Happy New Year! I have a feeling that 1999 will bring joy and peace to us all. Here's to new beginnings, resolutions, and those family bonds that keep us going. Love to you all.

And we will be last, as usual. Ana and I are going to spend a quiet New Year's Eve having dinner with friends in Tacoma. If the rain quits, and we can stay awake, we may try to make it back to Seattle by midnight to watch them blow 1500 fireworks from atop the Space Needle at midnight. For those of you that can't be here, you can join in the action by tuning in to www.spaceneedle.com at midnight Pacific Time. Or better still, wait until next year, and come out to see them implode the Kingdome on Millenium Eve. We hope everyone has a happy and safe new year. See you next year....§

Sorry if it seems like I've been incognito....truth is I'm barely keeping my head above water, what with work, the house, the holidays, the weather, and all. We had great fun on Christmas! I'll be taking the rest of the week off to deal with accumulated STUFF of all sorts. And hey! Paula sent me a camera, so the chances of getting pix from the Pingrees has increased greatly -- thanks so much, Paula. More thank yous will be coming in email -- I WILL GET CAUGHT UP!!!

The REAL Christmas came to Acton on Sunday. We had our Turkey dinner at a FULL table, lots of cousins, laughter, music and gift giving. All in all I figured we had 6 cousins, 4 assorted friends and significant others, 3 Stylos siblings, 3 inlaws, and 1 baby in utero. Now we can move on to New Years.

For those of you wondering, we ate manicotti for Christmas. Well, it was red anyway. We are looking forward to turkey tomorrow with Athena and Scott and family. Mona, how did you all enjoy Christmas? And Mark? Still hoping you get here, Steve. And Mom and Dad; I can't believe that you in the sunny south got the white Christmas!

It's a green Christmas here in Worthington, but that's OK with me. We have had a very nice Christmas with all the kids here including Pam and Chris. Sorry we missed your call Steve. Happy holidays to everyone!

I'm having a nice Christmas in Portland. Up until late yesterday afternoon, it looked like we would have a White Christmas. But then the snow turned to rain, and we are instead having a Christmas filled with Pacific Northwest sunshine (the rest of the planet calls this rain). Everything is fine here. I will be driving back to Seattle tonight, and making my Christmas calls from the car. Hope to talk to all of you then. Love you all.....§

Well this continues to be a different kind of Christmas here. No relatives, excepting us. We opened our Christmas Eve present around midnight, and as we all ended up staying up until around 2:00 am, Santa had a hard time doing his job. We got up by 7:00, Jess made us a wonderful breakfast, and opened presents until 11:00. That was fun. Good loot. Then off to get the Turkey ready for the oven only to find it a little (okay a lot) past its prime. Now we are looking for alternatives. Pasta? Peanut butter sandwiches? Any suggestions? I miss you all, and hope you get your Christmas wish this year. Love from me.

It is Christmas Eve and as per tradition, we opened our one present. And now I have a new Pentax camera to take with me to France. So expect to see the results in this space before too long. Warm holiday wishes to all of you. Scattered though we are, I don't feel that far away from any of you. A lot of that is due to telephone and email, and a lot of it is due to feeling loved and loving. There are many good ways to do Christmas and this is one of them. Our Christmas tree-in-a-pot shines brightly, the house is warm and there are carols sporadically: sometimes from the TV or radio, sometimes from the harp and sometimes in our own voice. So here's to you and however you find yourself celebrating Christmas, and to winding down 1998 in any manner that pleases you and to getting ready for 1999, and all the yet-unknown things it will bring. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

Yes, Steve. Odd indeed. This summer for sure.
Paula
Wednesday, December 23, 1998 at 15:37:43 (PST)
I was sitting around reflecting on the fact that this will be the first Christmas that I will not see any members of my family of origin in many years. Then I realized that, in all likelihood, none of the members of my family of origin will see any other member. While that seems to be odd, it seems to be okay. I don't feel any less close to any of you because of it. I'll just save my good cheer for next summer's reunion, at which time, in Athena's words, "we'll party like it was 1999." Best wishes to all for a great holiday season...§

It was so - Scott is good, Scott is great - we thank him, for his coming was great. What pleasing rhyme and feeling we find in that song. I never thought 44 years ago it would come to this. It was a blessing then -- it is a blessing now. Have a happy birthday Scott and may the gods share in your achievements. Love from Panos.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SCOTT. I don't know if I am number six or number four. But as the only older big sister you will ever have, let me say, happy birthday little brother. Hope you have a great (though nippy) day there in the woods of Worthington, and are treated in a way that Great Scott deserves. Scott is great, Scott is good........See you in a 8 days. Love from..

Me second! Isn't this great? We all get to share in everybody else's birthdays. So now we get to shower Scott with attention, affection (everything but gifts: we'll leave that to the people who share his breakfast table.) So have a good birthday, Scotty-boy. I hope you're not "on call" or anything and that you get to do whatever makes you happy. We will raising a glass to you down here. Love, Mom

Aw, Shucks!!! I wish you were all here to see me blush. I had a very warm and peaceful birthday, even the it was the coldest day of the winter (so far) here. I spent lots of relaxing time with Ana and a few close friends, and topped it off with cake and ice cream with Aunt Pat. I can't help but fondly remember that my first memory is the third birthday party Patsy had for me on the day before Scott was born. Forty-four years ago, today. Let's see, that would make you forty-four, Great Scott. Let me be the first to say happy birthday to you. Oops, you got me on that one, wishing happy birthday to yourself last Wednesday. Okay, I'll be a gracious second, second kids are that way. I don't have to tell you how much you all mean to me, but let me tell you anyway. We hope to see you all soon....§

Happy Birthday Steve! That must mean that Christmas is getting close. I am starting my last day at work for this year, that is if things go according to plan. I'll spend the last weekend in Boston, then fly out on Monday to have Christmas with my kids under the palm trees of Antibes.

5000, WOW! Even considering the fact that some of have to go through the Stylos Network to get to the internet, I think that's pretty amazing. Scott, I'm sure our alert and ingenious webmaster will come up with the appropriate prize for being number 5000.

Hey, I'm the 5000th visitor to the site. I should win a gift certificate to the stylos.net online catalog or something. Happy birthday to Ludwig Beethoven (I guess there's a limit to how happy it can be when you've been dead for a few hundred years). And an early happy birthday to MF, SJS and SAS.

The Pingree Manse survived the onslaught of 6 - Spice Girl Lovin' Young Ladies, celebrating Betsy's birthday with a Pajama Party! (but just barely) If anyone says "Tell Me What You Want, What You Really Really Want" -- I'm going to THROTTLE them!! OY! But, with the birthday season behind us, we've welcomed the Christmas/Holiday Season with open arms, and have a naked Norwegian Spruce standing in the livingroom, and boxes of decorations to put out.....mmmm......love that Christmas Tree smell. Happy Hanukah to all celebrants! The festival of lights -- yeah, lights -- THAT's what we need!

A very happy birthday to Christopher Douglas Layne, who turned 50 quietly yesterday. We had been planning to have a small birthday party for him at his mom's yesterday, but our plans have evolved into a brunch there tomorrow. We hope that the next fifty are even better than the last....

Sorry, but it looks like my winter break with Ana won't start until the evening of the 27th. So the earliest that we will get there is the 28th. I will probably work a few days that week, and get there on the 30th and stay until the 3rd of next year. Sometimes you just need to take what you can get. I hope all is well...§

I think the 27th at Paula and Mark's sounds good. It would work out good for us since Pam will be visiting us from the 24th to the 27th and we could combine a visit to Paula's with giving Pam a ride home. Will Steve be around by the 27th?

