Here is what's up. Want to Add a Message?
As for other news, I am now counting the minutes before my
departure from Paula and Mark's house. Heading back to France in
a few hours, unless I should be lucky enough to get bumped again.
Just make it time before the last day of summer. Should even be
some beach days left over there. It has been a long visit, and I
was glad to get a chance to see all of my family, even if some of
the visits were short. I will miss you all, but I am sure I will
be kept busy with my own two whirlwinds. Might even squeeze in
time to find a job. In any event, good luck holding down the fort
on this side. You know where you can find me. my page!!!!

Aw thanks, Paulala....So nice, I read it twice. Okay, okay,
whodat on the lawn chair. It didn't seem to fit the story. I am
not saying who I think it is for fear of insulting those it is or
those it ain't. Enjoy the weekend all...§

Pig Pile on Paula's House!! Yesterday I took Miranda, her
friend Krystal, and Paul on a grueling 7 mile hike. We went up to
Lena Lake in the Olympic Mountains (Washington's Other Mountain
Range). And boy are my knees aching!! Man, I have to do that more
often -- it was great to watch the kids go from "this is
boring" to "look at this cool (rock, fungus,
squirrel...etc)". The lake was gorgeous, and the weather was
too. Now back to work....bummer!

email address. Keep trying, but feel free to call or write to her
the old fashioned way.

Great reading, that must be why l keep forgetting to write.
Jess came back to visit this week-end; she has been away two
weeks! We miss her, but she seems to be doing wonderfully, though
over-worked of course. Watching Mark pack up to leave is just
another trauma for us. Too many comings and goings. All a part of
life I guess. I am glad you Worthington Styloses enjoyed NC as we
did. And glad you West Coasters are enjoying each other's
company. Hey, lets all think about planning mom and dad's 50th.
When and where? Should we wait until the end of June when all the
children are out of school? I volunteer our house. Other ideas?
Keeo on writing.

Arrived safe and sound back in Worthington at about 1 PM this
afternoon (Sunday). Spent the night last night in a motel around
Harrisburg PA. Had a great time in NC, thank you to B&R (and
A). Cabin looks great. Wish we could get there more often. Best
wishes to JZSA at college; come see us sometime. And somebody
remind me, how do you pronounce Puyallup?
Scott (@stylos.net)
- Sunday, September 13, 1998 at 12:22:20 (PDT)
All I can say is that it's a good thing that we on the left
coast have things to do other than check this page for news from
afar. Things would get mighty boring. We had yet another fine
barbecue in Kingston today. In fact we just finished it. Betsy is
going to come and spend the night with us, then come with us
tomorrow to the Puyallup Fair and the Northwest Trek (a wildlife
preserve in the shadow of Mt. Rainier). I just wanted to remind
everyone, if you ever plan a trip to the Northwest, be sure to
make it between mid August and mid October. The most reliable
weather and the smallest crowds. I also want to be sure to wish
Brother Mark a happy last week stateside. Even though there is no
real difference between 3000 and 7000 miles, especially when your
communication is cyber based, I feel like we are losing him all
over again. Been great to have you around Mark, and thanks for
the website.....Adios.....§

Hi: Now for news from west of the continental divide. First of
all, Athena, I felt the same way as you did about the sliding
rock when I saw it, but it turns out that there is one in
Washington State as well, and Lord knows we have some good
lawyers here. Next, I took Paul Pingree and a friend to the
baseball game yesterday, then had another nice Barbecue with the
westernmost Styloses, the Stylos/Pingrees. Happy to report that
all here are doing well. Go, Thene, or Row, Thene, as the case
may be. And have a great time in NC, Linda, Scott, Melissa and
Joey. Keep those cards and letters coming...§

- Sunday, September 06, 1998 at 23:00:31 (PDT)
well i guess that bit of news was hard to follow. . .i do have
this to say: that scott and linda and joey and melissa all
arrived down here safely . . . i drove to brevard this morning
and we all had fried chicken and corn for lunch and went to the
cradle of forestry. The sliding rock was too full and crowded
though so we didn't get to have that particular brand of fun ( i
always say about the sliding rock, they would never allow this in
massachusetts because of potential lawsuits . . .) now i am back
at school finishing my homework so i can go to bed early because
for those of you who might not have heard, yes, i have joined the
clemson crew team . . . only land practices so far but they still
make us get up awful early. That's the news from south of the
mason dixon line . . .

