Happy New Year's Everybody! Tim, Ana and I have decided to take this last opportunity to leave the country. We are going to usher in the New Year from Vancouver, BC. Too bad it's just as gray and rainy up there as it is here. Nothing like one more Road Trip, for the year that might have been my busiest, travel-wise. I hope everyone stays safe and has fun on this 'amateur night'. We'll talk to you all next year....§

Cold! It got down to single digits (centigrade anyway ...). Needed both a sweater AND a windbreaker! There is also plenty of snow to be seen, even if it is an hour or two away. The kids once again had a good christmas, thanks to Sophie's care and attention, and the treat of speaking to their grand-parents, so that's the most important. (Hi Mom!)

Hey brother Mark, how was your Christmas?

Sunny and cold today in Brevard, too. This is that strange week between Christmas and New Years when it's hard to remember what day of the week it is. Paul is doing well, staying pretty close to home. Tomorrow I will put away the signs of Christmas and get ready for 2003. Does anybody have any NEW New Years resolutions or are you all keeping the same old ones? Better have them ready by Wednesday.

A beautiful day, sun shining brightly on the snow. Still eating Christmas chocolate. Fire burning in the fireplace. Reflecting on another year gone by. Sending my wishes of peace and contentment to you all.

Merrrry Christmas from Kingston! It's been a very merry and relaxing Christmas in the Northwest. Sorry, New Englanders, but we don't miss the snow one little bit. But we miss all of you. We're glad to know everybody's safe, jolly, and Home For Christmas. Had a great Christmas dinner with the Pingrees and to all a good night. §

Grandson Paul is a man of few words, isn't he? But his message is clear. We have had a good Christmas. We got word directly, or indirectly from all the kids and some of the grandkids. The telephone and internet does make the distance more tolerable.

I hope all of you in MA are getting just as much snow as you want and no more. Holiday greetings to one and all.

There's magic in the air here in Massachusetts - and lots of big snow flakes! Spent Christmas eve with the kids at Pam's place. This morning got to watch Cameron enjoy the gifts of Christmas - with complete joy - in his new batman costume. Now I'm back in Northampton which looks like a shaken snow globe - with nobody on the streets and not a plow in sight - and everything turning quickly white. Maybe I'll put on my cross country skis and ski around the town before it gets dark - and come back home for hot chocolate.

Merry Christmas to my wonderful family. Here in Acton we have had a grand Christmas. Turkey is cooking in the oven, fire in the hearth and a snowstorm out the window. All is right with the world. Yours?

Scott did a wonderful job hosting a family Sunday dinner yesterday. Roast chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, and a cake made by Melissa. Great company- all his kids (plus Rose), my kids, and Athena (plus Amy). Oh, and Mark too. A houseful. I think I can speak for all when I say we had a great time. How are the rest of you?

Uncle Buddy we hope that you are feeling better. don't forget to take baby steps on your road to recovery. I know it hard to be patient but you need to so we can enjoy your great jokes and wisdom in person.

Aunt Ramona don't forget to tell him you are the boss on this journey. But I know he knows it anyway.

It is hard to believe the first day of winter is tomorrow and currently it is 50 degrees outside. I wish it was snow.

Merry Christmas to all and a peaceful New Year!

I'm falling down on my daily duty here, now that things are looking up. The was the best day yet for the patient. He even drove himself out to the grocery store in search of apricot nectar. I officially cancelled my trip west and we already have an invitation for Christmas dinner. I think that with lots of rest and sensible eating Paul will be his old self again. Thanks to everybody for your concern and good wishes.

A very happy Belated Birthday wishes to the Birthday Boys.
I feel much better knowing that my brother is home and in the tender care of his Bride.
Thankyou Scott for the explanation of the problem.
Also thankyou for the dinner invitation, if we lived closer we'd take you up on it.
We are nearing the end of settling the estate. Closing on the house on 12/30; go to court in early January and it will be the end of what has been a very painfull time for us.
Karen bought Sue's car which made us very happy because it still is in the family.
Wishing you all a happy Christmas and a Gentle New Year...Love, Naki

Happy Birthday to Scott. (You can tell who the early risers are.)Scott, next year let's celebrate your half-birthday, on June 19, instead of your birthday, so you won't get squeezed in-between Steve and Christmas.

Paul had a good first-night-home so I guess the crisis is over. He says he plans to eat light for awhile. He looks good at his "running weight."

Thank you all, for the birthday wishes. I had a very peaceful and happy birthday. I got a very nice fondue set from my children, and had a very nice Greek dinner with Tim and Ana. And to top it off, I got the best present of all, my Dad came home from the hospital. We're here to love ya' Dad, so get well quick so we call all head east. And lest I forget, let me be the first to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SCOTT! I can say that because on the east coast, his birthday is already happening. And Happy Holidays to all. §

Just spoke with my Mom, who says Dad is doing well, and will hopefully be going home later today. He was re-admitted because of an ileus - i.e. sluggish bowels related to the recent surgery - not unusual after abdominal surgery.

Looking forward to having family over for dinner this Sunday, including 2 of my sisters. Anyone else who would like to come is welcome. Peter? Naki and Lee? Send me an email if interested and I'll send you directions: scott@stylos.net

Hello to all. I am concerned about my brother. What is up? Why is he back in the hospital? When will he be home? Please let me know what is going on.

I tend to be overly concerned about things but I was
taken by surprise when I heard he was back in the hospital, so this really threw me for a loop.

Hi Buddy: I am glad you are home from the hospital.
You must take it easy recupperating, you are in the tough time of healing now. Don't over due it. You probably think you are stronger than you are.

We are ok. It has been hard and I know we will have to learn to live with this unbearable pain. The love and support we have received from the family has been of great comfort to us. Let us give a cheer for e-mail!!!!

I am not sending Christmas cards this year so let me wish everyone "Joy in your life". Thank you for all your love and support. I couldn't have come this far without it. Naki

Well, Sue, we all got lucky when Dick won your heart! Congratulations on the impending arrival to the Kevin Straley family!!

Betsy, David and I just got home with a beautiful Grand Fir. We have a tree farm about a mile and a half from our house - this great old Norwegian guy runs it, and it's a highlight of our Christmas festivities, going for the tree. This year we even have a tree stand that works well!!

Last night my band played at a (very small) private party, and we actually sounded pretty good. I'm having lots of fun, and after a year, I'm starting to get the hang of this bass thing. Fingers, arms, knees are sore today, though. And I'm pretty exhausted (caught the 1AM ferry home). But exhausted in a good way.

The weekend's here, so all of you with a 5-day a week job, rejoice. Then go finish your Christmas shopping if you're not one of the growing number of people opting out of the December frenzy.

Buddy is recuperating well. He has a track marked out in the house that he walks to get his exercise. The weather is too wet and too cold to be outside.

Only a week or so until the days start getting longer. (Doesn't that sound better than "the first day of winter"?)

Hi Uncle Buddy! Sorry to hear about your illness! I am glad that you are now back at home with all the comforts you enjoy. I know that Aunt Ramona will make sure that you do not overdue it to early. You are in great hands! Relax and enjoy her pampering!

Naki I never heard that story about the date of the first snow storm would determine the number of days of actually snow. I will have to keep track of it though! Hopefully we will get some more snow tomorrow but I think it might be rain instead.

After five lovely days in the hospital I am HOME. I have been carefuly kept and am in reasonable good spirits. I must say it is fun to read these messages and it makes up for a lot of lost communication in the past. I especially like reading the Naki messages and do not worry naki i will be there with you. Now for a little more rest then a little work then a check up with the doc, then the visit to the north. Hell, I guess I realy have it made, and by the way have I ever told you all that I really love you If not then it is done.

Phones are working again. I'm still not sure what the trouble was.

The lab report following Paul's surgery was, as the doctor put it, neither the best nor the worst: he had a carcinoid tumor on the small intestine. It looks like it was all removed, but there will likely be further tests to make sure it is totally clear. In the meantime the wound is healing fine, he's up and about, eating ice-cream and gathering a fan club from among the nurses and attendants. He may come home today or tomorrow.

I understand Mom's phone is out of order. I'm glad to see that she is checking the cables first. That's usually what it is. I'm in Minnesota. It's not too cold here. Actually, I am at the airport. I'll be in SF for the rest of the week in case anyone is looking for me. Doesn't look like Ana and I will be coming east for Christmas. But our plans to go to Greece in February are still on. So.....Get Well Quick, Dad! I'm sure that you will be doing that anyway. Hopefully in time to see the Patriots repeat in the Superbowl. §

I spoke with Buddy tonight. He was groggy and I didn't want to press him into talking, so I will call him tomorrow or Tuesday.

There is just to much happening to this family. I used to have a reocurring nighmare years ago that everyone in the family died and I was the only one left. The nighmare is returning and I now have to live with two. Naki

This all sounds like good news, Mom. Glad to know Dad is recovering well and in good hands. So Mona, what is the Ping update?
Paula
Sunday, December 08, 2002 at 05:39:48 (PST)
Here's the update: The reluctant patient is still feeling fairly miserable, primarily in the area of the incision, but they do give him pain-killers to make it bearable. He sat up in a chair for a while today, and walked down the hall with the aid of 2 nurses. He is not allowed any food or drink by mouth and he hates the dry mouth part. The surgeon and his regular doctor saw him today, but they came between my visits. They all say he's doing fine, but he can't understand why he feels so weak. (I think he has overly-rosy memories of what recovery was like after his last surgery.)There are fewer patients than usual so he gets lots of attention, and the nurses and CNAs are all very nice. Watch this space for tomorrow's report.
Ramona
Saturday, December 07, 2002 at 16:43:49 (PST)
Okay, Mom, where is the update?
Paula
Saturday, December 07, 2002 at 14:07:08 (PST)
To all of you who don't already know: Paul (aka Buddy) is in the hospital here in Brevard, having undergone emergency surgery yesterday to remove an intestinal blockage that had developed, probably due to scar tissue from previous surgery. He was in intense pain for some hours before the surgeon applied her expertise, and then assured us that he should be making a full recovery after some days of recuperation. Our Christmas plans are, at this point, uncertain, and will depend on how quickly the Golden Greek bounces back.

I will continue to report on his progress.

