The Boxes of Dr. Spasmodious

Dr. Spasmodious sat at his desk,
the end of the year drawn nigh,
haunted, harried, full of gloom,
watching the seconds die.

The maid behind him sloshed her mop
in a bucket of silvery suds;
unborn children watched through a crack
in the floor of the attic above.

We were together, you and I,
with other children yet to be born,
between the ages, if not in life,
one to the other, eternally sworn.

You, frail and fair as a lily,
held my hand by light of the moon,
pale beams brightly spilling
on boxes all over the room -

boxes heavy with dust of the dead,
time and decay - all but one:
tied with a shining bit of thread
fine as a baby's hair and red.

"Tell me your prophecy, Maid of the Mop,"
said the Doctor downstairs below,
"What's simple to you is subtle to me.
What sort of year will this coming year be?"

She shook a spark from her long red hair
which flew like a star to his tree
"Spring will be damp and Summer dry
and Autumn come presently . . ."

So saying, she bound her flowing hair
with a ribbon of scarlet twine,
returned to mopping the floor away
until nothing remained but shine.

Down we came with cautious tread
you, I, and all of the others -
bearing the box tied with a thread
fine as a baby's hair and red.

The maid once more unloosed her hair,
gray now as clouds when laden with rain.
You she chose, took by the hand,
allowed, out of all, to remain.

The rest she kissed both sides of the cheek
as the chimes of the New Year dinned,
one by one sent each through the door
to dissolve in the rain and wind.

Dr. Spasmodious watched from his chair
on the point of a tear but refrained.
He smiled instead, held out his arms
to you who were spared from the rain.

"Welcome my child to life again,
to the kingdom of hope and pain.
Bring love in the midst of dark and hate,
New Year‘s Day two thousand and eight.”

Steve, you’re checking out! Does that mean no more green and red Jell-O; isn’t that what you get when you’re in the hospital over Christmas? Anyways, since Mark will be your cook I recommend his spaghetti Bolognese, it is fabulous and you’ll love it :-,)

I’ll be back on the island with Stazie today, I also need to get things ready for Jerome; we all look forward to his stay with us. Don’t worry about anything here; we’ll check the house and take care of Lucky. All you have to do is rest easy and get strong.

Ramona, I really appreciate all your updates; it is always encouraging to hear good news like this.

The good news from Rochester is that Steve expects to be discharged from the hospital tomorrow! That's 2 weeks after his double transplant. He will be moving over to the Transplant House nearby the Mayo, and Mark will be there as caregiver. (Mark's duties, for the most part, will be cooking, shopping, doing laundry and seeing that Steve gets back to the hospital for his tests and check-ups.)I'm sure all the readers of this board share our joy that things have gone so well. Three cheers for Steve and his new replacement parts!

Hello, all. I was so glad to read the messages and catch up with some of you. What an amazing family! Steve, we need a picture of you without the moustache, just to see if it's really you. Blessings your way, you handsome hunk! We Colsons wish all of you a gentle, happy 2008.

Happy Birthday, Anne! And we, too consider ourselves lucky to have you in our family! And you always make me feel better about having a birhday right before Christmas by having one right after.

I'm almost, but not quite ready, to move on to the next phase. It has been great to have everyone here. Welcome to the current and next phase of Mark, Scott, Paula and Athena!

Wow, birthday messages for little-ole-me on the Stylos message board! To quote Steve Martin in The Jerk, "I'm somebody now!!"

Thanks for all the wishes, the day has been great so far and I'm looking forward to a wonderful dinner with Scott tonight. Birthday life is good!

Paula, I'm about three quarters through my birthday closet purge, thanks for sharing your tradition.

Athena, you win the favorite color prize! You know me well.

Safe journeys to all Stylos who are traveling today. Steve, good to see you post, you must be about ready to get out of that hospital and move into your next phase of recovery.

Happy my birthday to all!!!!

HAPPY ANNE DAY! I hope you paint the town red, or whatever happens to be YOUR favorite color. What is your favorite color, by the way?

I am glad to hear everyone is moving around safely and hopefully will all end up in the right place with the right luggage.

Steve, how wonderful to have a steady stream of visitors... but I bet you will be most thrilled to be in your own bed without all the poking and prodding I am sure you are having to endure. You hear that Mark? No poking and prodding!

Glad to hear the surgery ended well yesterday. And glad to know Mark is there now to keep an eye on the nurses. Mom and Dad must be starting on their way home about now.

Tonight Anne and I will go out for some fun, dinner and a show perhaps, to celebrate her birthday. Yup, it's today. A post-Christmas baby.

Mark has arrived safely in Rochester, bags and all. My surgery ended well, but was a bit grueling. Not the path we had planned on when we woke up this morning, but a path with a happy ending after all....

Mark, if you get this anytime today, call for information about getting here from Minneapolis.

Merry Christmas to Stylos Nation
As you gather in different locations
May your day be one of joy and fulfilled wishes
And no one has to do the dishes :-)

Okay, so I'm a little weak in my poetry skills.

Had a very nice visit with my parents and offspring! Everyone seemed to be in good spirits. We don't know exactly what we will be doing for the actual day, but it is shaping up to be low-key and happy. I am definately feel stronger every day and trying to get used to this new regiment of drugs, vitamins and tests. I have celebrated my new organs with a new look and have shaved my moustache. Mark should be flying directly from Nice to Minneapolis, with a four hour layover in Boston. Mark, call from Boston if you did not get your flight info. Dad will be driving up to Minneapolis to get him. Then Mark and I will be in Rochester until what I assume with be the first of February or so.