Three more weeks of work Stateside for me, and I will be keeping

is this?" and "Why is that?".
A hearty Welcome Back to the East Coast goes out to Tim and

Yes, it is true. We drove Jessamyn to Marlboro College

her own Jess. It was a very proud and poignant moment. I miss her
already; it is MUCH too quiet here. Melinda is interested to see
how this only child thing works. Jessamyn's new address is P.O.
Box 26, Marlboro College, Marlboro Vermont 05344. Phone in her

Brother Mark will be able to fix it as soon as he sees it. And
watch out, Timmy, Mark is in Boston this weekend, and he takes
alot of pride in this site. Only kidding, Tim. We are all happy

Thanks a lot for all your thoughtful wishes. I might have been
president of these United States If I had worked harder and
practiced lying but even that would not have given me more
gladness, happiness, sense of well being, or sense of pride that
I feel in being part of this family. And as for my birthday I
don't feel a day older than 72. But all kidding aside I have been
most fortunate, not only in the family we raised but also in the
family I was raised.. Even though there are memories better
forgotten my original family had a good share of love and good
wishes for all of us. So mitera kai patera I want you to know I
am grateful and wish I had told you this a lot sooner. But I
guess we were all busy finding an identity and a way to get to
not being poor to show our gratefulness for what we had. As to
the family we raised there are no regrets or at least none I can
think of right now. I love you all and you are all very special
in you own unique ways. So thanks.

Well, hard to be inside when the weather has been so nice. It
seems that summer in the Pacific Northwest happens in August and
September. Ana and I are happily spending August in a small beach
house in Gig Harbor. Out of respect to the view and to Ana, I
didn't bring a computer and didn't have a phone hooked up (my
mobile phone doesn't work there). In a way, it is like still
being on vacation, if being a single working parent can ever be a
vacation. We've done plenty of reading and walking on the beach.
Ana has been swimming up a storm, although she still wears a life
preserver when swimming in the sound. And for a few days, she
can't go over her head, while her ears heal from last week's
piercing. We trust that you all had a nice 60th birthday party
for Dick Straley. Mark, when do you head back to France? Keep the
post-it's coming!!!! Hope all is well.....§

Good thoughts and wishes and crossed fingers to Mona. We made
it back to MA last night after a long ride from N.C., made easier
thanks to Dad's help at the wheel. We also stopped at liberty
park, and had time to do the statue thing. Even though we missed
the first boat, Vanessa's good looks and a friendly ranger got us
up to the crown. Just winding down before the return to France in
a couple of weeks. Hope to make it to see Scott before they all
leave. What else is new?

Phew! I'm most of the way through Paul's Birthday Weekend.
Yesterday was a madhouse of running around, eating pizza and ice
cream cake, ending with four 8 year olds watching scary movies
and crashing on the living room floor. Today's activities include
making Creepy Crawlers, playing video games and returning guests
to their homes. Then David and Paul will head in to town on the
ferry, walk over to the Kingdome and *not* watch Randy Johnson
pitch against David Cone (sp?) and the Yankees. The game will be
nationally televised - so if you're watching, keep an eye out for
the two Pings! In the Betsy department, she cantered for the
first time yesterday, and thought it was quite a thrill! Needless
to say, I'm proud as can be of my little ones, and hope some of
you will get the chance to come out and see for yourselves!

TGIF. Supposed to be a nice weekend coming up around these
parts in Western Mass. Joey is leaving for a 1 week canoe trip in
Maine tomorrow at 5:30 AM. He's recovering from his whooping
cough and sinusitis just about in time, but still whoops once in
a while. Linda, Lissa and Joe will all take a week in Maine the
following week. Jeff and I will hold down the fort and keep our
noses to the grindstone. Jeff's doing well with his chemistry

delicious blueberries. We await Athena and Jessamyn Saturday.
Anyone else?

Hey there! Ana and I should be arriving at the cabin on
Wednesday. Ana is looking forward to making it three years in a
row, to seeing her cousins and other relatives, and to going back
to camp, if only for a few days. I'm looking forward to a little
R&R myself. We will probably be spending about 8 or 9 days
there, and heading back to Seattle, with a weekend stop in
Boston. Ya'll come on down, ya'hear!

