Here is what's up. Want to Add a Message?

I worked last Saturday at the Nursery, and spent Sunday doing laundry, grocery, billpaying...which is why I'm so absent these days. Hopefully I'll get a couple of minutes to catch you all up soon. Tomorrow Miranda's getting her wisdom teeth pulled, so send some good thoughts her way.

Are you going to the game tomorrow Steve?! Paul is, lucky dog...

Life is like a song - timing is the key. At least according to brother Doctor Scott. And I see Mark took those words to heart when he left his posting. He managed to get his thank you's in 9 seconds before his birthday expired, at least here on the west coast. Glad it was a happy one, Mark. Now get back here. §

Happy Birthday from the rainy East Coast as well. Sure hope you got the good weather I sent your way, as well as my wishes for a wonderful day. You deserve the best, or at least chocolate cake, presents, and lots of birthday spankings. Love from your big sister,

The weatherman really got it wrong here today. Instead of fierce winds and pouring rain that were predicted we have a beautiful dry sunny day! No complaints from us. I hope all of you reading this are as fortunate. Our favorite walking trails in the forest have been closed because to damage from recent wind and rain. We are feeling fortunate that all we got from it was water in the basement.

Well now that the Red Sox have won again, we can get back to real life. Melinda came for a whirlwind visit, which was great fun. I completed my third glaze firing (which was very informative and some fun), and it was a lovely sunny Sunday. How about y'all? Give us the water update, Mom and Dad, and Mona, do tell us about your new job. Vanessa, how do you like jr. high school? (or is it college, or university...I am so confused). Come to think about it, how about the rest of you?

JEROMEO! I wish you the happiest of all birthdays! The big 10! Why, last time I saw you , you were only 9. I cannot believe I am not the first to post a message for you this morning. I hope you know that the Redsox win last night was just for you...I had a little talk with them and arranged it. Have a great day and welcome to your second decade.

Happy Birthday, Jerome! I hope you are enjoying your first day in the double digits! You will never again be able to write your age with one digit. Here's wishing you a long and happy life. I don't think I will be around on the day that you need 3 digits to write your age. How about those Red Sox, eh? I hope you are enjoying your presents. This year I got to see a few of them before you did.

And a happy day to Vanessa and Sophie, too. I hope you all enjoy the celebration of Jerome...§

Paula
Friday, September 17, 2004 at 16:02:11 (PDT)
Hello to all our Stylos friends...

We have survived in excellent shape, another one of God's most awesome creations. Hurricane Ivan has come and gone and it seems as if it were just a mirage....It was here and gone in such a short time. We had spent several days more or less prepping for it....ie picking up loose stuff around the yards, moving our lawn and some of our patio stuff to outdoor sheds where I keep the riding lawnmower and other tools that are used less and less because of old age and creeping laziness;)) Luckily I had the help of my strapping 6'6" grandson Dusty to do the heavy lifting and moving. My other grandson who was home from Univ. of Florida also lent a hand in several jobs....all of this took parts of a couple of days, then with $80 bucks for four sheets of plywood, Ann and I boarded up the fouor long picture windows on the south side of our home....then at around noon on Wednesday, we drove the 35 miles mostly north to our son's home north of Pascagoula.....and about 20 miles west of Mobile, AL.

At around 6 pm, it started raining, so we just snacked, ate, and chatted and watched Fox News and The Weather Channel display in big screen color the oncoming onslought.....We picked and disected all of it as we could finalize the spot upon which the eye of the storm would first hit land. That is a very important piece of info, because if you know thata, you know, in essence, just how the final outcome of the storm is gonna impact you. Well it came ashore in Gulf Shores/Orange Beach, Alabama....about 51 miles east from our home in Gautier, Mississippi. For us, that meant that we were kinda, semi safe because 95% of the devastation was gonna be on land that was in the northeast quadrant of the storm...out to 200 miles. For a catagory 3 storm, that meant we would get at the max, only catagory 1 winds at the most......had it hit 20 miles farther west towards us, we would have really been in for a devastating outcome........

As it was, we were blessed with only twigs, leaves and a couple of larger branches in our yards, and the loss of electricity of only one day....yesterday, the day of the storm....We are accustomed to 4 or 5 days without electricity ....and lemme tell you, try living in a hot humid damp area for that long with no ice, no breath of fresh air, and no hot food. Anyway, we are Thankful to God for again, taking care of my wonderful family, and Ramona, thank you so much for your kind letter.

From Ann and I.........y'all have a great day.

