. Now we are looking for alternatives. Pasta? Peanut butter sandwiches? Any suggestions? I miss you all, and hope you get your Christmas wish this year. Love from me.

It is Christmas Eve and as per tradition, we opened our one present. And now I have a new Pentax camera to take with me to France. So expect to see the results in this space before too long. Warm holiday wishes to all of you. Scattered though we are, I don't feel that far away from any of you. A lot of that is due to telephone and email, and a lot of it is due to feeling loved and loving. There are many good ways to do Christmas and this is one of them. Our Christmas tree-in-a-pot shines brightly, the house is warm and there are carols sporadically: sometimes from the TV or radio, sometimes from the harp and sometimes in our own voice. So here's to you and however you find yourself celebrating Christmas, and to winding down 1998 in any manner that pleases you and to getting ready for 1999, and all the yet-unknown things it will bring. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

Yes, Steve. Odd indeed. This summer for sure.
Paula
Wednesday, December 23, 1998 at 15:37:43 (PST)
I was sitting around reflecting on the fact that this will be the first Christmas that I will not see any members of my family of origin in many years. Then I realized that, in all likelihood, none of the members of my family of origin will see any other member. While that seems to be odd, it seems to be okay. I don't feel any less close to any of you because of it. I'll just save my good cheer for next summer's reunion, at which time, in Athena's words, "we'll party like it was 1999." Best wishes to all for a great holiday season...§

It was so - Scott is good, Scott is great - we thank him, for his coming was great. What pleasing rhyme and feeling we find in that song. I never thought 44 years ago it would come to this. It was a blessing then -- it is a blessing now. Have a happy birthday Scott and may the gods share in your achievements. Love from Panos.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SCOTT. I don't know if I am number six or number four. But as the only older big sister you will ever have, let me say, happy birthday little brother. Hope you have a great (though nippy) day there in the woods of Worthington, and are treated in a way that Great Scott deserves. Scott is great, Scott is good........See you in a 8 days. Love from..

Me second! Isn't this great? We all get to share in everybody else's birthdays. So now we get to shower Scott with attention, affection (everything but gifts: we'll leave that to the people who share his breakfast table.) So have a good birthday, Scotty-boy. I hope you're not "on call" or anything and that you get to do whatever makes you happy. We will raising a glass to you down here. Love, Mom

Aw, Shucks!!! I wish you were all here to see me blush. I had a very warm and peaceful birthday, even the it was the coldest day of the winter (so far) here. I spent lots of relaxing time with Ana and a few close friends, and topped it off with cake and ice cream with Aunt Pat. I can't help but fondly remember that my first memory is the third birthday party Patsy had for me on the day before Scott was born. Forty-four years ago, today. Let's see, that would make you forty-four, Great Scott. Let me be the first to say happy birthday to you. Oops, you got me on that one, wishing happy birthday to yourself last Wednesday. Okay, I'll be a gracious second, second kids are that way. I don't have to tell you how much you all mean to me, but let me tell you anyway. We hope to see you all soon....§

Happy Birthday Steve! That must mean that Christmas is getting close. I am starting my last day at work for this year, that is if things go according to plan. I'll spend the last weekend in Boston, then fly out on Monday to have Christmas with my kids under the palm trees of Antibes.

5000, WOW! Even considering the fact that some of have to go through the Stylos Network to get to the internet, I think that's pretty amazing. Scott, I'm sure our alert and ingenious webmaster will come up with the appropriate prize for being number 5000.

Hey, I'm the 5000th visitor to the site. I should win a gift certificate to the stylos.net online catalog or something. Happy birthday to Ludwig Beethoven (I guess there's a limit to how happy it can be when you've been dead for a few hundred years). And an early happy birthday to MF, SJS and SAS.

