Here is what's up. Want to Add a Message?

Christmas cards are coming in much faster than they are going out. I may have to break down and write a "Christmas letter" telling all to all. (All of what?, she asks.) Not much dramatic is happening in our lives. I guess that's good. . .

I would say something mushy here, but I know she knows how great I think (I know) she is! So I'll just throw in some more Happy Birthday Betsy!!!

Home sweet home. Liss and I made it home on the red-eye without any problems. I promptly went home and took a nap, since I didn't get much sleep on the plane. Thanks to all for a wonderful trip to the great northwest, including Steve and Jeff, Mona and Dave and kids, Pat and Ken, Mark F, and the Seattle Seahawks.

Hello Greg: It's good to hear from you. Yes, yours is the lucky number. Watch for your prize which will be delivered by . . reindeer, shortly before the end of the year.
Your Thanksgiving dinner sounds wonderful. I would like to have been there. I'm sure there was wonderful food, and good conversation.
Keep checking in when you feel like it. It's great to hear from the various branches of this family tree. And Hallelujah, we're all getting wonderful June weather, in Massachusetts, Seattle and Brevard!

And Happy Thanksgiving from the North Carolina Mountains. We will be going for 3:00 o'clock dinner with friends. It's nice to only be traveling a mile away. The weather here, however, is sunny and not too cold (yet) but the pictures of the traveling hordes on the highways and in the airports make staying home something to be thankful for.

I'm happy to announce that Melissa arrived safe and sound in Puget Sound. Well, near it anyway. She and Jeff are out at a movie, and when they return they will have the run of the house, as I will be in Minnesota/Chicago for a week. Scott arrives Thursday, with any luck. §

Things are pretty quiet, dark, cool and wet here in Seattle. We are looking forward to the brightness and warmth of Scott and Melissa. Unfortunately, I leave on the day that Melissa gets here (Saturday) and will be gone for a week. It will be here job to keep Lucky and Jeff company. I think Scott, Jeff and Melissa will be having Thanksgiving with the Laynes in Gig Harbor this year. I'll be having Thanksgiving in Chicago, where instead of being cool, dark and wet it will be cold, dark and wet.
All reports from Ana in France are positive. She is planning to finish the year there. She assures me that she is NOT the one causing all the trouble over there.
I hope all is happy and calm out there in Stylosland. §

Yes, a very Happy Birthday to Miranda and Ana! Hard to believe that Miranda is twenty-one! Let's see, I guess we should all take you out for a drink. Seems that a lot of people, other than Steve, have trouble getting through. Jerome and Vaness'a phone are often off, and Ana does not always have hers handy, but we are certainly "in touch"!
We celebrated Ana's Birthday last night, with good dinner and a Black Forest Cake for desert. Ana got enough ear rings to fill all her ear piercings, enough rations to hold her over in the dorm for at least a few days, and enough videos to keep her busy for the vacation (... which is now over ... ).
Today we will see her again, and all together wish the soon to be newly-wed Miranda a wonderful celebration of her own!

Thank you for the birthday wishes! It was a great day. I spent it with the family. First Paula, Melinda and I went to the Museum of Fine Arts and saw a major exhibit of Ansel Adams. We also had lunch in their cafe. Oh, I left out taking Melinda's cats the the vet. But the weather was so nice even that was a pleasure.
Jess joined us later in Acton after her day at another storytelling gathering. They made me a wonderful dinner culminating in a fruit torte "cake." I was glad to be with such interesting, warm people, and to think they were my family...
As for Lesotho. It was great. The country is mountainous (the airport is at 5,000 feet) and looks a little like the high plateau of the American southwest. We went out into the countryside and visited local district health care sites. The people were great, though largely poor subsistence farmers, and the fact that they speak English made it so much easier and immediate. I won't bother you re the consulting part, but it went well and I clearly was able to contribute in a useful way. If we can get some Keollogg Foundation money, I expect that I will be going back.
Best to all the Stylos and related people--I will try to be better re my participation.