We are snowed in here in the NE. I heard a horrible "Yankee" prediction today at work. The saying is "what ever the date of the first snow fall is the amount of snow storms we'll have for the winter." We are in for 27 snow "days" Ouch. Naki

No, we are not without power, but if that should happen we are ready with firewood and condles. Often we get better weather that those to the north, south, east and west of us. Maybe that accounts for the smugness Brevardians sometimes display--we tend to think we're special, or blessed or just plain lucky.
Ramona
Thursday, December 05, 2002 at 13:08:06 (PST)
We saw Brevard on the national news the other day (night?) -- showing how the town is all lit up, and something about people donating funds to keep the electricity coming? Then this morning, on the radio, I heard about massive power outages in NC -- is that in your area? (of course, if it is, I guess you won't be reading this!)
mona

We're here in a winter wonder-land, taking a break from normal activities since most things, including schools and such, are closed. Tomorrow looks like more of the same, so we may get Christmas cards written or cookies made or whatever the winter weather inspires. All this white stuff should be cleared out by Saturday in time for Brevard's Twilight Tour, an annual event with all kinds of festive things happening downtown. Small town living does have its charm!

Greetings to everyone from Halima, Mary and Alex.
They are well. Mary looks better than I have seen her look for a very long time. Except for a weekness in her right arm and hand she feels very good and seems to be in good spirits. Alex adores her and they sort of watch out for each other.
Alex is nine years old now. He is a well adjusted young man dispite all the disruptions and changes he has had to deal with. No army brat is he.
I wish you all a healthy holiday season and love, Naki

Hello every body. FYI we set up a web site for Christines Lullaby. The Song is beautiful, it captures the essence of who she was. I have to admit I heard it once and cried so hard for so long I just can't listen to it right now. Not for awhile any way. One day I know I will be stronger and I will be able to do it:

What a beautiful gift this young man gave us.
Have a great holiday to all and much love, Naki

Thanks for the update, Tilli. I've decided not to go to Juneau. I'm glad that the family will be well-represented. Be sure to tell Mickey, Karl and Alan that they are welcome to stop by Seattle on the way home.

Tim and Ana and me are just putzing around the house for the weekend. We rebuilt the woodshed and installed some new computer games. Looking forward to a low key Thanksgiving in Portland. Hope everyone is well...§

Hello Everyone,
Please bear with me as this is a first time for me. I just wanted to update you on arrangements for Paul. Mickey called last night. He, Karl and Alan are in Juneau with Kim and her family. There is going to be a viewing Sunday and a memorial service Monday. Paul's obituary is in the JuneauEmpire.com

They are planning to have a memorial service back here once they have had a chance to discuss it with Kim.

I'm glad we all had a chance visit with Paul while he was out here last month. Paul was a very warm and special person.

Take care of yourselves. Love, Tilli

Hey darlin....I hope ur David is ok soon. I hate that you are missing so much sleep and work. I know the strain you are under. Just count to 10 and think of the lovely sun 'n sand on the lovely gulf beaches and relax a moment. Just call it albert's therapy;)) Get well soon David.

Thanks for keeping us in mind, Leo...and for the poem and touching words...one of the most moving things I have read...things we love but don't understand...that really rings true...to appreciate something without feeling the the need to "understand" it...can open new doors.

Also what Naki said rings true for me...that long delayed trip to Alaska...wouldn't be the same anymore...but am still grateful for any chances to connect with loved ones scattered about here and there.

Hoping to see you, Leo, and other members of the family sometime soon.

Best wishes to Ping. Hope those doctors are at least keeping you pain-free.

That is a wonderful picture of Paul...it looks so much like I remember him, so handsome.

David's been in and out of the hospital and the clinic, with a blood clot in his other leg, and much pain, since last Sunday night. I know he hates for me to talk about him, but I hope you will keep him in your thoughts. He's awfully important to us. I've been missing too much work and too much sleep. I'm looking forward to a nice quite Thanksgiving break next week, to tell you the truth.

Naki, (I knew what you meant about "Wow", but Wow Aunt seemed to fit you so well, anyhow, so I used it!) will you send me contact info for Halima? I hope you have a good trip, and will give my love to Mary and Halima and Alex.

Dear family: I find myself greiving once again and I just don't know what to say. Paul and I talked to the wee hours of the night of those so long ago when we were kids. The recollection of bitter sweet days.
I am so happy we got to see eachother one more time.
Sorry that Lee, Peter, Sue and I never made the trip to Alaska we talked about so many times. It was always next year we would do it. Life takes us on these journeys and we should know do it now for there may not be a next year, or even a next day.
My love to Mickey, Allen, Carl and Leo. Even though we were physically far apart through these years, you have always been in my thoughts. You guys were the biggest part of my life as we grew up together.
Me the AUNT that was a big WOW!!!
Steve if you are thinking of going to Alaska try for the airlines berievement rate. It may be more affordable. You already may know about such an offer but I mention it just incase you don't. Naki

The Wind Hover : Gerard Manley Hopkins

I caught this morning morning's minion, kingdom of daylight's dauphin, dapple dawn drawn Falcon, in his riding

Of the rolling level underneath him steady air, and striding

High there, how he rung upon the rein of a wimpling wing
In his ecstacy! then off, off forth on swing.
As a skate's heel sweeps smooth on bow-bend: the hurl and the gliding
Rebuffed the big wind. My heart in hiding
Stirred for a bird,--the achieve of, the mastery of the thing!

Brute beauty and valour and act, oh, air, pride, plume, here

Buckle! AND the fire that breaks from thee then, a billion
Times told lovelier, more dangerous, O my chevalier!

No wonder of it: sheer plod makes plough down sillion
Shine, and blue-bleak embers, ah my dear
Fall, gall themselves, and gash gold-vermillion.

Somewhere in the 1970's me and my brother were talking about school and poetry...always loved the stuff never had much exposure to it....and he told me about a poem he read in his class either at merrit or Sn Francisco State. and he discussed and read this poem to me. The poem above. I memorized this poem and it is always with me...he showed me through this poem how to read and love something i loved but didn't understand...since then i glow with many poems i read and understood....My uncle Buddy did a similar thing around the same time...with reading MacBeth....just a thought on two people in my life who gave me these great Gifts...thats all I need to say I think of them both a lot and how they influenced those great things in me this is the thing of God

Thank God for ((((Andrea))))'s good news. Maybe the only thing that can make things better, these beautiful new souls that come to us...

I think with sadness at the loss of young David, and send my love to his parents and sister and brother.

And I send out daily prayers (because it is in my beliefs) for our Peter Watts, and for Rona and Artie and the Mosers.

And I am just devastated to hear about Paul Helmar. Floored really. This is so sad...

Everyone, do take care, and do know I love you.

you really never know how to accept the news that someone you loved has passed away. I only hope that Paul knew how special he was. It seems always apropiate to say that, but in thus case it is ph so true. Although it is against my beliefs, I hope and pray there is a heaven and all are greeting Paul.
good bye Paul, your memory lives on.

What terrible news from Alaska. Paul seemed so healthy when we saw him last month. And he was looking so forward to the future. Death is always such a shock, and always touches that same spot in my stomach. I will always remember Paul as such a gentle, sensitive soul. He was so kind to me when I showed up in Alaska in 1974 with nothing and nobody. His messages on this board were always so welcome. My heart aches. §

Saturday, November 16, 2002 at 06:13:09 (PST)
Yes, a cruise does sound good about now. And in honor of that, we have made our plans to go to Greece, although the only cruising we will be doing is taking a ferry to the islands. We'll go February 13 and return on February 24. So far it's Dad, Ana, Jillian and me. And we are working on the Antibes contingent. Any other takers? Winter arrived a few weeks ago in a matter of minutes, not hours. It started raining for the first time in months and hasn't quit yet. And there is no end in sight. It's all the dark that gets to me. Hope all is where throughout Stylosville...§

Well Scott I am glad for you that Joe is close to getting his license. Jess, is learning how to drive on her learners permit. We have tried the highway, Route 140, a few times in the past few weeks. this voyage brings back memories of learning how to drive back in Newton. Remember those days!
If we get anymore rain I can put a boat in my swamp and take a cruise on it!
I agree cameras can be a pain when you want to relax!

Hi everyone: We got back on 11/1 from riding the high seas. Actually the sea was very calm and the temp was hot. We spent more time on the water than I thought we would, no time in any port to do any sight seeing. We had a great time being with Bill and Ginny, Ned and Barbara and John and Dawn.
No Paula Lee nor I took pictures but everyone else did. Neither of us felt like having the responsibility of keeping track of the camera. Sounds stupid hu? We just wanted to get away with no cares even to look after a camera. Love Naki

Hello to Everyone! I hope everyone has been well. I myself have just finished raking a few truckloads of leaves. The funny thing is it does not look like I accomplished anything. But the Indian Summer morning was nice to enjoy. For some reason it seems like we have more leaves this year than last.
Thanks for all the Bubba memories. Peter thank you for being a part of the day. It would be nice some day to sail on the ocean on a cruise ship-maybe in a few years! The cruise stories that you hear makes it sound like a wondeful adventure.

Busy busy day here - will post more later. Me and Miranda spent the day in the big city - portrait sitting, fancy Thai restaurant and then the Art Museum to see the Frida Kahlo exhibit, (though personally, I got more enjoyment out of the Ancient Greece exhibit).

All's well. Yes, we are relations of the Maine Pingree's (who just gifted the New England Forestry Foundation w/ 10 million acres of forest land). Also the Pingree's of Salem, if you ever happen by that way, be sure to visit the Pingree House. And of course, the Pingree's of Newton, whose fortune eventually went to the Fessendens - like they really needed it. Long, interesting, sad story.

My best wishes have already been sent along to our dear Anastasia Kandis Stylos.

And I would also like to inquire about Mark's 'new profession??

And I will allways wish you both the best of everything. And Miranda If you go into politics, you would be as good as the Pingree's in Maine. looking forward to the dark rainy cold weather my wife Kim had been reporting but was pleasantly surprised at the Indian summer conditions- partially clear warm sunshine except around the glaciers which were producing fog. The Mendenhall Glacier sits at the primary entrance to the airport runway in Juneau. We spent a day in Yakutat walking around where it was warm and sunny with coho salmon in the streams and the Fairweather Range glowing in the distance.
We had a great time with my son Leo for week in New York City and Boston- the most fun was finding some batting cages on Long Island near JFK airport. Leo hit so many balls he ended up with a giant blister on his left hand. We sent him off to Europe with his pal, Jarrod. They have Eurrail passes with an end goal of Greece and Fillipiaou.
The final week visiting: Lee and Naki in Easton where even though they are still struggling over their castrophic losses they were kind and gracious with their visitors. Kathy provided a great spaghetti dinner, cooked to Uncle Peter's and Uncle Buddy's specifications (no onions or garlic), Steve, Uncle Lee, Mark and the girls all joined in the feast. On to Bill and Jenny's place where we met Alex, Monique and the twins an were treated royally

We fell back. We got a startling reminder of how many things we own that depend on us to tell them what time it is. (Then, for the next half a year, they will tell us.) And finally, after 6 months, the clock in my car shows the right time.