Things seem to be getting pretty quiet around here. Hopefully everyone is out shopping for my Christmas presents. I know I actually got a bit of shopping done in November, must be a sign of getting older. Ana and I are at Mona's house, having a nice relaxing Sunday, watching Mona lounging around drinking coffee and reading the paper in bed. We still don't know exactly what our Christmas plans are. Leo !! I was extremely happy to see you message. Why just yesterday I was asking mark if he knew your email address. By the way I used to sign my father's name on my report cards, and he wrote it "AHILEAS" and I think I could still write it like he did. In any event I wonder how you are doing and I will try to see you before I go back to N.C. In the meantime take good care of yourself.

Wow, Betsy, I can't believe that you're ten already! It seems like just yesterday that... Oh well, enough of that. How well I remember my tenth birthday. And how permanent reaching double digits seemed. You'll never be able to write your age without lifting your pen again. Ana and I are coming out there on Saturday, but I guess you might be out being ten. We hope we see you. In the meantime, we hope that you have the happiest of birthdays. Love ya.....§

Welcome back to the states to webmaster Mark! It's great being able to keep tabs on everybody on-line. We had a good thanksgiving at Jojo's new house on the cape. Pam is looking great. I just took a look at this site using Internet Explorer Version 3.02, with 256 colors. Not only does it start with a JavaScript error, the graphics did not look good at all, and the background was grey were it should have been white. Basically, a mess. So, if you are using IE3 - update. If you do not have a strong enough machine for IE4, or do not want it to take over too much of your system, Netscape 4 is a good choice.

I know it’s hard to believe, but Christmas is six weeks from today. Ana and I were planning to go to France, but it looks like that will not be able to happen this year. We have talked about going to Massachusetts, however. It looks like Timmy and Jillian won’t be coming back to Seattle for Christmas, and we’d like to see them. If that happens, we would probably arrive in Boston the day after Christmas, and stay approximately one week. Anyone else going to be around there? Keep us posted…§

hey everybody! well i guess i haven't read the web page for a while and missed a slew of birthdays. So happy november to us all and it was good to get caught up (a little) on the family scene. Well we did win a medal (bronze) in our mixed eight in knoxville. Our women's four hasn't won any yet but we get better every race. Last race of the season is tomorrow in augusta georgia. Still trying to get some work done in between practices. Looking forward to a brief trip home for thanksgiving and a longer one at christmas. Hope everyone is happy and busy. Or just happy. Paula i hope your ankle is better soon. Love to all from athena.

Yeah, proper case, as in sentences starting with a capital, then lower case, and ending with a period. For those of you at Microsoft, it is called sentence case, as in format case. And no illegal @stylos.net email addresses, 'cause they all go to me. So there!

Sounds good to me, too, Louie. I guess you must be getting quite a large place. Lemme think, the summer of '99... That is less than 9 months away... Something you are not telling us? And no shouting on the Internet (that means that proper case messages look much nicer than uppercase), or the omnipresent WebMaster might get you! In any event, welcome, and come back again, soon. And get that lazy sister of your over to send a message of her own. Greetings to the whole family.

An extended reunion in the summer of '99 sounds great, Lou. Count me in, just give me plenty of advance notice. And congrats on the upcoming addition and the new home. Keep us posted. And to the rest of you...keep up the good work, we filled this guestbook up twice as fast as the first one. Or is WebMarkster growing more impatient as he grows gracefully older? Or is his computer just growing slower? Things are all fine on the west coast, although it seems that winter has arrived with a determination to stay. §

Hi cousins. Lou and Lisa again. We are having a very active fall. Moving to our new home on 11/20. We'll be returning to the American birthplace of our roots - Lowell, MA. Nice new home close by to mom and dad. We should be able to host the next extended reunion (summer 99?) Hopefully we'll also have a new addition to the family tree. By for now. Lou and Lisa

Well, I had a GREAT time yesterday...also filled with hugs and kisses, and a long overdue visit with Aunt Pat. But now that I think about it, I never did find the time to try out the bouncy thing myself -- looked like a ton of fun from the outside, though. I asked Miranda about that, Steve, and she said "yeah, I was just thinking about that today", but I'll let her come on here and tell you about it. Right now she (and 3 girlfriends) are still snoozing...had a pretty busy day herself!

Happy 14th Birthday Miranda. I looked at Ana this morning, and I thought, "Ana is exactly the same age as Miranda was, when she (Ana) was born." Do you remember me calling you from the hospital that morning? You were the first one that I called. And here is a scary thought: When Ana is the age that you are at this moment, it will be your twenty-first birthday. Thanks for being in our family, Miranda, and I hope that this, your fifteenth year, is a great one...§

Thanks for the birthday messages. We had a great party at Ken and Patsy's. We had a big, blow up castle that we all bounced on. Next year I want all the same people to come to my party. I got lots of presents, including a BIG snuggly doll (bigger than me) from Tim and Jillian. It's full of hugs and kisses from them, and I hug it all the time. Being seven feels the same as being six. Thanks again.... ANA

Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear ANA, happy birthday to you. You will have to provide your own music, since words are all I can send over the internet. I think about now you are having a birthday party at Aunt Pat's. I'm sure it will be a big success. I think seven is a wonderful age, and I expect this to be a good year for you. We send you love. Happy Birthday to Miranda and Ana from the East Coast. I hope this feels like a westward spreading wave of Birthday wishes to two well- desrving nieces. Hope you each are carrying on the family tradition of celebrating by eating and doing just what you want on this great day. And then, start a new tradition of telling the rest of us just what that was! Love to you both, and happy birthday.

7/11, 7/11. That one is at least easy to remember. Happy Birthday to Ana. Vanessa and Jerome hope that they will be seeing (one of) their favorite cousin soon. What are you doing to celebrate? And Happy Birthday to Miranda. This must make you old enough to do some of those things you want. Like go out alone, or even work! (heh heh) How nice that it comes on a weekend this year. Do tell how you spend this special day. And it is good to see Mark A. back in the chatter. The one who goes back and corrects his mistakes, saving the spelling checker some work.

Now this may never end, and I hope I am not hogging the cybewaves or appearing a bit self-centered. But if they were bear trees their fur would probably keep them warm or they would be hibernating or something. So say bare trees and we will all be happy. Good night. Mark

I mean stay long. But while I am back way not just chatter on. The leaves lay lightly on the ground, leaving bear trees already shivering with the anticipation of winter (OK really the wind but ). Tomorrow, Saturday and remember I already worked Friday and I'm supposed to only work 4 days, I spend 3 hours speaking with 200 family members of severely and persistently mentally ill (SPMI to their friends) people--ain't life strange. Besides echoing the various birthday congratulations and all I do want to give my special congratulations and best wishes to Sophie on her new job. That's great and I bet will feel good. Mark

Thanks for all the best wishes on my day. Nothing like a hotel room to make a person appreciate home. The conference was great, and inspiring in some obsure way that would only make sense to someone in my convoluted line of work. St. Louis itself I saw next to nothing of except the arch which is very tall and impressive and you can go up in it and look out tiny windows on the top out over the city honest--I didn't but someone I talked to did. Still, the shape compellingly despite its silver color reminds one of a far more widespread icon of an identical shape and more commercial meaning. By the way, Mark yes Brother Mark, what does it mean that i just typed about 150 characters on one line? Am I using your creation incorrectly? So now that I am using enter what does that do? Otherwise I am old and still cranky, but very much appreciate the good company of all of you. Remember to visit us often and still long. Mark

Woooo Hooo! for Sophie -- that's fantastic! Paul and I were both ill for Halloween....grrrrr. But he had fun (I think) giving out candy to the Trick and Treaters. We *did* run out of candy though...packs of Jr Highschoolers did us in! Thanksgiving....hmmm...can't think of any plans.

