Vanessa, if you saw fireworks as you flew high above the continent USA, know that they were in celebration of your return.

Best wishes to family and friends for a good 2007!

I second Mom's sentiments. It was nice, as always, to be with the family at the holidays. But Mom said it best when she said that seeing Ricky was the highlight of the season. Thanks for making the effort, Eric, I promise it won't be 30 years this time. And thanks to all who made our trip to the east coast so pleasant and painless!!!

We are back home after a delightful Christmas at Paula and Mark's house in Acton. There was food, gifts, fire in the fireplace, domino games and a welcome surprise visit from our old friend from Montvale Road, Eric Ingbar. So much fun talking about old times and people we used to know in Newton Centre. We are missing Steve and Ana who stayed in Acton and will fly back to Seattle tomorrow. Also missing Mark and Mona and their families in France and Kingston, WA. I hope everyone had as good a Christmas as we did.

Hi Mark!
Reading the message board, I figured you had recently returned to France. I left my number for anyone else who may care to give me a jingle (ho, ho). Can't guarantee I could get out to western Mass., but I could try. The rest of my family is all on the coast of California, for reasons too lengthy to explain (but not bad things like divorce, death, or disaster). So, it's just me on this trip. I'm the worst part of the bargain when it comes to my family, but so be it.

Hey Ricky! Well, the geography does not work for me: I am in France, but there is a Western Mass Contingent around. Happy Holidays to you, your brothers and your Mom.

Well, here I am in Cambridge at my mom's, and just got off the phone with Peter Lewitt. So, naturally, my thoughts turned to the Stylos family...

If time, geography, and your schedules allow perhaps I could drop in to say hello (to those of you who remember me)?

In any case, best wishes and happy holidays to the WHOLE family.

Hey, remember the candy houses we used to make? With Hershey squares for roof tiles. And we used to make ourselves ill, licking our fingers during assembly?? Or was that just me...

Anyway, thanks, Mom, for a great memory!! Love all you silly Styloses!

Thanks for the birthday messages everybody. We had a great birthday dinner here on Holyoke Street (thanks Mom!). Now everbody is playing dominoes at the dinner table. A very nice day, all in all, despite having to go to work.

Still a very mild winter without any snow, so far. I wouldn't mind if it stayed that way, but I know winter will find us before too long. Hopefully not before everyone has done all their holiday travelling.

Les meilleurs voeux, everybody!

Thanks to all of my wonderful family for the kind thoughts and birthday greetings. I'm writing from work, since I am not sure if I will have the internet when I get home. It has been a productive day at work, and I have felt the support from many co-workers and friends. I'm very much looking forward to spending Christmas in Boston with most of you.

Sophie, I loved hearing about Jerome's laughter. I'm sure that it is great for all of you to be reunited for the holidays. You should be very proud of Vanessa and the way that she is handling her year in the US. I think it has been good for all of us.

I'm on my way to pick up Ana and go out to a birthday dinner. Thanks again to all of you for being my family!!! §

No, me! I wanna be on t-o-o-o-p!!!

OK, overdue update:

Our trip to Hawaii was absolutely fabulous and I don't know how I'm going to stand it till I can go back again! The balmy breeze, smelling of sweet flowers like plumeria and ginger...the warm ocean waves - beauty absolutely everywhere you look. Fruit and ukelele music. Oh, and we had a great time at the concert we were going for too. Not to mention just some time alone together - really quite what the doctor ordered.

Betsy is home for winter break, and we're sure loving having her around again. Paul is working hard -- seems like all the time. At least it seems that way to him. :)

Miranda lost power in the recent storm and has been fretting about keeping the snakes alive till the heat comes back on. But other than that she's doing great!

And I got braces put on last week. I'm sure I'll be glad I did, but right now, well....I really miss chewing!

Love you all - hopes all's well in your various worlds!