Well I was in Northampton yesterday, but was sadly missed too. Perhaps. I visited Jess in her wonderful new place, and then down to Northampton (passing Melinda going North on 91 while I was headed South) to have dinner with old friend. A beautiful fall day today, but over all too soon. Did we all fall back?

Thank you, sweetheart Athena. I guess I just wanted to hear it. My weakness, I guess.

...been thinking about all the stories I could tell about 60 Montvale. From the time lightening struck the rock out back, leaving a crack that was filled w/ dirt and a tree grew out of....to the whole *thing* about the 3rd floor....to the time I went to the "Newton Room" at the library and saw the Plat Book, that showed how the lots on Montvale came to be, in what order, with "Bishop's Creek" originally flowing through the Carriage House of the Greenberger's (that Betsy Matthews and her mom lived in", to the day, Athena's Birthday! when we took down the dividing wals, and on and on...maybe I'll write a book someday.

Fall back (don't spring forward) tonight.

I can answer that last question: yes, Athena is home. She called after she arrived on Sunday. Scott, you will be pleased with the new woodshed. We'll go over Friday to close the cabin up for the winter. I have left orders with Jim, our local do-it-all man to put down more gravel in the parking area, carry off the load of junk that we put together, give the good lumber to the Arthur Morgan School (Athena saved out 20 or so pieces)and demolish the white shed. When spring comes again we'll be ready to start other projects, like the floor and making a sitting area and fire pit where the white shed sat for so long.
The leaves have finally revealed their bright colors and they're beautiful. Maybe (or maybe not) as lovely as Vermont.

Yes, Mona, Seth still owns the place but does not live there. I'm on the first floor. Next week I get a DSL line. O Boy! Still haven't figured out where to put the computer though. Plus I need to get another bed, for the guest room.

Is Athena home yet?

Well, my trip is winding down. I leave for Seattle early tomorrow. I had a most interesting day yesterday. I drove by Montvale Road and ran into the young developer who has purchased it with his wife and is restoring/renovating it. Reg was very accomodating, and gave me a tour. In some ways it is unrecognizable, and other ways is very much the same. It still has that feeling of a good, old house. The backyard has been leveled. More than 3,000,000 pounds of rock was removed. The patio has been removed and a large family room, off the soon to be gourmet kitchen, is being built there. The sun room has is being restored. The back stairs havfe been enclosed, and the bathroom downstairs moved over some. Upstairs, the space has been used in combination part of the a few other rooms to become a large master bedroom. The room over the sunroom will be part of the master bedroom suite, and the center room on the McSweeney side will be the closet and master bath. The front/center bathroom is being expanded. The two third floor rooms on the front side have been combined for a large bedroom. Scott's wallpaper is still up, but not for long.

Perhaps the most amazing thing, though, is that the cellar door is intact. The family height history is still there! The last owners painted around the wall markings. I am hoping that Paula will go over and take some photos before that part is covered up. The house is slated to be finished soon after Christmas. If anyone is interested in talking to the current owner, let me know and I will provide his address/phone. He was very eager to learn the history of house.

I had a nice visit yesterday with the Comenitz's and the Friedmans, including Mickey, Bud and Beth. My next post will be from Seattle....§

Saturday, October 19, 2002 at 05:00:36 (PDT)
It feels like it is still my birthday since I just got back from the wilds of Celo and found all these wonderful birthday wishes. Thanks to one and ALL! I had a really good birthday. Athena and her friends cooked me a good dinner and made a birthday pie for dessert. (The hot pie melted the candles.) We worked during the day on the woodshed which was beginning to take shape. (It is now finished and beautiful.)

Among the unplanned events of the week were: dealing with a swarm of "borer bees" INSIDE the cabin. (Only one sting). The 7 mice that had to be taught a lesson were not planned for, but not unexpected, either. And then today, as we were getting ready to come back to Brevard, Athena turned her ankle (again!) and is now limping around, using two sticks as crutches. She says it's not as bad as the sprain she got here 3 years ago.

I'm sorry I missed the get-togethers up north but there will be other times...Thank you to all who keep this message board fun to read. And thanks to Mark who maintains, edits (and occasionally censors) the postings.

This message is in response to my last post. Hello from Scott's house! Hello, that is, from Paul, Pam, Scott, Cameron, Joe, Melissa and Steve. We had a very nice Chinese dinner and are now watching Melissa, Dad and Scott play cribbage. Yes, it's a bit like watching paint dry. Dad and I had a very nice long drive through the Vermont foliage, capped off with a visit with Jessamyn in her nice apartment. Who would have thought she would end up being such a homemaker and a hostess. Tomorrow it is off to Connecticut to see Peter (and maybe Naki and Lee) and Kathy. Then back to Boston for the weekend, the back to the great North Wet. Keep those cards and letters coming....§

Well, after quite an adventurous trip from San Francisco to Falmouth, I finally made it to Doug's wedding. Unfortunately, it was well after the "I do's" and the "Now, therefore's". But in plenty of time to share in the celebration, and to have a nice long visit with Doug and Steph. They were both glowing. And I don't think it was the alcohol alone. I'm at Bill & Ginny's now, and will head to the Vineyard later. We'll keep you posted, so to speak. §

My house and cat are in the capable hands of young Tim. I haven't done any trial work in awhile, so wish me luck. And yes, Paula, of course you are on my schedule. Not too much news from the east side of the Puget Sound. I'm busy getting ready for my trial which is scheduled to go from Wednesday until Friday. Then I'll catch a redeye to Boston on Friday night, hopefully in time to make it to Doug's wedding on Saturday morning in Falmouth. I'll probably spend the next week in New England (probably Boston and Martha's Vineyard), then return to Seattle on October 20th. Ana's arm/shoulder is healing up on schedule. She says it doesn't hurt anymore. We are spending the day making up the homework she missed while she was invalidated and sedated. Of course we on the west coast are enjoying seeing the Yankees squirm. Hope you are all well, and that I get to see many of you soon...§

Good morning, my fellow fellows!

The rains have returned to the Northwest, and boy am I glad of it! Mornings are dark, but that's OK - sure do love the turning of the seasons. We're having an especially colorful fall, for some reason.

Miranda has chosen to 'take some time off', working 2 jobs and trying to make a dent in her car loan (not her car), so she can go back to school w/o the worry of all that debt hanging over her head. As I type, she's sleeping peacefully, as only a teenager can do.

Betsy started horse riding lessons again. She's very good at it (or so I'm told), and really loves it. It gives you an amazing boost of confidence, to be able to control such a huge animal. What's the saying? "The outsides of a horse is good for the insides of a man"...or something like that.

And Paul has taken to Jr High School like a duck to water. Dresses stylish. Has 2nd chair in the (very competitive) band. We get to hear him practice at home, at night, and he sounds great. Satchmo would be proud! His heart's desire is to buy a Playstation 2, but until he learns to take care of what he already has a little better, (OK, a LOT better), I'm afraid that's just a pipe dream.

David and I are both terribly busy at work. Which I guess is better than not having work to be busy at. But not much better. :)

My love to all!

The morning was spent with Jerome and Vanessa around the house, the afternoon we had Jerome's party with many of his friends, and the evening I went out to dinner and drinks in Cannes with two of my favorite friends. I think to ask for anything better would have been too selfish! I hope you all can be as lucky as I am when your turn comes.

Yes, Peter was our family. We lost a whole branch of our family tree. And it has left so much pain in the hearts of so many people I love. My words fall short of what I mean...

I hope you will keep writing here, Naki. Your words are very important. I'm sending out some mail (post) to you this week, keep an eye out.

And I keep a special prayer in my heart for our other (((Peter))) (Watts).

I wanted to post this obit on the Stylos page because Peter was our family. I noticed a couple of miss prints and an omission of 'll and ". I am sure it will be understood anyway. I don't know how to make correction after the message has been sent or even if it can be done, being the late hour that it is I couldn't ask for help from Lee.
Steve there is no time table for gief. Some can come to terms with it sooner than others some not at all. As for the Hanson Family we will have SOME relief from this pain when we see justice. I weep for the 3,000 victims of this horrendos murder. How terrifiying those last moments of their lives were. I weep for the survivors, the wives, children, mothers and fathers who must face the rest of their days without them. Already I have seen families broken apart and marriages faltering...grief to much to share...to much to comfort...Life is very very unfair...We were so happy...we had so much to look forward together. What a loss for so many....Naki

It was Ana's right shoulder. She'll be able to do her homework, but it happened on the day she was supposed to take her first trumpet lesson. Don't think she'll be doing that for awhile. She is resting now, but she gets up every four hours or so to ask for more pain medication. Hope everyone else is feeling better than that. §

Welcome to the Message Board, Naki! You've always been here in spirit.