The Pingree Manse survived the onslaught of 6 - Spice Girl Lovin' Young Ladies, celebrating Betsy's birthday with a Pajama Party! (but just barely) If anyone says "Tell Me What You Want, What You Really Really Want" -- I'm going to THROTTLE them!! OY! But, with the birthday season behind us, we've welcomed the Christmas/Holiday Season with open arms, and have a naked Norwegian Spruce standing in the livingroom, and boxes of decorations to put out.....mmmm......love that Christmas Tree smell. Happy Hanukah to all celebrants! The festival of lights -- yeah, lights -- THAT's what we need!

A very happy birthday to Christopher Douglas Layne, who turned 50 quietly yesterday. We had been planning to have a small birthday party for him at his mom's yesterday, but our plans have evolved into a brunch there tomorrow. We hope that the next fifty are even better than the last....

Sorry, but it looks like my winter break with Ana won't start until the evening of the 27th. So the earliest that we will get there is the 28th. I will probably work a few days that week, and get there on the 30th and stay until the 3rd of next year. Sometimes you just need to take what you can get. I hope all is well...§

I think the 27th at Paula and Mark's sounds good. It would work out good for us since Pam will be visiting us from the 24th to the 27th and we could combine a visit to Paula's with giving Pam a ride home. Will Steve be around by the 27th?

Things seem to be getting pretty quiet around here. Hopefully everyone is out shopping for my Christmas presents. I know I actually got a bit of shopping done in November, must be a sign of getting older. Ana and I are at Mona's house, having a nice relaxing Sunday, watching Mona lounging around drinking coffee and reading the paper in bed. We still don't know exactly what our Christmas plans are. Leo !! I was extremely happy to see you message. Why just yesterday I was asking mark if he knew your email address. By the way I used to sign my father's name on my report cards, and he wrote it "AHILEAS" and I think I could still write it like he did. In any event I wonder how you are doing and I will try to see you before I go back to N.C. In the meantime take good care of yourself.

Wow, Betsy, I can't believe that you're ten already! It seems like just yesterday that... Oh well, enough of that. How well I remember my tenth birthday. And how permanent reaching double digits seemed. You'll never be able to write your age without lifting your pen again. Ana and I are coming out there on Saturday, but I guess you might be out being ten. We hope we see you. In the meantime, we hope that you have the happiest of birthdays. Love ya.....§

Welcome back to the states to webmaster Mark! It's great being able to keep tabs on everybody on-line. We had a good thanksgiving at Jojo's new house on the cape. Pam is looking great. I just took a look at this site using Internet Explorer Version 3.02, with 256 colors. Not only does it start with a JavaScript error, the graphics did not look good at all, and the background was grey were it should have been white. Basically, a mess. So, if you are using IE3 - update. If you do not have a strong enough machine for IE4, or do not want it to take over too much of your system, Netscape 4 is a good choice.

I know it’s hard to believe, but Christmas is six weeks from today. Ana and I were planning to go to France, but it looks like that will not be able to happen this year. We have talked about going to Massachusetts, however. It looks like Timmy and Jillian won’t be coming back to Seattle for Christmas, and we’d like to see them. If that happens, we would probably arrive in Boston the day after Christmas, and stay approximately one week. Anyone else going to be around there? Keep us posted…§

hey everybody! well i guess i haven't read the web page for a while and missed a slew of birthdays. So happy november to us all and it was good to get caught up (a little) on the family scene. Well we did win a medal (bronze) in our mixed eight in knoxville. Our women's four hasn't won any yet but we get better every race. Last race of the season is tomorrow in augusta georgia. Still trying to get some work done in between practices. Looking forward to a brief trip home for thanksgiving and a longer one at christmas. Hope everyone is happy and busy. Or just happy. Paula i hope your ankle is better soon. Love to all from athena.

Yeah, proper case, as in sentences starting with a capital, then lower case, and ending with a period. For those of you at Microsoft, it is called sentence case, as in format case. And no illegal @stylos.net email addresses, 'cause they all go to me. So there!