Melinda and I made it to the Layne Laurel Lodge. The trip was
long and scenic. We entertained each other and listened to music
and stories. All is well here; Vanessa and Jerome are off at
camp, Mark and Dad junk yard hopping, Melinda reading, Mom
pulling kudzu, and me reporting it all. Come join us!

Hi Mark (Stylos)! Hope your family time down south is going
well. Tech question. How come when I go to Ramona's birthday
pictures I loose the "back" arrow and have to reenter
the main page through the "location:" route. Mark
(Allan)!

Phew! That's much easier on my browser! Steve is at the
Mariner's game with Ana, Betsy and Paul right now. I'm enjoying
the waning moments of my time "off". Catch a crawdad
for me! But leave them turtles be!!

The current number at the cabin is 828-675-0752. So far we are
five here: P and R plus Mark, Vanessa and Jerome. We expect Paula
and Melinda by Sunday, latest. We're having perfect weather at
the moment. Mark has been sawing and splitting firewood. Vanessa
and Jerome go to a camp 3 hours a day in Burnsville, and keep
things lively here the rest of the time. They're improving their
English, we're improving our French. Miranda, welcome home and
thanks for sending us a card. We're looking forward to a posting
with lots of details about "what I did this summer".
Keep this thing alive, you guys, now that we have it conveniently
set up. Ramona, Mom, Yaya.

Today I drive down to pick up Miranda. I expect to be blinded
by her tan: working on that was her singular mission. The weather
is overcast, as it has been all week. I went to a High Tech
Career fair yesterday, and got some encouraging leads, as well as
a good sense of how in demand testers are these days. Even talked
to Siemens, Dad, and wonder if they're still using MUMPS. Anyway,
I do hope someone will post here, or at least send me the new
phone # for the cabin: I'm missing you all, as ever.

Vive La France!! Congratulations on the huge World Cup
victory! Betsy and I are watching the rerun of The Odyssey on TV,
and loving it. It reminds me of listening to Dad read of Greek
heroes, with all the siblings crowded around.

Soccer? Did someone say Soccer? Vanessa and Jerome would like
to note that their continued support has brought France to the
finals against Brazil. Vive le France! Vive le Football!

Bravo! Thanks for the messages from the "on the
road" crew. The next best thing to being there. It was fun
to follow you along on the map. Even though my little map doesn't
have Phillipe or Santorini that I could find. You'll have to show
me when you're back. Speaking of soccer, here's some statistics
from Time magazine: percentage of English men who would rather
watch world cup soccer on TV than have sex with the woman of
their dreams-95%; percentage of Americans who know that the world
cup has something to do with soccer-50%. Anyways, can't wait to
see those travel photos. Have a happy and safe trip home
everybody. Love, Scott.

one final posting from your grecian correspondent...the
brazil--holland game is on tv as you might know, everyone here is
watching . . .melinda and i did rent a skooter after all after
much careful deliberation, don't worry all is well...even mark (
he had his own ) all is winding up successfully, one more boat
ride to athens then a plane ride thursday morning . . . hope
mark's trip was fun and successful, and miranda's too, looking
forward to seeing you all real soon . . . weather continues
cooler but we all got sunburnt a little today (except dad)
melinda and i couldn't resist renting one of those tropical
umbrellas on the beach today (photo op don't you know) we bought
electric fans to take with us from hotel to hotel to help us
sleep, we may leave them at our final hotel, the phaedra in
athens with the owner who let us store our luggage there . .
.hope everyone is well and happy and ready to have us home
because here we come! love from the greek island four

yes we are on paros yes there are palm trees yes we miss you
all. We have eaten a great deal of souvlaki and spaghetti
boleneze (dad) tzaziki and greek salads (mark and athena) luckily
mark and athena have similar tastes as do (as dad pointed out)
buddy and melinda. I have had some of the best fish i've ever had
and so very fresh. Not to mention octopus. The water is wonderful
for swimming, the surrounding bodies are all tan and young and
beautiful everyone speaks english at least on this island and
they all have cell phones that go off at any given moment and you
don't know what language they will start speaking into it. We saw
the ruins and the wall frescoes in there (santorini) i bought the
beautiful book for any one who's interested . . . i went with dad
and we had both really liked them. I like going around with dad
because we are treated like long lost relatives no matter where
we go. I truly wish you ALL could have come on this trip....
Sounds like there will be a gathering of the clan here in october
for giannis' wedding for anyone who wants to catch up . . . i do
highly recommend it. Fillipei is especially beautiful for those
who like mountains and the thessoloniki relatives are worth the
trip right there (brush up on your greek though) and as for the
islands well they are just little tropical paradises. Come on
down! Meantime i will see many of you in massachusetts or in
north carolina Much much love from your wandering sister athena
p.s. eight roles of film and counting . . .

