Well there's nothing like True Love. Just ask the Princess Bride! which I just watched on TV and remembered reading it for the first time with Paula up in Marlboro - it was just plain old laugh out loud funny!!

Yesterday was a lovely day, full of surprises, planned and otherwise: Paul got a cell phone he was sure he wasn't getting, but when it started ringing while he was opening it (thanks, David!), he had this priceless look of hope and disbelief on his face!! And for my part, my long nurtured but ever barren Christmas Camelia put forth a half dozen tender white blossoms...

We had a lovely dinner (imo) with all of my kids and Steve and Ana too! Thanks for making the trip to the Other Side and braving the ferry crowds.

Tonight the fancy dishes and linens are put away and we're all occupied with our new toys (and movies and books...). I'm about to crawl back into bed, but wanted to give a last shout out to Christmas, which was so happy and satisfying for me this year.

Now let the sun return!!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!!!!

Vanessa
Sunday, December 26, 2004 at 06:38:42 (PST)
Me too! Monday as I was sitting in the hospital waiting room I was going through things I had to do: laundry, go to the dump, take down the tree...then I realized that it only felt like Christmas was over! You all were my early Christmas. And Steve, could you send that extra lobster to me? I think that will be my new Christmas tradition. Right now Athena, Amy and Melinda are still sleeping! Mark is hobbling in the shower and Jess and I are sitting here waiting for the festivities. Merry Christmas to you all!
Paula
Saturday, December 25, 2004 at 06:20:58 (PST)
And Merry Christmas to you. And you. And you. And you, you, you and you. And yours. You get the idea. I just finished a nice lobster dinner that Joanne had sent from Boston. Four lobsters for three people. I'll be having an omelette by the time that most of you are reading this. And off to Mona's for dinner tomorrow. I feel like this should be New Years, since Christmas was last weekend. §

Also in sick-bay: Paul (aka Buddy). We're assuming it's not the flu, since we both had flu shots. Same symptoms though. He's been asleep now for 6 hours (it's now 4:00 PM.) Think I should wake him up? It must be the powerful medicine the doctor prescribed. Everybody else OK?

Thursday, December 23, 2004 at 14:07:50 (PST)
Well, I'm at home with a cold...started coughing on the airplane on Monday (I'm sure my neighbors loved that!), now I'm down for the count. Luckily for me, Betsy and Paul have taken over the Christmas preparations and I'm just lounging today. I think I've never known such luxury!!

But I've been also thinking about how much I enjoyed the time I got to spend with my fabulous nieces!!! You guys are so great...

Mark A: I'm glad the scary part is over, and I'm glad that Melinda is there to fetch things for you. But how will you get upstairs to your computer? I hope that things will go swimmingly (smooth sailing? pick your metaphor) for you from here on out.

To complete the wrap up, or the round up, or the head count: Jess is safely back to Vermont today, and I just brought Mark home from the hospital. Our trip to the hospital was in the snowstorm at 4:30 am. Not too much traffic on the road, so that was fun. His surgery went smoothly, and he is enjoying his narcotics very much. He doesn't remember much of yesterday, but I have stories to tell! The tumor turned out to be a ganglion (sp?) cyst in the bone, which they replaced with a bone graft. The cyst is being biopsied, and is expected to be benign. The other uncertainties are whether or not the graft will "take", and whether this will cure the pain. So far so good though. By the way...I had a great time Sunday and am greatful to all of you who made it happen (and you know who you are). What an amazing family I have. I wouldn't change a one of you.

And now you have heard that I am safely in France!
Mark
Tuesday, December 21, 2004 at 06:43:17 (PST)
And we have arrived back in North Carolina, which, though not as cold as Massachusetts, is not exactly warm! We had an easy trip, thank you Athena for the ride to Bradley and to Scott for the use of the car...and to everyone else who made a rather impromptu family reunion possible. It was a memorable weekend, and with all the photos that were taken, we couldn't forget it if we wanted to!
I hear (indirectly) that the news from Mark Allen is good, so now, as soon as we hear that Mark (Stylos) has landed safely in France, we can relax and prepare (or wait) for Christmas--though it feels to me like we have already done Christmas! Ho ho ho and love to all.

Yes, home indeed. Well, if 'home' can be considered sitting at my desk. It was a great weekend alright. One for the ages. And the aged. Thank you for your birthday greetings Jeromeo. They are welcome whenever they come. Your papa should be there when you get home from school tomorrow. Oh yeah, you are not in school since it's almost Christmas. Well he should be there shortly after you wake up.

People have been walking into my office and looking at the line-dance photo that Mark took. People have been asking if it was taken by a professional. Speaking of Mark, we all hope your surgery went fine and you are well on your way to recovery. We sure appreciate all that you and Paula do for us....

Thanks again everyone, for being my family....§

Thanks everybody for the best birthday ever! A very happy and special day spent with family and friends. Who could ask for anything more.

So, how does it feel to be fifty? Um, fine, I guess. I haven't really been thinking about the getting older part....just enjoying the good things in life...of which I have many. Like all of you and days like yesterday.

And now Melissa has the snow she has been waiting for. I don't know if she got the school cancellation for her math final exam that would make her especially happy. But at least she can start doing some real skiing.

Thanks for the birthday wishes Jeromeo. Hello to you and your sister and your mother.

I hope all the travellers make it home safe and sound.

For those keeping track:

Mom and Dad arrived last evening. Yay!

Steve, Mark and Mona arrived in the wee hours...I saw Steve sleeping on the air mattress in my living room this morning....I know mark is around because the the whole milk and the mint milanos were opened....and I assume Mona went over to Athena's because there is no rental car in my driveway.

It's almost time to....get this party started!

Ramona

Er, ah....yup. Miranda went and got herself a new car last year and stuck me with the Cavalier. And voila! Along comes a new driver. ..thus Betsy is the proud owner of one pimped out Chevy.

I figure Paul will end up with the Focus by the time his turn comes, and I'll have to get me my very own real new car - maybe something I really want. Like a Westphalia.

I'm off to work right now, but I hope she'll check in here when she gets home from school - I will tell you all, she is one beautiful, wonderful young lady - inside and out!

Yes, indeed, a very happy birthday to Jillian who is probably working hard on her birthday, as she is in retail, and this is retail's biggest day. And probably studying, too. We're all proud of you, Jillian.

Ana and I have had a very nice week in downtown Chicago. We leave tomorrow for Seattle. We have been shopping (and even bought a skateboard) and to the opera and watched (part of) the State Street parade. We got to enjoy the midwest's first snowstorm of the season, and have generally been pampered.

We hope everyone else's Thanksgiving was as happy as ours...

Wow, Vanessa....from the big screen to the little screen. I knew you were born to be a star the first day that I met you. When you were like one and a half! Ana just bought a four-wheeler. A skateboard that is. And tomorrow, she goes to her first opera. Aida.

We are having a fun time in Chicago. Staying in a downtown hotel and doing lots of walking around. So far the weather has cooperated, but snow and rain are threatened for the next few days.

I hope everyone has a very nice Thanksgiving.