Sounds good to me, too, Louie. I guess you must be getting quite a large place. Lemme think, the summer of '99... That is less than 9 months away... Something you are not telling us? And no shouting on the Internet (that means that proper case messages look much nicer than uppercase), or the omnipresent WebMaster might get you! In any event, welcome, and come back again, soon. And get that lazy sister of your over to send a message of her own. Greetings to the whole family.

An extended reunion in the summer of '99 sounds great, Lou. Count me in, just give me plenty of advance notice. And congrats on the upcoming addition and the new home. Keep us posted. And to the rest of you...keep up the good work, we filled this guestbook up twice as fast as the first one. Or is WebMarkster growing more impatient as he grows gracefully older? Or is his computer just growing slower? Things are all fine on the west coast, although it seems that winter has arrived with a determination to stay. §

Hi cousins. Lou and Lisa again. We are having a very active fall. Moving to our new home on 11/20. We'll be returning to the American birthplace of our roots - Lowell, MA. Nice new home close by to mom and dad. We should be able to host the next extended reunion (summer 99?) Hopefully we'll also have a new addition to the family tree. By for now. Lou and Lisa

Well, I had a GREAT time yesterday...also filled with hugs and kisses, and a long overdue visit with Aunt Pat. But now that I think about it, I never did find the time to try out the bouncy thing myself -- looked like a ton of fun from the outside, though. I asked Miranda about that, Steve, and she said "yeah, I was just thinking about that today", but I'll let her come on here and tell you about it. Right now she (and 3 girlfriends) are still snoozing...had a pretty busy day herself!

Happy 14th Birthday Miranda. I looked at Ana this morning, and I thought, "Ana is exactly the same age as Miranda was, when she (Ana) was born." Do you remember me calling you from the hospital that morning? You were the first one that I called. And here is a scary thought: When Ana is the age that you are at this moment, it will be your twenty-first birthday. Thanks for being in our family, Miranda, and I hope that this, your fifteenth year, is a great one...§

Thanks for the birthday messages. We had a great party at Ken and Patsy's. We had a big, blow up castle that we all bounced on. Next year I want all the same people to come to my party. I got lots of presents, including a BIG snuggly doll (bigger than me) from Tim and Jillian. It's full of hugs and kisses from them, and I hug it all the time. Being seven feels the same as being six. Thanks again.... ANA

Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear ANA, happy birthday to you. You will have to provide your own music, since words are all I can send over the internet. I think about now you are having a birthday party at Aunt Pat's. I'm sure it will be a big success. I think seven is a wonderful age, and I expect this to be a good year for you. We send you love. Happy Birthday to Miranda and Ana from the East Coast. I hope this feels like a westward spreading wave of Birthday wishes to two well- desrving nieces. Hope you each are carrying on the family tradition of celebrating by eating and doing just what you want on this great day. And then, start a new tradition of telling the rest of us just what that was! Love to you both, and happy birthday.

7/11, 7/11. That one is at least easy to remember. Happy Birthday to Ana. Vanessa and Jerome hope that they will be seeing (one of) their favorite cousin soon. What are you doing to celebrate? And Happy Birthday to Miranda. This must make you old enough to do some of those things you want. Like go out alone, or even work! (heh heh) How nice that it comes on a weekend this year. Do tell how you spend this special day. And it is good to see Mark A. back in the chatter. The one who goes back and corrects his mistakes, saving the spelling checker some work.

Now this may never end, and I hope I am not hogging the cybewaves or appearing a bit self-centered. But if they were bear trees their fur would probably keep them warm or they would be hibernating or something. So say bare trees and we will all be happy. Good night. Mark

I mean stay long. But while I am back way not just chatter on. The leaves lay lightly on the ground, leaving bear trees already shivering with the anticipation of winter (OK really the wind but ). Tomorrow, Saturday and remember I already worked Friday and I'm supposed to only work 4 days, I spend 3 hours speaking with 200 family members of severely and persistently mentally ill (SPMI to their friends) people--ain't life strange. Besides echoing the various birthday congratulations and all I do want to give my special congratulations and best wishes to Sophie on her new job. That's great and I bet will feel good. Mark