Remember the lake that used to occesionally form in our back yard? Now it's an ocean! (The lake is in the basement.)We're sweeping it out, even though the rain is expected to continue for some time. We had hard winds last night but no trees fell. Just small limbs. It's another no-school day for the kids. Landslides caused the Blue Ridge Parkway to crumble in 4 places, one of them between rte. 80 and Mt. Mitchell. Authorities say it may be closed for a year!

We're fine, haven't lost electricity, just the cable. This too shall pass (and soon, I hope).

Good question: "Where's Mark?" the kids are asking.
I've been elected General Secretary of the parents'association at Vanessa's school. She's a real teenager now and she adjusted so quickly to her brand new way of life. So weird to see her with 15 year old kids. Wait till you see her Mark!
Hope everyone is fine. Sending you lots of sunshine from the riviera.

It's always a pleasure to have you, Dad. And the place is always a bit empty after you leave. So you hurry back, y'hear? We're glad you made it back to the hurricane's path before it got there. Remember to button down those hatches....§

Steve? Steve! What about Mark? Who brought you out here? Who took you back to the airport? Who was at all four of the Sox games?

But, yes, we are all indebted to Steve for making it possible. Just let's remember to tell him next time we want to go to Red Sox WINS, not just Red Sox games!

It was great having you out here, Panos. We hadn't seen back to back games since Yaz got hit #3000, against the Yankees. Reggie Jackson brought him in the ball, and George Scott, wearing a Yankee #5, came out and gave him a hug.

See you in Boston in late October ...

The game I went to I would (honestly) guess it was about 30% Red Sox fans. Even the Seattle transplants were rooting for the Sox, I'd say.

It was great to have so many of my relations at the dinner table tonight. I was a bit late getting going (so what else is new?) and we're just chowing down on the Apple Crisp right now....life is good.

Ramona
Sunday, September 12, 2004 at 14:58:21 (PDT)
You will have to ask Dad and Mark about the Red Sox. They are at the game now. That is four in a row for them. Ana and I, on the other hand, are having a nice quiet cloudy Sunday at home. Doing the laundry, cleaning the house and doing homework. It's been a very nice visit with Dad, who will be headed out to Mona's for dinner tonight. I have a nice picture of Steve, Ana, Dad, Mark, Mona, Tim, Paul and Besty at the baseball game on Thursday. Maybe I'll share it sometime. Hope everyone is having a very nice end of the summer/beginning of Fall. §

Water, what water? The sun is shining brightly today. I choose to believe that the prediction of another hurricane is just rumor. Brevard Schools have already had two "snow days". Most roadways are now open. Asheville is still suffering from a broken down water processing system, or something.

I am thinking of what we all, and especially the Hansons, were going through this time 3 years ago. I guess we might all do as Christine liked to do: hold hands and sing about love and happy families.

Four days without a new message. I must do something about that!

Well, the Seattle kids (Betsy, Paul and Ana) start a new school year tomorrow. Best wishes for their "re-entry" as they say in Europe.

We have been alone for the last week, after 6 weeks of company. Empty nest all over again. But Mark is on his way down from Massachusetts in the camper-bus, and if he hurries he will get here before the fringes of the well-publicized hurricane gives us some rain. Oops, too late; I see that the rain has started. We took advantage of yesterday's perfect weather to get in a walk in the woods.

Thanks, Scott for the photo of Athena and Amy's house. It looks great.

Oh yes, I forgot to acknowlege the college kids among us who will be starting on this academic venture (Melissa and Jillian) and those who are in the middle or last part of it: Melinda, Jeffrey and Pam. So what can I tell them, but Show up (every day), Pay attention and Persevere. You'll be glad you did.

Yes, indeed, we arrived okay. In fact, it turned out to be a very good day. While sitting on the tarmack in Charlotte, waiting for a gate to open up, I received a phone call informing me that we won the trial which took up the first part of the summer. Then we were bumped up to first class for the remainder of the trip at no extra charge (it pays to ask). Then we landed to perfect weather in Seattle, 72 degrees and 100 mile visibility. The sun was setting and the full moon rising. Life is good. Everything was so perfect that I hardly noticed that my golf clubs ended up in Pittsburgh. Hardly noticed? Who am I kidding, I expected it. It's a good thing I'm not coming to Seattle for a golf tournament. I'm assured that they will be here by noon tomorrow.

Thanks Mom and Dad for a great relaxing visit. I hope we see you before too long....§

The last message posted itself before I was finished. Why? Maybe I hit the enter button or something...Anyway, we enjoyed showing Steve and Ana the quiet (slow? boring?) pastimes of little old Brevard and we did have the fun of Paul's birthday at Twin Dragons (complete with a balloon and about 8 Chinese servers singing), and a scrabble tournament (?) afterwards. So land safely, Steve and Ana, and Mark, the latch-string is out.