The people here at the hospital are congenial and competant. I feel like the luckiest person on the planet! Thanks for all the love and messages being sent my way via the message board!

HI

hi
Monday, December 24, 2007 at 12:47:10 (PST)
I did it again! Hit the tab button, I mean. I was getting ready to say, Now can we hear something about Jerome! Let's all stay put for a few days so that we can stop worryng about each other.
Steve sounded well this morning. Having some routine procedures this morning and looking forward to seeing Ana.
Check in, Jerome or Vanessa or Sophie.
And Mona, don't concern yourself with the typos. This computer system may not be forgiving, but we are! And poor dear Betsy! I hope your misery is short-lived and that your Christmas is merry and bright.

Ramona
Monday, December 24, 2007 at 07:30:41 (PST)
Leigh, Rest assured. Ana arrived last night, well, around 1:15 this morning after a long ride (by limo) from the Minneapolis airport. She's in good spirits and sound asleep right now. We'll go to the hospital to see Steve in about an hour, then back here to the Girt of Life House for a big Christmas dinner. I'm sure she'll be calling you.
Paul is still in Chicago, but the weather has cleared so he is expected to fly in around 2:00 this afternoon. Too late for our festive dinner, but then, according to him, he's already had one Christmas dinner and that's enough.

Ramona
Monday, December 24, 2007 at 07:25:05 (PST)

Paula
Monday, December 24, 2007 at 07:18:47 (PST)
Yes, do let us all know when Ana arrives.

Mark -- that's rich!! Thanks for the slice of life.

Up here in the northwest corner: Betsy is sick for Christmas again - came down with a little coughing and then raging fever and body aches a couple of days ago. She so doesn't deserve this...here's hoping the bug is vanquished soon.

Happy dark of winter lit by full moon night to you all.

And YAY!!! for Steve having his best day yet! So glad to hear it - continuing with the good health vibes from this part of the world out to you. Seahawks won. :)

So , tonight down at Jackson Square in front of the spotlit cathedral and along with 1000's of other bundled Orleanians, I'm holding a candle and catstrangling the bejeesus out of some Christmas carols. Clear skies. Full Wolf moon.A balmy 40 for you hardy types. Next to me ,squeezed into a form-fitting ,crimson and sequined spandex disco dress is a 6ft 3in ,bearded and henna bewigged drag queen.Matching heels and accessories, naturalement. I was compelled.
"Outlaw outfit."
Shivering a bit,he replied-"Honey,this old thing ....it's like a cheap hotel.Drafty in the back and no ballroom."

The good news is that Steve says he has felt better today than any day yet. The other news--not so good--is that Paul/Buddy and Ana who were expected in by now or soon, won't make it in because the Rochester airport is closed. The wind is fierce and there has been somewhat of a white-out. Buddy is in a hotel in Chicago and we're waiting to hear whether Ana left Seattle or not. (It depends on what the weather is in Minneapolis). We (Steve and I) are standing (or lying) by our phones to do whatever is necessary to get them here as expiditiously and safely as possible. We're also waiting to hear about Jerome's flight across the Atlantic. We know it was delayed at least 3 hours. I will post the news when we hear it. Some of you will get it before I do, I'm sure.
I've gotten very fond of my "home away from home", the Gift of Life Transplant House. It is set up wonderfully. Everyone pitches in to help keep the place orderly and clean, and everyone has a story to share, as well as a listening ear. Right now it is beautifully decorated, and various groups continually bring in pastries, fruit, and other good things to eat.

Sorry to have missed a family party. But then I would have made 13. I talked to Dad (Buddy) as he was boarding the plane in Hartford so I know he made it to the airport in time. Thanks, Scott. I haven't talked to Steve this morning. I'll send my daily report later today.

We met, we ate, we celebrated Scott's birthday, we ate dessert, and we had Christmas. All in a day's work. Cameron says "vacation is hard work". We all send love and happy thoughts to Steve, who we are sure, would rather be here than there. We all love the traffic on the message board. Keep it up! Scott bless us everyone.

It's time for a report from the 10th floor of the Eisenberg Building here at the Mayo Clinic. I spent time with Steve this morning and he looks and sounds good. He's not exactly comfortable, but then who would be? They keep getting him up to do something (shower, walk down the hall, watch an informative video) when he'd rather be lying down and resting, but he's coooperative and they all like him here. I have met several of his doctors and they say that things are coming along as hoped or expected (including the discomfort) but they aren't ready to talk about when he might be dismissed, yet. I expect Steve will be speaking for himself on these pages soon. I am comfortable and well accommodated at the Gift of Life House. So many dramatic stories among the people here. This trip the weather has been warmer than it is in Massachusetts, but snow is predicted this weekend. We (Steve and I) are looking forward to Paul and Ana's arrival on Sunday.

I am back again. I spent a couple of hours at the Mayo this morning, in and out of Steve's room as they ministered to him. I haven't seen any of the doctors myself, but it seems the consensus of opinion that he is doing well. I walked around the nurses station with him a couple of times (along with an aide--or orderly--and the pole containing ...who knows what. Mark Wight leaves today to go home to Chicago. I decided to stay home (that is, at the Gift of Life House) this afternoon so that Steve can get more rest.
I wish a very Happy Birthday to SCOTT! I hope good things are happening to you today.
I have enjoyed reading all the messages from friends and kin of the Stylos family. I will keep on checking in from here.