I got a call from Ana's school today, saying that she had fallen off of the jungle gym. I picked her up and took her to the ER and she has a broken shoulder. It was in a good place (not on the growth plane) so she should be fine. She'll be in a sling for the next six weeks or so. I was figuring when six weeks would be for her. It turns out it will be Halloween night. Too bad, she had just decided that she would dress up as a patient that night. So, I guess it's back to being a spider. §

Hi Buddy: You'll always by my Buddy. I read your message and it reminded me of the day I went to Boston to meet Peter to help him pick out an engagement ring for Sue. It was a cold December night and he had forgotten where he parked the car. We walked for about an hour through Washington St., et al. Found it and went to the North End for dinner.
Sitting there shivering I told Peter how you used to sell newspapers and in the winter had only a jacket to wear...he said, "Mom nobody could survive out in that cold wearing a slight jacket". Naki

I was very heartened to see your message Naki. In fact I must tell you tears flowed as I read. I do not know exactly why but many thoughts ran through my mind including the many times I would kiss your hand for good luck as I went out to sell papers. Yes I was proud of you and thanked the folks for the many things I had failed to thank them for long ago. My computer broke down and I am waiting for the new one that Steven sent me. When I get it I will write a long email

Thank you all for your messages of encouragement this last year. I am sorry I haven't responded but I am sure you understand why I couldn't.
The pain of loss hasn't gotten any easier, in fact it has become somewhat worse, I think because the numbness has worn off and I know they are gone.
Peter, Sue and yes even Christine,in those two and a half short years, danced through life. They enjoyed it with sharing their love, caring and giving. They loved the beauty of the earth, the mystery of the Heavens, the moon and the stars. The butterfly was so special for Christine. When ever I see one I feel she is visiting me.
Mostly they loved each other and family.
Sue used to tell us to take care of ourselves because we had to be around a long time for Christine....Grandparents are special and they loved us.
They died together, this is the only way it had to happen. They belonged to eachother. But oh, how I miss them. What we shard was so special, the pain of knowing I will never be with them again is unbearable. I love you all and thank you so much for caring and being my family, I have been blessed by this. Now that you have my E-Mail I hope to hear from you personally.. Me agape' Naki

It was certainly a day to think about Peter, Sue and Christine, but I spent just as much time thinking about Naki, Lee & Kathy. I think that I decided after Jerry died that death is worse for those left behind than for those passing on. But in retrospect, there can't be any doubt that the 1969 tragedy served as a catalyst to bring our family much closer together, and to take the dys out of dysfunctional. It will be years before the true impact of the 2001 tragedy on ourselves, our family and the nation is understood. I have found in dealing with grief that the one year mark can really be a turning point. Here's hoping that the healing accelerates for Kathy, Lee & Naki, and the rest of us as well. Love and peace to all...§

most of my weekend has been consumed with trying to come up with a new trumpet for Paul before the school year starts -- I'm not done yet!

Not too much in the way of news in Seattle. Ana is at Lake Tahoe with her mom, she'll get back on Tuesday and go right from the airport to her first day of 5th grade. I have spent the day building a compost bin. I'll put the finishing touches on tomorrow. Next week, Ana and I will go to the Puyallup Fair. Mona, let me know if Paul and Betsy want to come along. I'm hoping I can settle my California case. A long slow drive through the New England foliage is very tempting. Darkness seems to be coming earlier and earlier. I think that fall is truly falling. News? I guess you already gave ours, Mom. Jessamyn an official Brattleborian (with a lovely apartment), Melinda back to Smith Tuesday (having just about recovered from Coxsackie Virus), and Mark and I (with the help of Scott) are headed about as far East as we can go. Only three cats will remain as Otis is moving with Jess (whew!). I just spoke to Athena who talked with me all the way to work. She sounded happy. It is a beautiful Fall day here. Saturday, August 31, 2002 at 11:48:09 (PDT)
Well, I guess everybody is out mowing the lawn or whatever it is you're supposed to be doing on the weekend of Labor Day. Not Paula, who is in the midst of getting Jess settled into an apartment in Brattleboro, and Melinda ready to go back to her dorm in Northampton and the two them--P and M--moved (part-time)into Boston. So that leaves 3, or is it 4? cats to occupy the Acton house. Anyway, nobody's writing so I guess I must. We have no news to report; staying off the roads until Tuesday.

Mona, give us a report on Miranda. Has she started her adventure in higher education yet? And I haven't heard how the Shakespeare production was. Say something, you guys out in Worthington. Athena seems to have disappeared off the radar screen, but that has happened before...Mark, how about something from the European front? Am I talking to myself here?

Yankee, huh? I remember a hot summer night in Ohio about 40 years ago, when my brothers and I walked to a drive-in movie with Becky and a crowd of her friends, Somewhere during intermission (remember those great intermissions ?) one of them said "How come y'all sound like John Kennedy?" to which our clever retort was "At least WE don't sound like Lyndon Johnson". Where do these memories come from?

Yankee? Albert, it's been a long time since you were north if you think that is Yankee. Welcome back to the family, by the way. As one who has know Becky for half a century, let me assure you that will be very proud. I also enjoyed her southern/midwest accent, though.

Meanwhile, summer continues to creep to its close here. School starts in eight days. Ana and I have been out doing back-to-school shopping. What a zoo. Mark, Ana's vacation is from April 12-21. That's when we plan to go to Greece. When are J&V off? We could take some time on either side to make it work. What are your thoughts? And anyone else who is interested in making the pilgrimage with Dad. §

Mona....(Pingree variety;))

thanks sooooo much for that wonderful email. Oh, don't worry...I will answer it personally, but I just wanted to let Ramona and Paul know, (as if they didn't) what a sweet and wonderful child that #6 is!!
Yep, you do live close to my old stomping grounds. We wandered all over that area for almost 3 years back in the mid/late 60's, and the stuff I put in that book of mine doesn't cover any but the most vivid memories. Ann and I just loved that area...and we even owned a home there, and never sold it until 1974 or so. My Ann has hated me ever since......cause she so loved that area. Anyway we did...and now live down on the Gulf coast of Mississippi....and if you and your hubby...or any of your clan are ever within distance...come spend a week with us. We would love to see, meet and hug all our neices and nephews. Ramona and Paul have made me feel like I am a member of the family, even thought I know it is a reach from a distant past. Anyway....Thanks so much again for your very sweet letter. Will be in touch tonight.

Hi Paula,
As to what I have been doing all these years, please view my web site at http://e9usn.com which I designed and put together a few years ago to counter the reputation of that NY scoundrel, the Rev. Al Sharpton...of whom I claim no friendship nor kinship. Oh I have another web site also that might be of interest... http://sharpton.org There I have dabbled with some genealogy of the Sharpton family and posted a few items of interest. There are pix on both sites, more on the e9 site I suppose. Besides Rebecca, I am the father of 4 children with Ann...my wife of 47 years. Ann and I were married in 1955, and the story of that is well told on both those web sites. It is, if I may say so, a very good read....even the hard hearts have been known to shed a few tears along with some peals of laughter. Now my writing has not the elan of ur mothers writings, but I do manage to convey my thoughts (Who ever told that dumb farm boy he could write??).

Paula, should you have more questions, pleae convey them either here, or to me at one of my email addresses, one being albert@e9usn.us

I know I may have been dominating the subject matter here, and I sure don't want to be seen as an interloper into your family message board. I think this is a wonderful idea and I wish I had had this idea myself, since reading all the hijinks here, you all have made me jealous;)) My daughters are Laura in Wooster, Ohio...well Apple Creek really...they have a small farm there, but they operate a tax consulting business in Wooster. My other daughter Jan (Jazz) lives in Thornton, CO, a burb of Denver. She is a consultant for Solbourne, a consutling firm specializing in provisioning SAP and Oracle mega-databases. She graduated from Brenau College in Georgia with a magna cum laude in Business Admin (BS). We also have two sons, Charles who is a woodworker of fine crafts, and a Harley enthusiast..and Wayne who graduated from USM (South Mississippi) with a bs in Computer Science. He is employed by Northrup-Grumman as an IT (Information Tech) specialist here in Pascagoula at their shipyard. PS..also have a yorkie named Coventry who is my baby.

wowowo what a long letter.....

Isn't it good to have a new drama, a new topic of conversation on this board? Stay tuned for further developments...Or jump in with your own questions and comments. Imagine, having family connections way down on the Mississippi gulf coast!

And to those of you who are wondering about Risse's middle name, which started out as Fay: Sometime when we were all studying Spanish she decided that FE looked more exotic than FAY (they're pronounced the same) so she started using that. Later she used Layne as her middle name. Al and I have talked on the phone, and Becky and I have talked in person and now I'm hoping for an eventual "father and child reunion." It's about time!

Hiiii there Paul, Ramona and family....

I am at a loss for words at how to initiate this letter and make myself known to most of you. Oh, I am known to Paul and Ramona....cause I am as young as they are!!! Paul....thank you so much for your letter of last evening......and dear Ramona........your letter of this evening floored me.....and flooded me with such wonderful memories of the past....and our fun times at Berea.....

There is nothing like reuniting with a member of your family, and this was truly, to be a tad inane, albert shattering!!!!

For all of you who are dying to know who this interloper into these quiet, pastoral pages!!! I am Albert Sharpton, ex-husband of Risse Re....oh so many years ago....like 52 or so.

I have been adrift from you two for so long. Well the words just won't come....but I love all of you...

Hey there, Stylos gang! I just had a wonderful visit with Athena and Amy in Vancouver BC up here in the wilds of Canada (I even emailed pictures to your webmaster)! She is a shining star, what a wonderful friend she is! You are all so lucky to get to be part of her constellation! I can't wait for the next appearance in our night sky! Laurence and I had a great time teaching them how to shuck oysters and wrestle pugs! Hurry back soon!

Wonderful, Mom. Just think of the band we can put together next summer. The news from here is that it is hot again. It hit 100 this week, and I felt every degree. Jess is in VT with several leads on a place to live and a job, Melinda moves back to Smith on September 3rd, our Beacon Hill apartment is ours as of September 1, so now I am looking about. Southern NH at the foot of Mt Manadnock? Gloucester? Northampton? Decisions, decisions. The whole world is at our feet.

In the interest of not letting one message stay too long on top, I will check in with no news to report, no plans to talk about, and no complaints to make. Oh, yes. One thing is new: I started taking banjo lessons yesterday. It's great. So unlike the quiet and soothing harp and dulcimer, the banjo is rowdy and boisterous. Do you think maybe my personlity is changing? I have rejected the Blue Grass style of finger-picking in favor of the "old-timey" claw-hammer way of doing it. Hot dawg!

Good for you, Paula and Mark. I think it's a good idea to rent for awhile while the market settles down. Besides, it will give you an idea if it is something that you really want to do. I'd say that it will entice both Dad and I to make even more trips to Boston, but once every few months is probably plenty. See you in a few months....§

Sounds like a great time is being had by all in Seattle.....perhaps this is the year I actually make it. Which is the most beautiful season there?

Big Stylos-Allan news is the we are now the proud lease holders of an apartment on Beacon Hill. Who would have imagined? Starts September 1, and we expect lots of visitors. The first thing we are buying is a comfortable sofa bed. Highlights of the apartment are its location (walk to the swan boats, the Esplanade, Charles St T stop, Newbury Street etc.) and a working fireplace and a private rooftop deck. Now on to look for our country home......

It's turned into a very pleasant summer in Seattle. And very nice to have Athena and Amy aboard for part of it. Ana is away at camp in the San Juan Islands, hopefully brushing up on her French. To me, this seems like a perfect weekend to lounge around on the deck and watch the flowers grow. Hope summer is as nice everywhere as it has been here. §

I guess I better put up a message quick before Mom gets home and finds her message still on top. Sounds like fun camping in the bus. I want to do that one of these days.