I did indeed turn 18 last weekend! I've been busy with my final project this past week, but thank you all for your birthday wishes! At 12 midnight on my birthday, my friends brought in a cake with 18 candles, and two bottles of sparkling cider. It was such a nice surprise. My parents made it back from Hawaii, and seemed to have had a wonderful time! Thanks again!

p.s. Paula and Athena: I have used my toolbox so much since i have been here, so handy! THANKS

love,

Must have been a slow week for everyone! I will start the news flowing. Melinda arrived safely (though very slowly) from Spain last Saturday. She and Jessamyn will be coming here this afternoon to go cut down a christmas tree. Athena is coming tomorrow to continue with our home improvement project. I had a lovely dinner earlier in the week with Mom, Dad and Scott as I do most Mondays. (What a great ritual that is.) Looking forward to seeing Vanessa and Mark, however briefly. Then Steve and Ana. When exactly should we be expecting you all? Are the December birthday boys busily planning their bashes? Did Mona return from Hawaii? Did Betsy really turn 18? I patiently await YOUR news.

We had a lovely Thanksgiving here in Chicago. Yes, Mark and Vanessa joined us. Vanessa learned the meaning of Thanksgiving - thanks for giving us frequent flier miles. We are all flying into Seattle tomorrow, just in time to pick up Ana at the airport (she will be coming in from Lake Tahoe). I am truly thankful for my great family and my wonderful friends. And yes, Melinda, I would love to join you in Andalucia. Be sure to go to the Alhambra! See you at Christmas!!!

Yes, happy thanksgiving to all of you. Sorry I am not there to join you, but I am pretty content. My friend and I just took a walk by the ocean and saw Africa from afar. Madrid was fun, your average big city as Mark had warned me, Barcelona was beautiful with its magical art nouveau buildings, but the mountains of Andalucia are truly enchanting. We drove up one of the taller ones and had a picnic in the clouds. Come join me?

I can answer for Miranda: she is currently sans internet connection.

I got to see her for lunch (after my orthodontic appointment!) and for dinner! She is just breathtakingly beautiful these days, which I'm sure is no surprise to any of you.

True to the historic record, November 7 was a truly wet and windy day. But unlike Novemeber 7 1984, the election outcome was much more hopeful.

I am now, once again, unemployed and starting to turn my focus to other aspects of my life - I hope to be able to post more regularly and fully in the near future.

Oh yeah, and Ping and I will be headed for the wonderful Hawaiian Islands in December for a quick honeymoon/25th anniversary/Pearl Jam jaunt!!! Yay!!!

Yes, very Happy Birthdays to two very wet 11/7'ers! It's wetter here than it has been in decades. Miranda, aren't you glad you didn't wait two more months to get married? I woke up thinking about that day 15 years ago when I called you to tell you that you would be sharing your birthday. How rude to wake a seven year old up at 6:00 a.m.! well we got dad's new computer desk in and it is as joey says command central. We had to do some juggling around (and tricky maneuvering to get it in the door. Paula would be proud. Now all he needs is a persian rug and twice as many square feet and it will be perfect. Come over for some grape juice and football!

Hi, Stylos clan! My sister and I spent some hours at Northhampton a week or so ago, and enjoyed our visit and the beautiful Autumn day. Ramona, I'm still struggling with the dopey crochet, and I finally made a bearly passable chain. I did make the carrot soup successfully from my old Moosewood. (Next week, a batch for lauren.) Thanks for the wonderful companionship. It was so good to meet you, Jess. Hugs.

Thursday, September 07, 2006 at 11:22:19 (PDT)
Dad - I hope you remember to give Pathy my very best regards! I'm glad you arrived safely, and easily too I hope.

I am so very glad that we had that wonderful time together, and such a happy excuse to get together! I love and treasure each and everyone, and the ones who couldn't make it too...you were missed, for sure.

I had so much more fun at the wedding itself than I expected too, and less anxiety, for some odd reason. Could it be...

The mounds of help I got from everyone. And the mixed play and work time I had with my 2 best sisters! (((((Paula and Athena))))))

And huge thanks too, to Scott, for making this trip at a most inconvenient time -- I know I didn't tell you how important it was to me to have you with us, so I hope you know it anyway. And thanks for the great job on the pictures -- there are some real doozies there! I love the one of Miranda and Jason dancing -- I've personally captioned it The Look of Love, and it makes me happy to see it.

Last thing - I send my congratulations to our beautiful Miranda and handsome Jason -- I'm glad to see you so happy and wish you many years of more of the same! Mazaltov!