Sunday, November 01, 1998 at 08:33:21 (PST)
Well, we survived another halloween. We did have our house egged and had one pumpkin smashed though. Not too much candy left over either (strawberry twizzlers). Joey had 4 friends over, early birthday party) only one of whom had to go home sick. In other news, I will be spending a year working in Worcester after I finish in Pittsfield (July 1999). I'll be doing a fellowship in surgical pathology. I'll come home to Worthington on weekends and whenever I can during the week. This thanksgiving we are going to Linda's Mom's (JoJo) new house in Brewster on the cape. What are you doing?

Sunday, November 01, 1998 at 07:54:57 (PST)
Congratulations and bon chance, Sophie, from here, too. I'm sure you'll do well. We had more "trick or treaters" than last year. At one point it almost looked like we might not have any candy left over, and that wouldn't have been good since we bought our favorite kinds. We are currently expecting Athena to arrive, on her way back from the crew team's first race in Knoxville. Happy Hallowe'en to all.

Me too! I wanted to wish you Happy Birthday in French, then became unsure of the spelling, so I went to http://babelfish.altavista.com/, and came up with joyeux anniversaire!!! Dear Ramona, dear Paul, dear friends ... I hope you are all fine, and judging by the lively discussion on the net this seems to be the case. It is Friday evening here in London, and I have been back in this loud city for two weeks now. People still tell me that I look relaxed, but I fear that will change soon. There are just too many people here, bumping into each other on the "Tube" and running against each other everywhere. My vacations have been a lot of fun (and work and relaxation). After the stay in France for which my university paid for (there are still miracles in this world !!!) because I was going to write a paper about the French extreme right (and also did), I stayed in Hamburg with my (German) family for some days before going to Bonn where I interned with a Member of Parliament during the 6 weeks before the elections. Old man Kohl is gone and Germany has a new government ... which does not mean more than some better and some worse policies (and the end of the era Kohl. My sister is still living in Memphis, TN, and I am not sure when (and if !!!) she will be coming back to the old continent. However, knowing that she has Coke for breakfast frequently (ahhhh, Coca-Cola, I mean, of course), it seems very possible that she will stay there (really, only hard-core Americans have Coke for breakfast !!!). Alright, I think I shall join some friends in a strange place these people here call "pub" and have a "pint" thinking of you. Take care !!! Kai

I trust Mona got her packing done and arrived with more or less all her stuff. Melinda, my AIM buddy, informed me that Paula made it safe and sound. So, what is up to celebrate the big day?

Enjoyed Paula's edition of "Ramona's birthday" incl photos of Styloses at cabin summer 98. We're still having a wonderful time on Oahu, returning to Gig Harbor, WA 16Sep98. Patsy did a 1-wk workshop for teachers on Saipan in Sep. Cheers all.

Just because you are paranoid, does not mean that they are not all out to get you! Just kidding, Mona. I was wondering why you always got the last word? I am still waiting for a reply to my last mail! And aren't you supposed to be in N.C.? And thanks for giving me a chance to use that line, I have been looking for one since I found it.
You talking to me? (mls@stylos.net)

What I want to know is...why does the conversation always die just after I post something? Or am I being too paranoid?

I like the meet in Kingston suggestion!! You guys would just love it here! And the beginning of June makes it really really hard - with the kids still in school and all.... What I'm thinking of is flying back and renting a car and hanging around the east coast for a couple of weeks. Assuming I'm still working at that point -- it's always touch and go. Hey Steve - 10 years ago -- that was fun, I must say.

Well, I just checked the calendar, and the 6th of June is a sunday next summer. That should end the discussions about the when part. None of this, "but we're celebrating on the ...". As to the where, I would love to plan an extravaganza in France, Greece, Disneyland or the coast of North Carolina. But the only thing that really makes sense, in somewhere in Massachusetts, since there is so much extended family there. Therefore, my choices would be Paula's or Bill's, or a rented hall somewhere in the Boston area. The timing will be a little difficult, since the kids will still be in school, but we will have to work it out. Any other thoughts? §

I'm looking forward to a get together next summer. I'll be taking my boards in June or July. In previous years they told you the exact dates in advance, but this year they are going to a computerized test and testing dates will run for a period of 6 weeks or so (it is a 3 day test given on Mon-Wed). I won't know my testing dates for sure until about March, but if I know when we are planning to get together, I'm sure I can keep that time open. Probably May or early to mid-June would be best for me. I vote for Paula's house or somewhere else in the great Northeast.

Happy trails to the Ladies for their Southern Reunion. As for next summer, I sure do not want to be odd man out. Still no news from these parts. Spending my first weekend in the new digs with the kids. At least promises to be active, if not exciting. Might even work in Jerome's first Two Wheeler lesson. Can you think of something more fun than that?

Yes, Stevie, I agree. Ma and Pa's 50th makes a very good (and convenient) reason to convene. I am open to any time and place. I am planning on working on specifics in NC next week. Mona will come join us, right Mona? And I vote she bring those other Pingrees with her. Let me also admit that I am VERY excited about my upcoming FIRST EVER solo vacation. My new plan is to spend a luxurious night alone in a motel on the way up. Okay, that may not sound like much to you, but to me it sounds thrilling. I will let you all know when I get there.

Yup! Gets pretty boring around this guestbook lately. Here's a good one for you - Happy Anniversary to me. Ten years ago today, we were all assembled in Marblehead. I know this might be hard for everyone to believe, but that was the last time that I was with all my siblings at once. I move that we find a way to get together soon, before something happens and it is too late. I suggest that we plan a little reunion next summer somewhere. Now I know if we do it in Kingston, Mona will be sure to make it. Maybe we should just take up a collection for her, or just exert as much collective peer pressure as we can. Leave your comments here. I hope that all is well for all, and that I see you all soon. §

You're driving?! Great -- be sure to bring your guitar, and any other sundry musical instruments you can think of. Hey, Athena, would you bring your steel string guitar, and let me use it? I won't be bringing mine on the plane (not just the hassle factor -- the case is kaput). I'm getting pretty revved up about this myself. Anything I can bring you from the Great PNW, Mom?

Mark and I just returned from Family Day at Marlboro, and can report that Jess is safe, sound, and happy. The weather and foliage was as stunning as Jess. Well almost. She has now solved her email dilemma and is ready for communication. I am getting excited about driving to NC next Saturday, 10/10, for a week long celebration of Mom's birthday. Why, if it wasn't for her (and Dad), where would we be?

And I thought I would be the first to say Happy Birthday to Mark....Count me as number 3 (my usual place). I am so glad I had this last year with you. It gave us a chance to get to know each other as adults, or a close to adults as we'll get. I also appreciate all your work on this website, and especially the idea and the motivation that made it happen. I hope your day it wonderful, that you spend it with your great family, and all your wishes come true. Love,

Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday, dear Mark .. ..etc, etc. It seems like only yesterday, when you first burst upon the scene, and Sputnik went into outer space a few days later. I hope this will be a good year for you and I expect that it will. Thanks for setting up the webpage so we can all keep in better touch. (I think we should call this part of it the Bulletin Board instead of the Guestbook). I hope you get to be KING FOR A DAY. Love, Mom

Let me be the first to wish Webmaster Mark a happy birthday. While it's not even dark here, I know it must be the 29th on the far side of the Atlantic. We all appreciate, Mark, your commitment to your family, past and present, that compelled you to set this website up, and to return to France. We are all rooting for you, and Sophie and Jerome and Vanessa. You have a great family and have every reason to be proud of the job you are doing with them. We all assume that when you have some job or family news we will be seeing it here. Best of Luck!! And may this be the best year yet!!!!! Dad left driving for points South at 5:30 am. As usual it was great to have him here. All these good-byes are getting to me, though, so let's try to balance them with hellos. Who is coming to visit next? Oh, maybe it is me going to NC for mom's 70th, to be joined by my sisters. All is well here, and yes, that would be my melinda in the shade(s).