Yeah, Mark ... and Mark....What's up with that???? Happy Birthday, anyway, Mr. Mark. Seattle is celebrating your birthday with the clear indication that winter is here to stay. Rain, rain, rain. Big all in one post:
Happy Belated birthday to dear Sophie!!! I echo the good wishes of the rest of the family!
And as always the irony of Halloween haunts me too...((((Jerry))))
And lastly - to continue the circle of life theme - I want to let you all know that my (eldest) baby is now engaged to be married! Of course we are thrilled and shocked and wondering how many of you we will be able to convince to come out and celebrate with us...some time next year - details to be worked out.
And really lastly, my trial version of Office has expired (oy - great timing) so till I figure out what to do about that, I know I'm still receiving email, not sure I can send...but email me anyway in the meantime!
Love to all - as always, especially on this day, I want to let you all know - my brothers and sisters, my parents and children and husband and nieces and nephews and aunts and uncles and cousins - and friends!!! - to let you all know you mean so much to me, and I'm grateful that I have each and everyone.

well it seems like we are not going to get much out of mark but i'll tell you all about the cabin! Mom and dad and i closed it up on thursday, turned off the water, drained the pipes, put the mice to bed. I went through all the boxes (nine of them) that i left there years ago (mostly papers and photographs) to go through in front of the fire. Isn't it nice when your plans finally come true! Now i just have to make photo albums. We all huddled in front of the fire all night because it's getting cold up there. Mom and i slept downstairs on the fold out couch and kept the fire going all night, dad slept in the back room where we heard chicago win the world series (yay white sox!) before we went to bed. Now i'm getting ready to end another visit to lovely brevard, missing the vampire parade by just hours this time. Someday i'll see it, maybe. Hope everyone's well, looking forward to getting back to snowy massachusetts.

I am happy to announce that Athena has arrived from Massachusetts. Her trip was uneventful until we started to Brevard from the airport. Then we had a flat tire! Three cars stopped and contributed toward getting us back on the road. (I won't go into why it took so many people to do it...) Athena is appreciating the friendliness and helpfulness of southern folks.

Quick update: I dropped all my history courses and back to my once upon a time (1987) plan to try and gain admittance to the Computer Science department, so I'm taking java programming class this quarter, will finisht the rest of the prerequisites this year and apply for fall 2006. Plus I start back at Microsoft with the Live Communication Server team, testing software, on Miranda's 21st birthday (just over 2 weeks).
One of the teeth I'm having restored went south this week and I had a root canal on Wednesday.

well since i know that one of the things mom likes is seeing new postings on the web site here is the post birthday post: weather truly beautiful here in northampton, the golds and oranges beating out the reds this year (for a while it looked like the greens were going to hang on all winter). I'm at the library where the computers are fast and the books are many. I've had many good meals at jessamyn's house since she moved to town, i recommend it highly as the new best place in town to eat (company's pretty good too). Hope all is well in stylos-land, i'll be going to northcarolina headquarters next saturday. Wish you were coming!

My Big Day is winding down, but the glow lingers on. . .It was a lovely birthday, starting with the full moon shining through my bedroom window and waking me up. Then there was "fresh-squoze" tangerine juice, email and message board wishes, and lots of phone calls, from all 6 kids and several others besides. Then a BIG bouquet of pink carnations and a picnic in the woods, followed by a chocolate birthday cake at home. And there are birthday cards on the mantle, cards which have been arriving all week. What more could anyone ask? Thank you, thank you, to all of you. Or as we say down here, all y'all.

Friday again! I've had a great week - got my class schedule straightened out, and a request to come back to work with a group I really liked - that may or may not work out, depending on if they can wait until my forced 100 day break is over.
The weather is beautiful, I'm all caught up on homework (if not housework), and all is right with my world. At the moment. :)
Now if those silly Red Sox will just cooperate...

And I am back in Seattle. Ana-less. At least my luggage made it this time. She seems to be well settled into school. It was a great trip to Boston and France, many thanks to all of those who made it possible.
I was actually in NYC when the game started today, but I was too tired to go to it. How often do you end up in the city in September when the Red Sox are playing. Looking at the final score, now I wish I went. But it is nice to get home today instead of tomorrow. §

well i am neither in france nor my ninth decade but i'm checking in to say that i am up here in ashfield at my friend mary's house making free with her computer while she is in new york city and the weather here is crisp and beautiful too. I think this is about the most perfect time of year. Actually i kind of think that about every time of year. But it's so easy to be comfotable (if you're not on the gulf coast right now) and nostalgic in september. Some of the trees are catching their autumnal flames already here in the hills and i for one and glad of the change in seasons.

The deck men FINALLY arrived, so perhaps by next year our party can be away from the bugs and rain, though they did not seem to slow us down too much this year. To all of you Mosers and Helmars who stop by and do not say anything....let us hear from you! Welcome aboard to Louis. Welcome to the family, Jenna Marie. Good to see you here, Jay. I just had a conversation with Al Sharpton in Gautier, MS. They are OK, feeling better, now that they have a generator after 5 days without power. They drove 200 miles to Montgomery, AL to get it (and almost didn't find one). He said they had stayed in their house during Katrina's pass-through, but that he wouldn't do it again. Ann's car got submerged during the downpour. He hasn't seen TV or used his computer since Monday, so he has yet to see the pictures from CNN of the devastation. I'm sure that when he can he will write us all about Katrina and the aftermath.