Had all 4 of my kids for dinner last night - that was fun. Jeff was in town to meet with his advisor at UMass. He's going to do a few weeks of his research and then??

Melissa starts theater camp tomorrow. The big performance is on August 24 (Sat), and there may also be one on August 21 (Wed). Get in touch with me if you might be able to come. The Merry Wives of Windsor.

I trust the west coast family is showing A and A a good time, and vice versa. Bring me home a treat! (smoked salmon is always nice)

it's all true what mona says : we had such a beautiful trip tho the ocean (cold water, hot sand) with betsy and post birthday boy paul and a kite. Mona did all the driving and most of the singing. We all loved the enormous and dramatic rainforest, mom i kept thinking how much you would have liked it, the moss dripping from the trees, the huge cedars and douglas firs, the ancient nurser logs with the 600 year old nurslings growing out of them. After a while the nurse log disappears and the other trees are left on the stilts of their roots, leaving a phantom image of the original log ... oh and did i meantion the blackberry feasts? Out here they think of them as weeds .... The Pingrees have been splendid hosts everyone, and yes, there has been lots of giggling all around. Now we are at Steve's house where we have been eating like queens and staying up all night playing "spider" (amy) and playing with the kid's walkie talkies (athena) playing with all the toys in steve's new house. Come on out! (Did i mention i'm wearing a sweater? after weeks of solid humidity and heat in massachusetts this is quite amazing) so, yeah, seattle is everything we hoped, soon we will find out about portland and we hope vancouver. There. Have i written enough to boot that silly person with their pyramid scheme off the screen? My brother mark will take care of you as soon as he gets to work tomorrow, miss(ter) verdad! Hope everyone is well and staying cool. Got your kiddie pool out yet, paulala?

My sympathy goes to Melinda with her very swollen jaw. And also to Jess out in the hot sun. (Such things go easier in the cool of the morning.) No sympathy for Mark cruising about town or wherever, but why aren't you out there, too? I am trying to throw things away, not too successfully. So far, just some newspapers and junk mail.

Meantime, Athena and Amy are in the next room giggling, and I'm plotting to take a second day off work and whisk them away to the ocean and the rainforest....hee hee (don't tell my boss)(OK, I'll tell my boss)

We had a great time at the ballgame last night - saw an impressive come from behind win, some good stirfry from The Intentional Wok (get it?), Paul got to look at the store with all the autographed memorabilia, watched a great sunset, saw the pregame fly by of some cool jets -- a lovely day!

The only interesting thing here is that we are getting a bumper crop of big red tomatoes on the 6 plants beside our garage door. Maybe I'll live on gazpacho for the rest of the summer.

We made it back to Seattle, safe and sound. We went to ground zero, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty today. Ms. Liberty is still closed as a result of September 11. It makes me wonder who is winning our 'war on terrorism'. It was a great time, but it is always nice to get home. At least before you have to start working that is. Friday, July 26, 2002 at 09:26:46 (PDT)
Thought you folks like to know we met and spoke with Olympia Dukakis this evening. She is in Juneau for a fundraiser for our local theater group and gave a great speech- very personal, interesting and heartfelt. During her speech we found out she was from Lowell then moved to Somerville and then to Arlington. Her Greek family history is very similar to ours. Her parents came to this country about the same time as grandma and grandpa. Her mother came from a small village near Sparta the same as grandma. What a coincidence- those towns she lived in also figure prominently in my life. Following the speech we went to a reception in her honor and my wife Kim managed to get us through the crowd and to enjoy a short conversation with her. When I spoke of these coincidences I think she thought I was putting her on- especially when she told me that her family married into the Kane family and I told her Kane was my other grandmother's maiden name. She shouted "we must be related!" She seemed a very bright and down to earth. Now I have to see some of her movies- I don't remember seeing any of them. We live in a very tiny world. We hope all are well. We are fine. Paul Helmar

Happy Summer to everyone! Mark, Vanessa, and Jerome: it was great seeing you guys, I look forward to seeing you again next summer. And of course there will always be a special place in my heart for the Seattle kids: Pingree and Slattery, even though I don't see them much.

So four of you are in MA already, and four more just left in the bus headed north.

We just heard today about Jim Flaherty. We really have been out of touch! It seems kind of weird: JoAnn died last year while I was in Hawaii, then while I was in Hawaii this year (for only the 3rd time in my life), Jim's time on earth comes to an end. I don't think I'll go to Hawaii any more (though I had a great time this year.)

This is being written on a bradn new computer; I hope it works this well after Mark and Steve are both gone. Steve and Ana fly out tomorrow from Greenville, SC. They will see something of NYC before proceding to the Hub.

The news from the clan at the cabin is that the 3 younger kids went to Rhea's camp and it was fine except that Jerome got stung by a hornet. Twice! Fortunately, Rhea knows magic remedies for such things. Paul made his usual (only better) spaghetti sauce, Jessamyn made cookies (and music), Mark cut down a sizeable tree and I picked a bouquet of black-eyed susans. I won't mention all the Jotto, cribbage, and boggle games. Or maybe I just did...

We have made it to NC. Mark and Steve are in Brevard, and everyone else is at the cabin. Just to make Ana and I feel at home, they have ordered plenty of rain. It's good to be here, and I would think that things will be kind of quiet on this message board, since most of the frequent writers are assembled here.§

Mona, in answer to your question: rain has dogged and bedevilled the Stylos clan for the last several days. There is hope that it will disappear by Monday. Or Tuesday. Right now, 4 of us are at the cabin, 3 of us are here (Brevard) and 4 are on the way from the Greenville, SC airport. I think there will games in front of the fireplace tonight, and music by those who feel so inclined and cooking and eating by all. We will try to stay in touch. Wish you were here.

Great to hear about your successful trip, Mom. Next year in Hawaii! Be ready for the great influx to start as early as Thursday, as I think Dad and Mark are heading south tonight. Scott, Melissa, Jess and I start Thursday am, and Steve arrives Saturday am. Now to go to work half a day, do laundry, pack, water the plants, mow the lawn, clean the house, get tapes from the library, and prepare for a great time.

Here I am, back where I can find a computer and be in touch. I almost got on a computer in a library in Honolulu but I didn't have the requisite library card. Mona and I had a wonderful time. Everything there is SO beautiful! Kate had rented a big house very close to the beach AND with a swimming pool. We did all the touristy things and still had time just to be together, play scrabble and read our own and each others' books.

The trip back to Seattle was smooth and pleasant and Steve was there to meet us. Tomorrow I'll be on the plane again and will reach Asheville before nightfall. I recommend a trip to Hawaii to anyone who is considering it. Aloha

It was a very nice Fourth in Portland. Ana is on a ranch in Eastern Oregon with her Mom. We are indeed getting ready for our trip east. We will be leaving on Friday night. Getting to Greensville/Spartanburg about 11:30 Saturday morning. Mom and Mona must be in Hawaii. From the looks of things, they are either having too much fun or not enough computer to let us know. The rest of my weekend is devoted to working in the yard. At least the weather has cooperated. Can't wait to see everyone...§

Finally, beautiful weather. The heat and humidity have dropped, and it is the weekend. What a great combination. Dad is here, and where are the rest of you? Mom and Mona, are you enjoying the land of sunshine? Steve and Ana must be getting ready for their trip East, and Scott and Melissa preparing for our trip South. Mark, Vanessa and Jerome are enjoying the other Mark's hospitality, and that leaves Athena. Where you are Athena?

Happy Birthday, Melinda Rose. 91? And still getting carded? That's pretty impressive! I got carded at the baseball game last week, I thought it was good at 50. We got hope that your next 19 years will be at least as rewarding as the last 19.

Sounds like lots of Styloses (Styli?) on the road today, all headed west, except for Dad, who is headed north. Kind of like a family version of 'rotate'. Well, let's all keep rotating until we end up at Camp Celo two weeks from today. We're all excited. Hope all is well with all...§

91!?! Have a happy birthday, Melinda, wherever you are. Traveling to NJ to see your other grandmother, I think. We will soon be traveling, too. Buddy will drop me at the Asheville airport on my way to Seattle and points east, then he'll continue north in the newly repaired love-bus. Maybe Mark and kids are in the air now, even as we (I) speak. I'm hoping for pleasant and safe traveling for all of us, so all (or most) of us can convene down here at Camp Celo in mid-July.

Happy Fathers Day to Mona, and Happy Birthday Dad ... or something like that! Not much to report from over here: we are just enjoying the sea, sand and sun. Plan to fly into Boston on the 29th of June, and out again on the 27th of July. Had a good time visiting Mom and Dad at the Oak 'n Spruce resort last night. Seemed like a pleasant comfortable place. Took a little walk after dinner then played some poker. Just missed Athena who was there earlier.

Looks like the weather might not be too good around here on Sunday, so the Look Park idea might not work out. We can get together in Northampton or Worthington, whatever works best for people.

It's too hot to write here. Today's high broke the old record by more than 10 degrees. Okay, it was only 95, but we're not used to it. Even though I spent the last few days in the hot California desert. Ana and I have finalized our plans. We'll be arriving in NC (actually Greenville) early on July 13. We'll head to Boston (via Newark) on July 22nd, and head back to Seattle on July 28th. We'll be travelling standby, so our travel plans could slightly change, either by design or otherwise. Ana finishes school on Wednesday next. Looking forward to having RLS here in a few weeks, and looking forward to NC/Boston even more. Keep those postings coming...§

Yes, she looked wonderful. It was of course, for me, an emotional event, so full of ties to so many things that have come before, in her schoolgirl years. One of the highlights of the ceremony was the bald eagle fly by, right after the retiring vice principal's speech about how they would each "soar like eagles"! (OK, that and the mooning one of the seniors gave the crowd!). ((((Miranda))))

I'm here to report that Miranda looked very 'graduate-like' in her purple cap and gown. The weather held up just fine (if you can call 50 degrees fine) and it was a fun ceremony. Off to college for Miranda.

Things are fine in Seattle. The weather is much better today. I'm going to spend the day doing yard work. Wish I had more of my family around here. Mom and Dad should be just about to Massachusetts by now. Let us know when they make it. Still planning on NC on July 12th or so. I'll keep you posted, so to speak. §

I am honored to announce that VANESSA and JEROME STYLOS are playing in an Americam movie. They are working very hard and very well. 12 hours work per day is tiring so, We will let you know more about it when this experience is over.