Eeek! You're right, of course. You'll have to excuse me while I bury myself in figuring out how to clear off enough room on my hard drive to install this scanner, some drivers, a photo shop program....I'll be back in a bit.

Something's missing, you say? Yeah, like contributing reporters... How 'bout some help, out there? Write some text, maybe include a picture or two, send it to The Editor, and you, too, can play a part. So there!

As for other news, I am now counting the minutes before my departure from Paula and Mark's house. Heading back to France in a few hours, unless I should be lucky enough to get bumped again. Just make it time before the last day of summer. Should even be some beach days left over there. It has been a long visit, and I was glad to get a chance to see all of my family, even if some of the visits were short. I will miss you all, but I am sure I will be kept busy with my own two whirlwinds. Might even squeeze in time to find a job. In any event, good luck holding down the fort on this side. You know where you can find me.

Pig Pile on Paula's House!! Yesterday I took Miranda, her friend Krystal, and Paul on a grueling 7 mile hike. We went up to Lena Lake in the Olympic Mountains (Washington's Other Mountain Range). And boy are my knees aching!! Man, I have to do that more often -- it was great to watch the kids go from "this is boring" to "look at this cool (rock, fungus, squirrel...etc)". The lake was gorgeous, and the weather was too. Now back to work....bummer!

Great reading, that must be why l keep forgetting to write. Jess came back to visit this week-end; she has been away two weeks! We miss her, but she seems to be doing wonderfully, though over-worked of course. Watching Mark pack up to leave is just another trauma for us. Too many comings and goings. All a part of life I guess. I am glad you Worthington Styloses enjoyed NC as we did. And glad you West Coasters are enjoying each other's company. Hey, lets all think about planning mom and dad's 50th. When and where? Should we wait until the end of June when all the children are out of school? I volunteer our house. Other ideas? All I can say is that it's a good thing that we on the left coast have things to do other than check this page for news from afar. Things would get mighty boring. We had yet another fine barbecue in Kingston today. In fact we just finished it. Betsy is going to come and spend the night with us, then come with us tomorrow to the Puyallup Fair and the Northwest Trek (a wildlife preserve in the shadow of Mt. Rainier). I just wanted to remind everyone, if you ever plan a trip to the Northwest, be sure to make it between mid August and mid October. The most reliable weather and the smallest crowds. I also want to be sure to wish Brother Mark a happy last week stateside. Even though there is no real difference between 3000 and 7000 miles, especially when your communication is cyber based, I feel like we are losing him all over again. Been great to have you around Mark, and thanks for the website.....Adios.....§

Hi: Now for news from west of the continental divide. First of all, Athena, I felt the same way as you did about the sliding rock when I saw it, but it turns out that there is one in Washington State as well, and Lord knows we have some good lawyers here. Next, I took Paul Pingree and a friend to the baseball game yesterday, then had another nice Barbecue with the westernmost Styloses, the Stylos/Pingrees. Happy to report that all here are doing well. Go, Thene, or Row, Thene, as the case may be. And have a great time in NC, Linda, Scott, Melissa and Joey. Keep those cards and letters coming...§

well i guess that bit of news was hard to follow. . .i do have this to say: that scott and linda and joey and melissa all arrived down here safely . . . i drove to brevard this morning and we all had fried chicken and corn for lunch and went to the cradle of forestry. The sliding rock was too full and crowded though so we didn't get to have that particular brand of fun ( i always say about the sliding rock, they would never allow this in massachusetts because of potential lawsuits . . .) now i am back at school finishing my homework so i can go to bed early because for those of you who might not have heard, yes, i have joined the clemson crew team . . . only land practices so far but they still make us get up awful early. That's the news from south of the mason dixon line . . .

It was a very proud and poignant moment. I miss her already; it is MUCH too quiet here. Melinda is interested to see how this only child thing works. Jessamyn's new address is P.O. Thanks a lot for all your thoughtful wishes. I might have been president of these United States If I had worked harder and practiced lying but even that would not have given me more gladness, happiness, sense of well being, or sense of pride that I feel in being part of this family. And as for my birthday I don't feel a day older than 72. But all kidding aside I have been most fortunate, not only in the family we raised but also in the family I was raised.. Even though there are memories better forgotten my original family had a good share of love and good wishes for all of us. So mitera kai patera I want you to know I am grateful and wish I had told you this a lot sooner. But I guess we were all busy finding an identity and a way to get to not being poor to show our gratefulness for what we had. As to the family we raised there are no regrets or at least none I can think of right now. I love you all and you are all very special in you own unique ways. So thanks.

Happy Birthday to Buddy from Scott and family! We're thinking of you and wish we could be there in person(s), but will have to wait until we come down there next weekend. It will be Scott, Linda, Joe and lissa making the trip. Jeff will be starting classes that week so he will stay behind. Stay cool, and we'll see you soon.

And a great birthday to you dad from the west coast. I told Ana this morning that it was your big day and she was excited. Of course, her next question was how many more days until MY birthday. She goes back to her mom tomorrow. We had a great summer visit, and seeing you guys in NC was definitely the highlight. Hopefully we will have more time to spend there next summer. You are loved by many, dad, and should be proud of the you and your bridal unit have done with your family. Take good care, and may your 74th year be the best one yet. §

I am hoping to do some good work this year and to decide soon if i want to stay here after this year or transfer , , , meantime i am putting my portfolio together. Well, hard to be inside when the weather has been so nice. It seems that summer in the Pacific Northwest happens in August and September. Ana and I are happily spending August in a small beach house in Gig Harbor. Out of respect to the view and to Ana, I didn't bring a computer and didn't have a phone hooked up (my mobile phone doesn't work there). In a way, it is like still being on vacation, if being a single working parent can ever be a vacation. We've done plenty of reading and walking on the beach. Ana has been swimming up a storm, although she still wears a life preserver when swimming in the sound. And for a few days, she can't go over her head, while her ears heal from last week's piercing. We trust that you all had a nice 60th birthday party for Dick Straley. Mark, when do you head back to France? Keep the post-it's coming!!!! Hope all is well.....§

Good thoughts and wishes and crossed fingers to Mona. We made it back to MA last night after a long ride from N.C., made easier thanks to Dad's help at the wheel. We also stopped at liberty park, and had time to do the statue thing. Even though we missed the first boat, Vanessa's good looks and a friendly ranger got us up to the crown. Just winding down before the return to France in a couple of weeks. Hope to make it to see Scott before they all leave. What else is new?

Phew! I'm most of the way through Paul's Birthday Weekend. Yesterday was a madhouse of running around, eating pizza and ice cream cake, ending with four 8 year olds watching scary movies and crashing on the living room floor. Today's activities include making Creepy Crawlers, playing video games and returning guests to their homes. Then David and Paul will head in to town on the ferry, walk over to the Kingdome and *not* watch Randy Johnson pitch against David Cone (sp?) and the Yankees. The game will be nationally televised - so if you're watching, keep an eye out for the two Pings! In the Betsy department, she cantered for the first time yesterday, and thought it was quite a thrill! Needless to say, I'm proud as can be of my little ones, and hope some of you will get the chance to come out and see for yourselves!