Welcome to even more old friends: Leigh and Anne.

And of ccourse HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Scottie. Mark is right, don't even try. We love you just the same. And I won't even try at your age, though I do know you are 3 years younger that Steve, and a year and a half younger than me...are you going to dance all night?

Thank you all so much for being my friends and family. Speaking from experience, there is no more powerful medicine then the love of those whom we are close to. But the Chesca's chocolate sauce has to be a close second.

It's been great to have Mom and Mark Wight here. They are out having dinner there. I sleep better just knowing that they are in town.

It's also been so nice to see so many of the lofters make their first appearance to this message board. It's been hard for me to believe that we have been doing this for more than ten years. We have quite a family archive here by now.

The surgery was long, but it seems like it just flew by, as has the time since. It really does seem to put things in perspective: the things that are important from those that are less so. The things we can control from those we can’t.
I wish I had the energy to reach out to you and express my feelingsBut I am afraid that will not be the case tonight. Soon. I promise. And thanks again to all of you for making this one of the best Birthday yet!!!

No better excuse for my first official message on the Stylos Board than to say Happy Birthday to Steve! I'm so happy to be a small part of celebrating the anniversary of your birth, and your physical rebirth, on this day.

I'll miss seeing you at the Stately Stylos Manor this Christmas, but I know when I see you again you'll be healthy and well, and handsome as ever!

Keep kickin' butt in the healing department, Steve!! Happy day!!

Happy Birthday!! This truely is like a "re-birth" day for you. Sort of like you get a brand new life...wow...something like this certainly gives us all a lot to think about, and so much to be thankful for. I wish you could be with the Layne clan as we gather in Gig Harbor for the holidays, but you'll definitely be in all our thoughts. Cheers!

Steve,Ana was so happy to hear from you last night (PST) that she ran upstairs and told us all the good news. We were surprised, and then she bragged, “Yeah, my dad was the fastest person out of recovery; he called even earlier and left a message.”

Happy birthday Steven, you are 56 years young!

Here is wishing you a happy one, Steve! I hope you are having lots of cake, ice cream, and a few drinks on your birthday! At least a few morphine drips!

It's just so nice to see so many friends stop by!

You know, I've been thinking all day about how strange it must be to awaken after such a long surgery. I've been under general anasthesia I think 5 times, but it was always a matter of a couple of hours or less, and even then was quite disorienting.

Continued get well wishes coming from Kingston. Good night all you dear people...

You know, I always feel quite squeamish when I reread my postings here - they so often feel awkardly overly intimate or maudlin or corny. But do I let that stop me??? Well, sometimes, yes. Sometimes I take a break. But now (brace yourself), I have to send out a little prayer:

May the surgeons' hands be steady and skilled, and many thanks and blessings to the ((((donor)))) and the ((((donor's family)))). We feel your kindness and generosity, and pray you find peace and comfort...

Thanks for dropping by the message board, Paula. I was beginning to think it had become just a Birthday Board. Surely some of you have some news, or comments or jokes or riddles...OK, here's a riddle, or a question. (I'm taking this from a birthday card from Sammie Fisher.) Do you know why a woman's mind is cleaner than a man's mind? I'll give you a day or two to come up with an answer before I give you the REAL one. Keep watching.

And I thought Massachusetts was cold! I'm happy to stay inside here here in our 20th floor apartment and watch the Christmas lights appear (and also the snow).

Steve and I have had some fierce games of Scrabble (he beat me bad) and am enjoying Tracy Kidder's latest book. Steve is in good spirits and we both enjoy eating out, even though there's a complete kitchen here. I'll be back in MA on Wednesday. Keep the home fires burning...

It has been a while since I have been on the Stylos Message board. I hope that everyone is well and enjoying the lights of the season. Not the ones in the stores!

It was nice to know that Dick enjoys the picture of his Mom. I am not surprized Uncle Buddy that you got skunk-Dick learned from Bubba and he was even harder to beat!

Steve, Jess, and I are all well. Steve and I are enjoying years of 50 plus and almost 50 and on the other side Jess is enjoying the years we all remember the early 20's!

Relax and be stay healthy. Have a great weekend.

Mom arrived safely and she and I have been living the good and relaxing life in Rochester. We haven't been outside much since it has been in the single digits all day and we are expecting the season's first major snowstorm tomorrow. Mom doesn't get much computer time, so she doesn't leave as much message-wise as she used to. I hope everyone is enjoying the Holiday season!!!

I forgot to mention he is very proud of a painting of his mother that Kim had given him. It is a picture of a very beautiful women that was done (I believe) by the mother of a baby that Helen was taking care of on Montvale road. I guess there were attractive poeple in our family. PS

I recently visited Richard Straley. I thought you all would like a report so here it is.First of all I want to say I was impresed with the facility at which he is staying. Although it is dificult to visit poeple who are in the need of care it is encouraging to find the environment is as good as one can ask for. As for Richard he looked to me as I rememberd him. He has put on some weight but I recognized his mannerisms. He is somewhat slow but seems to be very much aware of things around him. In fact he skuncked me in a game of cribbage and all in all he beat me 4 games to 1. I plan to see him again soon and hope that he continues to be as well as I found him this time. PS

Well, things are peaceful in the sleepy town of Rochester, MN. Fall is in full swing and the town seems braced for a snowstorm. I'm headed to Chicago for the holiday, and will be hooking up with Mark, Ana and Jerome. Can't wait to see everyone. It's beginning to look like I won't make it to Boston for Christmas - ya'll will just have to come see me here. I'm staying in good spirits and waiting patiently (no pun intended) for this phase of my life to be over. I hope that everyone everywhere has a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!! Hawaii is by far my most favorite place on earth, and I dream of the day I can return. Synchronicity, Dad! Last night I was relating the story about when you and I drove from Seattle to North Carolina (and which car was that??) in spring of 2000, and when we woke up to a snow storm in Iowa then drove through Cincinnatti and Kentucky in a huge thunder/lightening storm. I was some kind of scared then.

