okay here's the carolina report: cabin was cold that first night but beautiful the next day, such a magic spot. paula and i did a little indoor/outdoor housekeeping and had a last sweet potato from the fire and a last look at the stream and wandered home (not on the blue ridge parkway becuse it's still closed on mount mitchell due to ice in the tunnels (they never heard of rocksalt down here)) an home to help mom with the flea market (fun and successful) and to go to southern folk art center where we made surprisingly few purchases but did see a great quilt show. Now we're packing the car (yay no more of my stuff in mom and dad's basement!) and driving to hickory tomorrow before we head north

Friday, March 26, 2004 at 17:04:01 (PST)
A few warm days and cold nights at the cabin does sound good about now. Does anyone know when they will be there this summer? I think Ana and I will come back for a week, and forgo Boston this summer. Ana is in camp for most of August, and we plan to go to Rex's eightieth birthday party in L.A in late July. So we are thinking early or late July for NC.

Spring sprung a bit early around here this year. It seems like it has been warm and sunny on the weekends and cold and rainy during the week. Can't complain about that, unless you are working outside like Mona.

Ana and I leave for Antibes in less than two weeks so we are starting to get excited. Wish you all could come along...That's it from here, more from there....§

Must be pretty chilly there at the cabin this time of year, even with the fire. Still I wish I was there too, having s'mores and playing boggle.

It's finally starting to feel like spring around here - temps in the 50's and a few crocuses in the front yard.

Right on, Melissa!!

flowers, flowers everywhere! We've had real March weather around here - beautiful sunny day on Monday - we hit 70 degrees! Also have had downpouring rain and intermittent hail. But the sun is up before I am (almost) these days. And I'm up by 6:30 ~ now that's a change!!

My own crocuses have come and gone, and the hyacinths and tulips and daffodils are emerging. My left arm can't quite keep up with my right (I do equal lifting with both), so I'm still sore, but don't need tylenol to sleep anymore.

Remember, March showers bring April flowers.

Hang in there Paula, before you know it it will be sunny and warm with little flowers popping up everywhere. Come to think of it, you'll be seeing those things alot sooner than I will, when you go south. Will be fun for you and AKS.

Looking forward to seeing Mark A. this weekend. Also this weekend, Melissa has her last race of the season, up in Maine again. Go Liss!

Thank you all so much for the birthday messages! i love how the personalities come through even though the writing all looks much the same. Thank you for the new version of the happy birthday song, vanessa and jerome. i am so glad you had cake. we had a little lemon cake from my friend ron, but mostly we had cookies. and ice cream. paula came from the farthest away, and ran the samosa factory with the volunteer/slave army. joey and lissa continued their near life-long streaks of party attendance. scott and anne were able to just walk over from wilson ave, and anne was sporting the best of all accessories, the decorated clothespin. I felt fully loved and indulged and my favorite part of all was when everyone sang moon river instead of "happy birthday" (which i suppose means we send the royalty check to johnny mercer instead of the two ladies in idaho)(and paula knew all the words) fifty voices make a beautiful sound! thank you all for thinking of me and joining me in my annual celebration of life. if anyone out there wants help planning their birthday party, large or small, this year, i'm your girl! mom and dad, i'll call you soon!

It feels like spring but there is still mounds of frozen snow that just don't want to disappear. I have a question for anyone with a better memory than me-for some reason it seemed that we use to celebrate March 1st. Have I lost it or is it a day that I forgot about.

We have been looking at colleges-Jess has it narrowed down to three of course in order of choice Oklahoma City University, UMASS Amherst, and Bridgewater State. We are going to visit Oklahoma the end of the month and UMASS Amherst this Friday. This has been fun looking at different schools.

My email address is khscott76@hotmail.com Happy Tuesday to all.