Thanks for all the best wishes on my day. Nothing like a hotel room to make a person appreciate home. The conference was great, and inspiring in some obsure way that would only make sense to someone in my convoluted line of work. St. Louis itself I saw next to nothing of except the arch which is very tall and impressive and you can go up in it and look out tiny windows on the top out over the city honest--I didn't but someone I talked to did. Still, the shape compellingly despite its silver color reminds one of a far more widespread icon of an identical shape and more commercial meaning. By the way, Mark yes Brother Mark, what does it mean that i just typed about 150 characters on one line? Am I using your creation incorrectly? So now that I am using enter what does that do? Otherwise I am old and still cranky, but very much appreciate the good company of all of you. Remember to visit us often and still long. Mark

Woooo Hooo! for Sophie -- that's fantastic! Paul and I were both ill for Halloween....grrrrr. But he had fun (I think) giving out candy to the Trick and Treaters. We *did* run out of candy though...packs of Jr Highschoolers did us in! Thanksgiving....hmmm...can't think of any plans.

Sunday, November 01, 1998 at 08:33:21 (PST)
Well, we survived another halloween. We did have our house egged and had one pumpkin smashed though. Not too much candy left over either (strawberry twizzlers). Joey had 4 friends over, early birthday party) only one of whom had to go home sick. In other news, I will be spending a year working in Worcester after I finish in Pittsfield (July 1999). I'll be doing a fellowship in surgical pathology. I'll come home to Worthington on weekends and whenever I can during the week. This thanksgiving we are going to Linda's Mom's (JoJo) new house in Brewster on the cape. What are you doing?

Sunday, November 01, 1998 at 07:54:57 (PST)
Congratulations and bon chance, Sophie, from here, too. I'm sure you'll do well. We had more "trick or treaters" than last year. At one point it almost looked like we might not have any candy left over, and that wouldn't have been good since we bought our favorite kinds. We are currently expecting Athena to arrive, on her way back from the crew team's first race in Knoxville. Happy Hallowe'en to all.

Me too! I wanted to wish you Happy Birthday in French, then became unsure of the spelling, so I went to http://babelfish.altavista.com/, and came up with joyeux anniversaire!!! Dear Ramona, dear Paul, dear friends ... I hope you are all fine, and judging by the lively discussion on the net this seems to be the case. It is Friday evening here in London, and I have been back in this loud city for two weeks now. People still tell me that I look relaxed, but I fear that will change soon. There are just too many people here, bumping into each other on the "Tube" and running against each other everywhere. My vacations have been a lot of fun (and work and relaxation). After the stay in France for which my university paid for (there are still miracles in this world !!!) because I was going to write a paper about the French extreme right (and also did), I stayed in Hamburg with my (German) family for some days before going to Bonn where I interned with a Member of Parliament during the 6 weeks before the elections. Old man Kohl is gone and Germany has a new government ... which does not mean more than some better and some worse policies (and the end of the era Kohl. My sister is still living in Memphis, TN, and I am not sure when (and if !!!) she will be coming back to the old continent. However, knowing that she has Coke for breakfast frequently (ahhhh, Coca-Cola, I mean, of course), it seems very possible that she will stay there (really, only hard-core Americans have Coke for breakfast !!!). Alright, I think I shall join some friends in a strange place these people here call "pub" and have a "pint" thinking of you. Take care !!! Kai

I trust Mona got her packing done and arrived with more or less all her stuff. Melinda, my AIM buddy, informed me that Paula made it safe and sound. So, what is up to celebrate the big day?

Enjoyed Paula's edition of "Ramona's birthday" incl photos of Styloses at cabin summer 98. We're still having a wonderful time on Oahu, returning to Gig Harbor, WA 16Sep98. Patsy did a 1-wk workshop for teachers on Saipan in Sep. Cheers all.