Vacation is coming to an end. Ana and I are at Gail Mosession's, with Gail and Teddy, and getting ready for tomorrow's drive to New York, and flight to Seattle. We spent the day with Timmy and Jillian in Marblehead. Ana showed off her new swimming and diving skills in their pool. The weather in Boston is perfect. We'll be posting our safe return confirmation soon. It was great to see everyone, now we can't wait until our next vacation. Lots of hellos from Gail and Ted.........§

TGIF. Supposed to be a nice weekend coming up around these parts in Western Mass. Joey is leaving for a 1 week canoe trip in Maine tomorrow at 5:30 AM. He's recovering from his whooping cough and sinusitis just about in time, but still whoops once in a while. Linda, Lissa and Joe will all take a week in Maine the following week. Jeff and I will hold down the fort and keep our noses to the grindstone. Jeff's doing well with his chemistry class and thinks he will take some more classes at Berkshire Community College in the fall. Linda is making a nice stone patio outside our back door. Come see it!

The count is up to 9. I know because Vanessa counts to set the table. Steve and Ana made it here last night. This morning the three youngest young'uns are off to camp. Mark is, well I'll let him tell that story, Melinda is asleep on the couch (as a teenager who spends all night on the computer should) and I am waiting for Dad to come back and make bacon and eggs. Lots of delicious blueberries. We await Athena and Jessamyn Saturday. Anyone else?

The current number at the cabin is 828-675-0752. So far we are five here: P and R plus Mark, Vanessa and Jerome. We expect Paula and Melinda by Sunday, latest. We're having perfect weather at the moment. Mark has been sawing and splitting firewood. Vanessa and Jerome go to a camp 3 hours a day in Burnsville, and keep things lively here the rest of the time. They're improving their English, we're improving our French. Miranda, welcome home and thanks for sending us a card. We're looking forward to a posting with lots of details about "what I did this summer". Keep this thing alive, you guys, now that we have it conveniently set up. Ramona, Mom, Yaya.

Today I drive down to pick up Miranda. I expect to be blinded by her tan: working on that was her singular mission. The weather is overcast, as it has been all week. I went to a High Tech Career fair yesterday, and got some encouraging leads, as well as a good sense of how in demand testers are these days. Even talked to Siemens, Dad, and wonder if they're still using MUMPS. Anyway, I do hope someone will post here, or at least send me the new phone # for the cabin: I'm missing you all, as ever.

Bravo! Thanks for the messages from the "on the road" crew. The next best thing to being there. It was fun to follow you along on the map. Even though my little map doesn't have Phillipe or Santorini that I could find. You'll have to show me when you're back. Speaking of soccer, here's some statistics from Time magazine: percentage of English men who would rather watch world cup soccer on TV than have sex with the woman of their dreams-95%; percentage of Americans who know that the world cup has something to do with soccer-50%. Anyways, can't wait to see those travel photos. Have a happy and safe trip home everybody. Love, Scott.

yes we are on paros yes there are palm trees yes we miss you all. We have eaten a great deal of souvlaki and spaghetti boleneze (dad) tzaziki and greek salads (mark and athena) luckily mark and athena have similar tastes as do (as dad pointed out) buddy and melinda. I have had some of the best fish i've ever had and so very fresh. Not to mention octopus. The water is wonderful for swimming, the surrounding bodies are all tan and young and beautiful everyone speaks english at least on this island and they all have cell phones that go off at any given moment and you don't know what language they will start speaking into it. We saw the ruins and the wall frescoes in there (santorini) i bought the beautiful book for any one who's interested . . . i went with dad and we had both really liked them. I like going around with dad because we are treated like long lost relatives no matter where we go. I truly wish you ALL could have come on this trip.... Sounds like there will be a gathering of the clan here in october for giannis' wedding for anyone who wants to catch up . . . i do highly recommend it. Fillipei is especially beautiful for those who like mountains and the thessoloniki relatives are worth the trip right there (brush up on your greek though) and as for the islands well they are just little tropical paradises. Come on down! Meantime i will see many of you in massachusetts or in north carolina Much much love from your wandering sister athena p.s. eight roles of film and counting . . .

Hi All! Wow, Athena, you make it sound very appealing. Ana and I are in Portland celebrating the tenth annual fourth of the seventh with the Neidigs (John, Barbara, Harper and Cecille). Seems like all of their friends started their families in their forties, so we somehow skip a generation. And it doesn't even seem to impact the generation gap. Needless to say, Ana and I fit right in. We are still planning to come to North Carolina late in July. We are shooting for July 23rd or so until August 3rd or so. We are flying standby (thanks again, Mark F.) so our schedule will be a bit unpredictable. We still haven't decided whether to rent a car. Any suggestions? Here's to a happy, healthy and safe Independence Day!!! §

Say, why do we call this a guestbook? It has become a family bulletin board. While at the Appalachian State University last week I passed by the computer room and saw a staff member from the dulcimer workshop there, so I went in and asked to borrow the internet for a momentito and so I was able to get news from both the travelers and the stay-at-homers. I am now back in Brevard. All is well here. I hope everybody finds a way to celebrate the Fourth of the Seventh. Keep posting, Paul, Athena, Melinda and Mark and we'll keep eagerly reading. hey! we're in santorini now, which we all agree is one of the best places yet . .. . it is just a little cooler (still hot though -- quote from dad "there's no need for this kind of heat " but it is clean and white and the ocean is a deep electric blue. We found this internet cafe but the system seems slow and a little funky, i hope this works . . . i can't access my hotmail (nor can any of the other frustrated americans) but at least we have the home sweet homepage. We continue to eat well, nap alot, get along good. The islands seem even more relaxed than the mainland. We found peanut butter for melinda and dad, and a beautiful expensive hotel for mark to drool over (we're staying in a cheap clean and homey one) there are donkeys and tele-trams and boats and good fruit and cheap pistachios. We are rotating the same three novels between us, and getting to know eachother much better. Everything is as blue and white as the greek flag. Tons of tanned beefcake and cheesecake. And a restaurant called Mamas (the sign says: mama loves you babies) where dad got a big american breakfast. The sky is a dome of blue, the sun is strong and hot, there are palm trees enough to make us feel like we are really on vacation and americans enough to make us feel not too far from home. The streets are shiny black cobble, the pace is slow and loud. Scooters every where. Very interesting reenforced concrete construction (and lots of half finished buildings) lots of older men in cafes with nothing seemingly to do but drink greek coffee, twirl their worry beads and give us directions. Well that was more in athens. Here is a much younger and more industrious crowd. We are all struck by how clean it is here compared to athens. And how much easier to breathe. We are happy to be in a hotel for more than one night. We are thinking of four days here and two on paros before we head back to athens wednesday night to head home thursday morning. We will fly right through the full moon (in cancer) and be home six something thursday night after dropping melinda at a london hotel. It is nice to sleep late instead of charging off to the next site. I am headed for the beach myself and maybe a cool drink. It is nice to be on a contained island where none of us can get too lost. Wishin you all were here to share in the hot fun (and decision making) we love you all even though it is hard to access the email to tell you personally. Looking forward to seeing you in our next rendez-vousies. Mark, i got your brief message and will try to answer if this system lets me. Love from athena

I just got an email from athena who says that, alas, they are temporarily unable to access our web page. I'm sure they (especially Melinda) will keep trying. She wanted to tell all of us virtual travelers that they are alive and well, and on their way to Santorini. I talked to Melinda and Dad today and can attest to their good health. I hope they are taking lots of pictures and committing everything to memory for our enjoyment. Stay cool!

okay it's friday now and mark and melinda have arrived safely. I have taken on the role of little napolean junior and marched them into a stupor today. We saw the parthenon and ate in a delicious taverna that mark picked out of the guidebook. Both travelers doing well inspite of lack of sleep. Tonight we are going to the plaka for dinner and then tomorrow we are renting a car to go to delphi and then the peloponnese. A big airconditioned car. Dad and i had a little one. But we're travelling in style now. Affordability in numbers. Weather here bright and hot. Haven't seen any rain yet in our ten plus days. We may not be near an internet cafe till we get back from our car trip in a week, so don't worry if you don't hear from us. Who wants what souvenir? Mark is already a haggling expert. Greek or no greek. Much love to everyone, we truly wish you all were here.