The weather here has been perfect. I hope it has been cooperating for everyone else as well. As for my plans, Ana and I will be traveling standby to NYC on Friday 8/26. We will leave NYC for France late on 8/30. We are looking forward to Dad's party and can't wait to see everyone...§

I can't believe that no one has been heard from in so many days! Guess I'll remedy that: Paul, Mark and Jerome and I have been at the cabin since Saturday. It started raining as soon as we got there and didn't stop! The plans we had for starting to build a garden shed got shelved. I have a book group later this morning in Brevard so I came back early this morning. My fears of finding water in the basement were groundless. Evidently it hasn't rained as much here. We are looking forward to Vanessa's arrival from camp in Orcas, WA on Thursday.

The girls (Vanessa, Ana and Alia) made it successfully to camp, are probably organizing their teepee on a beautiful Northwest evening as we .... er....write. Vanessa's luggage has been found and is now trying to find Canoe Island, that 47 acre private island in the San Juans. She should have it by tomorrow.
It's very quiet here. Peaceful. Empty. One of those special summer nights that makes you glad to be alive. I hope everyone out there in Stylosville is keeping cool and enduring the heat wave that I have been reading about.
For those who would like to write to the girls, they can be reached at Canoe Island French Camp, PO Box 370, Orcas Island, WA 98280. I'm sure that they will be happy to receive mail. I'm equally sure that they will not answer. So, writing will have to be its own reward. §

The good news is that Vanessa made it. And in good spirits, even if a bit tired. The bad news is that the luggage did not. Hopefully it will be here by tomorrow, but it will be the airline's responsibility to get it to her. Good luck. In any case, it is great to see her and she is looking forward to camp. We'll keep you posted on the saga of the luggage. §

Yes, Mom and Dad are back home, too. Mark and Vanessa are out buying things for camp; Jerome and his Grandfather are watching the Red Sox struggle to keep from getting whupped. The 4 days in Berea and with Aunt Evelyn in Ohio, as she celebrated her 90th birthday, were well worth the trip. So glad Paula and Melinda decided to go back as far as Berea with us.

Sounds like fun, Steve and Ana. San Francisco is a great city. Melinda and I have spent a wonderful (and of course a hot and humid) few days in Berea. Dad showed us around the campus, we had a birthday dinner with Rex, visited many shops and enjoyed an international folk festival. Ah, history. Now to head back east.

Greetings from San Francisco. Ana and I had to come down here to apply for her French visa, so we took a few days to enjoy the summer in the city. Tonight we took a cable car to Fisherman's Wharf and had dinner on the water. What a country!

Here is a message from Chambersburg, PA. Dad, Melinda and I had a restful night sleep here (Melinda and I enjoyed the whirlpool) and will soon head on for North Carolina. Jess should be boarding a plane for the same destination is a few hours, and may well beat us there. Then I expect Mark, Vanessa and Jerome to follow a day or two later. We will let the rest of you in on the fun...watch this space!

And here is a message from the Puget Sound Area. Welcome back to the US, Vanessa. We are looking forward to having you back in Seattle on your way to and from camp. Summer is in full swing here, though it is not as warm as the rest of the country. The house is too quiet now that Mark and Jerome are gone, and it will be even quiter when Ana heads back to France to go to school. Good think I like the peace and quiet.
Ana and I had a very nice trip to Portland to see the fireworks on Monday. It looks like we won't make it to the east coast until Dad's party in Acton, then we will go from there to France. We will miss joining in the festivities in North Carolina this summer. But.....we'll be back.
I hope everyone is enjoying the summer....§

Here's a message from the North Carolina mountains, where everything is quiet and calm for the time being. That may change if the predicted heavy rain moves in tomorrow. And it definitely will change when 2 vehicles arrive this weekend with some of the clan (you know who you are). While I'm not looking forward to the rain and thunderstorms, I am looking forward to having family around. Solitude is good, but enough is enough.

Friday, July 01, 2005 at 12:34:22 (PDT)
And Mark and Jerome are on the road (well, in the air) again, too. Headed to Newark to meet Dad, then who knows where. It was kind of sad to take them to the airport, I've become accustomed to the positive energy that they filled my house with for all of these months. I'm sure whoever is the next to receive them will appreciate that as well. The remodeling project looks great, and the new room will always be full of memories of those who made it happen, including Mark, Jerome, Dad, Tim and Jeff. I still don't know when I'll be heading east, but it looks like the last week in August. After the eightieth birthday party, Ana and I will head to France so she can start HER next adventure. I hope the summer is progressing well for all of you out there in Stylosville. §

He will meet Mark and Jerome in Newark tonight and probably spend Saturday in Noho, before meeting Vanessa's plane in NY on Sunday. From that point, I'm not sure. You'll have to hear it from them. Have a happy and safe Fourth of July weekend, everybody.