Yes, I arrived back in MA more or less on time, though one bag did not. I hope it arrives sometime as it had 2 pair of shoes in it, and I had already left one pair at Mona's. Scott met me at Bradley and now he's packing for his next trip. Things seem fine here, including the flowering plants. (Thanks, Jess.)

It was a very good trip. Wouldn't have missed it for anything. Besides the lovely wedding and sumptious reception, there were good visits at the homes of Pat, Mona and Steve. (We have a gazillion photos to remember it all by.) Thanks, Miranda for having an occasion worth traveling across the country for!

Good work, Jeromeo. Seattle is not as nice of a place when you are not in it! And everyone else who has graced us with their presence for the past week or so. Vanessa and Ana are on their way for the first day of high school (we will know within a day or two whether they will let Vanessa start early); Scott, Mark, Paula and Athena are safely back in Massachusetts; Dad is on his way to San Francisco (or will be as soon as the train leaves) and Mom will be here until tomorrow. Ana and Vanessa looked mature, confident and excited. It was great to have everyone here. Ana pointed out that Miranda had the first Stylos wedding since 1988. In the pictures of my wedding, Miranda was the youngest. My, how time flies. §

Another beautiful morning here in Tent City. Did I tell you about the lobsters that David had flown in for us? Did I tell you about our drive to the beautiful Pacific Ocean? Or watching Betsy ride her horse so majestically? Not to mention Paul's quick wit, and getting to "catch up" with Pat and Liam. Today, of course, is the big day. David is off getting a haircut, and the house is all waking up to the excitement of the day. Thanks to everyone who has made this week such a blast. (Oh, and did I say that Athena gets to be the bell-ringer, and I her proud assistant? I am thinking that may mean holding her up so she can reach the rope....) Congratulations, Miranda, on your day.

Friday, September 01, 2006 at 00:01:10 (PDT)
Hi Seattle! Last night I went to stay at Stately Stylos Manor to water the plants and because I knew it had been empty too long; and what to my wondering eyes had appeared but Ann, Melissa, Joey, Pam, Kerry and Cameron. It was as if we all wanted to be crowded together in one place too. We ate Food Bank Farm watermelon and entertainment was shown in all three theaters. Upstarirs featured the Amy Tan Classic "The Joy Luck Club" Baseball glowed from the living room downstairs, and Joey and I watched an eclectic assortment of shows that I am sure have never graced the high definition theater before. So please, stop dragging your feet and sobbing into pillows with the throbbing pity you feel for us 3,000 miles from the festivities. Don't keep staying at home because you are too guilty to enjoy yourselves without us. And most of all keep the packages of home made food, swatches of fancy fabrics and baseball tickets you are about to send. We will get through the jealousy together.

Love from three hours ago,
Massachusetts

Another morning in the tent for me and Athena. We are trying very hard not to have fun, but there is only so much cooking and cleaning one can do in a tent! OK, you talked me into it:

Posting of morning number 2 here at tent city. We were all at the game yesterday (except Mom), but it did not seem to help the Red Sox. Or maybe they were just disappointed that Mom did not show up. Or maybe it was because we were graced by the presence of cousin Chris and Ken, and that confused them. In any case it was great fun, and then Aunt Pat and Mom fed us all with their well known Southern Hospitality. Happy Birthday today to my most wonderful father. Party tonight at Steve's so we can honor him in whatever humble way we can...steaks? hot fudge sundays? hot tub? We love you Dad.

As some of you may know, we had a fun filled week-end here in Acton with a combination Clean Sweep/What Not to Wear with Athena and her wardrobe. It was not only lots of fun, but highly successful! Not counting her accessories (and what wonderful accessories they are) she let go or 331 articles of well loved clothing, and kept the 312 that met the approval of the panel consisting Paula, Jessamyn, Melinda, Papi, and occasionally Mark. Amazing, Athena. We are all proud, and can't wait to see you in your newly discovered/uncovered outfits. We love you!

Happy Birthday, Paul! I hope this is the best one yet. Driving age are you? Watch out, world!