"THE MOVIE IS CALLED: Hairy Tale - New Movie
Seth's newest project is located in Nice, France. The feature film, "Hairy Tale", is a story about a young boy and his adventures with a chimp and Jack McCall, a man who is caring for the chimp and befriends the boy. Seth is playing the lead role of Michael Dean along with Matthew Modine as Jack McCall and Roma Downey as Megan Dean, Michael's mother. The movie is being filmed and probably set for a 2003 release.

We love you

Tracey: Great to see your posting! I hadn't realized that you have a toddler son.

I plan to be in Hawaii the first part of July. I will email you soon and let you know more about the trip (the where-abouts and the when-abouts). It would be fun to meet and have a mai-tai or something

Yes, I'm grateful for this web site, too. It does help keep the family together.

Hi everyone,

It was great to find this site, you've done such a good job.

I am Kenneth Helmar's daughter and Aprodite (Jenny's) grand-daughter. It's been a long time since I've seen some of you but I remember a lot of you from the pictures.

I live in Hawaii now with my husband Darrel and my son Dillon (20 mos). My brother Kenny also lives here with his son Alijah (2 1/2).

If you're ever in Hawaii, we'd love to hear from you.

Take care,

Tracey

Happy Birthday, Andrea! Since you are just a few states over from Seattle, maybe you'll wander over this way one of these months. We have plenty of room for you and the entire family. August and September are the only reliably nice months over here. Have a great birthday and a great year. §

hmmmm...I find that file, but no teddy bear icon, and it's within a .cab (cabinet) file, so it's not in a form I can just plain old delete it, I need to extract it first. hmmmm.

And happy 22nd birthday to our Jessamyn!

I recently sent a picture of Naki with mayor Guiliani to the webmaster of the stylos network. I receved word today that one of my correspondant's fopund a virus called jdbgmgr.exe which is not detected by McAfee or Norton, is sent automatically to everyone in your address books and takes 14 days to erase all your files. I followed the following instructions to delete the virus. (1) Go to Start, then Find, then Files and Folders (2) under named, type jdbgmgr.exe and then click Find now. (make sure u are looking in drive C) (3) if the virus appears, (the icon next to it will be a small teddy bear) and the name will be jdbgmgr.exe. (4) DO NOT OPEN IT. Just Right click on it and DELETE it. It will go to the Recycle bin. (5) after u see it disappear, go to the RECYCLE BIN and DELETE it from there as well. If at all possible, EMPTY the RECYCLE BIN uncder FILE. The virus automatically goes to your address book and sends the virus to everyone on it, so u will want to notify them if u find the virus in your system. Lee

Another Birthday, Jess! The years seem to get shorter and shorter, don't they? For you, I hope they get better and better as well. And I hope that you enjoy that free falling feeling of having absolutely no formal obligations (no work, no school, no rent, etc.). That's all bound to change quicker than seems possible. We wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide to do next. And we hope that this is a great year for you...Love from all of us...§

Mona - I am with you! I don't necessarily *dream* about Elkins Park or Westboro or West Roxbury or
Montvale Road, but I find myself thinking about those places alot. Maybe it has to do with getting older and reminiscing, or maybe it's because you and I are the ones that "left home". I'm glad I'm not the only crazy one :)

Wow...Jess is a college grad. Congratulations, Jessamyn. Don't worry, you still have a little while before you need to decide what you want to be when you grow up. In fact, I'm still trying to figure that one out.

Ana and I just got back from Portland. We were down there for the weekend celebrating our friend Anna's 50th birthday. The weather here is not too bad......for mid-March anyway.

Go Red Sox! Go Celtics! Go anywhere, just go.....§

Sue, one of the reasons I was thinking of you is that I remembered that I forgot to inquire after Dick's health when I saw you in September. He looked great, so I guess I had pretty much forgotten that he'd been ill. Hoping all's still well on that front.

You know, when I first moved away from Massachusetts, I used to dream about Montvale Road all the time. Now I dream I'm at some bigger family gathering - in Elkins Park or Westboro, or Gardner Street, like my dream this past week. I miss you all so much.

This weekend at the Pingree household: Betsy is marching in 2 competition parades, one in Bremerton, and one at Viking Fest in our neighboring town of Poulsbo. Paul has a baseball game this afternoon. Miranda is working at her shop (Rave) both days. And tonight is my Jam night with The Overheads, the band I play in. It's always the highlight of my month. 1 or two hours of setting up the equipment, followed my 5 or six hours of sheer play time!

David's out mowing the lawn, which kind of sounds like a drag, but it beats sitting in a rocking chair waiting to feel better!

Love to you all!

It's great to get all these public (and private) affirmations. I also got red roses from someone who takes (and deserves) some credit for these 50 years of motherhood. To all you mothers of young children and middle-sized children and (especially) teen-aged children, being a mother gets easier and easier as you (and they) get older, so hang in there. I love having grown-up children (and grand-children, and now with Cameron, a new generation). Thanks for all the love.

Actually, it was only slightly cozy, and an amazing adventure...especially Yugoslavia - the border crossing, and then the near miss in the tunnel (thanks, Doug, for your cool head and quick thinking - kind of like when you got us over the border - w/ Anita singled out and already on the other side, and one headlight down). Favorite memories from that trip include the smell in the air, driving through the olive groves. And the Gyros for 1 Drachma. And the roasted corn and the lemonade. And the statue of Athena. And Delphi, and Corinthos. And the temple of Poseidon, w/ Phillip eating squid, and finding the ink sack still attached!

Thanks for prompint my memory, Mark.

I'm home w/ Paul today, who's been sick for a couple of days. I sure do wish I could be home more -- the place actually starts to get cleaner, the longer I'm here!

Just last night I, too, was remembering trips to Greece long gone by. Driving down in the VW mini-bus – Dad, Mom, Steve, Mona, Athena, Anita, Doug, Philip and myself – eating souvlaki by the Agora, climbing around the Parthenon, and much more. We may not have had the help of the local relatives, but we still did pretty good: Chalk up another one to that now infamous tour guide Paniotis.
On the home front, I have now moved from my Winter Palace to my new summer digs, about 500 yards away, on the other side of the park, and closer to the beach – about 50 yards. A bit smaller, but we have a terrace and access to the rest of the yard, not to mention friends for neighbors: it promises to be an interesting summer!
We still are not 100% sure of the summer plans, but we are leaning towards a 4 week trip stateside in July. If anyone knows of any reason that August may be better, let me know.

Enjoyed the photos from Greece. Reminded us of our trip to Delphi- what a magical place- and Filippaioi. Wondered how Uncle Christos is doing? I heard that Amalia died in the winter of 1993. We had visited them in the village for a few days during Fall of 1992 with our kids. She was really taken with our son Leo and called him her Bebe. What great memories.

We are experiencing very usual weather. Drought`conditions- no rain in over sixty days- Southeast Alaska is a rain forest. It's been cold, dry and windy. Here it is May and the trees still haven't budded out yet. Very strange.

Hope all is well with you folks. Paul Helmar

The new version will be fully backwards compatible with the old version 20, brings improved performance and reliability, and addresses all issues raised with version 20.

Melissa Many more happy birthdays from me too! How wonderful to have a spring birthday!

Alex, I believe has 41 spankings coming to him.

The weather is fantastic here today - I stayed out till 1AM last night (this morning) playing with my band and feel totally revitalized after another hellish week at work. Paul had a great hit in his baseball game yesterday, and was beaming about it the rest of the day. Betsy's taken up track and is getting buff. Miranda is looking forward to graduation on June 8. Hi everyone,

I’m having a great birthday over here in Worthington. It's a cold, rainy, dreary day, but the loving messages from you all keep me warm. (And my sweater helps too.)

Jeff came to Worthington yesterday and brought some good DVDs. We’ve been fixing Joey’s computer. (We got it working, but had to reformat the hard drive. Sorry about all those mp3s Joe!)

Pam made me some wonderful blueberry muffins for breakfast, and we're going to have marble cake tonight.

Thanks all of the birthday songs. It's nice to be celebrated around the world :-)

Love you all,

How are you celebrating? Alex, I won't make any guesses as to your age, but hope you celebrate in style. Being Styloses (or is that Styli?), I am sure you both will. Happy Day!

Yes, Buddy is taking very good care of us. Not surprisingly, all the relatives and friends treated him, and us, with great warmth. It was fun listening to him talking and laughing with the relatives for hours. He even got loud and vociferous like a true greek; but defending America and Bush, of all things. Can you imagine. He must have been in an arguing mood, seeing how he usually takes the other side of that one.

I would love to think that I could really learn greek and spend some time here at some point, but I don't like the feeling of really standing out. A school child came up to me yesterday and said out of the blue "hallo, what ees your name". Told him it was Ahileas.

Now we are into the tourist part of the trip; ruins and islands.

Love to all. Joe and I will be back in MA Wednesday.

Athena must be home by now. I drove her to the Asheville airport this morning.

Glad to hear something from Greece. I'm glad some of the Stylos clan were able to be at the family function. Paul, we have baby birds in the planter by the front door, as well as a very nervous mother bird. Ah, spring!

Just a note to let you know that by dumbluck I located hotel pan in delphi which is where we are staying. Also there was a 6 month ceremony for apostolos and we were the only stylos relatives. I am very glad to have been there. You can see scott's pictures later

It is wonderful to read so much news here, even if I am not making any myself. It seems like the boys in Greece and the boys in France all had (and are having) a great time. The girls in NC had great luck dodging that apple tree. We are an amazing family. And Athena, check your email for a message from me.

Wednesday, April 24, 2002 at 13:44:06 (PDT)
First to Paul, in case he finds another cyber-cafe: Athena cut the grass with the riding mower and thought it was great fun. I'll take a picture of the white azaleas, which are really outdoing themselves.

Good job, Jessamyn, and good luck with that final sprint. I can hear a sigh of relief coming down from Vermont, and another from the direction of Massachusetts.

Athena and I are off to the town library, where one of us will read poems at the "open mike" to celebrate Poetry Month. AKS flies out tomorrow morning; my loss will be Northampton's gain. We'ver had a great time together.