What did we do on Sunday, you ask? Nothing that we did sounds near as much fun as your driving all over Massachusetts and Vermont, Paula, to be with kids and other relatives, so I won't relate it. The weather here was misty and rainy and we finished up the weekend with a fire in the fireplace and a disastrous (for me) game of casino. That was followed by one of us watching "Mrs. Doubtfire" and one of us watching a football game. And so to bed. . .

It was a lovely Sunday morning party for Joey yesterday. Good food (as usual), exciting surroundings, and fabulous company. Then Melinda and I headed to Vermont to hear Jess and the Brattleboro Women's chorus in a wonderful concert. After a quick (but delicious) supper in Brattleboro, Melinda and I drove back to Northampton, then I dropped her off and came home again, home again Jiggety Jog. What did YOU do yesterday?

speaking of belateder, i have yet to chip in my happies birthday to sophie, ana, miranda, lucky, mark and joey not necessarily in that order ... boy we have a cool set of scorpios ... also i loved mark's retrospective of heartache finally set right, i completely agree with the "what else impossible can we do now" sentiment ... all around new england i think people have a new gleam in their eye, and identities are shifting .... and we are having a party for joey on sunday (and the the red sox) anyone who likes joey and potatoes (and who knows where i live)can come
eleven in the morning and wandering into the afternoon ... as for junior's "re"election, well, i've decided to take it as personal mandate to have the best, most productive, radiant and deliciously outrageous four years of my life. care to join me?

Let's see...Albert Camus, Madame Curie, Billy Graham, Joni Mitchell, Leon Trotsky and Al Hirt!

Miranda is sleeping in this morning, and we will be taking her out for dinner in Keyport. She's been celebrating all week and reports she's had lots of gifts and partying and general revelry!

Happy birthday to you, ((((Miss Ana)))) ! sending you lots of love and hugs, and I'll save the spankings for the next time I see you! I know your dad is so proud of you, and so am I! I hope you have a great year, as you so richly deserve.

And of course happy birthday to the Lucky cat, too!

Hard to believe I've been a mom for 20 years. It's been the hardest, greatest thing that's ever happened to me, and if I think about it too much I'll break down and cry. I know you don't read here much, Miranda, but I love to shout to the world how glad I am you're in my life, in this world. Your smiling face on my wall at work gives me a lift every day. And the memories of that little baby so many years ago....nope, gonna stop now before I lose it.

But do SOMETHING to mark the occasion. Above all, don't sit in front of the computer all day. Many happy returns!

Happy Birthday, Joey!!!

I hope you enjoyed voting for the first time. Ugh. When I was your age, we still had Nixon to kick around. I wish the country could have celebrated your Birthday in a much happier vein, but hopefully, yours will be as happy and peaceful as it could be. We're all proud of you, Joe. §

What happened? I wasn't through with what I had to say. That keeps happening! I guess there are some keys you aren't supposed to hit when you're writing a message for the board, casue if you do it goes ahead and posts it. Now what was it I was going to say? I think Paula stole my words. Before I thought of them. So live it up today, and if anybody calls you on it, just say "My grandma told me to do it". So go and enjoy the last of your teen-age years, and come see us someday!

Sorry to have missed my chance to say Happy Birthday, Sophie!!! I, too, am glad you had the chance to have fun!

You know, I'd trade in the Red Sox win for the chance to avoid the trouble and pain I think 4 more years of George Junior will bring this world.

May we all stay safe and have the chance real soon to be together. ((((Family)))))

Well, I woke up this afternoon, and was still true. We had a wonderful evening at Mona and Dave's with barbequed steak, Saint Pauli Girls, howling at the moon, and pointing fingers. The ride home with Steve was so much more pleasant than the ride home on Mom's birthday 11 days earlier. Thinking and talking about our past and our kin: all those games Dad took us to in the '50s and '60s, going to opening day with Scott in '68, even if our hearts had been broken just months earlier, watching Yaz get hit 3000 after a couple of games standing room only with Dad, and having George Scott come in and congratulate him in, gulp, a Yankee's uniform, watching in '86 in the wee hours of the morning on AFN from Napolean's Waterloo, listning alone on the Internet to the last game of the 2003 season. I'm happy for Dad after waiting for so long, for us after waiting what seems even longer, and for Jerome who did not have to feel what I felt that October when I was almost exactly his age. Now I'm going through withdrawl, and already I can't ... WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR!

We got the Pat's, we got the Sox, and since Manny is only a naturaulized American, and can't even win as a write in: Go John Go!

Yeah, how often do we get to enjoy a moment like that? Once in a copper moon, as Anne said last night. We had lots of family and friends and pizza on Wilson Ave last night, to share in the festivities. And Cameron got to stay up 4 hours past his usual bedtime! It wasn't quite the 7 game nailbiter that we've been through before, but it sure felt like it was meant to be. Some of us walked around town afterward....lots of beeping cars and pumping fists and drunken cheers....and the moon coming slowly back to life as the magic moment slipped into history and we slipped into our beds. Ahhhh.

It's vacation time here for the kids. Jérôme is doing well with his first brand new monocycle! and since his dad left, he does like him: watching the score of the Red Sox all day and all evening long which can be long in this part of the world! (should go to bed earlier, little one) keeping up great with his English unlike his mom whose kids won't let her speak a word of English!
Vanessa scored a goal, so proud of her! They both go to a different soccer club now!
I haven't left this village for four years so here we go Marseille (for the week-end,) a real city!
Allez les Red Sox...
Love to all of you

Wow - a die hard Yankee fan! Okay, maybe a felt just a wee little bid sad seeing all of their sad faces.

On a more somber note, it is hard to believe that it has been 35 years (almost to the minute) since Jerry was hit by that car. Life sure has changed for all of us since then, hasn't it? We're all still thinking of you and missing and loving you, bro'. §

i'm a die hard yankee fan who has hated the red sox with a hate as only love and a red sox fan can understand. we have been bitter rivals for almost a century and it saddens me that i can no longer taunt the nation with "1918". i never imagined in my wildest dreams that i would utter these words but go red sox, you've eared it. the nation has always supported the teams & i as a yankee fan have always respected that. i really hope you guys win it all. you've suffered long enough. i'm sure the babe would agree.

Well, the way I heard it ...

A Bostonian dies and goes to Hell. Lucifer figures to have some fun with him, and turns the heat up to 100. The Bostonian says: “That’s nothing. Just like an afternoon at the ballpark in June.” Lucifer decided to turn it up to 120. The Bostonian says: “That’s nothing. Just like a day on the Cape in July.” Lucifer decided to turn it up to 140. The Bostonian says: “That’s nothing. Just like a ride home in the subway in August.” Finally Lucifer decides to go the other way, and turns everything down to minus 100. All of the sudden the Bostonian starts jumping for joy and screaming … “The Sox won The Series! The Sox won The Series!”

This whole election process reminds me of a football game between two grudge universities. The cheering goes as follows.
From the macho side cheers of "hit him again harder, harder. hit him again HARDER, HARDER" While from the intellectual side come pleas of "Reason with him Harry, reason with him". It should be obvious which side is which

Yes, it is hard to believe that Jerry would be 54. But let's not forget, that Jerry and Mickey Mantle shared a birthday. That made him somewhat of a Yankee fan. If you are up there hoping for a Yankee win, Jerry, it's a wish that I hope doesn't come true. But....may all of your other wishes come true...and yes, we still miss you.