Ana and I are enjoying Peru immensely. Today we rented a cab all day ($65) and visited six sets of Inca ruins around Cusco. Very impressive. And yes, we have been taking pictures. The weather has been very pleasant, high sixties, some sun, no rain. We head to Macho Picchu tomorrow. Then back to Lima for a few days before heading north. We are traveling with a friend of Ana's and her Dad. Dads and Daughters. Hope all is well with all there.

Wow, Peru. I cannot wait to hear those stories, Steve, and to see the photos...hint. Hard to believe winter exists somewhere. Greetings from Peru! And from Winter! I knew it was going to be winter, so I brought some warm clothes, however, I totally forgot that it would be dark long before dinnertime. Things are very nice here, the people are warm and the food is great. I'll be heading to Cusco tomorrow to meet Ana and go see Macho Picchu. We'll be back in Seattle next weekend. At least I will. Ana will be back a week from tomorrow. Hope all is well for all of you.

Today I got a call from Beverly (Layne Barakat Read) and Barry, the new owners of Layne Laurel Lodge. They were on their way to the Charlotte airport after having spent a week in the cabin. They report "a wonderful time" and no problems they couldn't solve. I feel good that the cabin is in good hands. With Noah living in NC I'm sure it will be well looked after. Bev and Barry were headed back to CA, then tomorrow on to Ashland, OR to the Shakespeare festival and another stop of two before Alexa Layne's wedding. They sure keep the road (and the air) hot. I envy them their energy.

Tomorrow we will be joining Paula and daughters at Erving State Forest, where we used to camp as a family. They are already there and have the tent set up, so if predicted showers come tonight, they will be snug and dry.

Scott has spent much of the wekend shoring up the Stately Stylos Manor, and it is looking more "stately" all the time. It's great having Pam and Melissa dropping in frequently. (And also Athena and Jessamyn). And last week Joey took a little detour from the Appalachian trail and came to Northampton before resuming his 6-month trek on The Trail. (One more month to go, more or less. Great going, Joey, (or Fast Layne as he is known on the Trail.)

...hmmm, no that doesn't sound quite right. How about - thank you so much for making me feel great. And Scott - good job! (but by now you've realized how easy it is to do a rainbow. on the internet anyway)

Yesterday I got a real rainbow on the ferry ride to work. I had lunch at a wonderful, garlicky Lebanese restaurant with some of the great people I work with. I left right after lunch and drove home, got to see the new Tacoma Narrow bridge, almos ready for it's bridge deck. Then David, Miranda and I went in to Kingston to our favorite delicious food joint. It was great to have her to ourselves for a bit! Topped off with an evening of DJ Dave.

Thank you for the well wishes and the kind words. I love you all!

Aw shucks. Thank you all for such compliments and outpouring of affection, sent just to me in cyberspace. I had a truly wonderful birthday. I did eat lobster, for those of you wondering...delicious. I did throw away my usual number of articles of clothing equal to my age (which, by the way, is also the same as the year I as born this time around). I had lovely presents, and the presence of a brother, sister, husband and daughter. (My other daughter graced me with her presence very early and very late). Happppppppy Birthday Paulala !!!!!

Many, many thanks to the one who makes this board, as well as many other Stylos GetTogethers, possible. Thanks for being such a good Big Sister !

As for all those Milanos ... I can BE in Milano in just a couple hours drive. Finding the Mint Milano's once there is a whole 'nother endeavor.

Our summer plans are shaping up here: Arriving Boston on the 15th of July, with a departure on the 4th of September. Vanessa will be in Seattle / Summer Camp for the last two weeks in August, returning to Boston on the 3rd of September. Still trying to figure out a way to get Jerome and I out that way for the BIG WEDDING.

Though Summer is well along here already, we did have snow in the mountains less than 10 miles away the other day. An interesting spectacle on my way to work ...

Well, good for Joe and good for Liss. Apparently she took the high road and will leave Scotland before Joe.

Things are nice and springlike in Seattle. We are all excited to be receiving lots of family members in August and September. It's shaping up to be a nice summer. Ana gets home on June 22, then will be in camp with Vanessa from August 14 - 28. I'm very much looking forward to having her home.

I hope all is well with everyone else...§

Thanks for writing, Jerome. Your great family is looking forward to your coming to the US, too. Right now Grandfather is watching a ballgame, Paula and Jess have gone to the grocery store, Scott is working in his new garden and I, well, you know what I'm doing. Athena is working at the theatre.