Keep those messages coming, everybody. They're all appreciated. And to Paul, Scott and Joey: squeeze the most out of the opportunity to walk the hills of the "old country" and to eat the kind of food that "Ma used to make."

isn't it fun when people stumble through with random information ... almost enough to restore your faith in conspiracy theories ... just a quick not to say that mom and i made it safely home from kentucky, mammouth cave and the cabin. Water turned on fine, apple tree blew down in the night (luckily we were not parked under it due to karmic carelessness of neighbors who had blocked the driveway, thinking we would never come after midnight on a sunday night) i left the chainsawing of it for you, dad! we did a few chores and ate smores last night (mom only had a bite, and there was no joe to compete with eating them) everything good here, had a fun and successful time at the ky book fair. Hope everyone is sunny and warm!

couldn't send the picture but it's chevy with windows, two-toned dark brown and chocolate on the sides and chocolate on hood and top with a cable attachment on top. the license plate is URC658 but the u isn't confirmed. it has a black bug guard in front. probably early 90"s.

Hello all,
against all odds I am officially graduating! For all in the area (that means you Scott) I am having a concert at the college playing some folk tunes at six o'clock next Tuesday small and informal but c'mon up if you can.- and Scott you should bring and instrument or two and play up there with me. All the tunes are pretty easy so it shouldn't take long to work it out and I'd love it. Yaya- I'll play extra loud so if you listen close maybe you'll catch it. Or maybe after I graduate I'll come down and live with you as your personal minstrel (am I kidding?) much love to all

Back at the internet cafe again. Dad wanted to check the sports scores again. Only 2 euros per hour. Good deal. Beautiful weather here, looking out over the Aegean sea. Where did I put that sun screen?

Sure wish I spoke greek. Dad talks and talks with the cousins and throws us a tidbid in english once every 15 minutes.

I have to post this quick before Dad and Giota beat me on the other side side of the desk. I'm sure we'll be back online soon.

Just think, Scott, we can wade in a common sea! Steven brought us back the sunshine and warm weather, so it should be even better in the old country. Grevena is cool, but I also liked Githion alot. You will be amazed at how short a week is.

We made it home, but about four hours later than expected. Our plane had mechanical difficulties (prior to takeoff) so we had to change planes in Amsterdam before we even got off the ground. All in all it was a great trip. We're pretty tired, so that's it for now.

Greece sounds great, Scott. Keep those updates coming. §

Wow. Greece. Just like I always pictured it. Beautiful countryside, crowded cities with lots of people and lots of motor scooters. Joey is in his element. At the moment he is off somewhere with Giota visiting people, none of whom speak english. He's such a good sport; he fits right in.

Athena was right, the hospitality is tremendous. Haven't met anyone who speaks english, butI keep saying calli mera, ne, and efharisto, and they keep putting food in fromt of me.

So far we have worked our way up from Athens to Thessaloniki; I think Dad plans to head to Grevena next, then on ttowards the islands before returning to Athens.

I guess Paula is now the only sib who hasn't been to Greece. Hope you get a chance to make it here sometime!

Andio, for now.

Awwww, it's so nice to be wanted. I'm lucky if I can find 2 free days back to back anymore, let alone the $$ for vacation. Not in this stage of my life.

Paul played a concert with his Honor Band this weekend, as well as starting up the Little League season. Betsy has joined track and is stretching and running and getting tanned every day. Miranda is gearing up from Senior Prom. Oh yeah, and graduation, I guess. David has settled into his new job (his company folded the end of February, and he's been transitioning into the same job at a different company). And he's recovering quite well from his knee surgery.

I'm just trying to keep up with it all - got the taxed done in time and may soon have the chance to catch my breath.

Safe travels to all on the road.

Steven and Ana should just be boarding the first leg of their flight back to Seattle. As usual, great to have them over, and glad that the tradition was not broken. Do tell, Scott, how is the first visit to Europe in 28 years? Have an Ouzo for me! I guess it must be Mona that has now gone the longest without going to Europe - any plans?

Our stay in Antibes is quickly coming to a close. It was a very nice trip, but this one seemed way too short. We have had some very nice weather, although we saw rain a few times. Today was warm enough that the kids spent about an hour in the Sea. Steve managed to go in up to about his ankles. It's always sad to leave, but nice to know that we will be coming back before too long. We hope that spring has sprung for everyone in Stylosville....§

Scott i rented a car for nine days starting sat. the cost is 360 euros but we can return it earlier. the cost is about 250 for 7 days. the hotel is 60 euros for a room with shower which has a double bed aand a single bed. We can stay at a cheaper place for 42 euros and that is at the Phadra. but shaared bath and toilet with all rooms on same floor. If none of this sounds good to you we can adjust when you get here. We had a very nice day with Vanessa and Jerome. We went to the beach and went swimming in the swimming pool. Jerome and Vanessa had the day off of school. On Friday, Ana is going to go to school with them. Mark has Friday off, so Steve and Mark will try not to get too bored while the kids are off at school. Things are very nice here and we are glad we came. Hope everything is well with everyone wherever you are. Andrea's post about Mexico reminded me of bringing Ana to Mazatlan when she was six months old. I have never been to a place where they appreciate children more, don't you think, Andy and Vinnie? We'll be here to mid-morning Monday. Tomorrow we will do our gift shopping in Antibes. Tootles...§

Another travel update: We just returned from Puerto Villarta Mexico. Although it wasn't the most relaxing vacation (chasing a 14 month old) it was absolutely beautiful. The food was amazing...cooked by the staff at the villa, the weather was perfect and Sophie loved the ocean. She would run full speed into the water as soon as we let her down! Our next trip will be to Fairhaven the second week of July, so I look forward to seeing many of you then.

Steve: Thanks for keeping us informed on your progress. It means a lot! While I don't envy you the jet-lag, I would like to be there in Nice, awaiting your arrival. Maybe you can lie on the sands of the Mediterranean and recuperate from the long flight. Enjoy your week!

We are happily anticipating Athena's midnight arrival. To observe "Marathon Day" I have a jig-saw puzzle with a picture of the start of the marathon on it, on the dining room table.

A pretty mellow Easter weekend in Bellevue. Tim and I have just been sitting around, downloading music and shampooing the carpets. It feels like winter has finally left us here, and not a moment too soon. I was just remembering the days when we used to put on new clothes and stroll down the Commonwealth Avenue in Boston enjoying the Cherry Blossoms.....Do they still do that? I hope that everyone had a Happy Easter. Tim and I have been looking everywhere for our Easter baskets. Did they get delivered somewhere else by mistake? §

What, was I supposed to set my set my clocks forward? Or is that just in France? Anyways, it's nice to hear from you Markimoo. My Easter celebration consisted of eating a half bag of jelly beans.

Happy Easter from here, too. Missing our usual bright sunshine, I'm trying to remember that we really do need the rain, and I have created our own cheerful atmosphere with a fire in the fireplace, though the temperature doesn't call for it. I am coloring 3 boiled eggs for our tiny Easter basket, and we will have lamb (chops) for dinner. So that's our Easter.

Tomorrow I will celebrate another important holiday: April Fool's Day. Anybody who doesn't read this page had better watch out. So many great possibilities!

Happy Easter to you all. Mark - so glad that summer came and brought you out of hybernation. Hey, does that make you a bear? My stars must have been aligned yesterday. I woke up, and my 15 year old calculater, which had been through the wash, started working again after having been dead for months. Then I went to my car and the CD which had been stuck in my CD player for months spontaneously ejected itself. Then I stopped by the body shop which had worked on my car a few months ago, and they reglued my fuel door back on, which the dealer told me needed to be replaced. I should have gone to the race track. But instead, I went to see Mona play music at Big Daddy's. She was great, they were great. She hasn't left that clear steady voice. Did you know that she is now a bassist? A good time was had by all and it made me very proud to see her up there. Tim and I are headed to Portland today to see an exhibition baseball game. Our version of spring training. We'll be back tonight for a weekend full of spring cleaning related activities....Hope all is and all are well...§

I made it home by 11:30 pm. I am safe and weary but I am in better shape than the vanagon. I am not sure what went wrong but I think it is all related to the fact that the"grs" bulb came on. the book says that it comes on after 24000 miles and you should take it to a dealer to perform maintenance.Since it happened in Mass. I thought I would wait till I got back. Hope I did not cause any damage. will let you know later.

Greetings to All!
It was nice to read the Stylos Message Board and view all the news! A quick review shows a lot of discussion from the weather this spring to birthdays, and plenty of loving information.
Currently it is raining, I wish it was cold enough for snow.
Presently, I am teaching earthquakes in school. What came to my mind was the discussion last spring of the earthquake that was discussed on the Stylos page. I kick myself for not saving it . That was a great description that I could use in class.
Have a great Easter!

A sunny Sunday morning, and we just had a wonderful breakfast, cooked for us by Dad. Still some snow on the ground, but I hope that will soon be gone. Lots of work is being done on the house, and it is coming along nicely. I am slowly working my way through years of stuff, a much bigger job than I had anticipated. Snow, Snow, Snow... Welcome to Spring. I should have known when March came in like such a lamb around here. We had a very nice visit with Jeff. Unfortunately, he didn't get to see any of Seattle's nice views because of the weather. Tim and friends came over for dinner. We had.....spaghetti. Ala son of dad. Ana and I are trying to find somewhere to go in lieu of France for spring break. Any ideas? Glad everyone is fine. And glad that the shuttle isn't coming for me at 3:45 a.m. like it is for Jeff....§

Snow here today, too, and lots of it. For a change, oh miracle of miracles....I made it home in time for the concert tonight!! Unfortunately, it was cancelled due to inclement weather. Can you believe it? So we went out for a celebratory ice cream anyway. That's the spirit, eh? Downside - I missed my chance to see Jeff before he heads out.

So, tell us about the concert(s), Mona. I wanted to report a great spaghetti dinner (thanks, Dad), and a good visit with Jessamyn last night. How many 48 year olds have spent the night in a dorm room with their child? (thanks, Jess, for a good time!). And Melinda is still in CA, and I cannot wait to hear her stories. Snow. That is all I want to say on that subject. Happy first day of spring.

Paul's first concert tomorrow - we're all psyched! He's taken to the trumpet like a fish to water. Also, he got his neck gear today - braces next week! Betsy had a concert tonight, but the traffic bedeviled me and I didn't make it home in time. Bummer.

Miranda has heard from 2 of the 3 schools she's applied to with acceptances. I've been looking over the UWashington website and contemplating finishing my own degree there...stranger things have happened, I guess.

But not much stranger.

Hope you're all well and happy.

Had the pleasure of a visit from Dad here at work this morning. He was headed for Paula's when he left.