Other weird thing -- last night when I was telling this story, me and David and Betsy and Bonnie (Betsy's roommate) were having dinner in an Outback Steakhouse (which is why I was remembering the trip - cause the night before, in Iowa, we ate at Outback - my first time) ... anyway, the thing is, we were in Olympia last night delivering to Betsy her new car -- a red Honda hatchback (2 seater) that gets great mileage.

Glad you guys made it home safe and sound! Hi Athena!!!

WOW what a ride. The most hazardest ride, following my youngest daughter through a thundering rain storm that seemed to be riding with us for the better part of six or seven hours. But at last we made it and now she has that little red civiv hatchback (a very good car by the way) which is not a gas hog. P>S>

Moi! I am into the 3rd week of my class on the beginnings of the scientific tradition - have learned scads about Empedocles, Parmenides, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Theophrastus, the Stoics, The Epicurean school...it's all quite interesting and I'm amazed at the huge holes in my education thus far.

We're having (in my opinion) an exceptionally colorful fall in the Puget Sound region. I am secretly plotting something, but if I told you, it wouldn't really be a secret, now would it. :)

Mark! I want you to have a very happy birthday. I also want you to know Vanessa is not the ony one that misses you. A really strange thing happened. Last night while the baseball game was on I tried to log on to MLB, but the computer would not respond. So I sufered through to the end and sufered through the NY loss. Still i was happy but wondered how I could get to wish you a happy birthday. I shut down the computer and went on to bed. I woke up this morning and turned on the computer and here I am. Even the gods want me to wish you a happy next 50, so go on and have it. panos

Greetings from Mexico! I'm down here for a long weekend before heading to Minnesota next week. Boy, this place if different in September than it is in February. I have never heard such thunder! And everything is so green. I think I could handle Seattle's rain better if it came down in bunches, rather than a constant drizzle. The ninety degree temperatures would make it more welcome as well.

Things are going well in Bellevue. Ana and Jerome seem to be adjusting to their new schools and I am glad to have put my year of chemical purgatory in the rear view mirror. My plan (and Ana's plan) is still to be in Massachusetts for the end of the year holidays. I'll get there on December 21 and Ana will arrive on Christmas Eve. We'll leave on New Year's day. Hope all is well over Stylosville.....

I've always found school year cycles to be very comforting. Which is probably why I keep finding myself back in school :)

I'm actually (still) considering teaching - partly because I love explaining things and partly because I love the social aspect of seeing people regularly, but on a somewhat shallow level. Well, maybe shallow isn't quite the right term.

mona
Thursday, September 06, 2007 at 17:51:00 (PDT)
My turn? I have to admit, I have been avoiding the messageboard out of guilt for not thanking you all for your lovely birthday wishes months ago. Is it really too late to thank you now?

I have moved in, it is true, and whoever wants to see my lime green kitchen is very welcome to come visit.

It is funny, when one is a child time is cyclical. School starts and the cycle of class and vacation begins again. I think the rest of us feed off of that because otherwise it is one straight line into who knows where. But how is it for all you who are actually experiencing the cycle (child and adult alike)?

Melinda

Yes, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! And thanks for the party, I cannot believe it has been a year already. How are you two enjoying wedded bliss?

Another move accomplished, thanks to Scott who once again saved the day. Mark, Jess and I also helped Melinda move into a wonderfuly colorful apartment in Cambridge. No more moving, okay?

Mom, how about an update on your progress? Is Dad still peeling peaches for you? And what about all of you going back to school? I hear that may include Paul, Betsy, Miranda, Vanessa, Jerome, Ana, Mona? Jeff? (are you in 100th grade yet?) And how do you like your new apartment, Betsy? Do your friends remember you, Vanessa? Jerome?

Your turn.

What happened?! Well, Paul was busy with back to school clothes shopping, and I was taking advantage of a down day to try to fight off a cold and to do laundry and other chores that will allow me to make it through another week of being away from home and family. 6 months into this contract and I'm holding on by the skin of my teeth.

I did pick up a copy of The Princess Bride, Paula, and I'm laughing both at the book and at the memory of listening to you laugh out loud when you were reading it back in '79!

I've been (as I alluded to) swamped with work and commuting and trying to line things up for me, Miranda and Betsy to get back to College this fall. Throw in a memorial service I attended on Thursday and assisting David with painting the kids rooms and the kitchen and facilitating moving in a new fridge and range (and out with the old), and well ... suffice it to say I'm giving my all these days.

I've commited myself to making sure this is the last time I have to re-enter school - that I'm going to end up with that elusive degree. Which means for the next 1 to 2 years (not sure how long it will take - trying to re-evaluate my transfer credits) I will have limited to no time for vacations and visits. :( But I'll try my best.