What is so rare as a day in June, especially when the sun is shining in rainy Seattle, and one of our "fourfathers' who recently celebrated Fathers Day can now have this first day of summer as his own special day: his 50th BIRTHDAY! Well, I've been tossing around the idea of re-entering school this fall, and I finally emailed my advisor about it, and it looks like it will all fall nicely in to place.
Then I looked at the fees (they've more than tripled since my last attemt), and realize I will have to not only save every penny, but will have to work every day I possibly can till then.
Which means my trip back east will probably be an airplane affair instead of the drive I would so love to do...hopefully we'll be able to round up all significant parties (Miranda, Betsy, Paul and David) to make it as well...

A great time indeed. Jerome did get autographs from Red Sox Matt Clement and Edgar Renteria, as well as Cubs Mark Prior and Mike Remlinger. He did not get Nomah's, but not for lack of effort, as he poked his way through the crowd, following Nomar down the foul line. Both Dad and Jerome also got game balls from the ball man. A first for Dad, after 60 ssome odd years of going to games (Jerome did get one last year at the Asheville Tourists game).
We are overnighting in Blue Earth, Minnesota, and head out in the morning. For those of you that do not know Blue Earth, it is, of course, the home of ... The Jolly Green Giant (Welcome to the Valley!)

Jerome and I are home from Chicago. What an awesome trip! Even if the Red Sox didn't win, Jerome got autographs and baseballs. He had a Cubs hat (from his little league team) and a Red Sox hat (which he got at the game) which he wore depending on whose autograph he was seeking. Everything worked out swimmingly and Dad and Mark are driving back across the country. They are in Minnesota tonight and should be here Tuesday or Wednesday. Truly a weekend for the memory book...§

Cool-o!
I'm sitting at the ferry dock in Edmonds, waiting with the weekend vacationers to get on my boat to go home...using the wireless connection the ferries provides. Listening to the Mariners (who are faring much better than the Sox did today).
Not much news - have to renew my license this weekend - my old one is 6 years old, and, well...it's not all that accurate anymore, what can I say? Also going to see my friend Ken (who made my guitar) perform Sat night, unless I run out of steam before 9:30!
Sure am glad it's the weekend - glad Dad will be out here for Father's Day - the first one I'll get to spend with him in probably 25 years. Wow.
Hope all's well with my lovely family. Would love to hear check ins from Straleys, Mosers, Helmars, Hansons et al! Love,

And a very Happy Birthday to Paulala from Seattle. It actually was in the low 90's for a few days here last week, but the cool clouds have returned. We have been busy finishing the remodeling project and eagerly awaiting summer. Some people think that Memorial Day marks its beginning, but we all know that it Paula's Birthday. It's going to be a great year for you and yours, Paula, I can feel it. Thanks for being you....§

Well! So much for being the first to wish Paula a Happy Birthday! You have to get up pretty early in the morning to get ahead of these granddaughters. (But I DID get up early...)Anyway, Paula, enjoy your day and the Anniversary trip you have planned for this weekend. We will probably be sitting around watching the paint not dry. (Paul got the deck half-way painted before the rains moved in.)Well, our 7 tomato plants will appreciate the rain, anyway.

What's this I hear about a heat wave in Seattle? Here the rain threatens to put a damper on the big White Squirrel festival happening today and tomorrow. So Melinda's off to China! Is this the same little girl who didn't even like to go to a friend's house for a sleep-over? I don't know how to say Bon Voyage in Chinese, but have a great trip, and don't forget to come back.

Mark left early this morning, headed back to the great North West. Melinda is home (asleep) resting up from the grand finale. At final count she has earned her BA (double major of Art and Psychology) with High Honors, Magna Cum Laude, and elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Psi Chi. I also have to thank everyone who put us up, put up with us, fed us, and helped make the celebration truly wonderful.

Whew, busy weekend. Good thing I'm back here at work, so I can rest up. It's official....Melinda is a Smith College graduate! (if she can find that lost library book!) There were lots of proud family and friends on hand for the festivities.....Saturday turned out to be a beautiful day for a cookout...which is what we did...with about 22 of us on Wilson Ave. Sunday AM Melinda and her roomates gave a very elegant brunch, which was followed by the official commencement ceremonies. In the afternoon some of us watched the baseball game which Mark managed to feed from the computer to the television, and then we had a big spaghetti dinner (thanks Dad!) followed by ice cream sundaes (thanks Thene!) followed by paper boat making, painting and sailing down the river by candlelight. Whew. And thank goodness for paper plates. And Hooray for Melinda!