First of all, Happy Birthday to a great person, Paul. Thanks to you to make the kids so happy and well. Jerome adjusted and installed his bike all by himself. He played baseball "like steven used to" so he said (with a tennis ball onto the house's walls) while Vanessa was snoring! She had fantastic vacations, and she'd rather like Berkeley than Standford! as she told me. Got to find a good job soon! Thank you to all of you you're such a great family. How was your play Melissa? HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD! As you can see, your progeny all conspired to make sure you did not spend even one day in August without the company of as many of us as possible. Pretty good, huh? Just goes to show how much we all love and appreciate you, and especially how much we all enjoy those wonderful breakfasts you make for us. Now that this day has arrived, enjoy your birthday as you deserve to. HAVE FUN! And now we can officially start planning for the big 80 next year. I love you, Dad. You really are the greatest.

We are here. Alive and well. Enjoying the peacefulness in Brevard. We spent the day at the Biltmore Estate. Very relaxing and interesting. Well, for Steve anyway. Ana was just a wee bit bored, though she would never admit it. We have lots of activities planned for the nezt four days, and we will head back west on Monday. This is the first time we have had Mom and Dad to ourselves in NC. It is different, but nice. We recommend it. We have had word from Mark that the hard part of his journey is over and that it should be smooth sailing from here. Look for Mark at least in Boston early next week. That is of course, unless you are looking for him in NYC this weekend.

Hey, Dad! For your birthday I'm trying to arrange for the Little Boston kids to win the World Series! The North Kitsap 14 years old babe ruth team is playing in Wilson, North Carolina this week - with the final game on Saturday! It has quite a few of the kids Paul played with, but couldn't join, because of being born on the cutoff day...

Anyway, it's been raining like crazy here (oddly enough), and I'm getting around to sorting through old paperwork and stuff...such fun!

Steve, I picked up the things from Dancing Brush, and will find a way to get them to you when you get home. Hope you're having fun!!

Second try's a charm. After a trip from Charlotte to Asheville, a bit of circling, and a return to Charlotte, USAir decided to deliver Ana and Steve to Asheville early this afternoon. Took them just a little longer from Charlotte to Asheville than Vanessa's and my detoured route yesterday. But they did not get to sllep through it as Vanessa did most of the way. Now we are working on the home stretch of the vacation.

We would have been much sadder to see her go if we weren't going to be on the same flight tomorrow. So all's well that ends well. Or all's well that begins well. Oh well, All's Well. Fortune cookies and beachcombing and hair combing and pottery painting and picking up cousins (Vanessa is the champ) and french braiding and 21 (thousand) questions and Othello and the Olympics (OK, that was just me...) and The Simpsons and napping (that was me too) and on to the ferry into Steve's welcoming arms! Not in that order.

Thanks for coming girls! Hope to see you again soon.

Well, we made it to a Brave game. Atalanta lost, but they did score one. So did Jerome: Go to www.atlantabraves.com/fanfoto, select Friday the 13th's game, then gallery 11. Look at the 2nd column, 10th row!

Wowow you sure know how to make a heart jump, doncha??

But in answer to your question "Al?" well I can think of nothing more exciting than having you and whoever you can get aboard to "come on down"!!!! If you can find time to spend with us old people, that would be wonderful.....

As long as it is not prior to Tuesday Aug 17th....We will be in north Alabama visiting family and attending a family reunion until then. After that, the coast is clear.......literally!

If you do decide to come either email me or call me.
Hugs to all the other members of the Stylos clan. You guys travel so much it is hard to keep up with you all.......but I do try;))

Come on down, Mona. The wells are never dry in this part of the world, though we are enjoying our fourth day of sun and NO HUMIDITY right now.

I was slated to bring the skittles board, but at the last minute had to leave it out due to space restrictions. The tentative plan is to bring it back, after I drop the kids of in N.Y on the 28th.

Now ... Get packing!

I've got a one day landscaping job (today), and then I'll be getting down to brass tacks. Looks like the road trip os a go and me and Paul (and maybe Betsy - you could probably twist her arm) will be heading out this coming weekend. The tentative plan is to include both NC and Mass in a grand swing. Maybe also including Mississippi. Al? I'll email as appropriate. Starting tomorrow. Unless I turn around and the well is actually dry....