To the traveling Styloses, and the stay-at-home ones, and the rest of the world: I'm leaving Brevard for the cabin tomorrow for one night to catch Becky and David while they are around, then on up to West Jefferson to spend Sat.night with a friend of Laurie's and then on Sunday to Boone for the dulcimer week until Friday. The email and internet has become very important to me of late, especially since not much of interest comes through the postal system. I have arranged for telephone hook-up for the cabin starting July 7th. The best we can do with internet hook-up is to continue using Citcom and paying 10cents a minute while we're hooked up. Hopefully we'll have too many other things to do so we can keep online time to a minimum. Paul and Athena, keep sending travel notes. It's a great way to keep us all informed. We're all there with the 4 of you in spirit. Love, RLS

Thanks for the update, Dad. It's always a pleasure to see your postings, although it feels kind of like cheating. Like we are not supposed to know how it went until you get back or something. Tim has been with me all week. That has been a pleasure. He and Jillian are headed back east for the summer on saturday. I am trying to arrange for them to make a short trip to NC in late July. We'll keep you posted, pun intended. §

We just got back to Athens and what can I say. We could not have been treated better or been happier or luckier. First of all we found the styloses in Thessaloniki without even having the proper address and if you think that is not a trip imagine stopping to ask someone where a particular suburb is and finding you are just two blocks from where you want to be. I cannot tell you how cordial the folks were and particularly how happy and glad they were to meet Athena. We proceeded to phillipe where Thene and I had the third floor suite. Christos seemed quite strong inspite of his near ninety years and Little napolean takes good care of him but tolerates no nonsense. We have taken many pictures and will have more to say when we get home. We have a room for Melinda and Mark and we even have a hotel where we can park a car so we will have little problem meeting them. Ramona the hotel is next to the Omonia where we have stayed but now is being raised. We also overlook the Music store where you bought the bazookie. Good reading your messages and Mona Do have a very good year.

OK, OK here it is: this guy at work was giving away tickets he wasn't using for this home stand. So, me and Betsy are sitting there (right behind 1st base), and I hear this "Betsy, Betsy!", and not 6 rows back were Steve and Tim! Wild! They had just bought the tickets off a guy out front at the last minute. Couldn't have planned it that way. They moved over to some empty seats next to us, and we had a nice visit, and a great time watching the game together.

Hey, Tim! It's good to see a new face (?) and all that clip art stuff!. I want to learn to do that. To everybody else: I'm back on line and my e-mail is open for business, thanks to Mark and a spare computer. I will be out of town, however from Friday June 26 until the Fourth of July. I will be fraternizing with a big bunch of other dulcimer nuts in Boone, NC. I will check in on my return, so send mail anyway. Ramona

I'll keep doing that, Athena and Paul, so keep posting. All is well on Wilson Drive and Paul, your rose bush by the drive way has a very large and beautiful rose on it. Give my greetings to the in-laws I have never met. Athena, try ear-plugs. Keep cool if you can. Love, RLS

Wow! I leave this site for two days, and look what happens! Ana and I just returned from the Indian resort Kah-Nee-Tah, in Central Oregon. We went to celebrate Patsy's seventieth. A grand time was had by all 35 or so of us. Pam and kids from Virginia, and Beverlee and family from L.A. were about the most traveled travelers. Great turnout, great weather and great times. I am glad I got back to barely squeeze in a happy father's day to my father, and all the family fathers! Mark and Melinda, I am jealous of missing the father-daughter trip to the old country. I am proud to be part of such a great family, and our thoughts and hearts will be travelling with you all!!! See you all in North Carolina next month. Take care and Happy Trails....

P.S. To all of you that have to read this semi-personal communication, please feel free to advise on where to go in Greece, especially re the islands. The best suggestion wins a trip to lovely Bayonne, NJ, gateway to Elizabeth.

Greetings to all from the adbode of the Stylos-Allans. This communication is especially intended for the party of Buddy and Athena. Your plans sound great. Do you have a read on the ease of taking the ferries. Melinda got a tip to go to Santorini of all islands, the same place i was told to go. How hard would it be? Could we go straight on from there to Crete? Is renting a car on Crete easy? Questions, questions, questions. I guess going to Delphi first makes sense. Hope the fun continues, Mark (and Melinda, in her absence--she is en route to seeing X-Files, the movie).

hey we're here in thessoloniki like the man says. We found an internet cafe, they seem to be worldwide now like they say . . . sidestepping the bugs is another matter . . . we know we're in europe because of the cigarettes and also the world cup is on the big screen. Thessoloniki is beautiful, new city and old, and our cousins are most hospitable (and beautiful!) Hope everyone can make it here some time or another. Highly recommend it. Especially for the fish lovers. Tomorrow we head to phillippe. We will check in again when we pass the next internet cafe. Haven't quite figured out how to access our email, but i have an account set up on hotmail which i think should work. Otherwise post messages in this hollow tree, as mom says. Mark and melinda: bring clothes for hot weather and good walking shoes. We thought we would have a hotel room in athens for the night (morning) you arrive and the next night, you might want to sleep some that day like we did, and then go on to delphi the next day. We found a swell hotel in delphi. Hope all is well stateside, happy father's day to the fathers amoung us! Much love from athena

we are in Thessolinika and are having fun with the system. It needs some work but is amusing since many of the options are listed in Greek. I know some Greek but the technical terms are foreign to me. will let you know of our progress later. WE have been met by the family of Apostolos Stylos and heve been treated very graciously. Great people !! Unfortunately the old man has some form of alsheimer desease. However I find him somewhat communicative and is kept by very loving children and an exceptional wife, Wifes name is Andromachi and children Panagiota (giota) and John (gianis). We will get them listed and I would like to include photos when we return to the U.S. I turn it over to goita. Hey, Scott! Ping says he accepts the challenge! The weather here is truly spectacular, befitting the occaision. Too bad the days are getting shorter, though. To Pateda-moo (phonetic spelling). I love you, more than a little. Or was it more than a lot? Anyway, we're thinking of you, and also wishing we could be with you. Hey Dad: HAPPY FATHER'S DAY! I hope that you are having a truly wonderful day with one of your (many) truly wonderful children. I also hope you are making great memories, and collecting stories to tell when you return. I am so glad you got to make this trip, though I already regret that I didn't come along. I will have to live it through your eyes. Mark and Melinda are getting excited about joining you this week, and are anxiously shopping for tropical clothing. Any words of advice? I love you Dad. Hope the weather is good and the people are good to you back in the father-land. And happy fathers day to everyone everywhere, especially to Ping who gets a double or triple celebration today. Wow! News from Athens. Are you two travelers able to check your email? Or just the website? Sounds like things haven't changed in Athens, where you need only two things to drive, a horn and an accelerator. Ana and I have finalized our summer plans. We will be spending about 10 days in NC at the end of July (after the 17th). We are not exactly sure when, because we will be flying standby (Thanks Mark). We will then return to Seattle and rent a small beach cottage for the month of August. I will work all summer while Ana plays with her friends, who happen to be my bosses' kids. She will be with me until the 28th of August. Well, I hope all is well with all.