Cool that you posted from the phone store, Ana!
I dropped Mom off at the airport, all checked in, about an hour and a half ago. All's well as far as I know, and I hope she will check in with us shortly after she makes it home. (we commiserated about her required layover in Houston -- I'm kinda mad at Texas these days)
It was so great to have her with us, and I'm so grateful she's willing to make the trip as often as she is. Of course it's never really enough time, but the time we do get, it sure is great! May it ever be thus! Thanks for the fudge, Mom!!

Here I am in Kingston, Washington after a week in Gig Harbor with Pat and Ken during which we talked (a lot) knitted, went to tag sales, played Racko and SkipBo, went to a yoga class and a folk-dance evening. Tonight at Mona and David's we had a great dinner of salmon and all the trimmings this evening. David knows how to cook 'em! It's great being here with the Pingrees and to catch up on the teen-aged grandchildren and to see the giant FRAGRANT rhododendron blossoms in the back yard. Mona is quite a landscape artist. The weather has been good most of the time. I'll be heading home day after tomorrow.

glad mom is having good travels and the stylos-allans are burning last year away (i guess the pond receded from the back yard) Wish i was going to be at that baseball game where maybe some of the curse busting magic will rub off on the cubs. Me i'm going wood shopping for a flooring project (no not in our house, not this year). Rainy and cool and lots of tulips in our yard.

Don't any of you wise guys correct that last message...that part about "their grandfather", I mean. Isn't it frustrating, when you can't correct your mistakes... Aloha! I finished my work about four days early so I am coming home a day and a half early. Hey, it was the only flight I could get. We had a patriotic day today, going to the Mighty Mo, the WWII submarine Bowfin, then to the USS Arizona Memorial. And home in time to see Kentucky lose their NCAA game in double overtime (we only saw the last 10 seconds) and now to get ready to have Easter dinner at the Honolulu Elks Club.
I have a business lunch and a business dinner tomorrow, then I'll be catching a red eye to Seattle.
Have a great stay and visit in NC Paula and Athena. It's bound to be spring when you get back to Mass.

Friday, March 25, 2005 at 05:19:54 (PST)
How about a word or two from Steve, who we know is out there in Hawaii, ostensibly working? And from Mona who has a new job? We're looking forward to having Paula and Athena here for Easter and several days after. Maybe we'll even get the cabin opened for the season. (When we tried that in early April last year, we got caught in a snow storm on the way back to Brevard!) Today the temperature hit 70, and no clouds in sight. We hope to have more of that while the girls are here.

Finally getting a little spring-like here, but still with some patches of snow on the ground.
I had a 28 point hand in cribbage last night.... three fives and a jack in my hand and a five cut, but alas, the wrong jack.
Lucky Paula and Thene....should be a fun trip.
We should have an extended family get-together this summer.

Spring sprung quietly here in Seattle as well. It's been a bit colder than it was in February and early March, but still in the 50's. I'm spoiled. So I am heading to Hawaii for a week or so and hoping that the REAL spring will follow me back. Don't get too excited everyone, this is a work trip. Really. Soon it will be time to think about what we are all doing for the summer. §

And the insight to know when you've gone too far.

Hopefully he will bring some of Seattle's sunny 70 degree weather with him, sounds like they need it over there. We hope you have a very nice time together. well here i am cleaning the house for the big party (what baby indeed, mom!) Ondine is coming this year which is a big treat of course. Of course she's staying with valija due to cat allergies. Another motivation to clean the house. Everything is coming along slow as molasses in february ... at least until a few days ago. But still, it's coming. And our big yard is a beautiful field of snow. And it's almost my birthday so can spring be far behind? Great to hear everyone's news. Mom i think your phone called me by mistake. Maybe it wanted to wish me happy birthday. This year i am making an altar and everyone's picture is going to be on it so i can see you as i write to you. If anyone has a favorite picture of themselves they want to send please do. I should have email soon. Happy day-after-doctor seuss day!