Thanks for the info Naki. The family tree needs a lot of updating. If you don't mind, you could send some or all of the following for both your kids and your grandchildren: date of birth, place of birth, name of spouse, date and place of marriage. You can email it to me at the address below. Anyone who has information for other branches of the family can do the same (need lots of info for Helmars, Roses, Straleys, etc.) If there is any information you don't want listed in a public place, just say so.

What's the plan Mona? Coming east?

If you are putting together a family tree, there is the Hanson side of the family.

C. lee Hanson married Eunice Katherine Marguerite Stylos, January 15, 1955. Two Children: Kathryn Lee Hanson, born February 1, 1961; Peter Burton
Hanson, born January 24, 1969, Deceased 9/11/01.
Do you want to go on further.

I'm safely home as well. I went to Vancouver to see the International Fireworks Competition Grand Finale. Sweden won by beating out China and Spain. I have never seen fireworks quite like that before. And I had forgotten just how many people 500,000 was. Just like Woodstock except dry and mostly sober and straight. Very impressive. Certainly more impressive than the Blue Angels who kept buzzing me as I was trying to mow the lawn today. I was glad that they were ours, but it made me wonder what it must be like to live in a war torn country. I have my reservations, Ana and I will be arriving in Asheville about 24 hours after Vanessa arrives in Charlotte. I'll email the details. We'll be staying unti the afternoon of Monday, August 30. §

Lucky you, Steve. We very much enjoyed the lovely Vanessa here, now it is your turn. Jessamyn, Melinda and I had a sunny extra day at the cabin yesterday, tubing (now THAT was fun), cooking, singing, story telling and making s'mores. Today we will put the cabnb back to rights for the next troupe and head down to Brevard for more family adventures, by way of the BlueRidge Parkway.

Happy Birthday, Paul!!! I hope you are having a great birthday, and I am sure that it will be a great year. You must be 14. Send me some pictures and I'll be sure to post a Paul collection. In case anyone didn't notice, I posted a bunch of pictures recently, including pictures of Rex's 80th Birthday Party in L.A. last weekend.

Summer around here has been very pleasant. Ana spent the month of July in Lake Tahoe, but is here now for a few days. Vanessa is on her way. On Tuesday, they both head off to French camp together. Then on or about August 18, we head back to NC for the rest of the summer.

Paula, Melinda and Jess: I hope your trip to NC is exciting and relaxing. No, those two things are not mutually exclusive. Mom, I hope your voice comes back and you are fully recovered from whatever it was you brought back from the west coast. Dad, I hope those bums start winning soon. And everyone else, I hope you are having a great summer. §

HereI am, in Manhattan Beach, finally close to a computer. We have been having a wonderful weekend celebrating Rex and his 80 years. So much good talk, good food and catching up with cousins, nieces and nephews. Beverly and Barry and Kathi have done a wonderful making everybody welcome and glad to be here.Gracie, the yongest member of our troup, and the leader of the new generation has kept us all amused and amazed.
Steve and Ana left for Disneyland this morning. Kate and Christ will start driving up the coast tomorrow, Becky and entourage will head off for Thousand Oaks sometime tomorrow, then Rex goes back to Hawaii on Tuesday, and for once I will be the last one to leave a party. Flying out late Tuesday, spending 4 hours on a layover in Newark, then, Jill will meet me shortly before noon on Wednesday. I expect that by then Paula and girls and Mark and kids will be there and settled in, and the next part of our summer will begin!

Sad to leave, but always happy to arrive.

Ijust made it on the plane: they said it was full, and with a other people waiting, I thought I would not get on. Much to my surprise, as I was calling Steve and switching to Plan B, I was paged to get on the flight! I got the last seat, and they locked the door behind me.

Now I am in the Newark Airport, taking advantage of the latest gadget Steve and Ana set me up with: a mobile phone that connects my PC to the Internet, and here I am! My next flight to Ashville is looking pretty empty, so, barring an unforseen surprise, I should be in the Carolina's for lunch.

Vanessa, Jerome, where you are?

Mark
Monday, July 12, 2004 at 05:14:58 (PDT)
Yeah, great to see a message from you, Kim. It's almost worth making the trip from Seattle to see you go vote GWB out of office. But alas, circumstances don't permit. But do let me know sometime when you are stopping by Seattle. I'd love to come to the airport and buy you a cup of coffee or something. You can reach me at steve@stylos.net.

I dropped Mark off at the airport a few minutes ago. It's always a little sad when someone leaves. But the good news is that he just called and he is on the plane to Newark. So he should have no problem getting on the flight to Asheville. Have a great time in the Carolina's y'all, and we will see you in a month or so. §