Got 4 or 5 inches of snow in Worthington last night. Hopefully it will be gone tomorrow, the start of spring!

At last report (9 this evening) Paul was as far as Harrisburg, PA on his trip to MA, and all was well. He's driving the "love bug" so when he gets sleepy he'll find a place to stop and take a rest. He may make a stop in CT, or maybe he won't.

Yes, thanks, Rona for keeping us informed. I wish the news was better. When we don't hear anything we always hope that maybe no new is good news. If the family thinks there is some progress, I prefer to believe there is, in spite of what the doctors may say. Know that you are not forgotten.

Buddy is getting ready for another trip north. So, any of you up there: don't be surprised if he appears at your door. (He's not good at saying, or knowing, what his exact plans are.)

Let me just say, I am so glad it is finally the weekend. Melinda is in California for spring break, Jessamyn working way too hard on her "Plan" as she is set to graduate in two months, and Mark and I continue the "fix up this old house" routine. We are fixing all those things that we never got around to, so you will have to see how nice things are looking! We will be in NJ for the weekend visiting Mark's mother. Also, for those who may not know, Dad is coming next week! Hurray. Okay, that is my news. What is yours?

And greetings and good wishes from your grandmother. Let us know how you are spending your birthday and whether being nine feels any different from being eight. We, too, are looking forward to your visit this summer.

Steve, in answer to your question, we plan to be in MA June 9-23. Then there is a conference in Williamsburg, KY July 12-14 that I would like attend but I can do that even if it comes in the middle of your visit here. I think if Mona and family come east it will be later in the summer. That's all I see on our calendar.

I hope you have a happy birthday today, and a delicious birthday cake. Watch the mail for something from me - better late than never. I can't wait to see you this summer. Love from your auntie,

On a beautiful windy spring day here, I am getting ready to go to Athena's birthday party. I am hoping for pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey and chocolate cake. If not that, I will settle for laughter and good food. If not that, I am turning around and coming home. Then I will have to wait for Athena's BIG 40.

We're just getting home after a rather crazy day - 6 inches of snow last night, and an early morning drive into the Big City for David's knee surgery this morning. All's well now, however. Just a bit of time for some recuperation and we should be ready to rock and roll again.

well as mark is so fond of saying, i'm just a normal person again. I had a spectacular birthday full of happiness even though on the surface all i did was work on the cabinets and eat dinner at home. Yes they are almost done (installation tonight, dad). Oh i did have a fun adventure on my birthday with cj, walking around smith in the freezing cold. Another highlight was scott and jeff showing up with a hand-decorated printout of the web-page (scott knew i wouldn't get around to reading it that day) which was very fun. Thanks for the cyber-love, cyber family! Hope to see the real you soon!

Yup. At the moment it looks like we will be selling and moving in towards the city. Perhaps Cambridge, Somerville, or Arlington. Yes it means a much longer commute for me, and probably a smaller house (or condo), but Mark really wants to go Urban. Life is all about compromise, right?

Wow, Jeffrey!!! Looks like you have already been accepted from your second choice, so now it is down to two. I'm impressed. You've done my name proud. I think maybe I'll have to change my name to Jeffrey Steve Stylos now. I hope you are as proud of yourself as we all are of you. Now, if it were me, I'd take the free trips and go visit them all before making any choices. Whoever gets you will be one lucky school.

Meanwhile, Ana and I are back from Chicago. What a nice trip. Even the weather cooperated. More later...§

Hi all!

In case people are interested in which Computer Science graduate programs have replied to my applications so far:

CMU, UMass, Rice, Cornell and UWashington have accepted me (and will all fly me out to visit, except for UMass, which doesn't need to).

CalTech said "maybe," and wants to interview me before deciding, but will fly me out to California to visit.

Schools I haven't back from: MIT, NEU, Brown, UT Austin.

Paul went off to Little League try-outs (or more correctly, "Skills Assessment"), but I just got a call to tell me they were postponed due to rain. Unfortunately, they've been rescheduled for next Saturday, when he should be in the mountains snowboarding.

I'm enjoying a moment of peace as the house is empty right now - that won't last long. I'm kind of watching the Olympics, and cleaning house. I hear from Michael Cassilly that he's got a website with International School Hamburg contact info - hope you don't mind Athena, I gave him your email address to include. There definitely was a treehouse to the right of the Sheehan's house, looking at it from our house. It was pretty far back from the road, probably at least as far back as the house. I don't remember the mossy leafy spot.

It's tough to be the one to write a message after Athena. She doesn't write often, but when she does it's a tough act to follow. That place between the Schwartzes and the Ingbars is also one of my most magical memories. Along with the top of the big maple tree right in front of it.

I can't beleive it, a Super Bowl victory for the Patriots! They'll always be the Boston Patriots to me. I just wish I was in Boston to share in the celebration. My best wishes to all those die-hard fans who have perservered for all of these years. I watched the game at home with Tim, who was a Bostonian for most of the season. Other than that, it was a calm and productive weekend. Good thing, too, I'll be travelling for most of the next week and the next two weekends. Still shakin' boss. Had a little taste of spring this afternoon. Still wondering who the prince and princess were. Looking forward to having Pam and Cameron out here in Worthington as of this weekend.

Good to see your name here, Mark. Yeah, I am green with envy. Have I said lately how much I hate winter? Just finished a wonderful supper-Melinda's homemade ravioli. Quite a cook, that one. How about the rest of you? Scott?

A belated reply to Ricky - if he is still looking in - I hope you made those kids walk barefoot to Mason-Rice, and it was in the winter, so they can know how tough we really had it. I'll bite: tell us who the princes and princesses were. Lucky Seattle - getting out of winter. Why, just today I had three layers of clothes here: shirt, sweater, AND jacket. I hope it was due to the early morning (8:00 O'clock). Lunch-time was OK - I could still go out in shirtsleeves. And we haven't been able to go in the sea for almost 3 months...
That's all. Go Pats!

I've been in Oregon for the weekend. I left there in the middle of a snowstorm. Well, the ground was already white, that's a snowstorm for out here. We still haven't seen any here, but from the looks of the football game on Saturday, Boston has. All the more reason for you young adults to look to Seattle for the next stop in your education. It seems like we have settled into the winter doldrums here. At least the days are getting longer. §

Congratulations to Jeff and Miranda for getting their college applications in. And on time. Jeff is looking toward graduate school; Steve hopes it will be in Seattle, Washington. If so, he may well be on the same campus where Miranda expects be a freshman. Good luck to both in finishing up the current phase of their academics, and moving into the next. Good luck to Jessamyn, too, who is now on the home stretch toward a Bachelor's degree at Marlboro, Vermont.

A Melissa sighting! How wonderful!

We, of course, have no snow here. Unless you head up to the mountains. Which Paul has been doing on Saturdays - for Christmas he got snowboarding lessons. He's loving it. Last week he said he earned the title of King of the Faceplant! I think he relinquished that title this week, though.

I sang and played for 5 hours yesterday - with a sore throat. Now I'm paying for it - can't swallow without intense pain. Public performance scheduled for the end of March...keep your calendars open!

A walk in the forest. That does sound wonderful. Melinda flew in on a puddle jumper from Montreal today in a snow squall. We are cold and white here, but with a roaring fire in the fireplace.

Yea! Im number 21000.

Mona, a 4 and a half hour commute? Terrible! You've got to find a job on your side of the big waters.

Good to hear from you, Greg. And I'm still wondering what happened to Sue and Jennifer on December 30. We were expecting to see them at Alex's.

All is well with us, here in North Carolina.

To be fair, Steve, it's an exceptionally dark, gray winter day in Seattle. I just got home after a 4+ hour commute. This is the depth of winter, in these parts. Gotta get better from here, right???

Cool, Greg! Think I will go look it up! Thanks for the quick summary. I'd been wondering...Sounds like a Good Life. :)

Imagine that Greg, being out of high school for 20 years and still being able to party until 4:00 a.m. I'm sure his cousin Athena must be proud! We are settling into the old grindstone around here. It's been dark and gray since we came back. After almost 30 years, I must admit that the gray skies are getting to me. Ana and I are planning to go to France in April (12-22) if we can swing it. Mark, will our room be available? Is that the week that the kids have off of school? Anyone else who wants to come with us, speak now! §

Sounds wonderful, Mona. Can't wait to hear! Jessamyn has added a banjo and Ukelele to her collection, so I say we start our own band (what with Melinda and her mandolin, keyboard and japanese flute. me and my psaltry and Mark his bongos). What do you say? I hope this turns out to be a musical year for us all. (And we too are waiting for a storm, Mom, though Melinda may not be waiting as she is spending the week in Montreal.)

Yes, it's true...I am now a lowly bass player. But let me tell you, it is soooo much fun! I was playing with The Overheads (my band) in December, and they asked me to step up and give the bass a try (that position is always hard to fill), and - voila! I did OK. And it was so easy - already being familiar with the layout of the fretboard and the tuning. And it's so much less busy than playing rhythm guitar. And frees you up to dance around a bit. And you can be so LOUD with very little effort. It seemed to really draw on all these things I'd been learning all around. We play mostly Grateful Dead (and Bob Dylan) cover tunes, and will be having a (recorded) gig sometime in the very near future. I'll keep you posted.

So anyways, David bought me a beautiful, used Fender for Christmas, and I'm borrowing a practice amp, and I'm happy as, well, as a very happy person.

Hello Greg: Since you know more of what is new with us, than we do about you, bring us up to date.

Does everybody know that Mona is now playing bass with her musical group? Can't you just see her dancing around with that giant fiddle? It's a pleasure to see more and more musicians emerging in this family.

We're still waiting for the winter storm that was promised us for the weekend. It's a little overdue, but I'm sure the school kids hope it will show up.

Who's next?

Yes, Paula, we woke up to a couple of inches of white stuff and more coming down. It's about time! Good excuse to stay in and catch up on beginning-of-the-year stuff, like putting away all signs of Christmas, and sorting out the bills. I'm glad to have a working fireplace and a stack of firewood. Schools are called off, as is always the case if the snow begins to stick.

Mark and I had a quiet and wonderful time ALONE here. Ate a candle-lit gourmet meal (prepared by Mark when I was off at work) and watched the Last Temptation of Christ. Some powerful movie. Jessamyn was off in Holyoke playing Irish music with friends, and Melinda went to the First Night in Boston. We await Steve's arrival as he prepares for his westward journey today. Happy New Year!