No snow here, although the rain is back after three weeks of bright sunny weather. I think the rain has been vacationing in southern California.
For those who were wondering, there can be no doubt that Jerome is the child of Mark. How do I know this, you ask? My first clue was when he started staying up until 3:00 a.m (on his school vacation) to work on his website. Also, he is very bright and quite a picky eater. And a mechanical curiosity that never stops. It is, of course, a pleasure to have them both around.
Mark will shortly be heading back to France for Vanessa's birthday. And I will be headed to Hawaii for a week on March 23rd. That is about all of the news from Bellevue....§

We had several inches of snow on the ground this morning. The first I've seen here this winter. (I think I missed some by being in Florida in January.) School was called off but the drizzle soon brought things back to normal. Now they're talking about the possibility of more snow tonight. So we can commiserate with you hearty New Englanders who expect March to come in like a lion. Drive carefully, everyone.

Thank you well wishers! We chose to celebrate by staying home and doing chores! But at least we weren't commuting, which seems to dominate most of our lives these days. Yup, it's 23 years and I think a big party is due for 2007 - shall we say, in the Carribean? Hawaii? New Zealand???
Athena, I'll be working at Heronswood this Saturday - first Open of the season...spring really is just around the corner, even though the thermometer may not seem to agree.
Skiing/snowboarding has finally resumed here - just as Paul is going up to Canada (first trip out of the country) with friends for a holiday to Sun Peaks.
And Spring Training has begun (I know you already know this) - let the games begin!

Hi everybody. Not much going on here. Just sitting here at work with a free minute, thought I'd put up a message since it's been a while.
Had a little taste of spring yesterday, warm and sunny....always feels good this time of year....makes it worth the wait, putting up with the long winter.
Happy Anniversary M&D - must be 2 years away from silver.
I have finally gotten around to doing some updating of the family tree...hopefully will be posted online sometime in the near future....thanks Peter for the immigration info on Ahileas....that was a big help. I'm hoping to find the same for his wife (Grandma). Also need info on any babies born in the last 5 years or so (I have Andrea's two and Thea's latest - any others? any Helmar family additions?) We should have a big extended family get together sometime.
Miranda's picture never shows up for me :(
I guess that's because my bookmark opens up directly to the messageboard.

Thursday, February 10, 2005 at 19:30:27 (PST)
This is a tale with a great beginning, a frustrating middle and a hollywood ending. It starts out with Ramona going to Florida, and since spring training had not yet started I did not join her. But she was going to be gone for ten days so I decided Mass. for me. I droped her off at the airport and off I went with the books to be mailed and then off to Mass. I arrived at Peter's late that night had a good nights sleep and was prepared for a post celebration of the Hanson's 50th wedding anniversary. I was to see Mary and give her a birthday present. That was all called off and Lee took Peter and I to a very good restaurant for a very good steak dinner. I determined to send mary the birthday wishes by mail. Later Naki called and suggested mary was not far from Bill and that I might consider driving down there. I took of to Acton and was greeted with enthusiasm having decided that this trip needed a good greek meal. Paula and Mark and I went to the Olympia in Lowell and Mark was very impressed with the food.
The next day I called Bill to see if he wanted to accompany me to see Mary. He agreed, but then came the weather forcast predicting 8 to 10 inches of snow. Paula suggested I take my bags as I might need to stay overnight. I sain no I would come back to see the football game. Then they revised the forcast to up to 3 feet of snow. I had thought of not picking up Bill and just making a quick solo trip.
Well I did stop for Bill and we had no problem finding Halema's place. Halema was not there but we found Mary, wished her a happy birthday and sat and talked for a while. In a little while Helema and a friend from Berea and Alex arrived. After talking a little while, Helema suggested we go to lunch. I did not say I do not eat lunch and for some reason I did not say it is getting late and we should be heading back. Well we went to Mama Leome's and had lunch. Before too long it started to snow. So we finished lunch and we started back to Bill's. It was snowing pretty good but seemed to let up in Fairhaven. As I dropped Bill off, Ginny said Paula called to say I should not continue on to Acton. Ginny was pretty adament that I should stay till the weather quieted down. Thinking that I could easily beat the heavy snow I decided to continue in spite of all the warnings. I did not get far before I turned on to the ramp of route 140. As I was on the curve to access the 140, the car started to slide to the left. I really have bo idea of the exact nature of the following events since they all happened so quickly. But I noticed I was skidding toward the oncoming roadway and there were cars coming. I may have tried to steer away from the traffic and the car spun around to the right a hit a snow bank and smashed the front end. Not to mention all the details but I had considerable trouble with AAA for three days before getting a commercial tow company to tow me to Acton. Ernies Auto Body took the car in and gave me an estimate saying he would locate all used parts to repair the car. So I stayed with Paula and Mark for two weeks, watched several Celtics games, and the super bowl. The Hollywood ending started when I went down to pick up the car. Ernie had done a superb job fixing the car and I dont remember ever seeing the car looking so good. He had located what he call a three quarter nose including a radiator and all the lights. There was only one flaw, but it is not serious and I will not try to describe it. So I bid farewell to those that helped me so much and had a marvelous trip home. The Camry is still the best car I have ever driven. Ctritica