Keep writing on the message board because it makes us all happy.

Just another Happy Friday post!

I'm looking forward to the three day weekend with no real plans but to spend time at home, maybe make some progress in cleaning out the garage and making room for guests. :)

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a camping outing to Mt Rainier for a couple of days, in the week before Miranda's wedding....That would be like, right around Dad's birthday. There is a great group site I could reserve if there's any interest. I know I will be in need of a little fresh air and peace and quiet right about that time, and the weather is always fabulous....just a thought.

No other real news - Betsy is making graduation plans (nad is tardy in sending out announcements....don't know where she gets that trait. Work is work. 'Nuff said!

Love to all!

It's about time someone posted something. I guees I'm it. Well, here in Northampton the weather has warmed up and sunshine is predicted for the events of the weekend; on Sunday a graduation party for CJ Jennings (practically an adopted member of the family) and then on Monday a BIG yard sale at Jess and Ben's house. We are all unloading lots of things we once needed, or thought we needed and now are just in the way. We still have lots of unopened boxes but we are set up for housekeeping and could even put up a guest or two. We are really enjoying living "among family".

Somebody (maybe me?) should report on the happy time we had last evening celebrating Jessamyn's 25th birthday. The birthday cake was a chocolate spice, made by Paula and Melinda, the ice cream was furnished by Grandfather Paul and the fudge sauce on top was make by Ben, under Athena's tutelage. After that was done away with we played CRANIUM and it was all very hilarious, with Ben as prize winning "hummer". (You have to know the game to understand that part.)

The sun finally came out after 9 days of so of rainy weather after after our move to MA. We are getting more and more settled every day. (Some important things still haven't been found, but that will happen eventually, I trust.) The remainder of our shipment (including the ride-on mower is due--or promised--to arrive tomorrow.)

I get nostalgic when I hear from my friends in NC, but all in all, I'm content. I look forward to seeing some (many, all?) of the extended family as summer approaches.

Greetings from Northampton,MA, our new home. We had a delicious Mother's Day dinner today with Scott and Anne, Paula and Jess (who did most of the cooking) and Athena. It is great to have so many of the family around on a holiday. And from those we are not around there were telephone conversations. I'm feeling like a very lucky mother tonight.

Now the weather, that's something else. . .And no end (to the rain) in sight. I hear that Seattle and Portland have taken all the sunshine. Well, we can't begrudge them that since the wet stuff is what they usually get. Maybe by the time we have unpacked all our many (too many) boxes it will be warm and sunny again, like the day we arrived.

If we have not been reporting in it's because we were without internet capability. It's good to be back online. We are also getting email again. (Same address). Hope to be seeing many of the extended family soon.

Happy Birthday Melissa!!!

I was over in Germany working as a Dienst Madchen on my 18th birthday! And at the start of that cycletour trip Kerri Klugman and I went 40 hours without sleep -- flew in to Luxembourg, then the train to Oostende, ferry to Folkstone, train to London, only to arrive just as the youth hostel was kicking folks out for the day -- I do recall grabbing a catnap in the library at Paddington....man, that was a lifetime ago.

Anyway, I'd love to hear more about this Scottish adventure -- sounds amazing. And who's Maggie?

This spring has been so full -- ordering wedding invitations, putting up the hem on Betsy's satin gown, working on college entry paperwork, hit the 100 mile mark on the treadmill :) ... and it's FRIDAY! Love you all,

mona

Happy Greek Easter to you too! Sounds as if Steve, Mona and cousin Dave all celebrated in great style. Glad you are enjoying France, Steve, and glad you are getting ready for me, Mona. Athena, Melinda and I went to Eleanor Leblanc's show at her house in Weymouth yesterday. It was great to see her (and Ralph, Ondine and Marsha), and to see the great art she has been making. All seemed well, and we got treated like royalty. Less than 2 weeks until the parental celebrities arrive. Yipee!

Good work, David! Christos Anesti (sp??)!

It is an incredibly gorgeous spring day here -- my first two Rhododendrons are blooming, the grass has had it's 3rd mowing. The first round of Corry's Slug and Snail Death has been applied, and I even managed to transplant a couple of takeaways I got from Heronswood (in 2004) at long last.