Greetings from the hot and humid Great North East. Sorry not to see more of you, Betsy and Paul. Hope you had a wonderful rest of your trip. Always good to see Steve and Ana, in their true whirl wind fashion. Nice to see the William Stylos family with all their kids and grandchildren, as well as Karen, Rona, David, Naki,. Halima's son Alex, and several more of our extended family. I even had a glimpse of Melissa last weekend. Dad cooked me breakfast this morning, and I got a chance to visit, briefly, with Scott and Anne, Pam, Mark, Jerome, Vanessa, Mom and Jessamyn. Feels a little like old times. That's kind of you to say Mom, you know how I like to be remembered ... I miss you all so much - so often. But do enjoy - maybe you can toast me! Or rather, it's probably too late - well, you can share amusing Mona anecdotes over Dad's famous scrambled eggs and fresh squeezed orange juice in the morning.

I'm working pretty hard these days, but that's not really such a bad thing. Getting ready to sign up for one class in the fall - this time I'm REALLY going to finish. :) I'm taking a conservative, if determined approach. Going for a History degree. Wish me luck!

I had a fun day yesterday in Northampton. I got to see Jessamyn's new apartment and ate Dad's spaghetti sauce with the company of my parents, two brothers, one daughter, two nieces, two nephews, and one honorary family member. I played a good game of Boggle with Vanessa. I was able to see the great progress on Mark's masterpiece (the bus). We watched a beautiful thunderstorm, and I was graced with the presence of Paul and Betsy and a rainbow on my drive back to Acton. Mark drives them in on to Boston today. Now we await the arrival of yet another brother and niece. Life is pretty good.

Well, we're having kind of funny weather here in Kingston today - warm, muggy, wind blowing from the east. Not sure what to make of it. David and Miranda and I went to Mt St Helens yesterday for our first ever visit - it was really amazing.

I wanted to put out a plea to Stylos land in general -- if anyone has ideas about how to score Red Sox tickets so Betsy and Paul can complete their pilgrimage, I'm sure they (and I) would be most grateful. I've heard it's possible to buy from scalpers on the day of any given game, but I'm sure i wouldn't know how to go about it.

Happy Summertime all - make hay while the sun shines!!!

Hello to all the Stelos/Stylos family. I am in the process of moving to Florida from SF, CA and I came across two books that belonged to Mary from many years ago. Many Happy Birthday wishes to Melinda Rose from your old stomping ground at the UCL! Life goes on here. We had dinner tonight at the Bleeding Heart in the Crypt of St. Etheldreda’s, the oldest Catholic Church in England, built in the 1280 somethings. So I guess it goes on and on. The conference is very informative and is attended by an ecclectic group from all over the world. There has been lots of excitement in London, with the new government, the terrorist threats and Wimbleton. I'm going to the Concert for Diana at Wembley Park on Sunday. It appears that everyone is enjoying summer too much to spend time on their computers. It's been overcast and cool here, and I am headed east (to London) where it appears to be even more overcast and cooler. At least I won't be making the (weather) mistake I made last summer and head south into the dead of winter. I'll be back for the Fourth - enjoy, everybody!!! §

OMG and LOL!!

Never mind those silly folks ... just some ne'erdowell friends of mine.

Mark and Ana and Vanessa and Miranda just left and the campfire is dying. I had the best birthday ever. Happy news is that Betsy came home today for the summer. Happier news (for her) is that she and Paul just got tickets to fly to Boston on the 10th of July, staying for 2 weeks. I got some cleaning done, some gardening, some visiting and I was showered with gifts and affection, so, well, what could be better. Love you all - me and Miranda may find a way to make it back east later in the summer -- stay tuned.

And Jimmy, Greg, John, --- back to the looney bin with you.

An update on the Courtney-Stylos kids:

Pam, Cam and Kerry moved in to a nice new apt. in Greenfield. Cam graduates 2nd grade today! Kerry is an official Park Ranger at Mount Washington in MA.

Jeff is doing his internship in Germany for the summer and found a place to live in Heidelberg. I hope he takes lots of pictures so he can give us a slide show.

Joe is travelling/hiking....last word was from VA. Ditto on the pictures and slide show.

Melissa is living with friends in ME...near Mt Sugarloaf. They finally have internet...send her an email!

Me: same old stuff. Looking forward to seeing some MLS Styloses (MLS and MLP) as well as some Wm Stylos family in the near future.

About the written word... yes the postings here were lovely, but also I was given the original Toby Tyler Story (thank you Jess) and a book about a potter "Maria" (thank you Mom). Would you like to write me a poem Mona? Or anyone else?

And about those libations...Dad gave me a bottle of Retsina (which he does not even like) and there were some good margarita's...though now that you mention it, cosmopolitans sound pretty good.

Paula
Monday, June 04, 2007 at 20:07:35 (PDT)
well i'll tell you about some of the things mona, the jewels were a beautiful copper and bead necklace handmade by melinda, a collection of earrings on a wreath of neckties cut out from a newspaper at christmas (okay it takes me a while to get around to giving presents sometimes) draped around a beautiful tiny ficus tree, some of the libations were bottles and bottles of fabulous wines from markiboy. and did you heare about the hilarity of the wind-up bicycle races? i imagine the written word was here on this site ... a fabulous red weekend. Mona your present was a big (little) hit.

What?! No prize?!?! Harumph.

As to the mathematics/air conditioning dream ... well, yeah, the themes suggest Dad, but 2 things - the original prize money (which would have to be doubled 4 times to get to the $24,500) is such an uneven amount. And the keyword "oef" is so simillar to (but not the same as) "eof", which programs actually do search for to determine 'end of file' - makes me think not Dad.