Now is a good time to visit the Jerry Memorial section of this site....§

Thank you, thank you, to all my well-wishers. It was a very good birthday (especially since it didn't depend on the Red Sox holding their own against the Yankees). I spent the morning filling bags of books ($3/bag) at the library used-book sale, then my good friend Jill treated me to a sumptious lunch. Paul presented me with gorgeous roses and champagne before we started on our chase to find flu shots. We had heard that they might be available first here, then there. We were too late at a drive-through clinic at a Baptist Church 20 miles away, but they directed us to another place on the other side of Asheville and there we were successful. After enjoying several phone calls and email messages and postings (from Washington, Massachusetts, France and Mississippi) we had Chinese food and Champagne (not a bad combination) and I settled down in front of a crackling fire with a good book and Paul retired to the TV to suffer through the not-even-close ball-game. So that was our day. We had decided not to go to the cabin, though Becky and David were there for their final visit of the summer. Too much going on here. We will go over later in the week and drain the pipes and close things up for the winter. It's hard to believe the summer is gone already. . .

A quiet day in conn. Peter slept a lot, read a lot and healed somewhat. Several neighbors called to see if all is well, and it is.The only problem is eating and the egg lemon soup that Ginny brought (or maybe it was Naki, I am not sure) seems to have helped. when I got here Peter was sitting where I usualy sleep with a wash cloth on his head, the tv was on and a greek newspaper in his hands. I quess that means everything was ok, but that was not quite so. I asked him if he had any pain to which he replied it hurt like hell. I could see the side of his face was bandaged over the stitches so I asked him if they went through his groin and send the angio plasty up to the carotid artery like he thought they would. No he said, they spent hours scraping and removing the plack. Naki and Lee just returned from the pharmacy with his perscriptions and made sure he understands how to use them. While I was typing this there was a knock on the door it was Loretta peter' next door neighbor enquiring about his healt. She also assured me if we needed anything we should knock on her door. I said my two sons were coming the next day and I thought we would be allright and I thanked her for her concern. Things seem to be ok now and I will update this later. Panos

Had a nice impromptu Sunday dinner yesterday with Dad, Paula, Mark, Melinda, Athena, Amy and Melissa yesterday. And got to see Melinda'a new apartment at Smith college...very nice.

For those who might not have heard...Joey walked the long trail...from his back door in Worthington to the Canadian border, sleeping in trail shelters along the way. Took about a month, finished last week. Sounds like he had a very nice time.

Melissa is working hard in her classes at Greenfield Community College, and on the running team at Gateway high school. Big race this Tuesday. Go Liss!

Uneventful? Yeah, I guess. If you call a volcanic eruption uneventful. :)

Paul had a great time at the game too, even if he was just rubbing elbows with the common folk.

And I'm luxuriating in 2 whole days off!! It is a beautiful fall day here. The deck is clamoring for another coat of stain before the wet weather sets in. Happy Birthday, Jerome! I hope you are enjoying your first day in the double digits! You will never again be able to write your age with one digit. Here's wishing you a long and happy life. I don't think I will be around on the day that you need 3 digits to write your age. How about those Red Sox, eh? I hope you are enjoying your presents. This year I got to see a few of them before you did.

And a happy day to Vanessa and Sophie, too. I hope you all enjoy the celebration of Jerome...§

Well, I dropped Mark off at the airport, and by now he should be winging his way back to France to see the family and to celebrate Jerome's birthday. Always sad to see him go, but at least we know that he will be back before long.

Have a great birthday, Jerome....and a great celebration everyone...§

Being back at work in Redmond is so strange, I can't even begin to describe it here....but it's all part of the greater scheme and so I'm just going with the flow and doing my best.

Loved the adventure tales, Al! Glad no one's hurt or anything...love you all,

Paula
Friday, September 17, 2004 at 16:02:11 (PDT)
Hello to all our Stylos friends...

We have survived in excellent shape, another one of God's most awesome creations. Hurricane Ivan has come and gone and it seems as if it were just a mirage....It was here and gone in such a short time. We had spent several days more or less prepping for it....ie picking up loose stuff around the yards, moving our lawn and some of our patio stuff to outdoor sheds where I keep the riding lawnmower and other tools that are used less and less because of old age and creeping laziness;)) Luckily I had the help of my strapping 6'6" grandson Dusty to do the heavy lifting and moving. My other grandson who was home from Univ. of Florida also lent a hand in several jobs....all of this took parts of a couple of days, then with $80 bucks for four sheets of plywood, Ann and I boarded up the fouor long picture windows on the south side of our home....then at around noon on Wednesday, we drove the 35 miles mostly north to our son's home north of Pascagoula.....and about 20 miles west of Mobile, AL.

At around 6 pm, it started raining, so we just snacked, ate, and chatted and watched Fox News and The Weather Channel display in big screen color the oncoming onslought.....We picked and disected all of it as we could finalize the spot upon which the eye of the storm would first hit land. That is a very important piece of info, because if you know thata, you know, in essence, just how the final outcome of the storm is gonna impact you. Well it came ashore in Gulf Shores/Orange Beach, Alabama....about 51 miles east from our home in Gautier, Mississippi. For us, that meant that we were kinda, semi safe because 95% of the devastation was gonna be on land that was in the northeast quadrant of the storm...out to 200 miles. For a catagory 3 storm, that meant we would get at the max, only catagory 1 winds at the most......had it hit 20 miles farther west towards us, we would have really been in for a devastating outcome........

As it was, we were blessed with only twigs, leaves and a couple of larger branches in our yards, and the loss of electricity of only one day....yesterday, the day of the storm....We are accustomed to 4 or 5 days without electricity ....and lemme tell you, try living in a hot humid damp area for that long with no ice, no breath of fresh air, and no hot food. Anyway, we are Thankful to God for again, taking care of my wonderful family, and Ramona, thank you so much for your kind letter.

From Ann and I.........y'all have a great day.

Remember the lake that used to occesionally form in our back yard? Now it's an ocean! (The lake is in the basement.)We're sweeping it out, even though the rain is expected to continue for some time. We had hard winds last night but no trees fell. Just small limbs. It's another no-school day for the kids. Landslides caused the Blue Ridge Parkway to crumble in 4 places, one of them between rte. 80 and Mt. Mitchell. Authorities say it may be closed for a year!

We're fine, haven't lost electricity, just the cable. This too shall pass (and soon, I hope).

Good question: "Where's Mark?" the kids are asking.
I've been elected General Secretary of the parents'association at Vanessa's school. She's a real teenager now and she adjusted so quickly to her brand new way of life. So weird to see her with 15 year old kids. Wait till you see her Mark!
Hope everyone is fine. Sending you lots of sunshine from the riviera.

It's always a pleasure to have you, Dad. And the place is always a bit empty after you leave. So you hurry back, y'hear? We're glad you made it back to the hurricane's path before it got there. Remember to button down those hatches....§

Steve? Steve! What about Mark? Who brought you out here? Who took you back to the airport? Who was at all four of the Sox games?