Eating good, living cheap, seeping good (dad) not so good (athena). Acropolis is open though still scaffolded, athena is going to archeological museum today with sketchbook in hand. Still on our first roll of film. Everyone is friendly especially to dad who starts out speaking english then switches to greek on them . . . there are a million taxis all going really fast. We have figured out the bus and trolley system pretty well. Miss you all every single one. Come on over!

Well, this is enough to warm the cockle's of any one's heart! Thank you all so much! The weather is actually fine today, which is unusual for mid June in Puget Sound country. I found flowers waiting on my desk when I came in, and am looking forward to dinner at home with the whole family! And I'm sending out my best birthday vibes to Steve -- make sure you call me if I can't track you down before you head out for the weekend. Thanks again! Gee, has it really been two months since the last message I posted? I do enjoy reading the "guestbook" several times a week, so I guess I should send messages a little more often. Melissa seems to have made a full recovery from her pneumonia, although the cough lingered for quite a while. As many of you know, Jeff got his license, although it was touch and go during his road test. Those troopers can be pretty tough. Jeff is out with the car right now looking for excitement in the big city (Amherst). Good thing I know he has as much money in the bank as my car is worth in case he cracks it up. Joe and I are still plugging away at the log cabin in the back yard. It's about 4 feet high now. When we get to 6 feet we'll start the roof. Linda keeps on weaving. The craft show on Long Island last weekend was a real adventure, but the Long Islanders didn't seem to appreciate her stuff as much as expected. Pam is still living and working in Marblehead, and we don't get to see her as much as we would like. I have another year to go at Berkshire Medical Center and haven't lined up anything for after that yet. Sorry we missed Jess's grad. party, but glad the kids could make it. To those people who are heading for Greece; bon voyage, and take good notes for when we finally make it there. Love to all.

Hmm. Another inconclusive day at the doctors....as it turns out, I'm not allergic to *anything*, at least by way of airborn allergens. But luckily (kind of), I was having a doozy of a flair-up of my ear pain, so the Dr was able to conclude.....Something's Going On! She's got it narrowed down to Vaso-motor rhinitis (Ithink it was), or Chronic Sinitus, which would require a more in depth Cat Scan. Oy! On to new drugs, and we'll see what happens. Sheesh. I'm not boring you, am I?!?!

I'm down to my last few weeks here in CT, before I go get the kids and bring them here for a six week vacation this summer. Nothing eventful, just counting the days. We will probably go to NC for a month, and then do some visiting in the MA area, but nothing is ever sure. Whilst all of you easterners were celebrating for Jess and Paul and Ramona, we westerners (Patsy, Ken, Steve, Ana, David, Mona, Miranda, Betsy and Paul) were celebrating Patsy's 70th. Had a nice barbecue, a la David (Mister Master of Meat). Wish we could have merged the celebrations. As far as the summer plans, it is still unclear when Ana and I will be coming to North Carolina. Starting to look like the third week in July, and only for about 10 days. We will probably rent a small cabin on the water in Gig Harbor for the month of August. We'll keep ya posted.

Hey!! Am I talking to myself here?? Well, so what if I am? Glad the weekend's here. Everyone but me has to go to the dentist to have their teeth on today. I'm set to see an allergy specialist in June to figure out what the *&^& is going on. The kids can't wait for summer vacation, though I have no idea how the child-care situation is going to work out. I actually have some vacation time coming -- Woooo Hoooo! My friend Sam and I went to see Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison and Bob Dylan play at the Gorge in George, Washington 2 weeks ago, and I tell you -- I'm still buzzed!! They - especially Van and Joni - were in-credibly great. Wish you could have been there. Say, is anyone planning a trip out West this summer? Well, I guess I'll sign off. A week is too long for no new messages so here's mine. We drove to Kentucky and Ohio over the week-end and saw old friends and old relatives. I even talked to someone who was one of my best friends in first through seventh grade, and whom I hadn't seen or heard from since! She told me her mother had lived (or was it got married) in the cabin when it was in Kentucky and she and her husband want to come down and visit us in Celo. I found her name in the geneaology book, as having married one of our distant cousins. I had a call from a woman in Florida who is desperate to buy a genealogy book. I told her I wasn't selling them, but might part with one if I determined that it's not needed for my own family. So any of you descendants of Raymond Layne who didn't get a geneaology and want one, speak up now. John Ramsay did unearth a few we didn't know we had and I think Dad would want to cooperate with this woman with roots in Bearwallow who wants some of the information that he got from other cooperative people. I was surprised to see that the last (but not necessarily the best) edition was finished in 1982, when Dad was 82 years old. I guess we need to be toleant of so many typos, since he used his little old portable typewriter, not a computer. Enjoy the spring, one and all. RLS

Brevard, North Carolina is blanketed in azaleas and dogwood blossoms. Too late for you to catch it this year, but start thinking about a visit for this time next year. All are welcome and invited. To all of you who don't have the time or the inclination to send me email, no reason we can't keep doing it in public, like this. RLS

Well, it is official, and it is final. Jess will be going to Marlboro College! We are all (including Jessamyn) surprised by her sudden change of heart and mind, and support her all the way. High School graduation is at 5:30 at the Acton Boxborough High School on June 5. We would like to invite you all to a graduation bash on Saturday June 6 at our house, 1:00 in the afternoon. Let's celebrate!

Hi all. It's been a while since a member of the Bill Stylos contigent has posted, so here goes! Vinnie and I are enjoying springtime in New York City (so are the multitude of friends and family who have realized that we aren't going to be here much longer!) We've had a lot of fun exploring all the different neighborhoods. SoHo seems to be our favorite. I hosted a "girls weekend" a few weeks ago. Ginny, Lisa and Barbara came to the big city for some fun and frolicking. It was a great time. We start our house-hunt in Colorado in a couple of weeks and hope to be moved out there by the end of June. What a change of pace! We're looking forward to unpacking and settling in. It's been almost a year since we've had "our own place". Just as Jessamyn is accepting tuition donations - well we're accepting down-payment donations so keep that in mind! That's all for now. Hope everyone has a wonderful summer! Sounds like the cabin will be put to good use! Andi

Hey, Y'all! Mark - how'd you get those line breaks in your last post? Let's see if that does the trick. I'm doing a course of antibiotics to try and get rid of this sinus infection that's been lurking for a couple of years. Hoping to breathe more easily soon. Other than that - I barely have time to think, let alone keep up with everyone - so do me a favor, and post your status here! Best of luck to you, Dad. And another wooo hooo! for Jess!!

I'm back at my summer job, here in Groton, CT. Not sure for how long this time, anywhere from a couple of months to indefinitely. It was easy to settle in, though some changes have taken place, and the crew is considerably smaller. GE sold out, and it is now owned by venture capitalists out of Boston. Missing the Old Man here, no one can argue a point with me as well as he. Speaking of Paul, he is due for eye surgery in a week or so. I hope the shock of seeing us all at 20/20 does not turn out too much for him! You know we are all pulling for you, Dad.