Except that dreams have a way of skewing what you know into something that you would know is WRONG if you were actually awake.

So, with that convoluted logic I'm going to guess Dad on that one too.

mona
Friday, June 01, 2007 at 11:44:54 (PDT)
Mona wins the prize. Or she would if there were a prize.

Friday, June 01, 2007 at 05:46:14 (PDT)
A new dream, or rather a new version of a recurring dream: It's almost time for the curtain to go up on a play I have a small part in, but I have neglected to learn my lines. No one has a book because everyone else knows their lines. I think about how I could improvise, but then that would mess up everyone else's lines. It was a relief to wake up before the curtain went up.

Paula
Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at 17:11:32 (PDT)
So how about a few more guesses and then the "dreamers" can reveal themselves. I was thinking Mark Stylos. My fourth guess on the agnostic/job interview dream is dad. (Scottrick) I have no clue on the other one. This is harder than I thought. :) There are too many family members to choose from!
Pam
Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at 16:07:34 (PDT)
So, in the dream, was the first winning amount $1,531.25?
mona
Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at 13:28:46 (PDT)
Ihad a very strange dream. I was reading a report addressed to me that listed the winners of some drawing. The key was the letters"oef". AS you read the report every time you saw these letters you were a winner. But read on the next time you see them you again win only this time twice as much. This was also not the end you must continue til the end of the report. Well it happened three more times and I could not believe my good fortune. It came to 24 thousand five hundred dollars. When finished I wondered if this was not a joke but I was instructed to look in my mail box. I did and there was the money in one hundred dollar bills. As I was figuring what to do with the money I woke up as I made my first dicision. What was it and who am I. Anonymous

Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at 09:55:35 (PDT)
Does this mean I get the job? (or that I appear to be an atheist with religious sensibilities)

I would take the dream over the most recent one I can remember... I was at a restaurant, and the waitress filled up my water glass and took the rest of the bottle she was pouring from away. I drank all the water, but could not refill my glass. I spent a good deal of dream time obsessing over why she would have done that. Though I was angry at first, I eventually accepted her decision.

Sunday, May 27, 2007 at 05:35:01 (PDT)
Okay, Pam, you are on. This is a dream I had last week. I was at a job interview. I was interviewing for a position with a very religious foundation. My task was to convince them that they should hire me, a lifelong devout agnostic. I started by having them make a list of their values and matching it up to my own. They were surprised how similar that they were. I woke up before I found out if I got the job. Who am I?

Cool dream Mona...wouldn't it be funny if everyone posted a dream they had recently, interesting or not. I bet everyone would really get a kick out of matching the dreams to the personalities. Oh even better, everyone would post their dream anonymously and then we would all get a shot at matching the dream to the person.
Happy belated birthday Jess!

Homer
Thursday, May 24, 2007 at 00:28:20 (PDT)
And speaking of Socrates...this week I've been reading on Wikipedia about Socrates, Aristotle and Plato. It's amazing how much there is to learn...

I remember when I was little I moved the Encyclopedia Brittanica (sp?) into my bedroom, because I just loved getting to the end of an article, then seeing "see also..." and then rushing to look up another article. The Wiki is like that.

I had a crazy dream about the garage at 60 Montvale last night! There was this big table that looked like a pool table, and I was peeling back the layers, each green felt but with no holes for the pool balls to drop into ... until the last layer with had this cool miniature train set up. Seems it was one of Dad's projects. Which was the coolest, until I discovered the secret hidden room ...

Happy Birthday, Jessamyn! Has it really been 27 years?!? I hope the next 27 are even better. We're all proud and happy to have you in our family.

And greetings to Mark M. Welcome back to Stylosville. The sad circumstances Mark was referring was the premature death of Peter Brandon. Peter was a kind soul who will be missed by many.

Finally, I'm off to Las Vegas for a few days, but will be back Wednesday. I hope everyone is enjoying spring. Given the rainouts and delays at Fenway, I can only assume that April showers have returned. What is it that May showers bring????

Joe and Liss and I arrived safely here in Pittsburgh last night. And now we are having fun hanging out here at Jeff's house on his birthday. Pretty cool. The only thing that could make it any better is if Jeff was actually here. Happy Birthday and have fun, wherever you are young man!

If all goes as planned, I'll have seen all of my family within a two week period. Spring is in full swing here - hope it is for the rest of you as well....§

Things are pretty quiet around here with the girls in France. I trust that they are having a wonderful time - I'm relaxing while I can. I hope spring has sprung for the rest of the family like it has here. §

Heh heh...good one!

Great to see you checking in Petro!

In my corner: work is going well, slowly shaking the flu bug that attacked me this year. Weekend's half over and it's always amazing to me how much faster Saturday and Sunday go! Ah well...

Betsy goes back to Olympia tomorrow for the start of Spring Quarter. Paul has the week off. Starting to get the hang of my job and really really loving it.

Also, kind of playing with the idea of trying to make it to Hamburg for the IHS birthday party in September. Kind of a long shot at this point, but you never know. If only it wasn't at such an utterly inconvenient time of year...ah well.