But, yes, we are all indebted to Steve for making it possible. Just let's remember to tell him next time we want to go to Red Sox WINS, not just Red Sox games!

It was great having you out here, Panos. We hadn't seen back to back games since Yaz got hit #3000, against the Yankees. Reggie Jackson brought him in the ball, and George Scott, wearing a Yankee #5, came out and gave him a hug.

See you in Boston in late October ...

The game I went to I would (honestly) guess it was about 30% Red Sox fans. Even the Seattle transplants were rooting for the Sox, I'd say.

It was great to have so many of my relations at the dinner table tonight. I was a bit late getting going (so what else is new?) and we're just chowing down on the Apple Crisp right now....life is good.

Ramona
Sunday, September 12, 2004 at 14:58:21 (PDT)
You will have to ask Dad and Mark about the Red Sox. They are at the game now. That is four in a row for them. Ana and I, on the other hand, are having a nice quiet cloudy Sunday at home. Doing the laundry, cleaning the house and doing homework. It's been a very nice visit with Dad, who will be headed out to Mona's for dinner tonight. I have a nice picture of Steve, Ana, Dad, Mark, Mona, Tim, Paul and Besty at the baseball game on Thursday. Maybe I'll share it sometime. Hope everyone is having a very nice end of the summer/beginning of Fall. §

Water, what water? The sun is shining brightly today. I choose to believe that the prediction of another hurricane is just rumor. Brevard Schools have already had two "snow days". Most roadways are now open. Asheville is still suffering from a broken down water processing system, or something.

I am thinking of what we all, and especially the Hansons, were going through this time 3 years ago. I guess we might all do as Christine liked to do: hold hands and sing about love and happy families.

Four days without a new message. I must do something about that!

Well, the Seattle kids (Betsy, Paul and Ana) start a new school year tomorrow. Best wishes for their "re-entry" as they say in Europe.

We have been alone for the last week, after 6 weeks of company. Empty nest all over again. But Mark is on his way down from Massachusetts in the camper-bus, and if he hurries he will get here before the fringes of the well-publicized hurricane gives us some rain. Oops, too late; I see that the rain has started. We took advantage of yesterday's perfect weather to get in a walk in the woods.

Thanks, Scott for the photo of Athena and Amy's house. It looks great.

Oh yes, I forgot to acknowlege the college kids among us who will be starting on this academic venture (Melissa and Jillian) and those who are in the middle or last part of it: Melinda, Jeffrey and Pam. So what can I tell them, but Show up (every day), Pay attention and Persevere. You'll be glad you did.

Yes, indeed, we arrived okay. In fact, it turned out to be a very good day. While sitting on the tarmack in Charlotte, waiting for a gate to open up, I received a phone call informing me that we won the trial which took up the first part of the summer. Then we were bumped up to first class for the remainder of the trip at no extra charge (it pays to ask). Then we landed to perfect weather in Seattle, 72 degrees and 100 mile visibility. The sun was setting and the full moon rising. Life is good. Everything was so perfect that I hardly noticed that my golf clubs ended up in Pittsburgh. Hardly noticed? Who am I kidding, I expected it. It's a good thing I'm not coming to Seattle for a golf tournament. I'm assured that they will be here by noon tomorrow.

Thanks Mom and Dad for a great relaxing visit. I hope we see you before too long....§

The last message posted itself before I was finished. Why? Maybe I hit the enter button or something...Anyway, we enjoyed showing Steve and Ana the quiet (slow? boring?) pastimes of little old Brevard and we did have the fun of Paul's birthday at Twin Dragons (complete with a balloon and about 8 Chinese servers singing), and a scrabble tournament (?) afterwards. So land safely, Steve and Ana, and Mark, the latch-string is out.

He played baseball "like steven used to" so he said (with a tennis ball onto the house's walls) while Vanessa was snoring! She had fantastic vacations, and she'd rather like Berkeley than Standford! as she told me. Got to find a good job soon! Thank you to all of you you're such a great family. How was your play Melissa? We are here. Alive and well. Enjoying the peacefulness in Brevard. We spent the day at the Biltmore Estate. Very relaxing and interesting. Well, for Steve anyway. Ana was just a wee bit bored, though she would never admit it. We have lots of activities planned for the nezt four days, and we will head back west on Monday. This is the first time we have had Mom and Dad to ourselves in NC. It is different, but nice. We recommend it. We have had word from Mark that the hard part of his journey is over and that it should be smooth sailing from here. Look for Mark at least in Boston early next week. That is of course, unless you are looking for him in NYC this weekend.

Hey, Dad! For your birthday I'm trying to arrange for the Little Boston kids to win the World Series! The North Kitsap 14 years old babe ruth team is playing in Wilson, North Carolina this week - with the final game on Saturday! It has quite a few of the kids Paul played with, but couldn't join, because of being born on the cutoff day...

Anyway, it's been raining like crazy here (oddly enough), and I'm getting around to sorting through old paperwork and stuff...such fun!

Steve, I picked up the things from Dancing Brush, and will find a way to get them to you when you get home. Hope you're having fun!!

Second try's a charm. After a trip from Charlotte to Asheville, a bit of circling, and a return to Charlotte, USAir decided to deliver Ana and Steve to Asheville early this afternoon. Thanks for the info Naki. The family tree needs a lot of updating. If you don't mind, you could send some or all of the following for both your kids and your grandchildren: date of birth, place of birth, name of spouse, date and place of marriage. You can email it to me at the address below. Anyone who has information for other branches of the family can do the same (need lots of info for Helmars, Roses, Straleys, etc.) If there is any information you don't want listed in a public place, just say so.

What's the plan Mona? Coming east?

I'm safely home as well. I went to Vancouver to see the International Fireworks Competition Grand Finale. Sweden won by beating out China and Spain. I have never seen fireworks quite like that before. And I had forgotten just how many people 500,000 was. Just like Woodstock except dry and mostly sober and straight. Very impressive. Certainly more impressive than the Blue Angels who kept buzzing me as I was trying to mow the lawn today. I was glad that they were ours, but it made me wonder what it must be like to live in a war torn country. I have my reservations, Ana and I will be arriving in Asheville about 24 hours after Vanessa arrives in Charlotte. I'll email the details. We'll be staying unti the afternoon of Monday, August 30. §

Lucky you, Steve. We very much enjoyed the lovely Vanessa here, now it is your turn. Jessamyn, Melinda and I had a sunny extra day at the cabin yesterday, tubing (now THAT was fun), cooking, singing, story telling and making s'mores. Today we will put the cabnb back to rights for the next troupe and head down to Brevard for more family adventures, by way of the BlueRidge Parkway.

Happy Birthday, Paul!!! I hope you are having a great birthday, and I am sure that it will be a great year. You must be 14. Send me some pictures and I'll be sure to post a Paul collection. In case anyone didn't notice, I posted a bunch of pictures recently, including pictures of Rex's 80th Birthday Party in L.A. last weekend.