I've been checking the statistics on this Web Site, and here are some of them. I think they are for the last month. Concentric (Paula and ???) is still at number one, with 637 hits. Steve (att and nwlink) are a close second with 512. Microsoft is even beating Sun here - 194 to 94 (come on Andrea, we are all counting on you!). Bill (meganet) is at 73. There are 146 hits from France, 58 from the UK, 24 from Canada, 16 from Germany, 12 from Belgium, and even 2 from the Netherlands. Alright all you foreigners, don't be bashfull and leave us a note.

For those of you who had trouble with your calendars last week, the real Easter was celebrated yesterday in Fairhaven, with the hostess of the mostess Ginny. In addition to Bill and Ginny, we were joined by Thea and her two boys, Robert and Greg, Auntie Cathy, David Straley brought his wife Pat, son Doug and Dougs friend Jen (whom Robert was on the verge of proposing to). The charming in-laws from Baltimore, Ned and Barbara also were in town. All went well under the supervision of our patriarch Petros.

And what about those Sox! Sure made Seattle and the rest of them look pretty tame. I guess Seattle needs more than a new ballpark! (Get on it, will you, Steve?)

That is all the news from here. What about you?

For all those waiting for news....HELLO. We are spending this weekend visiting Hampshire, Marlboro and Bennington College so that Jessamyn can make her final choice. We will accept any and all finacial donations. She has 20 days left of high school, will we all make it? Mark A. starts a REAL job June 1st at Boston Medical Center, he will miss the world of the self employed. Melinda (and Mark) are flying to Greece June 25, meeting Athena and Dad there. Melinda is now an orange belt in Karate, and learning alot in her art class. We miss Mark S, though he seems happy at his new job. Don't know WHO is keeping him in milk. Me, I am tired. VERY MUCH looking forward to a relaxed time at the cabin. Love to you all.

Happy Easter everybody! It was a nice day today for an easter egg hunt, and that's what we did. Hid 35 eggs and found 34 (that's better than most years). Jeff's chocolate bunny melted in the sun. That's what happens when you sleep until afternoon. (You're all saying "we know who he gets that from!) Everybody here is doing well. We are still not sure when we are going to make it to NC, probably early May of late August, because of my work schedule. Also dont know for sure how we are going to get there. We're worried about driving in a car with 150K miles on it. Anybody have any good ideas? Train? Bus? We'll see. Everybody wish Jeff luck on his SAT's next month. Also come by and see the log cabin Joey is building.

Ana and I will probably be in NC for two weeks in July. Good work, everyone, on getting the energy flowing….Love to all

way to get the ball rolling, steve! maybe we could make a graph of who is going to be at the cabin when. I am hoping to be there midjuly-to-early august. I have to move (just upstairs) august first so i want to be handy for that. School is going quite well. We had a really big project due monday, and it went well. I am feeling happy about the work and what i amn learning. I'll be here another year at least, then i may continue on here or transfer . . . any suggestions? My visit home (to answer steve's question) was brief but revitalising. I had a fun and food-filled late birthday celebration with paula, helped co-host ceejays art opening (two different tuxedoes on two different days) and worked on my project (travelling with a model was a trick!). Got snowed in in hartford for a few hours and came back to eighty degree weather. Spring is alive here (i hear it's happening everywhere thank heavens) and i think it's going to be a good summer. What are we doing for mom's seventieth birthday this fall? Guess we better get started on those fruitcakes . . . love to all, and to all a camelia blossom . . .

Ana and I are planning to go to North Carolina this summer for 2 to 3 weeks. At this point, it looks like it will be early july or late august. We'll post something as soon as we know. Why don't we all do that to remember what each other said. Kind of our own online tour sevice. And while we are at it, let's all send our north carolina pictures and make a north carolina section? Also, I am tentantively planning to take Timmy and Jillian to Mona's on the weekend of April 25th, I might try to find a way to take them to north carolina this summer. Leigh's mom lives within 100 miles of the cabin.

Well, how nice that you are all coming alive and joining the living. I think it must be spring fever, the end of a long cold winter. Too long. Too cold. I can't wait for this week's update, Steve. I am intrigued. And Mona, how is that job of yours? Is Miranda in college yet? Mom, I would like to see this elementary school; when are we going? News from here: Paris was fabulous and I have the photos to prove it. Very romantic. What a way to start the spring season! The flight was long, but not too bad. Dad had been here for a while and as usual we have thoroughly enjoyed his company. Mark S is back from France and in the middle of occupational negotiations, but I will let him write about that. Melinda is taking Karate, and after about 6 weeks has already passed yellow belt. Also, she is taking a drawing class at the DeCordova Museun. She is on the honor roll two terms in a row! Jessamyn (who also has two terms on the honor roll) has been accepted to Hampshire College and is thrilled. So far it is her first choice. Unfortunately she was not offered the academic scholarship there that both Bennington and Marlboro offered her. She will have to make a decision by May 1. That's about it. Who plans a North Carolina trip this summer, and when are you thinking of going? So far it looks like we will be heading South the middle of July. Let's coordinate. Now let's hear from the rest of you!

I suppose this is as good a way as any to communicate with a large family, and save stamps at the same time. The latest from me, down here in the tar-heel state is that I am back from a trip to Valley Station, KY where I had gone because Pat was there visiting her sister, Nezi. Though the 4 days I was there had its serious aspect (trips to hospitals and labs in connection with Pat's medical consultations) we had a great visit at the Anderson's hospitable home. Nezi and Doug joined us in dominoes and working jig-saw puzzles in the evening and in the daytime we did our usual: eating White Castle hamburgers, visiting thrift stores and finding plenty to giggle about. One day we dicided to go get a look at the Layne Elementary School, which was named for my mom and dad and opened some 20 or 30 years ago. We had just meant to pop in and get a quick look, but when the principal found out who we were, were given royal treatment! We were introduced to classroom and staff and showed every part of the school. We were both very favorable impressed by the looks and general atmosphere of the school. And the big picture of my folks is still in the front hall. It was a funny feeling, seeing Layne all over everything. Does this guestbook take messages of this length? We'll see. Thank you Steve! David and I actually went OUT last night! Unfortunately, he has to work today (on the new Mariner's stadium - good, uh?), so he couldn't really relax and enjoy a late night out. Paul's Science Fair project won for his grade, and he got to go to the District Fair. Betsy finished up her basketball season with another first place! Camelias are blooming in the back yard, and looking to settle in to a weekend of housework and catching up - AGAIN! Now someone else's turn! I told Buddy I would say HI!! to him here, and everyone would know if he didn't asnwer me! P.S. - a live report - Steve's looking and doing great!

Okay, Okay... I'm sick of checking this site only to find no new news, or even old news for that matter. I know I have been among the most guilty of reading, but not posting, so here's what's new with me: nothing. Well, not nothing, exactly, but nothing I can talk about until next week. I promise an update then. And here are some questions for all of you other reader/non posters. Mark - how was France? Dad - How was Boston? Athena - how is school, and how was Boston? Mike Layne - do you still check this site? Paula - How was Paris? And how is it that my entire family was travelling on Friday the 13th? Jess - any school news? Melinda - why has our most cyber savvy youngster never posted here. My apologies to Jeff, but you are not a youngster anymore (were you ever?) Scott - any new branches on the family tree? Or forest? Mona and Andrea - you are both so quiet that you must have settled the Microsoft-Sun war. Bill - is little Steve coming to town anytime soon? And how are all those special grandkids? Okay, there is some food for thought. If I don't have anything new to read here soon, I am going to start flooding all of your email boxes until I frustrate you all into it. Hope you are all well, I love you all!!!