Things have been busy, busy in Seattle's Eastside. The girls have been working hard at school, Vanessa has been playing soccer with the 'big kids' (ages 30 to 50) and we have had a few International students staying with us for a few days - two girls, one from Germany and one from Switzerland. Tomorrow we are going to have a belated birthday party for Vanessa at a Paintball place. Ted Reidy has been here for a few weeks and he leaves next Tuesday. Work has been pretty hectic, but should be slowing down soon. Ana and Vanessa leave for 9 days in France in two weeks. I'm going to stay home from work that week and enjoy the empty house. It sure doesn't seem like spring sprung yet here. I hope all is well with everyone!!!!

Thursday, March 22, 2007 at 17:22:35 (PDT)
My only news is that I've been home with a weird weakness/dizziness part of this week. I'm going to work today, but still not feeling very good.

Betsy is home for spring break (YAY!) and Paul has regained strength and humor, once they figured out it's migraines that have been making him feel so poorly.

Oh, and David has a new motorcycle. :)

And it's been rainy and dark and I think this early Daylight Savings Time is a really bad idea. :(

A distinct lack of news here! Did you hear about our snowstorm last Friday? That was exciting. Mark returned to the east coast safe and sound on Sunday, then I brought him out to Northampton (along with a new computer for Athena). The new downstairs kitchen in the Stately Stylos Manor is looking beautiful. I especially like the cardboard island...which is also quite functional! I hope to be given the task of making tiles for the backsplash. I am looking forward to many deicious meals in the new kitchen. What else...I hear Anne has a new job, but she (or Scott) will have to share that news...and Athena will have to share hers. Happy First day of Spring to everyone. I DID hear birds this morning.

OK, I'll start: there were 57 in person guests and 6 phone-ins adding up to 63, which, btw is an auspecious number, as it is also the year of Athena's birth!

There was singing and dancing and eating and much leftover food. Not sure, but I'm betting there was some spanking and candle blowing too...

Hello Betsy, I'm glad to know you're working hard and not complaining about it. We're just trying to stay warm and out of trouble. (The latter part is easier than the former.) We're looking forward (sorta) to getting our kitchen dismantled and then re-manteled. (Is there such a word?)No more big family dinners until there is a dishwasher in place. It was good to see your message on the board. The rest of us seem to get too lazy (or...?) sometimes. We need you young people to keep the chatter flowing. Keep smiling.

It all started last christmas when Steve rescued a juicer from Jim Boudreau's estate and gave it to Vanessa who brought it on the airplane to give to me as a christmas present. When we opened the box we found that the stand was broken as a result of inspection. I remember Vanessa sadly expressed her sorrow. It was a good christmas anyway. However recently Ramona contacted the manufacturer who asked her to send a picture of the juicer. Scott took the picture and Ramona sent it to the manufacturer. A week later the new juicer arrived and yesterday we had grapefruit juice which was great and pulpless. The grapefruit was a little too big to fit on the cone of the juicer and we decided it would work better with oranges. Then unbeknownst to each other Ramona and I both made a trip to Atkins farm and bought oranges. The strange thing is there four or five different kinds of oranges and we both bought the same kind. Well this morning I squeezed some orange juice and I am here to tell you it was spectucular. And now I will always tnink of Vaneesa and be ever grateful every time I drink the nectar of the oranges. P.S.

So, it seems as if everyone is safe and sound at home. I just got back from a mini one night vacation in Boston with Melinda. We had lots of fun cooking, shopping, watching a great DVD, and weatherproofing her bedroom. I hope you are all enjoying the beautiful sunny weather as much as I am. Well, I'm at the airport waiting to board the flight to Seattle. That was the longest 3 and an half day trip I ever remember having. Both NY and SF were fun and I had a delicious dinner with Sophie. She is working hard and seems to be enjoying what she is doing. Me, I'm looking forward to a relaxing weekend in Seattle. I have to rest up for my vacation - I'm off to Mexico for 10 days on Wednesday. I hope everyone is well and I hope that it is warmer in Massachusetts than it was in NYC. Hang in there - Spring is on the Way!!!!

I am back in Northampton and I'm working on develping a more positive attitude toward cold weather. I had a wonderful 2 weeks in Arizona with Pat and Ken. The flight home was uneventful (as we like them to be) and I was met by Paul and Jess. Now to get on with the unpacking, and getting caught up with stuff.

Steve, I hope you're enjoying your travel and events this week. Give our best to Sophie.

Things have been back to normal here in Bellevue. The mild weather is back, and brought the rain with it. Ana and Vanessa have started a new semester in school and seem to be working hard. Mark is busy remodeling and taking care of business. I'm on my way to another week of travel (NY and San Francisco). I'll be having dinner with Sophie in San Francisco on Thursday night. Then next week we are off to Mexico for mid-winter break. We are all ready for a break from the weather and the grind. We hope you had a nice time in Arizona, Mom! You should be ready to start packing up for your trip home if my inner clock is still working....

Sounds like fun!!!

David's finishing Round 3 of his short order breakfast cook duties. Paul works later this afternoon and Betsy will be heading back to school, and Miranda will be watching the Big Game with her in-laws, but for now they're all here! Must say, I love days like this.

A Prairie Home Companion is having their annual joke show!! I catch myself laughing out loud more than is seemly. I'm set to take over the second shift of all day food preparation (and consumption) and intermittant commercial and football watching.

We are now closer to the start of Spring than the start of Winter and the days gain in sunlight. Good thing.

If you're hungry and in the neighborhood stop by!!