Summer around here has been very pleasant. Ana spent the month of July in Lake Tahoe, but is here now for a few days. Vanessa is on her way. On Tuesday, they both head off to French camp together. Then on or about August 18, we head back to NC for the rest of the summer.

Paula, Melinda and Jess: I hope your trip to NC is exciting and relaxing. No, those two things are not mutually exclusive. Mom, I hope your voice comes back and you are fully recovered from whatever it was you brought back from the west coast. Dad, I hope those bums start winning soon. And everyone else, I hope you are having a great summer. §

HereI am, in Manhattan Beach, finally close to a computer. We have been having a wonderful weekend celebrating Rex and his 80 years. So much good talk, good food and catching up with cousins, nieces and nephews. Beverly and Barry and Kathi have done a wonderful making everybody welcome and glad to be here.Gracie, the yongest member of our troup, and the leader of the new generation has kept us all amused and amazed.
Steve and Ana left for Disneyland this morning. Kate and Christ will start driving up the coast tomorrow, Becky and entourage will head off for Thousand Oaks sometime tomorrow, then Rex goes back to Hawaii on Tuesday, and for once I will be the last one to leave a party. Flying out late Tuesday, spending 4 hours on a layover in Newark, then, Jill will meet me shortly before noon on Wednesday. I expect that by then Paula and girls and Mark and kids will be there and settled in, and the next part of our summer will begin!

Sad to leave, but always happy to arrive.

Ijust made it on the plane: they said it was full, and with a other people waiting, I thought I would not get on. Much to my surprise, as I was calling Steve and switching to Plan B, I was paged to get on the flight! I got the last seat, and they locked the door behind me.

Now I am in the Newark Airport, taking advantage of the latest gadget Steve and Ana set me up with: a mobile phone that connects my PC to the Internet, and here I am! My next flight to Ashville is looking pretty empty, so, barring an unforseen surprise, I should be in the Carolina's for lunch.

Vanessa, Jerome, where you are?

Mark
Monday, July 12, 2004 at 05:14:58 (PDT)
Yeah, great to see a message from you, Kim. It's almost worth making the trip from Seattle to see you go vote GWB out of office. But alas, circumstances don't permit. But do let me know sometime when you are stopping by Seattle. I'd love to come to the airport and buy you a cup of coffee or something. You can reach me at steve@stylos.net.

I dropped Mark off at the airport a few minutes ago. It's always a little sad when someone leaves. But the good news is that he just called and he is on the plane to Newark. So he should have no problem getting on the flight to Asheville. Have a great time in the Carolina's y'all, and we will see you in a month or so. §

Hello from Gig Harbor, WA. I finally got a chance to catch up on things on The Board. I was suprised to hear about the big flood at 117 Wilson Dr. Glad it stayed out of the basement. As for Seattle, known for its rain: I haven't seen a drop here.
I'm having a good time and I've learned a new game, JOKER. It has somethng in common with Backgammon. I will be with Steve and Mark this weekend. Pat and Ken are fine. Dad, what a great story! I wish I could have seen you in your raincoat, hat and boots, raking through the muck in the middle of the night. What an adventure, and a dry basement! Sounds like hot weather in Seattle...happy spring! Yup, 45 by my count. How does it feel, Mona? Happy birthday to David, and hello to Patsy and Ken. Hope you are having a great time, Mom. Right...I think Evangelia is in Kansas City (?), but that's the closest (to OK) relative I know of.

Kimberly...silly girl. I'm 45. (someone give Scott a noogie for me, wouldja?)

Heat wave here in Washington - been near 90 degrees every day for the last week! Mom's at Aunt Pat's. She (Pat) and Ken came up for Dads' Day - great to see them (before they head out to Saipan again!).

Steve, I miss those parties too....think we'll have to rectify the situation!

I also have a hard time believing you are 44, Mona.

Good work on Lake Wilson, Dad. Especially in the middle of the night. I probably would have slept until morning and then checked to see if deep enough to kayak in.

Don't know anyone in OK city.

Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at 09:23:10 (PDT)
boy did it rain last night. It woke me up about midnight and for some reasom I looked at the front yard. It seemed a light was signing and my curiosity led me to explore. It was a reflection of the "lake" in the side yard. I had never seen it that high. I checked the basement and NO water. I got scared it would overflow from the lake so I put on raincoat and boots and hat and made it to the shed where I picked up a rake so I could find the source of the backup. when I got to the intake I found a mound of debry that washed down from the high places and it cloged the drain. Well I kept that clear and it took about a half an hour to drain most of the lake. I went in, took off my rain gear, and checked the basement which was still clear. Thank God for small favors. Panos

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY DAD!!!!! Are you enjoying your peace and quiet?

All quiet here too. We'll have a little bar-b-q here later today, with about 75% of my kids.

Happy MY Father's Day, Dad. I am happy for the chance to tell you how much I appreciate that I was given you for my Dad. (Perhaps I should be thanking Mom...)I am sorry you are home alone with none of your kids to properly appreciate you in person, but I look forward to seeing you in a month or so. I love you Dad, and thanks for being mine.

Actually, the birthday girl was not born at 6:16 military time, but closer to suppertime than breakfast. So she won't have to worry about getting up early to celebrate the minute. But then, why not? Make it a long and happy special day!

Happy Birthday, Little Middle. That does have a nice ring to it, doesn't it? I hope you like the perfect weather that has been delivered to you, weatherwise. 6:16 a.m. edt, eh? I guess we will all have to get up pretty early to celebrate your birthday minute next year. Or would that be birthminute? I hope that this is a great year for you and your family, Mona....§

Wake up sleepyhead, it's your BIRTHDAY!!

It must be a very special time of year out there in Pingreeville, with all these convergent celebrations. Wish I was there to share it with you. At least you have half of the (Paul and Ramona) Stylos kids there. Still not a voting majority though, so don't get any ideas. Enjoy, little middle sister!

Tuesday, June 08, 2004 at 16:17:02 (PDT)
Thanks for the congratulatory messages. We had a very good anniversary. (Yes, it does seem impossible that it was 5 years ago that we were all cavorting around Paula's back yard. Time does funny things. . . )Today we had dinner at the Pisgah Inn on the Blue Ridge Parkway, a spot that must have one of the best views in the world. And good food, too! Then we took a walk in the forest. Paula, tell us more about the "stroll of the heifers". And Steve, do send a picture of Jillian as a graduate.
Ramona
Sunday, June 06, 2004 at 18:20:26 (PDT)
Me too! Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad. What an accomplishment...a union that produced us! Mark and I celebrated our 28th anniversary yesterday...he in Boston at a Gala Event (in a tuxedo) and me in Vermont at a cow event (though I was not in a cow suit as some were). I think this is why I like June so much; so many things to celebrate. Congratulations to Jillian on her graduations. Good to have Steve here for a few hours. Happy Spring to us all.
Paula
Sunday, June 06, 2004 at 06:55:29 (PDT)
And a happy fifth anniversary of your fiftieth anniversary, Mom and Dad. It is hard to beleive that it has been almost five years since we all got together to celebrate that on that hot Boston summer day. I hope the next 55 are as happy and productive as the last 55. We are all glad that you got married and had us.