Betsy and I went to a concert last night that was really great and really strange - I had won tickets through a radio show, and it was a promotional deal for a major fake coffee creamer product, and they wanted us to cheer for this putrid concoction....to become corporate shills, as it were. Did not sit well with my beautiful idealistic daugther.

But the venue was great (the Sky Church at the Experience Music Project). The crowd was intimate (supposedly only 300 pairs of tickets), and the talent was fantastic (Jason Mraz).

Today we finish the Prom Gown!! And start preparing some living/sleeping quarters for our anticipated Wedding Guests! Full of dreams and plans and high hopes on this Greek Easter Sunday!

Love to you all! Tell me about your day!

Happy Easter everyone, everywhere....(especially you lucky ones in France). We are celebrating with new traditions (or soon to be traditions) this year. We are making Greek Easter Bread with red eggs, and are having a new kind of hunt. We decided to skip the eggs, skip the chocolate, and go straight to money! As soon as those lovely kids of mine are ready, we will dash downstairs and search for the small fortune hidden there. (Sure hope the Easter bunny has heard about this new plan...otherwise, what will we find? small change in the couch corners?) Love to you all.

...oh so wrong: no hangovers were involved. Although we did see a show that spoke of 9 hangovers in 72 hours! We were in Greenville, where we spent the evening in town, taking in dinner and a show: Desperate Houseflies. It was permagrin inducing, side splitting funny!

Then I caught the shuttle to the airport (though the driver locked the keys in the mini-van thing he was picking us up in - still I got to the plane in time). I arrived in Seattle by 10:30, David picked me up at the airport, Betsy picked me up at the ferry and I was sweetly napping by 1!!

Thanks Dad and Mom and Paula and Athena for the bed, the orange juice, the games, the talks, the walks, the space to say goodbye to the cabin and for one of the most memorable (in a good way) trips I have ever taken!

...almost made me forget about my school dilemma!

Happy Spring everyone out there!!!

Joe starts his hike of the Appalachian Trail today! Starting at Springer Mt. in Georgia, 2160 miles to Maine. Should take about 5 months. Go Joe!

THIS JUST IN:
The parts are being ordered and the car should be fixed within a few hours. The irony is that the damage was done when the car underwent extensive repairs a week ago. Apparently, the last place steam cleaned the car for free and ended up "steam-cleaning the engine as well." Mama and Athena are biding their time in Border's book store awaiting the opening of a Marshell's next door. That's all for now.

Mama and Atena left Athena's house bright and early at seven in the morning; good thing too since they only got as far as Enfield Connecticut before the check engine light went on. The troops are drinking hot chocolate and remain in good spirits in the face of adversity. Yaya and Buddy, tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree and being them home safe. More to follow.

Our web did not work for a while but we got it repaired for Vanessa's B-day. I am proud that Vanessa has been selected to play football on the "feminine team of the riviera". She is going to spend next week-end in Marseille without any of her parents. She had spent a week skiing and had a great time of course with her mates. Jerome is going to spend a few days in Corsica with his football team and on to an historyc tour of Arles and Nimes with his classmates. They enjoy their school and made new friends. Jerome speaks mostly English with his friends. I worked for the last six month and off again now, till April, so I hope. I was very moved to read Paul's lovely poem, Thank you, It is beautiful and I will always remember you and Vanessa walking along the "promenade des Anglais" in Nice when she was only 18 month old.
Wishing the best to all of you

Wow, Athena! Forty-two guests. Including you, that makes 43. They say when planning birthday parties for kids, you should plan on as many people as the years that are being celebrated. Glad to see you are keeping up the tradition.