What a lovely weekend here in Northampton. Melinda and I came in on Saturday at noon. We had a great lunch with Jessamyn and Ben, and then hung out in town. Visited Athena at the theater, then had a wonderful spaghetti dinner, cooked by Dad. Jessamyn, Melinda and I had a pajama party with Dad which was great fun. This morning I dropped Melinda off at the bus station, and then back to Jessamyn's for a delicious brunch with Scott, Dad, Joe, Melissa, Ben, Jess and me. Poor Athena, who dreamed up this brunch plan, is home sick in bed. Now Melissa and Jessamyn are off to the famous a cappella sing off (they will have to give you the details). Great time, great family.

yay cold! I'd hate for my heavy investment in cashmere to go to waste ... hope everyone is tucked in warmly somewhere ... my news is that as of today i am taking calculus two (taught by someone i took math from nineteen years ago (!)) and "the home as a work of art" (an art history course taught by valija). here's wishing myself good luck on my newest semester at smith! Hope everyone's year is off to a good start. Hi dad! sorry i missed the baby backs! And yes it is good that the weather challenges us all. You're out in it somewhere i know because i'm at your house and you're not here. Hi mom! Eat a grapefriut for me!

not long ago we were all saying how warm the weather was. Now the chorus is that it is too cold. Isin't good that nature challenges us all. PS

All is well here in Minnesota, except that it is way too cold. It's been a grueling week, but it is almost over. I'll be back in Seattle tomorrow night. I'll fill you all in when it is over....

Let's see: Mark and Mona in Seattle, Mom in Arizona, Steve in Minnesota, Dad, Scott and Athena in Northampton, me here in Acton...one of us is in a warm place and eating fruit. What is wrong with the rest of us? Hope all is well, Steve. Oh, and yes, Jessamyn's luggage found it's way home shortly after she did.

Glad all is well.

Thinking of you (((Steve))) and hoping they're finding the optimum results in the battery of tests. The Northwest misses you. :)

Yes, I'm enjoying being in Arizona with Pat and Ken. The flight was uneventful and MY luggage arrived with me. Peoria (where we are) is recovering from the cold snap that damaged a lot of the vegetation. People had to pick oranges and grapefruit off the trees ahead of the drop in temperature, so now we're helping to eat it all up. Love to all.

Hello to Mom out west! Hope you're having fun.

It's feeling a little weird here. Last night we were surrounded by most of our kids and some of our grandchildren. Tonight they have all gone their separate ways and it's just the 2 or us (again).
It has been very cold here, inside as well as outside. Today the furnace man came and tweaked the furnace and sure enough, the temperature is going up.
In five days I will be leaving for Arizona to spend 2 weeks with Pat and Ken. Maybe the snow will have come and gone by the time I get back. Even if it's still around, we can start looking forward to spring.
I'm trying not to complain (I really am). I know this has been a very mild winter so far, by New England standards. It's just that I love the warm sunshine!
Mark, sorry you had to spend more time in Newark than you wanted to. I think you'll be happy to get back to the comforts of Bellevue. And Vanessa will be happy to see her Papa.
Mona, bon voyage. Has it really been 2 weeks a'ready? We were happy to have you here, and I'm sure your family will be happy to have you back.
Love to all.

And welcome to Mark, who is in the airplane, headed back to Seattle. He's not on a flight that left quite as early as he had hoped, but he will be here before bedtime.

And just in time for the snow that has been on the ground since Mona left to have melted. This has been the most extreme weather season in the 30 years that I have been here. An inconvenient truth, to be sure.

I hope that everyone is enjoying the New Year. It's been a nice one in Seattle. §

Welcome home, Mom! Welcome back, Mark. Bon voyage, Jessamyn. How is the vacation going, Mona. So much to keep track of, and so little information getting posted here. What is up with that?

I will be heading back to the chilly northeast tomorrow. I have had a lovely vacation as I always do with Jill. It will be hard to leave the summer-like weather behind, as well as all the flowers and tropical vegetation. I am grateful for the cell phones that make it possible to keep up with everything and everybody from wherever I may be.
I'm looking forward to seeing Mark and Mona, as well as The Lord of the Manor. (4:12, USAir.)

For the record: I am not in my sixties! But I am here at Paula's, and happy to be so - Athena is set to show up in a few minutes. I had a very good, fast, easy flight (after an initial scare: my original flight was delayed 6 hours, but they got me out on another airlines). And dad was there to meet me, as promised. We took the scenic route to Paula's, I got a grand tour of the new deck and a whirlpool bath!! (thanks Jess!)

Anyway ... where the heck is the SNOW?!?!

I am enjoying the tropical weather of Tequesta,
Florida and the good company of Jill and Don. Right now I am wondering whether Mona is landing in Boston. It's about that time.
Take care of things for me, Mona. I'll be home in a week.

Paul became a licensed driver today (thanks Steve!!), and we are all ready to enter the next phase: Betsy back to Olympia for her 2nd quarter, Paul able to drive himself to school and his job and me for a "just to visit" visit to Massachusetts...see you soon Dad!

Greetings for a very Happy New Year to all of my friends and family. Things have settled down to a dull roar here, with the girls going back to school in the morning and me going back to work. The weather here for the year seems like last year - rainy and windy. At least the days seem to be getting a bit longer. Six and a half more weeks and we will be headed south of the border. It's looking more and more enticing!!! Thanks to all for being there for me! §

We are proud to announce that Vanessa has arrived safe and sound, if not a bit tired. Mark and Sophie, we have been trying to call you but get weird messages on the phone. Since they are in French, you will have to ask Vanessa what they mean. We are happy to have Vanessa back. Two more days until we go back to school and work!!! §