Greetings from Boston. It's kind of a whirlwind trip. Leigh and I arrived last night to watch Jillian graduate from high school today. Leigh is up in Marblehead and I am in Acton. Always nice to see everyone even if it is only for a few hours. We leave early tomorrow morning, and I will get almost a full day of work in. Jillian looks great and happy and we are all proud of her. Perhaps we will post pictures of her in her red graduation gown. Spring is such a nice time of the year here, but I guess that it is a nice time of the year everywhere....

You'll see me if you venture west! The nursery is going to keep me busy through the summer. And my band was just invited to play at a cool local festival on July 24, for anyone interested in traveling out this way - that would be a good time - great weather and a chance to hear The Overheads, as well. The kids are stoked, cause some pretty fine local bands will be there - they're even bragging on me! -- too weird...

Finally got a chance to see the inside of Athena and Amy's (soon to be) new house: it has a lot of character and charm; unspoiled, as advertised. Needs a lot of cleaning up, but hey, who doesn't. And a backyard just made for parties. Get those horseshoes and badminton rackets ready.

Good luck on your job search Mark A. (or as much luck as you want, in any case).

Huh-oh, this time it disappeared and then posted itself, though I wasn't ready. . .

What I was going to say was, that since no one seems to have any exciting (or other) news to report, we can just comment on the trivia of the week. Here is mine:
I got an order for a book on depresion from someone whose email address started with "sadsack". Then I sent a book on Islam and World Peace to someone whose first name was JIHAD. Today I got an order from someone in Germany whose real name is Kimberly Clarke. She sounded like an American, so I just wondered if she was so embarassed with a name like that she ran off to Germany.
Now, it's your turn.

Jeff is probably too busy having fun with Liss (and taking a final exam as we speak) to read the messages, but he will read them eventually. I just got back late last night; would like to have stayed in Pittsburgh for a few more days but alas I have to work. I had a good conference in Pgh, but not enough play time. Went to an open mike improv theater on Friday night...Liss got to go onstage to play a dead body puppet. Jeff has a new digital SLR camera...canon rebel...just like the one Mark Allan was going to buy (did he get it?). Liss flies back to MA next weekend.

exciting news flash! i found a house i want to buy in northampton! it's relativiely cheap for in town (around the corner from hawley street) and it has a big back yard that abuts woods, the dyke (no joke)(or: as many jokes as you like) and cornfields. it was owned by a woman named kitty may who lived there for her entire ninety years and is now for sale by her grandson who miraculously considers it a burden (okay it needs some work) and is only asking 200,000 (a veritable steal in this town). It has three bedrooms and a big attic, a very well established garden (including grape arbor) and an actual coal/gas/wood burning stove (coal scuttle in basement). we're hoping to put an offer in when we "officially" see it this weekend, which is where you could potentially come in. I didn't think i would find something this fast, and so haven't yet saved much for the downpayment. so don't be surprised to get a phone call from little sister begging and pleading and promising all manner of good times in our huge backyard. Really. Every little bit helps. Repayment to your specifications. I never wanted anything so much in my life. and i think it's going to work. and i can't wait to have you all over to work on it i mean visit. more later from

welcome home to all my well travelled brethren ! i'm glad everyone and their luggage mad it safe. i've been very busy with spring and various jobs, and yesterday we threw a fiftieth birthday kind-of-a-surprise party for my good friend linda shaw to which many dignitaries up to and including the mayor of northampton came (every body loves linda shaw!) and people gamely hung around our burgeoning garden in spite of the damp chill (well, at least they hung around outside while the mayor was there), then they all came inside to get warm and eat of the many delicious dishes (mostly amy's) (note to scott (and family) -- leftover pad thai ...) and we sang the theme from hawaii 5-0h as a birthday song. I'm really glad everyone has had such exciting travels and that those of us who stayed home are having some good excitement too. Mona i can't wait to hear about your gig, and your new garden too. Good health to betsy, and all her kin (that's us!)

Home again, safe and sound. Lovely to see Melinda, and London. The London Eye is like a huge ferris wheel, but it takes 30 minutes for a complete revolution, with 25 people per capsule. Amazing.

And Jamie Remar was in my class.

New zip codes in Newton, huh? Do tell.

Oh, and spring has officially arrived in Acton. Yipee!

What's the London Eye?

In the blast from the past department, I met a gal from Newton at the nursery yesterday: one of the Remar clan - Liza. We had quite an interesting talk...seemes Michael is now a surgeon in a town outside of Nashua N.H.

Also, did you know, Newton has had it's zip codes changed?!

Have a great day, all!

Our last day in London, and the weather is perfect! Sunny and dry. We spent the morning wandering through the markets, came here (Melinda's flat) for another lovely lunch, and now we are off to see more sights. Tonight we have reservations on the London Eye, then perhaps dinner and dancing at a Greek restaurant. Tomorrow morning we head back across the pond. Ah, vacation.

Wednesday in London. More walking, more rain, and more of lovely Melinda's company. We have gone to some fun eating establishments, seen Buckingham Palace, visited museums and pottery shops, hopped on and off the tube many times, and are still having a great time. The sun is sure to come out tomorrow, as it always is in France.

Alas, we are home safe and sound. But guess what, no luggage! They won't tell me where it is this time, only that it did not get on the plane in Amsterdam. I guess the three hour layover wasn't long enough. Other than the luggage, it was a great trip. Many thanks to those who made it possible. Now, to bed....§

No adventures here, just had my first chance to have a fire in the back yard yesterday...I'm carving out a spot for my own woodland garden, inspired by the "Garden In Spring" class I took at work last week. This weekend is my first chance to catch my breath since I started work in Feb...now taxes are behind me, as is the annual Gig, and the first half of the Spring Rush at the nursery.

They've got me doing customer data entry, and I've been noticing some things: last month most of our plants were going to places like North Carolina and Virginia. Last week it was to places like New Jersey and Massachusetts (yes, a couple to Newton!) and Maine, and even Alaska!!

Betsy got her Learner's Permit and Paul is now running track! Miranda had a bad sore throat and went to the Dr, convinced it was Strep. Their tests were negative, and they wouldn't give her anything for the pain, so she suffered for a while, till big Mama got on the phone and got them to at do something!! They prescribed antibiotics...3 days later the results from the 'other' lab came back, and yes, it's strep. Harumph.