Just because you are paranoid, does not mean that they are not all out to get you! Just kidding, Mona. I was wondering why you always got the last word? I am still waiting for a reply to my last mail! And aren't you supposed to be in N.C.? And thanks for giving me a chance to use that line, I have been looking for one since I found it.
You talking to me? (mls@stylos.net)

What I want to know is...why does the conversation always die just after I post something? Or am I being too paranoid?

I like the meet in Kingston suggestion!! You guys would just love it here! And the beginning of June makes it really really hard - with the kids still in school and all.... What I'm thinking of is flying back and renting a car and hanging around the east coast for a couple of weeks. Assuming I'm still working at that point -- it's always touch and go. Hey Steve - 10 years ago -- that was fun, I must say.

Well, I just checked the calendar, and the 6th of June is a sunday next summer. That should end the discussions about the when part. None of this, "but we're celebrating on the ...". As to the where, I would love to plan an extravaganza in France, Greece, Disneyland or the coast of North Carolina. But the only thing that really makes sense, in somewhere in Massachusetts, since there is so much extended family there. Therefore, my choices would be Paula's or Bill's, or a rented hall somewhere in the Boston area. The timing will be a little difficult, since the kids will still be in school, but we will have to work it out. Any other thoughts? §

I'm looking forward to a get together next summer. I'll be taking my boards in June or July. In previous years they told you the exact dates in advance, but this year they are going to a computerized test and testing dates will run for a period of 6 weeks or so (it is a 3 day test given on Mon-Wed). I won't know my testing dates for sure until about March, but if I know when we are planning to get together, I'm sure I can keep that time open. Probably May or early to mid-June would be best for me. I vote for Paula's house or somewhere else in the great Northeast.

No, Mark, I can truly say I can think of nothing more exciting. That memory will stay with you forever. Send those lovely children my love.

Happy trails to the Ladies for their Southern Reunion. As for next summer, I sure do not want to be odd man out. Still no news from these parts. Spending my first weekend in the new digs with the kids. At least promises to be active, if not exciting. Might even work in Jerome's first Two Wheeler lesson. Can you think of something more fun than that?

Yes, Stevie, I agree. Ma and Pa's 50th makes a very good (and convenient) reason to convene. I am open to any time and place. I am planning on working on specifics in NC next week. Mona will come join us, right Mona? And I vote she bring those other Pingrees with her. Let me also admit that I am VERY excited about my upcoming FIRST EVER solo vacation. My new plan is to spend a luxurious night alone in a motel on the way up. Okay, that may not sound like much to you, but to me it sounds thrilling. I will let you all know when I get there.

Yup! Gets pretty boring around this guestbook lately. Here's a good one for you - Happy Anniversary to me. Ten years ago today, we were all assembled in Marblehead. I know this might be hard for everyone to believe, but that was the last time that I was with all my siblings at once. I move that we find a way to get together soon, before something happens and it is too late. I suggest that we plan a little reunion next summer somewhere. Now I know if we do it in Kingston, Mona will be sure to make it. Maybe we should just take up a collection for her, or just exert as much collective peer pressure as we can. Leave your comments here. I hope that all is well for all, and that I see you all soon. §

No news may be good news, but it does make for a boring guestbook! I'll try to think of a good joke before my next appearance. So keep checking us out. RLS

You're driving?! Great -- be sure to bring your guitar, and any other sundry musical instruments you can think of. Hey, Athena, would you bring your steel string guitar, and let me use it? I won't be bringing mine on the plane (not just the hassle factor -- the case is kaput). I'm getting pretty revved up about this myself. Anything I can bring you from the Great PNW, Mom?

Mark and I just returned from Family Day at Marlboro, and can report that Jess is safe, sound, and happy. The weather and foliage was as stunning as Jess. Well almost. She has now solved her email dilemma and is ready for communication. I am getting excited about driving to NC next Saturday, 10/10, for a week long celebration of Mom's birthday. Why, if it wasn't for her (and Dad), where would we be?