Yes, the rain has subsided and it was a very pleasant day today. The final totals of the rain yesterday ranged from 6 inches to 8 inches, depending on where on the Island you were. Of course for us, it was the day that we were traveling from the North Shore to Honolulu (on the south shore). We had to turn around once because a road was washed out. That cost us two hours. All in hour, it turned out to be a four hour drive. I didn't know that was possible on an island that measures 45 miles by 30 miles. It's been a great trip in spite of it all. I had a long run along Waikiki Beach today, topped off by a nice swim in a warm Pacific Ocean. And to think I'll be skiing next weekend.

Steve. I hope the sun has come out and that you're getting to see the sights of Hawaii. After bragging about the wonderful weather in Hawaii for so long, my brother must be (should be) embarrassed!

Aloha from Hawaii. I must say that I feel right at home. Especially since today we got more than 6 inches of rain. That's right, about 15% of the annual rainfall in Seattle. Reminds me of sunny Crete last February. C'est la vie. At least it is supposed to clear up and be at least a little nice for the rest of the weekend. I'm at Rex's house right now. I'm happy to report that he seems to be doing great. I hope all is well with all of you...

In answer to Mom's email: I had a great first week at work. The first day it poured down rain like I have seldom seen in 23 years in the Northwest! So hard, it was funny! But despite that, I'm loving every minute of it. There are a variety of tasks, endless learning opportunities, amazing to watch the cycle of life playing out in front of my eyes. The folks are great to work with. And though I come home tired and slightly stiff and sore, I'm managing the physical work load very well. In fact, in a way, I feel more like my old (macho) self than I have in years.

I hope someone will come and visit me there!

I'm back home in Brevard. A cold front moved into Florida before I left and Brevard warmed up, so it is now warmer here than there! I had a good vacation, and as always glad to be home.

Ana, Being bored is not a bad thing. It usually comes just before getting some creative ideas about ways to make life more interesting. So sit and ponder and see if you don't come up with something brilliant!

Right now it is icy rain. I am happy to stay in by the fire. Lots of rain predicted for tomorrow. Let's hope that doesn't mean a wet basement. I just booked Paul's flight to Nice for April 10-24. There's nothing like icy rain to make one start dreaming of the sunny Riviera!

Yes! Thank you, Paula...2 miles, 5 minutes away. :)

Happy almost spring to you, Kim! I'm happy to announce I now have a job: working in a wonderful nursery...2 miles from my home. Should be a huge departure from the big bad world of software engineering, and I'm relishing the prospect of working my everloving butt off in the wind and weather.

And no, I've never tried ice fishing....one day maybe...

Skiing is great with my little feet. However, does anyone go Ice fishing? The ice is perfect this winter with our cold New England temperature. A special extra enjoyment is building a fire on a metal sauce and having it beside you on the ice waiting for the fish to arrive at your trap. Happy Winter to All.

"If you call that burough luxurious so be it,
Just remember that may not be how others see it.
If you really don't want to negotiate,
Then I'd say your job is to procrastinate.

So because a little shadow you see,
Six more weeks of skiing for me!"

"I'm glad I live in this luxurious burrow on the Knob
and not in a dirty, smelly spider hole like a slob.
When I come out I don't want to negotiate;
But to just do my job and prognosticate.

Today because my shadow I see,
six more weeks of winter there will be."

I knew! I've been celebrating Candlemas for several years. My ritual usually includes a bonfire, which in olden times was held for the whole community: the women of a village would let their own home fires burn out, and the communal fire would symbolize the dependence of each on the whole, and the commitment to help each other. As well as to give them a chance to clean out the home hearths!! It's a wonderful time of year.

"When German settlers arrived in the 1700s, they brought a tradition known as Candlemas Day, which has an early origin in the pagan celebration of Imbolc. It came at the mid-point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. Superstition held that if the weather was fair, the second half of Winter would be stormy and cold. For the early Christians in Europe, it was the custom on Candlemas Day for clergy to bless candles and distribute them to the people in the dark of Winter. A lighted candle was placed in each window of the home. The day's weather continued to be important. If the sun came out February 2, halfway between Winter and Spring, it meant six more weeks of wintry weather."

Who knew? This could become my new favorite holiday.