I hope some of you will come out to visit this way, this summer! My bower is taking shape: you should see it!!! I mean it.

here I sit looking at the board, hoping I do not make a mistake in typing and wanting to be communicative. we just (about an hour ago) got back and it is raining in Juan Les Pins. Thanks to the generosity of Steve and to Mark's savoir faire we found a road to Rome and it was spectacular. We found Melinda Rose on the way and what a joy it was to have her with us. What did we do in Rome you ask? Well the first stop was the hotel since we got there late and it was a very nice place and was one of the very nice things Steve provided us with. But after breakfast the fun began. We found the river tever (which I thought the tigress ran through Rome) and drove north to the vatican. Boy was there a lot of people there and you had to be screened to get into the square. After we made ir we were milling around the huge crowd and looked up at the platform in front of the church (St.Peters) and saw what looked like a string of brides waiting in an apparent line.As poeple filed by we got a glimpse of a man seated wearing a white hat (later we saw the white robe also) Of course it turned out to be the pope (pont. maxinus as the signs told us) blessing the newly weds. As he was wheeled into his vehicle the crowd rose, cheered and scrambled for a place along the path to get a closer glims of him. Not knowing what was going on we missed it but I think Mark got a distant picture of him. After all that excitement we got into a huge line ( it was how we spent a lot of time) and got to climb to the top of the cathedral. Steve and I took the elevator for the first 2 hundred stairs, and then walked up the nest 323. I just barely made it and was really weasing when I got there. It really was impressive and I guessed by the work it must have taking half the populace must have been involved in the structure and thousands of artists in the art work. After seeing all this we desended to the basement of the basilica and saw what was advertised as St Peters tomb and the resting place ot some other popes. Then Steve Melinda Mark and I decided to make our was to the coloseum. It was further than I could walk ( we did a ton of that) so a taxi brought us there. Another huge line and wait but we finally got in and I was embodied with the images of lions and gladiators doing battle The place was so huge I do not see how spectators could get a view of what was going on. But I guess they did. Perhaps the other half of the populace was involve in buildinf this grand and at the time magnificent ediface. We returned be taxi ti where we parked the cars and Mark took off trying to Melinda to where she was suposed to be but that is another story.

there is nothing like casually browsing the messageboard and finding one's name posted all over it. It is wonderful to have so many caring relatives, speaking of which... I am especially thankful, at present, to those who have made this trip so personal, so exciting, and of course I am always grateful for a little pampering. Jie and i started off in brussels, visiting with sandra, pierre and their children, and i think here i should mention bilou, the music, the house, the food and especially the people were far more than i had hoped for. and then we went on to nancy's with her collection of treasures, more good food, wonderful view (can the sound of birds singing count as part of a view?) and wonderful stories of her travels. This was followed by a last minute trip to cologne (or more accurately neuss)where we met more of marks friends from brussels. all i can say is the audrey was one of the most kind hearted people i have ever met, and of course there was aelx, and the children. We have spent the past four nights here with dagmar and volkmar. this included more pampering, more delicious food, and i must say a wonderful tour of hamburg. I feel as though i would have missed so much of it if not for them. today we saw many thousands of containers on the port where buddy once worked so many years ago. this entire trip has had a filling of stepping into the past, but not mine, and not one i could have ever known. i am hearing stories about great sections of your (my relatives) lives that i have never known. it is so easy to forget that everyone's life consists of so much history, and to have so many reminders is wonderful. i'm sorry, i dont mean to dominate the message board, but I did want to let everyone know how i am doing, and to say thank you to those who have made all of this possible, both relatives and new (i hope) friends. i have found on this trip two of my favorite things, people and conversation, and both have been such a pleasure. it almost makes travel seem like just an excuse. thank you all, love you all,

okay here's the carolina report: cabin was cold that first night but beautiful the next day, such a magic spot. paula and i did a little indoor/outdoor housekeeping and had a last sweet potato from the fire and a last look at the stream and wandered home (not on the blue ridge parkway becuse it's still closed on mount mitchell due to ice in the tunnels (they never heard of rocksalt down here)) an home to help mom with the flea market (fun and successful) and to go to southern folk art center where we made surprisingly few purchases but did see a great quilt show. Now we're packing the car (yay no more of my stuff in mom and dad's basement!) and driving to hickory tomorrow before we head north

A few warm days and cold nights at the cabin does sound good about now. Does anyone know when they will be there this summer? I think Ana and I will come back for a week, and forgo Boston this summer. Ana is in camp for most of August, and we plan to go to Rex's eightieth birthday party in L.A in late July. So we are thinking early or late July for NC.

Spring sprung a bit early around here this year. It seems like it has been warm and sunny on the weekends and cold and rainy during the week. Can't complain about that, unless you are working outside like Mona.

Ana and I leave for Antibes in less than two weeks so we are starting to get excited. Wish you all could come along...That's it from here, more from there....§

Must be pretty chilly there at the cabin this time of year, even with the fire. Still I wish I was there too, having s'mores and playing boggle.

It's finally starting to feel like spring around here - temps in the 50's and a few crocuses in the front yard.

Right on, Melissa!!

flowers, flowers everywhere! We've had real March weather around here - beautiful sunny day on Monday - we hit 70 degrees! Also have had downpouring rain and intermittent hail. But the sun is up before I am (almost) these days. And I'm up by 6:30 ~ now that's a change!!

My own crocuses have come and gone, and the hyacinths and tulips and daffodils are emerging. My left arm can't quite keep up with my right (I do equal lifting with both), so I'm still sore, but don't need tylenol to sleep anymore.

Remember, March showers bring April flowers.

Hang in there Paula, before you know it it will be sunny and warm with little flowers popping up everywhere. Come to think of it, you'll be seeing those things alot sooner than I will, when you go south. Will be fun for you and AKS.

Looking forward to seeing Mark A. this weekend. Also this weekend, Melissa has her last race of the season, up in Maine again. Go Liss!

Thank you all so much for the birthday messages! i love how the personalities come through even though the writing all looks much the same. Thank you for the new version of the happy birthday song, vanessa and jerome. i am so glad you had cake. we had a little lemon cake from my friend ron, but mostly we had cookies. and ice cream. paula came from the farthest away, and ran the samosa factory with the volunteer/slave army. joey and lissa continued their near life-long streaks of party attendance. scott and anne were able to just walk over from wilson ave, and anne was sporting the best of all accessories, the decorated clothespin. I felt fully loved and indulged and my favorite part of all was when everyone sang moon river instead of "happy birthday" (which i suppose means we send the royalty check to johnny mercer instead of the two ladies in idaho)(and paula knew all the words) fifty voices make a beautiful sound! thank you all for thinking of me and joining me in my annual celebration of life. if anyone out there wants help planning their birthday party, large or small, this year, i'm your girl! mom and dad, i'll call you soon!

It feels like spring but there is still mounds of frozen snow that just don't want to disappear. I have a question for anyone with a better memory than me-for some reason it seemed that we use to celebrate March 1st. Have I lost it or is it a day that I forgot about.

We have been looking at colleges-Jess has it narrowed down to three of course in order of choice Oklahoma City University, UMASS Amherst, and Bridgewater State. We are going to visit Oklahoma the end of the month and UMASS Amherst this Friday. This has been fun looking at different schools.

My email address is khscott76@hotmail.com Happy Tuesday to all.

Yes, the rain has subsided and it was a very pleasant day today. The final totals of the rain yesterday ranged from 6 inches to 8 inches, depending on where on the Island you were. Of course for us, it was the day that we were traveling from the North Shore to Honolulu (on the south shore). We had to turn around once because a road was washed out. That cost us two hours. All in hour, it turned out to be a four hour drive. I didn't know that was possible on an island that measures 45 miles by 30 miles. It's been a great trip in spite of it all. I had a long run along Waikiki Beach today, topped off by a nice swim in a warm Pacific Ocean. And to think I'll be skiing next weekend.