Dad, i wish you were at ALL my parties (and soon you will be) steve, i will check message board much more often once i am not on my hermitage in the country any more and am staying at the stately stylos m., mona, mom and dad look forward to seeing you in a few weeks. Mark sophie vanessa jerome and ana, thank you for the bundled message, its`s homey (if not striclty accurate) to imagine all of you gathered around the computer.Jessamyn! thank you for all the help, in fact paula`s entire family slaved away in the kitchen (luckily in my westhamptin house you can be in the kitchen and still be at the party) And thanks to ben for bringing a quiche that kept the first people from starving i hear it was yummie. Lots of family members came, jessamyn melinda paula mark scott anne pam cam and kerri (how do you spell kerrie kery kerry?) there were so many family member there that people started asking my friends carol and leo if they were my parents (which i think delighted them rather than otherwise, even though they are a decade younger than the genuine article.) But who`s counting. I was. Forty two guests. Thanks for all the birthday good will. It was a good year to have a great party. Now spring is coming, and i got through my first glimpses of johnny damon wearing pinstripes (and oh so cleanshaven he must be shaving minutes before each appearance) sitting on the couch next to papi, my nearest and dearest yanquies fan. Well, I made it back to Seattle. Many thanks to Leigh who took care of Lucky for the past month and picked me up at the airport. And many thanks to Mark and Eszter, who have been taking care of me for the past month.

Ana looks great and seems very comfortable to be home and comfortable to be living away from home. I went to the hip doctor today and got a clean bill of health - so it is back to the grindstone for me tomorrow. Sounds like quite a snowstorm in NYC. We didn't see any in Chicago, although it was quite cold when I left.

All in all, life is good and it is good to be home....§

Only got about 4 or 5 inches of snow here, but it was enough to try out the snowblower. I never used one before, so it's going to take a lot of getting use to. There are a lot of controls....each hand has to do several things at once. But I'll get the hang of it eventually. Sounds like the eastern part of the state got hit pretty good!

Paula, You really don't know Sudoku? Then look up www.sudoku.com and get in-the-know. When I was in Florida Jill and Don were so much into Sudoku that once I saw how addictive it was, I had to teach them JOTTO to get them into something a little more "social". (Sudoku is a solitary activity.) We even devised a way to play a three-way game of JOTTO.

Thursday, February 09, 2006 at 14:43:12 (PST)
Well, it has been three weeks since the surgury and there have been no surprises. It seems that my recovery is going slower than I expected, but then again, it seems like a lot more than three weeks. All of this time on my back is getting pretty boring. At least I have discovered Su Doku, as has the rest of the country. I managed to sit down through a three hour dinner last night, so things are looking up.

I leave for Minnesota for a few days tomorrow, then leave for Seattle on Monday. I will arrive there two days after Ana, who will be there for two weeks. It will be nice to be in my own home and sleep in my own bed, but it has been a nice visit/rehab in Chicago. I hope everyone else is doing well, too....

The Sieve of Eratosthenes gives you all the prime numbers between 2 and n, when you supply n. It's cool.

There's a big wind storm blowing through the region (160,000 without power - still!), and we're stuck at home with each other. What a pity............................ NOT!

I'm using David's laptop, which has it's own internet connectivity, and we're running through a generator. Listening to A Prairie Home Companion, waiting for the sun to set...all snug and happy to have each other (although lots of Saturday plans have been cancelled). I'll keep you posted, probably. :)

mona
Saturday, February 04, 2006 at 16:34:19 (PST)
Mona, what is the Sieve of Whoever or What ever or Wherever? Does anybody else know? I don't. Why is your power out? Is it only your house or your whole region?

I am home from my 9 days in Florida. It was a very pleasant visit with Jill. Now to get to work. . .

Too bad the groundhog saw his shadow :(

But if 6 more weeks of winter is all we get around here, I'll be happy.

Apparently he sees his shadow more than 85% of the time, down there in Punxatawny.

But anyway, with my new 10 horsepower snowblower I'm ready for anything.

Should be an exciting Superbowl this year. Here's hoping your team wins!

Steve, you walked a mile? Wonderful! I'm glad you're staying in Chicago for a while longer. Thank goodness for the cell phone, the email and fax machine!
I am in Tequesta, Florida (west of North Palm Beach) where it just started to rain! It's a warm rain, though and I'm still hoping for some beach weather before I return to NC on Saturday.
It's fun being with Jill. She'll be down here another 2 months.
How is 2006 going for the rest of you?

Ramona
Monday, January 30, 2006 at 08:14:20 (PST)
Well, things with the new hip seem to be progressing as well as can be expected. I walked a mile or so outside yesterday with my crutch, and can walk around the house without a crutch or cane. Tomorrow my physical therapy will start focusing on walking without help and without a limp.