And I was going to call to see if Mark knew about Fanfest, but, Duh! Of course he did. Are we going to Opening Day together?
I got a "stay of execution" from my boss and my contract has been extended for a month. Mixed feelings there, but it's really nice to be wanted.
And I came to learn that one of the guys I work with is the son of Dith Pran, the Cambodian journalist who is the subject of the movie "The Killing Fields"...he's quite a remarkable young man and I have renewed hope that the voices of reason and love and compassion and strength and steadfastness will be heard again.

I'm happy to report that Jerome is doing fine. He had a sleep over last night. He slept at my next door neighbors whom I have lived next to for almost four years but had never met. They have a boy in Jerome's class. He seems to be enjoying school and making plenty of friends. Sophie, I'll have him call you when he gets home if it is not too late. Otherwise, he'll call tomorrow. Paula, how come you are getting phones for everyone but Mark, Mona and Me?
Later on today we will go to Safeco field where Mark can pick up some autographs (obstensively for Jerome) at the baseball team's fan festival.

NOW will everybody agree that it makes sense to move the whole family to North Carolina or some other place with a reasonable climate? I'm glad that all of you are safe, for the time being, and I hope that's the end of the slip-sliding and crash-banging. I won't even mention what the weather is here (Florida), but I do wish you were all here to enjoy it. O wind, if winter comes. . .

Okay, since you asked...I did go to work today, as did Jess. Her work started at 8:00 in Vermont, mine 7:30 in Fitchburg, so she left an hour before me. She had remained an extra day because of the storm (good thinking, avoid the dangerous roads). This morning we got up early, she packed up her instruments and cat, and headed North. As I was driving to work, and she to Vermont, she called to tell me to look at the beautiful full moon and the red sunrise. Ah, nature. Then I heard "oh my goodness!" (no profanity there, really!) and MAMA! (okay, she loves me) then the phone went dead. Now I start to worry. Minutes (that felt like hours) passed before I reached her. She had hit a patch of ice and side-swiped a truck (sound familiar?).... driven by a cop. The happy ending I suppose is that she is fine and I have recovered from my heart attack. Will this winter never end?

One with a happy ending, I hope! Can I assume govt. offices in Massachusetts are still closed today Paula? From what I see on the news it looks like it would be near impossible to get around. Stay warm!!

And I am back in Washington from the other Washington. We didn't get nearly as much snow as expected in D.C. so I made it back without a hitch. Back to 60 degrees and overcast. A very worthwhile trip to the coronation, I'm glad I went. But then again, it is always nice to get home. I hope you are all taking care in the snow, wind and cold. And.......go Patriots. §

Dad is in Fairhaven with Ginny and Bill. I will let him tell that story. Jess and I just finished shoveling 30+ inches of snow from the driveway. (Poor Mark had to watch from the window.) Now to a cup of tea and the fireplace. The Governor called a state of emergency in Massachusetts..now if that will just hold until tomorrow I could have a snow day! Something good could come from all of this. Okay, I will admit, it is awfully pretty.

13 inches on the ground here in Northampton. Now it's sunny and the wind died down....good for digging out.
I'll bet there's a lot more snow there in Acton.
Wish we were worthy of hearing about the knee adventure.
Wish I knew where my Dad is.

Wet and warm and wet and warm.
I remember '78. For some reason I decided to walk from my dormroom at UMass to North Amherst (where Pinocchio's Pizza was) and back...it was cool. heh heh.
Jess - check your email.

My Mama would have written first but she is busy making COFFEE for her poor immobilized husband. She says "No greater love hath a wife." I left Vermont to come home for the weekend. Right now Vermont is partly sunny expecting a total of one foot of snow. Here in Acton they are comparing the Blizzard to '78 and are expecting up to 38 inches. How's the weather out there???

>I'll be staying at a hotel right next to the airport tonight
...sounds familiar - must be deja vu for you!!
The Inaugural Address I wish I'd heard!
Safe travels, Steve.
I've got band practice tonight for the first time in a while! Yay! My last day at this current contract is next Friday - mixed Yay! And then I'll be back on the hunt (again, again, again!), and I'll be studying some new technology I hope will help me advance to the next level.
Boy do I love Spring - it feels like it's just around the corner here. The kids are bummed because the ski areas are closed - just big puddles in the mountains. But my hellebores are happy, and I guess that's what counts.
Hey Steve - maybe you can hire me for some spring garden cleanup work while I'm available!