Steve. I hope the sun has come out and that you're getting to see the sights of Hawaii. After bragging about the wonderful weather in Hawaii for so long, my brother must be (should be) embarrassed!

Aloha from Hawaii. I must say that I feel right at home. Especially since today we got more than 6 inches of rain. That's right, about 15% of the annual rainfall in Seattle. Reminds me of sunny Crete last February. C'est la vie. At least it is supposed to clear up and be at least a little nice for the rest of the weekend. I'm at Rex's house right now. I'm happy to report that he seems to be doing great. I hope all is well with all of you...

In answer to Mom's email: I had a great first week at work. The first day it poured down rain like I have seldom seen in 23 years in the Northwest! So hard, it was funny! But despite that, I'm loving every minute of it. There are a variety of tasks, endless learning opportunities, amazing to watch the cycle of life playing out in front of my eyes. The folks are great to work with. And though I come home tired and slightly stiff and sore, I'm managing the physical work load very well. In fact, in a way, I feel more like my old (macho) self than I have in years.

I hope someone will come and visit me there!

Skiing is great with my little feet. However, does anyone go Ice fishing? The ice is perfect this winter with our cold New England temperature. I knew! I've been celebrating Candlemas for several years. My ritual usually includes a bonfire, which in olden times was held for the whole community: the women of a village would let their own home fires burn out, and the communal fire would symbolize the dependence of each on the whole, and the commitment to help each other. As well as to give them a chance to clean out the home hearths!! It's a wonderful time of year.
mona
Sunday, February 01, 2004 at 19:36:16 (PST)
"When German settlers arrived in the 1700s, they brought a tradition known as Candlemas Day, which has an early origin in the pagan celebration of Imbolc. It came at the mid-point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. Superstition held that if the weather was fair, the second half of Winter would be stormy and cold. For the early Christians in Europe, it was the custom on Candlemas Day for clergy to bless candles and distribute them to the people in the dark of Winter. A lighted candle was placed in each window of the home. The day's weather continued to be important. If the sun came out February 2, halfway between Winter and Spring, it meant six more weeks of wintry weather."

Who knew? This could become my new favorite holiday.

It's official. Ana and I are going to France from April 7-18. And Jillian is going from April 9-21. Any other takers? Mark and Paula, when will you be in London? It is hard to beleive that this weekend will be February. And Monday will be Bud's day, er, Groundhog's Day. It's a good thing that January and February are fast months.

The information comes from Pat who got it by email from Mike, who was there. Congratulations to the parents, grandparents and great grandparents! And WELCOME to the babies.

The cats are gone so we got our old PC back. So useful! It does not snow here but it's so beautiful to see both the alpes and the mediterannean sea from our village. So the snow is not far. I am happy for Vanessa who is going to have her school classes at the mountain for two weeks. She'll study in the morning and for the first time of our life will ski in the afternoon. She's really looking forward to it.

Jerome will be going for a week vacation to a ski station nearby and I am sure is going to like it (he'll be with his bestfriend).

I thank you all for the nice christmas presents you sent to all of us. and hope next year I'll be able to do the same.

We got pictures of you all over the flat and we talk about all of you so often.

Vanessa's scool mates were really impressed when vanessa showed them her grandmother's book that she is actually reading.

Then, I showed them my mother's books and they are going to meet her best friend who is wife of a french senator! I hope to be able to take them to Paris to see their uncle and cousins this year.

I am sure it's going to be a great year.

Paul, please take care of you, you are travelling so much! But please know that we are looking forward to see you. Ramona: do you travel a little bit?

Vanessa and Jerome are reading in bed before bedtime.

They're growing up so quickly!

BONNE ANNEE A TOUS. NOUS PENSONS BIEN A VOUS.

Dad is on his way east. We got up very early this morning and got him to the airport. He should get in to Ashville at about 9:00 local time. It was a great visit with him. Even the weather cooperated.

A very happy year of the Wooden Monkey to all! Dad, let us all know when you arrive....Thanks. §

Yay for Ana. Good thing you have lots of family on both coasts that can show some things on the guitar. Enjoy!

Yes, the days are definitely starting to get longer. I noticed it when I was leaving work at about 5 PM yesterday. Now if only the temperature could get above freezing.

Happy Chinese New Year to everybody! Year of the Monkey.

Are you still out west, Dad?

Greetings from the southshore,

It was negative 8 at 9:30 this morning and we have no school too! I do not remember ever having a no school day for being too cold outside? Does anyone remember having one for this reason. It is a historical day for Mass. with respect to the weather! Stay warm all! Kim Scott

Hiya, Kim!!

Always good to see you, and all the relations here. I was just talking w/ my dad about Paul, and his passing, and how tough it's got to be.

Please, let me know if you're coming down to the contiguous 48 and we'll meet up.

Hello, Stylos/Helmar family:

I just have to ask--how can you folks STAND that cold weather? (smile) It's 40 degrees today in Juneau. We have had some cold weather this year and quite a bit of snow, and there's colder weather headed this way. I couldn't believe you were getting zero degree weather last weekend!

How are all of you doing? I've lost most of the Helmar e-mail addresses, so I hope this is a good contact for you as well as the Stylos clan. I've been thinking of the family lately because of the holidays, but once again I didn't get it together to write cards. I hope you all had a good holiday season.

My kids were both home for Christmas. Patrice is living here now. She graduated from college (Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon) last June and came home after that. She had a very tough couple of months during the summer, with the let down from completing college and finally have time to deal with Paul's death. She is doing much better now, but I was really worried about her last summer and fall.

My son Leo is going to college in Portland, Oregon, and called today and said he is really enjoying his classes. Classes were supposed to start last week, but Portland shut down for close to a week because of a winter snow storm. Things are back to normal now.

I am hoping to get back there in July for the Democratic convention. I want to come back for a visit, and will plan one whether or not I get elected as a delegate, but I thought it would be fun to combine the two things. I hope to see many of you then.

Thanks for the web page. I check it out from time to time to see what the east coast family is up to. All my best--Kim

Yes, a hearty congratulations to Tim! He and I (and maybe Dad and Mona) will be going out to a casino in Suquamish to celebrate his coming of age. He's spending the day on the ski slopes, where they let you ski free on your birthday. Thinks are warm and sunny in Seattle today. They are always sunnier and warmer when Dad is in town...§

Wasn't 72 the year that Mark Spitz won all the gold?

It's cold, cold here and they are predicting up to a foot of snow tonight. In true Seattle fashion, they have already begun calling off schools and meetings, even though the flakes haven't begun to fall. At least they are predicting that it will all be melted by the weekend.

It was a very relaxing New Year's weekend here. Except watching the local football team go down in a blaze of glory. §

Happy 2004 to all the readers of this board. If what one is doing when the year changes is a predictor of what one will be doing all year, then I will be sleeping and Paul will be watching a ball game. Why am I not surprised? Sure enough a game is being watched, but I have not yet had a nap and it's almost 4:00 o'clock. The temperature has gone up to 60!! so I'm going for a walk and may not even opt for a nap today. (That can wait for the seasonably cold weather that is sure to return soon.)I wish for us all lots of smiles in 2004.