Congratulations, Matt and Cheryl. And great-grandma Patsy. And Paula, for missing the snow (even though your post sounds like 'famous last words'). The weather and everything else here has been delightfully boring lately. No storms or catastrophes. Hey, those sound like famous last words, too.

It's official. Ana and I are going to France from April 7-18. And Jillian is going from April 9-21. Any other takers? Mark and Paula, when will you be in London? It is hard to beleive that this weekend will be February. And Monday will be Bud's day, er, Groundhog's Day. It's a good thing that January and February are fast months.

Here's hoping all are well and weathering the storms...§

The cats are gone so we got our old PC back. So useful! It does not snow here but it's so beautiful to see both the alpes and the mediterannean sea from our village. So the snow is not far. I am happy for Vanessa who is going to have her school classes at the mountain for two weeks. She'll study in the morning and for the first time of our life will ski in the afternoon. She's really looking forward to it.

Jerome will be going for a week vacation to a ski station nearby and I am sure is going to like it (he'll be with his bestfriend).

I thank you all for the nice christmas presents you sent to all of us. and hope next year I'll be able to do the same.

We got pictures of you all over the flat and we talk about all of you so often.

Vanessa's scool mates were really impressed when vanessa showed them her grandmother's book that she is actually reading.

Then, I showed them my mother's books and they are going to meet her best friend who is wife of a french senator! I hope to be able to take them to Paris to see their uncle and cousins this year.

I am sure it's going to be a great year.

Paul, please take care of you, you are travelling so much! But please know that we are looking forward to see you. Ramona: do you travel a little bit?

Vanessa and Jerome are reading in bed before bedtime.

They're growing up so quickly!

Hello, Stylos/Helmar family:

I just have to ask--how can you folks STAND that cold weather? (smile) It's 40 degrees today in Juneau. We have had some cold weather this year and quite a bit of snow, and there's colder weather headed this way. I couldn't believe you were getting zero degree weather last weekend!

How are all of you doing? I've lost most of the Helmar e-mail addresses, so I hope this is a good contact for you as well as the Stylos clan. I've been thinking of the family lately because of the holidays, but once again I didn't get it together to write cards. I hope you all had a good holiday season.

My kids were both home for Christmas. Patrice is living here now. She graduated from college (Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon) last June and came home after that. She had a very tough couple of months during the summer, with the let down from completing college and finally have time to deal with Paul's death. She is doing much better now, but I was really worried about her last summer and fall.

My son Leo is going to college in Portland, Oregon, and called today and said he is really enjoying his classes. Classes were supposed to start last week, but Portland shut down for close to a week because of a winter snow storm. Things are back to normal now.

I am hoping to get back there in July for the Democratic convention. I want to come back for a visit, and will plan one whether or not I get elected as a delegate, but I thought it would be fun to combine the two things. I hope to see many of you then.

Thanks for the web page. I check it out from time to time to see what the east coast family is up to. All my best--Kim

Yes, a hearty congratulations to Tim! He and I (and maybe Dad and Mona) will be going out to a casino in Suquamish to celebrate his coming of age. He's spending the day on the ski slopes, where they let you ski free on your birthday. Thinks are warm and sunny in Seattle today. They are always sunnier and warmer when Dad is in town...§

Wasn't 72 the year that Mark Spitz won all the gold?

It's cold, cold here and they are predicting up to a foot of snow tonight. In true Seattle fashion, they have already begun calling off schools and meetings, even though the flakes haven't begun to fall. At least they are predicting that it will all be melted by the weekend.

It was a very relaxing New Year's weekend here. Except watching the local football team go down in a blaze of glory. §

Happy 2004 to all the readers of this board. If what one is doing when the year changes is a predictor of what one will be doing all year, then I will be sleeping and Paul will be watching a ball game. Why am I not surprised? Sure enough a game is being watched, but I have not yet had a nap and it's almost 4:00 o'clock. The temperature has gone up to 60!! so I'm going for a walk and may not even opt for a nap today. (That can wait for the seasonably cold weather that is sure to return soon.)I wish for us all lots of smiles in 2004.