Well, yes, I was in the funeral procession. But you would have recognized my black beret. There were many more people than the press reported, but not as many who came in 1970. I was impressed by the diversity of the crowd, though it was generally the 20 somethings or the 60-70 somethings. It is refreshing to know that there are so many who are not in favor of our attempts to impose the will of the Christian right on the rest of the world.
Now they are predicting lots of snow. I'll be staying at a hotel right next to the airport tonight, so hopefully I'll get out tomorrow. If not, another day of sight-seeing in the Capital. I hope all in the northeast are weathering the storm. See you soon in Seattle....
Steve
Saturday, January 22, 2005 at 06:44:15 (PST)
Well, I'm not sure if it was Steve's, but I sure saw a few backs lining the Funeral Procession. I guess he did not get taken guest, as I was standing by for his one phone call. I say: Go Bush Go - Keep going, and don't come back!
You should have been here, Athena: Having just run over 750 feet (not to be confused with feat) of wiring, I've re-wired quite a bit of Steve'a house. I could have given you some pointers!
Jerome Does seem to be enjoying his new school and situation, he already has friends, and is going to his first birthday party tomorrow.
That's all from here, where it has been a reaching the 60s in the day time. Not quite the Riviera, but it does keep the toes warm. We'll keep a watch out in case Dad shows up here next!

i was just reading back over the last few weeks of the message board (yes it was my first time on the internet in oh-five)(call me a semi-luddite) and i love how mom jumpstarted the news with a threat (actually mom, i WAS meaning to write you a real letter. are you in florida?) and i am so happy to hear the news of jerome enjoying seattle (also one of my favorite cities) and the betsy and paul story was charming. or should i say paul and betsy. my story is that we got jumpstarted on working on our house, i think we realized how unfinished we were when we had houseguests in december ... and so i've been very busy everyday trying to finish up the wiring and amy has been building a closet so she can organise her clothes -- no small feet -- and i've been trying to start some storage systems aka bookshelves in the "library" as well as helping my friend becky loveland who is doing a january remodeling; toes are cold since the weather turned. I bought a new jigsaw yesterday (i'd been using the same antique one since i was a teenager) to help facilitate cutting holes for the outlet boxes in the old plaster walls, nothing like a perfect little new power tool to bring excitement into a zero degree january day. There. How's that for newsy.

Peter's? Are you confused, Dad? You are supposed to be in North Carolina! Myself, I am on my way to DC to protest the coronation tomorrow. Just like the old days, except for the first class plane tickets and hotels. I'll be back Sunday, in time for football. See you all then....§

Yeah, Chuck, whazzup? Still planning cities?
Mark, Jeromeo, Ana and I had a very nice dinner with the entire Pingree family. And got to see the Patriots-Colts rematch. All that and preceded by a nice visit with Patsy and Ken. Everything couldn't have been more perfect. The kids have a day off tomorrow, but the grownups have to work. So, it's off to bed with me....§

Kind of an interesting weekend for us here in Kingston: on Friday night Paul played his first official gig. It was at a coffee house up in Port Townsend, and Betsy went to watch (no grown ups allowed!). Then she drove back home - from the Olympic Peninsula, in the dark in the SNOW!!! Quite thrilling, by all accounts. Anyway, they were both quite giddy when they finally made their way home.
Saturday brought the opening of snowboard season, and therefore was followed by sore muscles and tired teenagers on Sunday!
I've been given 3 more weeks on my contract, and am grateful for a little extra income before I hit the streets looking for work again.
I hope you all have a great weekend, and I hope I have the chance to drop a line before the next one! Love,
mona

Mark and young Jerome are on their way to Seattle. A friend of Jerome (11 years old) woke up at 4:30 am to come along with us to Nice Airport! Jerome is happy to go to the US with his papa and to be with his dear family. I trust you will take good care of him.
not easy for Vaness and I.
Thank you Steven
Steven, I will send a mail as soon as I feel better.
Happy New Year to everyone

As we await the arrival of Mark and Jeromeo tomorrow, we also await the arrival of our first winter storm. It has been clear and cold for days, but they are predicting warm moisture arriving from the tropics and mixing with the cold arctic air to form SNOW. If it materializes, it will be one of the first experiences young Jerome has with snow in the city.
Otherwise, things have been all quiet on the homefront. Just the way we like them...§

Hey Mom and Dad, 63 degrees and clear in Brevard. Don't rub it in. Yet another snowstorm here, and me, the only shoveler in residence. Have I mentioned that I hate winter? Now you see why I haven't written....who wants to hear (read) complaining?