Hi All! Wow, Athena, you make it sound very appealing. Ana and
I are in Portland celebrating the tenth annual fourth of the
seventh with the Neidigs (John, Barbara, Harper and Cecille).
Seems like all of their friends started their families in their
forties, so we somehow skip a generation. And it doesn't even
seem to impact the generation gap. Needless to say, Ana and I fit
right in. We are still planning to come to North Carolina late in
July. We are shooting for July 23rd or so until August 3rd or so.
We are flying standby (thanks again, Mark F.) so our schedule
will be a bit unpredictable. We still haven't decided whether to
rent a car. Any suggestions? Here's to a happy, healthy and safe
Independence Day!!! §

Say, why do we call this a guestbook? It has become a family
bulletin board. While at the Appalachian State University last
week I passed by the computer room and saw a staff member from
the dulcimer workshop there, so I went in and asked to borrow the
internet for a momentito and so I was able to get news from both
the travelers and the stay-at-homers. I am now back in Brevard.
All is well here. I hope everybody finds a way to celebrate the
Fourth of the Seventh. Keep posting, Paul, Athena, Melinda and
Mark and we'll keep eagerly reading. RLS (Athena, thanks for the
lengthy travel commentaries. They're great!)

hey! we're in santorini now, which we all agree is one of the
best places yet . .. . it is just a little cooler (still hot
though -- quote from dad "there's no need for this kind of
heat " but it is clean and white and the ocean is a deep
electric blue. We found this internet cafe but the system seems
slow and a little funky, i hope this works . . . i can't access
my hotmail (nor can any of the other frustrated americans) but at
least we have the home sweet homepage. We continue to eat well,
nap alot, get along good. The islands seem even more relaxed than
the mainland. We found peanut butter for melinda and dad, and a
beautiful expensive hotel for mark to drool over (we're staying
in a cheap clean and homey one) there are donkeys and tele-trams
and boats and good fruit and cheap pistachios. We are rotating
the same three novels between us, and getting to know eachother
much better. Everything is as blue and white as the greek flag.
Tons of tanned beefcake and cheesecake. And a restaurant called
Mamas (the sign says: mama loves you babies) where dad got a big
american breakfast. The sky is a dome of blue, the sun is strong
and hot, there are palm trees enough to make us feel like we are
really on vacation and americans enough to make us feel not too
far from home. The streets are shiny black cobble, the pace is
slow and loud. Scooters every where. Very interesting reenforced
concrete construction (and lots of half finished buildings) lots
of older men in cafes with nothing seemingly to do but drink
greek coffee, twirl their worry beads and give us directions.
Well that was more in athens. Here is a much younger and more
industrious crowd. We are all struck by how clean it is here
compared to athens. And how much easier to breathe. We are happy
to be in a hotel for more than one night. We are thinking of four
days here and two on paros before we head back to athens
wednesday night to head home thursday morning. We will fly right
through the full moon (in cancer) and be home six something
thursday night after dropping melinda at a london hotel. It is
nice to sleep late instead of charging off to the next site. I am
headed for the beach myself and maybe a cool drink. It is nice to
be on a contained island where none of us can get too lost.
Wishin you all were here to share in the hot fun (and decision
making) we love you all even though it is hard to access the
email to tell you personally. Looking forward to seeing you in
our next rendez-vousies. Mark, i got your brief message and will
try to answer if this system lets me. Love from athena

I just got an email from athena who says that, alas, they are
temporarily unable to access our web page. I'm sure they
(especially Melinda) will keep trying. She wanted to tell all of
us virtual travelers that they are alive and well, and on their
way to Santorini. I talked to Melinda and Dad today and can
attest to their good health. I hope they are taking lots of
pictures and committing everything to memory for our enjoyment.
Stay cool!