I have decided to stay in Chicago for a few more weeks. Since it will be that long before I can really sit down, I would be working from home anyway. It is just as easy to work across the country these days as it is to work across town. The worst thing about staying in Chicago will be missing Superbowl week in Seattle.

I had a nice talk with Ana who is now back at the dorm after finishing a week-long internship working in an American bookstore. Apparently she liked living with uncle Mark and eating spaghetti every night.

Thanks to everyone who keeps sending positive energy my way. Know that I am on the mend......

Actually, I thought I did post a message last night after the game announce my arrival....It must have been the exhuberance induced by either the Seahawks or the narcotics or both. Things seem to be progressing as expected - I am down to walking with either on crutch or a cane. I don't think I will win many races anytime soon, though. It's a sunny beautiful day in Chicago, although I have no idea what the temperature is.

Thanks to all of those who have been offering me support. I try to continue to keep you posted....

Well, it sounds like that new house of Scott's is quite the hit! I'd guess I had better hurry up and add a Potter's Studio there, so we will all have a place to stay! Guess it is too late to call dibs ...

I'm glad Mom and Dad liked it. It sure will eliminate a lot of driving in the summer's when we visit. When they get tired of us, it will just be a walk up to the next place!

All our thoughts are going out to Steve. I don't remember the date that he was scheduled to go under the knife is, but I hope Mark Wight (or better yet, Eszter) can post a message or give a call when he is out.

Not much new from here ...

Let's send good wishes and positive thoughts to Steve as he leaves tomorrow for Chicago where a gifted doctor will work a medical miracle with his painful hip. Good friends Mark Wight and Esther will look after him until he's ready to fly back to Seattle.

Thanks for the update, Paula!

Hey Dad - you would have loved this Honors Discussion group session I was at last night. The professor first dumped 2 books on the table and declared they were the best/most important books on the subject of Computer Science. And one of them was the Gödel, Escher and Bach book! It was great that I was able to contribute to the conversation about that. And many other things. It was the best academic experience I ever had. Now I'm even more sure of the path I'm taking. Or trying to :)

Enjoy the new digs!

I have the pleasure of announcing that Mom and Dad have both arrived safely at the Stately Stylos Manor, and are getting ready to eat a lamb dinner.

Yup, all moved in. I couldn't have done it without all those helping hands. Thanks everybody! I'm back at work for a couple of days, then I have a week off for those new house activities, like finding lost items, decorating, fixing doors and lights etc. Looking forward to seeing Mom and Dad in a few days. Send me some flight info, Mom.

Only so much less stuff, and quite a bit cooler. We missed you, Mona, and that powerhouse son of yours. Ann has dubbed the place the Stately Stylos Manner. It is amazing..can't wait for the next big party there.

Well I ended out 2005 with a migraine headache, of all things. That wasn't in my plan. Let's hope there aren't more of those laying in wait in the future. What a trip. And not in a good way. :)

Aha!!! It is Ana's karma that leads to the loss of luggage. Funny how I only lose mine when I travel with her.

It was a quiet but busy (with the normal end of the year things) for my New Year's. Trying hard to get everything caught up to be out of commission for a month or so.

It's always a little sad when the holidays end, but at least the days are getting longer and spring is just around the corner. I hope all is well for all. §

Happy New Year from me, too! Ana made it here in true Steve Fashion, on time, and one bag shy! School starts for them all tomorrow, and now that all the xmas hype and hectic shoping is over, and the days are getting lomger, we can start looking forward to summer! Then I can get in my nap on the deck ...

Paula, congratulations on your new deck! Isn't it great to see a big job completed?

Happy new year to you, too, Vanessa, and to your brother and mother and father, too. You have had 6 more hours of 2006 than we have. How does it look so far?

Happy New Year to the rest of you as well. Make it a good year.

And a Happy New Year from the East Coast! In celebration I took an hour long nap on my new deck! Okay, I was nestled under a down blanket, but it is done! Mark grilled us an amazing dinner there at midnight. This all adds up to the start of a great year, I just know it. Happy New Year to you all.
